<snip> My question is, what do we call our WAR-type stories where we're
writing about ourselves in all our silly, factional glory, running around
intermingling with the FK characters in their world or blatantly dragging
them into ours? Are they actually a form of Mary-Sue, or do they fall into
a category all by themselves? <snip>

I seem to be a minority, but I always thought of the War stories I did as
Mary Sue. (Though Nunkies Anonymous always had the saying, "It's
not Mary Sue if you write it about someone else.") I guess my reasoning
was from the self-indulgence factor: I've written others and myself doing
fantastically clever, silly, sometimes illegal, gullible, idiotic things, and
getting away with it. I suppose I could call it roleplaying, but I can't help
but think several hundred pages about my personal journey lliving a
llama llie is kind of a world-usurping thing. Our fictional selves become
forefront in a War, and the FK characters have the supporting roles.

Whenever I've tried to explain a fan fiction War to someone from outside
the FK fandom, who can't relate to the character or the factions, their
understanding typically boils down to War as a huge round robin where
the authors portray themselves and friends in the series setting. More than
once, it's spurred a reaction of, "So War's like a giant Mary Sue field
trip?"

What's neat about War is that it works as a special case of Mary Sue.
It's not just one person, putting themselves or their special character in
the center of this great universe; it's dozens, up to hundreds of people. The
community spirit aspect of it drains the sting of the Mary Sue author, lost
in their private fantasy world. We're all there, we're all crazy-wonderful,
we're all *sharing* the fun with whomever wants to join in. (Provided they
submitted their permission slip to the WM, of course. <g>)

I think we really should try and give this type of
roleplaying/Mary Sue field trip a name....LOL we have
too much fun with it to keep this sort of
entertainment confined to ourselves :oD

Any suggestions??? Sue-Ellen-Bobs perhaps hahaha

There is a name for it---it's "FK War." <g>

This really is its own beast. If other fandoms want to have their own wars,
well, ours are online and available for reading for their reference!

Subject: Mary Sue vs. War personas : my take

It seems to me that there's a crucial distinction between a Mary Sue and an FK
wartime persona. Mary Sues are nearly always deadly serious about themselves
and their fictional perfect relationships with their favorite characters from
their show. Our personas are mainly humorous and so are the situations we get
into. As for what we do with and to the FK characters --

Using myself as an example, I turn into an exuberantly crazy drunk. Sometimes I
get hit on the head and develop delusions. I once thought I was a Ratpacker and
spent the whole war that way. Then there was the time I thought I was a cat,
except when I'd been drinking and thought I was a drunk cat who thought I was
human. I have stolen Janette's Ferrari and gone joyriding with Alma. I have ended
up chasing LaCroix with a snapping, undead boiled lobster, a pot of garlic
butter, and a pack of spirit wolves.
