Subject: The Montessori School Versus the House Near the Corner

Howdy,

Regarding the confusion about which house was Schanke's...

During my VERY early days of doing tours in 1994 (and the only other people
leading tours whom I knew about at the time were Don Bassingthwaite, Lynne
Ackerman, and I used to think Steve Fellowes but I seem to recall he
corrected me on that a few years ago and said he wasn't - My apologies to
Steve if I got it wrong again!), I had been using a very old list which was
compiled by the now-defunct FK Canada fan club, which did in fact list the
Montessori school as the site of Schanke household. I'd had it in my head
that the club had "special access", so I didn't question anything on the
list.

Not having had the foresight to take pictures off the TV (and by the way I
love Kristin Harris's site, thank you Kristen for getting me hooked on it!),
I took it for granted as correct until someone corrected me at some point in
1995. Since then, I have been using more recent lists compiled either from
me and/or others in the local fan community (usually Lynne) happening to
walk or drive by and recognise a site and/or by happening upon a filming.

In any case we're only human, so I or anyone else is not immune from making
mistakes. I fully accept the possibility that the sites on my tours are not
110% accurate and I think anyone who claims "their" lists are more
completely perfect is likely mistaken. The Toronto fan community turned
into "factional infighting" around 1995 and 1996 because, among other
things, two people were convinced that their lists were more accurate than
the other's. Consequently, I try to stay away from discussions of whose
lists are more accurate than anyone else's. However, anyone who has ever
suggested to me that I was mistaken has always been greeted with the kind of
friendly apology that all positive criticism deserves.

Cheers,
W.

When I saw this at the Found Magazine website, my first thought was that Nat
(or Grace!) must've had a hole in her pocket.

I'm in the middle of home improvement works. As we
finished painting a wall in our dining room I was
struck by how familiar the colour was.

Then it came to me: It was the wall colour of Nat's
apartment in the first season.

Somehow, the colour code "Warm Brick" really means
Screaming Orange.

Let's hope when I paint on "Turquoise Ocean" it won't
translate into Morgue Tile or Nick's Caddy green. :)

Having never actually participated in a War (I always
seem to miss them) but read them, I would say that
they are not Mary Sue's at all. There is a
self-awareness in War's that you are interacting with
the characters.

Myself, I can't stand them and cringe and stop reading
half-way thru most stories with her or him in them.
Even in role playing, I cannot stand characters based
on a person who fictionalizes themselves and everyone
loves them.

There is a fanfiction writer I know and read sometimes
who does this with her original characters in FK and
it drives me batty.

Inserting yourself may be fine, but don't have Nick
fall in love with you. Or become the newest supercop
in Toronto or the long lost child of LaCroix. Don't
all of a sudden have powers that the established
characters don't. Or become the instant best friend
of your favorite character. Or be beautiful and tall
and have a name like Tiger or Blazon or something.

Yes, universes are difficult to come up with. I spent
over 2 decades defining mine in my original stories
and am still changing things around. A lot like Paol
Anderson, I have very complicated worlds and
histories.

I know I am going on a rant about this, but it truly
bugs me. I equate it with 14 year old fangirrls who
write stories in their spirals in algebra class.

There is a great Mary Sue parody story written for the
Vampire Chronicles that unfortunatly, I cannot link to
so I don't get anyone sued, but if you email me off
list, I will give you the story and you can read for
yourself the perfect Mary Sue story.

Or just look up one of the links mentioned. I'm sure
you will regonise the characters immediately. Oh, and
professional writers are also guilty of this. Ever
watch a TV show and see the new character do a better
job than the old characters ever did? Mary Sue
takeoff. And even established characters can be
MarySue prototypes. Claire Huxtable on The Cosby Show
is a Mary Sue if ever there was one.

In fact, it goes back eons before the term was even
invented. Like I say, if you see one you will know
one.

Sorry so long but I get carried away with this
subject.

I was greatly surprised at the response to this earlier post. I honestly
thought the desire for more fan fiction had dwindled to a small few, but not
according to the many emails I recently received. I did listen to the
readers, and Second Chance will remain on my site. Also, as fan fiction
authors have mentioned many times, feedback is the greatest reward. The
recent emails fired me up to write more, and I'm happy to announce Second
Chance's Chapter Five is written and with my beta reader. I hope to post
the chapter sometime within the next week.

Again, thank you for the continued encouragement and support. You guys are
the best!

HUGS

anyone is interested in reading more of this story. If not, I plan on pulling
the series from my web site.

I found that there are many, many Livejournal communities about Mary
Sues in fan fic.
Since there are a lot of FK fans active on LJ (roleplaying and stuff):

Is there a special LJ community dealing with FK Mary Sues?
