I just noticed in my almanac that Monday (July 18) is the anniversary
of the start of the fire that burned Rome for six days in 64 AD.
According to legend, while Nero fiddled.

I seem to recall Uncle mentioning once that he taught Nero to play.
Or was that just in FanFic?

No, that's cannon. He said "I taught Nero the tune and together we
watched Rome burn". It's from Dark Knight.

The only thing that is misleading in this is that
LaCroix was brought across in 79 AD, when Vesuvius
erupted, so he HAD to have been mortal when this
happened.

It is never said that he wasn't mortal. Of course that was during the
General's "lifetime". He could easily have been an advisor to the
emperor, who then maybe lavishly rewarded him with a house in Pompeii ;-)
TPTB have goofed up a lot, but this is entirely possible.

I remembered one thing though that the PTB actually did mess up in AMPH:

Lucius friend toasts to him with the words: welcome to our eternal city,
general - welcome to Pompeii.

Probably meant as a sarcastic comment on the fate of Pompeii but a Roman
would only ever have refered to Rome itself as the eternal city.
