Subject: Generating enthusiasm for FK

OK, does everyone know that there is another
Highlander film coming out?

What, you say, has this got to do with FK?

Well, the point is that the HL franchise is still
pretty strong, and obviously has a lot more of a brand
name than FK.

There has been some recent discussion about FK dying
out, the fan fiction isn't posted as often. I think it
is amazing, in some respects, that we have as active a
community as we do, TEN YEARS after the show was
canceled. I'm a member of the HL "official" fan
fiction lists, and they are QUIET. I mean, a post
every several MONTHS if even that.

So, what does that say? To me, the fact that the
"official" HL franchise is still producing means that
writers are not as driven to keep the genre alive. We,
on the other hand, are the ONLY thing that is keeping
FK going in some respects. With FK being listed in TV
Guide last year, we could definitely capitalize on
that.

I know Deb Hymon said she got a lot of interest from
her discussion on Jewel's show. I think, as a
community, we have a lot more power. I know that
enthusiasm has probably waned for some folks since it
has been so long, but am I the only one who thinks
that with some of the recent genre films that have
come out that we might be able to capitalize on the
younger generation's interest in vampires, the
"gothic" and alternative music scene, etc. ?

Let's see: Van Helsing, Underworld, Blade Trinity,
Queen of the Damned. These are just the big name films
that come to mind. The SciFi channel has done at least
three or four vampire feature movies in the last
couple of years.

So, anyone else willing to generate some ideas for
contacting Sony? I was thinking a two hour TV movie,
but hey, if we can present them with a compelling
script idea, maybe we can get a movie done. I know
I've got connections in the film industry in Seattle
and a couple in LA. I'm sure anyone living in Toronto
or Vancouver or LA also has their connections as well.

One caveat: we all love Ger, Nigel, Catherine and Deb,
but I'm interested in the FK CONCEPT, and it is pretty
certain that any new inception of the Forever Knight
legacy will have new actors. That being said, am I
just spinning my wheels?

Does anyone else want to think about this with me?

I'm all for enthusiasm, but this is NOT how to get it done. They most even
look at an unsoliticed script, and probably not one submitted through an agent.
You don't start with a script in the film or tv business in 99% of the times.

You start with a "big name" wanting to do the film. A production company
goes to work (or one is formed). Talks start with the actors they want. Rights
would have to be secured. All that legal stuff.

Even if by some strange miracle they read a script, the vast majority of ideas
and scripts "optioned" (the rights bought) to make a movie never get beyond
the "option" stage of the process. Submitting an idea or a script would do
absolutely nothing. Sorry, but that is the way it works.

(I know people in the film industry and have taken several classes in script
writing, as well as having minor "roles" in several projects that never made
it to film. By roles, I don't mean acting, but rather as a writer and idea
person)

Highlander ALWAYS had a lot of marketing because merchandise was produced and
marketed. I think the fan base may be a little bigger, too, although I'm not
for sure.

What can we do? Introduce friends to FK. Buy the DVDs. Write asking when
Season 3 will be produced. Buy advertisements (which Kickstart the Knight does
from time to time). Spread the word about forkni-l on the Internet. Write
various networks asking for the reruns.

Until it is proven there is a market for an FK return in any form, you have
to show that there will be a profit.

Want more fanfic? Write it. Fanfic tends to spawn more fan fic. I haven't had
time to write fan fiction lately, though I do have a few ideas kicking
around, and I know many others in the same situation.

All great suggestions. I'm guessing I'm not the only
person that is a member of multiple online communities
and blogs such as LiveJournal and Friendster; it is on
my profile on Friendster. Personally, I've already
bought three copies each seasons 1 & 2, hooked friends
on the show, and since I joined this list two years
ago, I've contributed a fair bit of fanfic (while
juggling two jobs in real life). But buying multiple
copies of the DVD's isn't economically feasible for
some people.

If anyone else is interested, contact me offlist.
Lib's ideas are a great way to start. I'm suggesting a
concerted effort, a project plan with at least some
commitment from anyone interested. If no one is
interested, it will die a quick conceptual death :)

Not to step on any toes because the more efforts, the better, but maybe you
should check with Kickstart the Knight to see what their plans are. They may
appreciate someone doing a letter writing campaign or something like that. They
may even already have all the needed addresses. Great people at KtK<g>

I'm among those who couldn't buy multiple sets of Season 2, but if my
situation improves, they make great gifts <g>

KtK has flyers (or did at one time) which you can print out, copy, and take
to science fiction conventions. There's a science fiction convention somewhere
almost every weekend. Almost all of them have a "freebie" table for flyers.
THere are probably fans there that don't even know FK is on DVD now.

4.) In all your many acting endeavors, which is most
appealing to you and why?

NIGEL: FK, because of the fan reaction. However, I'm
doing lots of theatre at the moment, which I love.
There's nothing quite like a live audience.
