I think he did. He sure acted as if he knew SOMETHING was up with Nick. If he
suspected Nick was a vampire, I don't know, but he always acted as if he knew
some secret about him.

The flashbacks and sense of history is also what draws
me to Highlander (that and Adrian Paul *big big big

Buffy and FK are two completely separate types of
shows dealing with different worlds and rules, not to
mention being aimed at totally different audiences.
Just as "Dracula" and Anne Rice's vampires have some
similarities, you cannot compare FK and BtVS more than
loosely.

I bought a book last summer which is an excellent
comparative survey of vampires in modern culture. It
mentions both Buffy and FK (interestingly, when
looking at the Slayer, it portrays Nick as the
"slayer" in the FK mythos.)

The book is
Vampire Legends in Contemporary American Culture:
What Becomes a Legend Most -
by William Patrick Day

I highly recommend it for anyone looking at writing
original vampire genre fiction.

I got that feeling, too. I suspected from the second ep.

And remember that Vachon was there signing the treaty between the French and
the Iroquois..... Maybe stories of an ageless Spaniard were passed down
from generation to generation?

Just a reminder that the correct topic to include at the start of the

No "S" at the end.

The standouts were Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) and Spike (James
Marsters). And they were the only ones in the bunch who were trained
as stage actors. Yes, I do think it makes a big difference!

Oh, I have nightmares about the few flashbacks. David Boreanaz
attempting an Irish accent was an more chilling than any vampire demon
from the Hellmouth!

Nancy Kaminski
grateful that Ger CAN do accents

I enjoyed all 3 shows but never thought of the BTVS universe shows as being in
the same one as FK. The BTVS-verse shows were completely different in aim and
execution; I never thought of them in relation to FK, but loved each for its
own merit.

But now that it's been mentioned below, I think one of the main differences
between the FK vamps and the BTVS-verse vamps was that the BTVS vamps (including
the Angel series) were more static. In an early ep of BTVS (first season),
Buffy was able to identify a vampire by his arrested fashion sense - he was still
dressing like he did when he died in the 80's. While it's been argued with some
convincing proofs that our FK vampires may also be limited in their ability to
change from the emotional/mental maturity state they were in at the point they
were "brought across," they still retain enough "humanity" (?) to be able to
learn and grow in other areas.

Maybe that's the biggest difference between the 2 types. In the Buffy-verse,
the vamps are the remnants of people who have been killed, their bodies
inhabited by demon essences who adopt the memories and the baser qualities of the
people killed. In this universe, aside from the re-souling issue, it is a rarity
(but not an impossibility) for the vampire to become something more than a basic
psychotic killing machine. In the FK-verse, it seems to me that in being
brought across, the original person doesn't so much die as become imbued with
something "other," a virus or a spiritual essence that imparts overwhelming urges and
abilities that the original personality has to contend with. The nature of
that contention depends on the personality of that person. I think this is why we
see more varieties in personality among FK vamps -- Buffyverse vamps often run
in packs as though they only had one goal and little thinking ability for
themselves, FK vamps interact with each othe!
r but tend to be more solitary and to interact on their terms (aside from
familial relations, and even those show some variety depending on the motives of
the members).

I'd say so... All of the FK vamps seemed to have an aura (for lack of
a better word) of history around them. Yes, they fit right in with
the modern world, but there was a worldlyness about them. I think it
was hinted at during the show. It's a bit early and I am running
late for work, so I can't think of exact moments right now but I felt
it.
