I thought it was well written, but since I'm a devoted Nick/Natpacker, I was
terribly disappointed in the ending! :-P

Subject: Suggestion when Recommending Stories/Re: looking for a story

I think it would be helpful when recommending or discussing a story if
everyone would put N&N, N&J, Nat&LC, V&T or whatever beside the title. I
know a lot of the old-timers know the stories by name, and what they're
about, but not all of us have read the entire FK fan fiction web site.

There are so many factions, and like KC, I'm a N&Npacker and don't read any
fan fiction unless it links these two romantically together. I too have read
some that are misleading, spend my time reading the entire story, and the
end is so depressing that I wished I hadn't read it. This is not to say
other stories aren't well written, but it's not what I want to read.

I'm sure others would appreciate this too. I know I have friends who only
read Nick and Janette stories. So, this could help everyone when choosing
which fan fictions to read. I would love to see this become a standard
insert when fan fiction stories are discussed.

Hi, Gang ~
Yes, PLEASE send back reports, photos, anything you can from LCA! I was
actually going to try to pull it together and attend, but then my father got sick.
Dad died on Tuesday of this week {on my husband's birthday}, so I guess it's
a good thing I didn't get my tickets bought, etc. First time in my life that
being a truly hopeless procrastinator has actually worked in my favor.
We'll be having Dad's memorial service on Saturday, which I think is
the day of the auction. Please have fun and do something outrageous for me,
would ya?

Love,
Sami

I am in wholehearted agreement with this. Like Deb said, I've started reading
many a story, only to find out halfway through or right at the very end that it
wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I've reached the point where I check
out the ending of a story before reading it. It would be nice to not have to
do this <G>.

I know that many, many stories out there are very well-written, but I don't
like to read sad, depressing endings, and I only want to read NN stories.
Preferable DarkNN, but I'd rather have them together as mortals than not at all.

This is one reason why I'm creating a new DarkNN site, so that anyone who's
looking specifically for DarkNN stories can find as comprehensive a list as I can
make. I know I'm not the only DarkNN'er around :)

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one reading endings before spending time
reading an entire story. The tag of N&N, N&J and etc, would solve this.
Reading the ending first does take away from the story.

I would be very happy with this tag, but the ultimate would be another one:
silly/serious. This doesn't mean no humor, but the silly ones such as Nick
and Nat go to an all night grocery and bring home a cow type of thing. This
just doesn't do it for me. A story like this would have a tag such as:
Grazing Love (N&N/Silly). Where a serious story's tag would be: Immortal
Love (N&J/Serious).

I'm so glad to hear you're still working on the new Dark NN site. I too
prefer them ending up as vampires. I do like the stories where they find a
way to keep Nat a mortal, but I eventually want her to join him. I love the
Dark side.

Hello All!

I'm still attempting to contact Cousin Mids (Jennifer K. Okerlund) and was
wondering if anyond may have old tape tree lists, or trip lists from 1998 or 1999
which might have a snail mail address for her.

In 1998 she lived in Virginia, however I do not know which city.

If you come across any information, please contact me off list at:
sellersjr@c....... or sellers.robert@m.......

If I've learned anything, it is hard to hide from internet searches, but Mids
apparently has managed to do so after 1998-1999. I even managed to find a
friend who claimed she had managed to hide herself from search engines...

Many Thanks!

Okay, let's go on a 'Knight Crusade' to label all stories next to the title,
with the faction and emotion.

Subject: Story types -- do we really need labels?

Many authors post what type of story something is in their prefatory notes
(disclaimers, thanks to beta readers, thanks to Parriott/Sony/etc.)

OTOH, it's been my take that one should expose onesself to *all* these
types of stories (with the possible exception of the "adult" stories) to
get a more rounded view of how other fans see the characters. Over time, I
find that those stories I have problems tend to be those that are not
well-written and true to the characters' screen behaviors, rather than
those that emphasize a particular (speculated) offscreen relationship. I
also find it difficult to read fanfic stories written in a connected series
-- at some point the story universe veers off in a completely different
direction from the canonical one, the characters often become completely
unlike the canonical ones, and the story-series-specific relationships
become harder and harder to follow.

But reading these stories and seeing other viewpoints I think gives one a
more three-dimensional view of the canonical characters.

That being said, though, I've kind of run out of time to keep up with the
fanfic (both reading and writing) and am still hesitating about the
upcoming War...

Subject: Re: Story types -- do we really need labels?

You have a valid point. But what it boils down to is that I like what I like,
and I don't want to read something that isn't to my tastes. For instance, when
it comes to reading romance books, I ONLY read paranormal romance (with one or
two rare exceptions). Why? Because general romance doesn't interest me. I
want the stories with vampires, werewolves, ghosts, stuff like that. The same
goes with fanfiction. I only want to read stories that put Nick and Nat together
in a relationship. Am I limiting myself? Of course, but that's my choice.

For myself, I love stories that veer off into an alternate universe from FK
canon. Stories that stick to canon are fine, don't get me wrong, but I love
exploring the "what if" that AU's present. Again, it's a matter of preference. And
there are plenty of fanfics out there that cater to just about anyone's taste.

Thus the request for labels.

No offense to other factions, but I have no desire to read Val or IB stories,
or anything other than NN stories. With a label at the beginning, I can skip
stories that don't appeal to me and read only the ones that do. As it stands
now, like I said, I check the ending and see if NN end up together. If they do,
I'll read it. If they don't (or if one of 'em dies in the process), I
absolutely refuse to read it. Again, I know I'm missing out on many great stories and
excellent writing, but that's my choice to make.

Wouldn't this ruin the prospect of a surprise ending? Most of my favorite
works of fiction had a surprise twist at the end, insterting "silly" or "sad" at
the beginning would tip me off to this before I even started it.

I kinda agree with Brenda. I see the point Deborah
and Stacy have, esp. if you have limited time to read.
(I mostly don't read the fics at all, unless Megan or
Rose recommends one.) But then, I don't have much in
the way of faction leanings. I just like good
writing. Maybe stories ought to come with labels for
that! okay, I know, it wouldn't work.

Of course, authors can put anything they want to in a note at the beginning of
a story, but as the listowner for Fkfic-l, I can say that it's not going to be
a requirement. Not everybody writes with a faction or a particular set of
characters in mind and it's possible that having to label might inhibit ihibit some
authors' creativity.
