Yep, Christopher Plummer was a Klingon, General Chang. He was a very
memorable villain. I would have loved to see him live on stage,
especially with Ger.

ALL NYC theater productions are recorded for the archives, but
whether or not they are broadcast... well, that is another story.
Hopefully, it will become available on dvd or something.

Is that Entertainment or EMILY Television?

So one of us personable types needs to develop a deep and meaningful
relationship with someone who works in the archives!

Yes. If I remember correctly, Parriot said in that interview that sex for
FK vampires is "both at the neck and below the waist."

But his creative intention wouldn't mean anything if he hadn't gotten it
into the story on screen, of course. So, for canon, we should consider
episodes like "Baby, Baby" (after, Serena thought she had been impregnated,
which she would not likely have thought without traditional intercourse),
"Dance by the Light of the Moon" (choreography suggests N/J human-style
intercourse), "If Looks Could Kill" (the Baroness, who seems otherwise so
well informed about vampires, asks Nick to prove she's still attractive by
having sex with her even after she accepts that he will not convert her to
vampirism -- a problematic tidbit in many ways). Additionally, the
choreography of "Sons of Belial" may suggest "below the waist" interaction
(progressively non-consensual, however), and "Blackwing" seems structured
to suggest the same (Natalie's "morning after" crack).

If one interprets Serena as woozy and delusional, then the others do slide
without too much effort. It seems to me that room does exist to interpret
FK canon as accommodating restriction to "at the neck" sex, but just
barely, and it's not the prevailing slant. The circumstantial evidence
supports Parriot's stated intention strongly enough to relegate the other
to alternate-universe constructions.

Of course, you often can't beat a good alternate universe for drilling to
the heart of a theme.

Yes, and thus the beauty of first season, where Lacroix, having been killed
and existing only in Nick's imagination and memory, is the perfect symbol
and anchor for all of that. Dead, he's concentrated symbolism. Free,
flexible, pure. Once they brought him back, he had to become a fully
rounded character, motivated and sympathized and bounded, and the symbolism
muddied and melted . . . until the story lost something marvelous.

Oh, sure, it gained stuff, too. But for me, there's something rare and
enthralling in first season that never quite returns. I can't help but pin
it on Lacroix's move from figurative to figured.

I'm hoping it will be part of next season's "Live at Lincoln Center" on PBS.
They've aired Shakespearean plays done at the Beaumont before. Hmm. I wonder
who you'd write to to request that?

You could always start with your local PBS station, especially if you donate
$$. They may not have much authority for what gets on "Live at Lincoln Center"
but if the producers of that series start getting a lot of requests for King
Lear, maybe, just maybe.. of course, for those of us who didn't make it to see
Ger's performance, it would be too convenient to get it on local TV (nothing
with FK was ever that easy but we can fantasize!)

I e-mailed WNET some time ago asking if there were plans to do it for Great
Performances or On Stage or something similar, but I never heard back from
them.

Subject: food and female characters

On NPR's "All Things Considered" this evening, I heard an interesting piece
on 1950s food. Among other things, it explained that the food industry
faced a huge cultural blockade when it first tried to sway consumers to
prepackaged foods. Apparently, market research of the day demonstrated a
virulent prejudice against those who would use prepackaged and convenience
items -- conviction that a woman who bought <gasp!> cake mix or instant
coffee was, at best, a selfish, neglectful slattern.

Obviously, the industry has since swayed us. Thank goodness. ;-)

Likely because I'm catching up on forkni digests tonight, natch, two FK
images occurred to me with that article. The first was from the 1950s,
with some human woman friend of Nick's attempting to express disapproval of
Janette, failing to find the words, and finally resorting to the slur,
"Why, she probably uses instant coffee and cake mix!" Nick would
truthfully deny this attack on Janette's behalf.

The second image was Natalie, present-day, and her food associations. It
would be very easy to characterize her as simply the modern end of the
progression, citing her oft-cited microwaved meal in "Be My
Valentine." However, I believe the references are more complicated for
Natalie, as they are for the culture. In "Only the Lonely," we see
Natalie's pantry extravagantly stocked with assorted noodles and spices and
jars of all sorts. But her first-season apartment becomes her
second-season apartment, and the gourmand's-delight pantry becomes the
two-minute plate. We no longer culturally disapprove of prepackaged foods,
but a difference still exists, deeper than the preservatives and
flash-freezing. Is Natalie's independence and vigor as a character in each
season proportionate to her meals? What, then, would be third season's
marker -- the raw groceries in "Night in Question"?

Just a thought.

I'd go with EMILY Television, and most of the civilized world would
be far happier...
I called it ETV-Educational TV, but someone else posted more
correctly with PBS. Public Broadcasting. :)

I'm not always aware of what is on TV. My TV has a radio built in and
I often listen to it instead of watching it.

Would whomever it is that provides us with the wonderful listing each
month of all ex-FK cast members in programs on all the channels I
can't get, please keep an eye on PBS and see if maybe those of us who
couldn't get to NY might get to see Mr. Wyn Davies in King Lear on
our very own TVs? Maybe they'll even letterbox it so we could see the
whole stage!

Blah. Apparently the 'Live' part of 'Live from Lincoln Center' is more
literal
than 'taped before an audience.' As in, if it was going to appear on that
particular PBS program, it would have shown up during the play's run.

'On Stage' only presents programs from the Kennedy Center, I think,
and I can't remember the last time I saw 'Great Performances' do a
stage play. 'Stage On Screen' might be a possibility, but it's been over
a year since I've seen something new in that series.

You know you're a Forever Knight fan when other people, unbeknownst to you,
check out FK books for you. Tonight a good friend handed me Anne
Hathaway-Nayne's These Our Revels, checked out from a public library near here.
He offered
to renew it if need be, so after finals, someone's going to be busy...
You also know you're an FK fan when you spend an hour scouring your school's
