Hi,

While packing to move I ran across a gray t-shirt size XL that has a very
nice artist drawing of Vachon with Screed and Urs in the background. At the
bottom it says Running with the Crew.

I only have one so it's first come first serve. All I'm asking for is
postage. :) The shirt has been worn but it is freshly washed and in very good
condition.

Contact me off list if you're interested in it.

<Nick's Cafe>
Cheryl et al,
Perhaps the cafe is related to the "Nicholas Catering" van I saw the other
day. The van was one that Nat could have used 10 years ago, even the paint for
the logo looked about that old! Wonder what they were delivering...

What about the analogy of sex and vampire feeding? Didn't Parriott himself
say that the sexual act never goes below the neck for vampires?

If that's the case, there are covert implications in a vampire being both a
sexual predator as well as a carnivorous predator. How does a vampire
choose the person they bring across? Janette seemed attracted to Nick, yet
it was LaCroix who bit him, who "consummated" the arrangement. One could
even argue that such a relationship, between master and progeny, is more
like "soul mates" than anything mortals can experience, as evidenced by Nick
and LaCroix being able to sense each other, to feel things about the other
without the need for physical contact. Nick and LaCroix have a bond that
can never be matched by Nick and Janette (or Nick and Nat), no matter what
feelings of friendship and love they share for each other.

If sex is in the neck for vampires, and if one vampire bringing another
across binds them as some sort of preternatural soul mates, couldn't gender
play a role in this? Canon sets up some sort of sexual attraction between
Vachon and Urs -- at the very least before she was brought across, but
possibly after as well. Why couldn't the same be said for Nick and LaCroix?
What was it about Nick that made LaCroix want him by his side for all
eternity? And it is Nick, of all his creations, with whom LaCroix seems the
most perpetually interested. It borders on obsession, it borders on lust,
it borders on urges both carnal and spiritual. There is an attraction
between them that -- despite their disagreements over the years, despite
Nick's quest to atone for his sins -- keeps them together.

Beyond Nick and LaCroix are Vachon and Screed -- at the very least, close
friends for centuries -- yet Vachon allows Screed to feed directly from him
in 'Fever' ... if biting is a sexual act for vampires, then that's a very
intimate thing he did.

Amy also wrote, about 'Fever':
>However, the metaphor chosen in "Fever" has troubled me
>...especially when it ... gets applied to the entire series....
>...FK vampires either choose their vampirism or have it
>imposed on them, depending on your reconciliation of "Near Death" and
>"Hearts of Darkness;" in neither case is FK vampirism naturally inborn
>in anyone.

(sorry for snipping so much of this well written paragraph)

I like this idea of "naturally inborn." Can it encompass vampirism? What
if homosexuality and heterosexuality are not two distinct states of being
(points in space, if you will), but a connected line? What if all people
fell somewhere on that line, so their degree of sexuality is unique to them,
with some people being either 100% homosexual or 100% heterosexual, but with
the majority of people being somewhere along that line, where the closer you
are to either extreme the more likely you are to feel comfortable at that
extreme (with society dictating how open you can be with that
comfortableness)?

With this as a premise, what if the inclination toward vampirism is the
same? From a mortal perspective, this could mean some people believing it's
real and some people not believing, to varying degrees; some people seeking
out that lifestyle (even seeking out to be brought across) and others
avoiding it, again to varying degrees.

But from a "near death" perspective, what if some people are "naturally
inborn" to accept the vampire "virus"; perhaps Urs falls into this category.
Mentally/spiritually, she wants to die, but physically she can't, because
her immune system makes her susceptible to the vampire virus and naturally
contracts it once exposed. But what if vampirism isn't a virus but an
actual decision at the brink of death? Perhaps Nick and Vachon fall into
this category -- neither sought out vampirism, but when faced with death
they wouldn't choose it, because they weren't ready to die (I forget what
Nick specifically says about immortality appealing to him; while Vachon
says, "I was young. There was a world out there."); instinctual decision
more than conscious decision kept them from walking through that door to the
afterlife. In either case, once they are vampires, they're faced with the
conscious decision of how they live their immortal lives. For vampires in
general, one extreme would be pure predator, while the other would be total
abstinence, but most vampires fall somewhere in between with vampire society
dictating which end of the spectrum is the more "acceptable" one. Nick goes
against the dictates of vampires society, shuns their ways and beliefs, to
do what he feels is right for himself, to stop killing, to atone for his
sins; he comes out of the closet, as it were, and lives his chosen
lifestyle, even though it goes against what a vampire is supposed to be.
Can't help thinking that this line from "Heathers" somehow applies: 'I love
my dead, gay son!'

There's another metaphor here about LaCroix thinking that Nick's lifestyle
is not normal or natural for a vampire, similar to what some heterosexuals
think about homosexuality. There's also that perceived threat that this
"alternative" lifestyle poses, yet how is Nick's lifestyle a threat to other
vampires? Other than giving Vachon the occasional lecture about
responsibility and the odd club kid a lecture on dental hygiene, Nick isn't
trying to subvert the vampire community; he's not trying to turn vampires
into conscientious objectors. In fact, it's LaCroix who is trying to
convince Nick that he should go back to being a "real" vampire, because
LaCroix doesn't think it's right the way Nick is acting. Again, it's some
heterosexuals out there trying to convince homosexuals that they should be
straight because homosexuality is wrong; it's not homosexuals trying to
convince anybody that they should be gay, just that they should be who they
are and that they should be allowed to be who they want to be.

Just an idle thought, or two.

Gads, it seems like I've been living in the twilight zone lately-- one day
doesn't connect with the next, and last week barely exists. Each day is an
existential eternity that suddenly finds itself over with the night. I realized
lately that it's a case of highly repetative work mixed with classes I'm taking
because I have to, not because I enjoy them, and hence no free time to do the
things I love. But how to ammend it? Before, I always took minutes here and there
to write FK-fic, but I've kind of fallen out of the habit, and nearly out of
the fandom all together. I figured my FK phase was passing.
Then, dinking around on my computer, I decided to play a few of Kristin's music
videos, which I've always enjoyed, and found myself violently reminded why I
fell in love in with the show in the first place. Ye gads, the passion! The
story! The characters! (Heck, I nearly found myself in tears!) If you've never
seen them, GO! Dowload! It takes a while, but it's worth it! As for me, keep
your eyes open. My fic-sabbatical is about to end. <G>

JP actually explcitly rejected the concept behind the "Imagine never making
love below the neck" advertisement, which was not his doing.
