Subject: Season of Change by Deborah A. Hymon--Winner of the "Yuletide Award"

Midnight Passions now has "Season of Change" by Deborah A. Hymon, a Forever
Knight, Dark Nick and Nat, Christmas Story posted. The new post includes
the "Yuletide Award" plaque, final edit, several scene additions to story
and epilogue , and music (What Child Is This). This story can be accessed
at:

http://homepage.mac.com/hymonb/MidnightPassions/

I added to the scenes because I felt it enhanced the story, and covered
topics that weren't originally mentioned in the epilogue. Several readers
have already told me the additions improved the scenes. I hope you'll enjoy
the story. I would love to hear from readers with your thoughts. Remember,
feedback is important to fan fiction writers, and encourages us to continue
writing.

I started writing Forever Knight fan fiction a year ago. The Forever Knight
Family has been very supportive of my writing, and to the personal events
that took place this last year of my life. I would like to thank you for
all the wonderful emails that I've received. I'm proud to be a part of this
wonderful group of people.

Happy New Year!

Fondly,

</snip>

I've tried saying the same thing before, but it's pointless. The complaining,
bad reviews --> bad sales, etc., are going to continue until the other
seasons aren't offered. I've come to accept the fact that the other seasons
probably won't be released--better to let yourself down easy than to keep your
hopes up. What really bothers me is that people were willing to pay just about
anything to have them released, but when they were, there was complaining over
the higher price too. Ask yourselves this...if the show hadn't been released,
what were you willing to pay? Look at what a LOT of people paid per season for
Kristin's vcds. Maybe everyone is broke now, i don't know. But i'll say
this, i did my part, i bought two sets. If i thought it'd make a difference,
i'd buy more sets, but i don't think it'll help b/c i'm hearing more complaining
than efforts to buy as many sets as possible to make the sales look good.

Is it just me, or is this just depressing?

Yeah, I have to agree with you. It seems all I hear
is how much the price is, or how there's no extras. We
*should* be very thankful indeed, that FK ever came
out, let alone on DVD, int he first place. I've bought
four copies of the set so far. One I ordered from
Amazon and the rest came for the Suncoast at the mall.
One set's for me, the other my dad, the third a backup
and the other I'm willing to part with.

Counting Christmas presents I ended up with 4 sets. Does that help
the numbers and improve our chances of getting seasons 2 and 3? I
think I have the rest of family trained to be looking for them...and
several friends as well.

How does ANYONE know this yet??? All DVDs drop in sales after the initial
release. Try finding the first season of many other shows several seasonal
release down the line. Look how the DVDs are selling like hotcakes on eBay (I
know, as I auctioned one of my extra sets off when I needed money) - eBay DOES
count because all those people had to buy the sets they are selling from
somewhere!

It also depends on how many sets Sony expected to sell. They may have hit
their goal already, none of us know for sure. We're not talking a series as
popular as Star Trek or Buffy or a number of other series. Sony would not have
released it as Part 1 of a TRILOGY if there were not plans to release the other
two seasons.

And I saw very few people complaining about the price to the point they
weren't buying it. As pointed out time and time again by many of us on this
very list, the price was not all that bad considering many factors.

Yes, we need to sell as many sets as possible. But we also need to start
kickstarting the Knight for season 2. Has anyone started writing Sony asking
when season 2 is coming out? Have we started that campaign yet?

If so, it sure wasn't brought up on this list - the main FK fandom list.

Let's chill out - we have no idea if it will be released or not, so why get
all depressed about it. Leave the angsting to Nick ;-D hehehehe <wRPg>

I agree with you too. I bought two sets - one from amazon and one
from a local video store (best buy hadn't opened yet at the time) I
kept one set and gave the other to my brother. He was out of a job,
so would not have been able to afford the "luxury". I do plan to buy
another set for a friend who doesn't have a lot of extra money and I
have offered to do the same for a couple of listmembers.
I remember when people were asking TPTB for FK in ANY format, and
telling them they would buy multiple copies at any price. Now that
their request is a reality, all of a sudden their promises are not
being fulfulled.
Although I DO think that Sony put the dvds out to make money, I also
believe they were responding to the years of petitioning by fans.
They would not have even known about the fan base without those
letters and promises, and therefore would not have even considered
putting out the dvds. Companies do not put out a product if they
aren't sure there will be a market for it. That would be a gamble on
their part - and most companies go with the sure thing.
I, for one, am getting really tired of the complaining. Yeah, so
what they don't have extras, so what they aren't digitally
remastered. They exist! Why can't we be happy with that?
I am really hoping that Sony listens to all the thanks and praise
they get and ignore the complainers who seem will never be satisfied.

Sorry to be so preachy, but this nitpicking is really getting old.

L&O Fandom (a series that has been running 13 years and spawned 3 spinoffs)
has been waiting 2 years for season 2 to be released. It was supposed to have
been released in 2003, but that date was rescinded and no new release date
announced. Speculation is lack of sales for Season 1. Much like FK, the L&O
boxset lacked the extras, perks or anything "special" and garnered much
complaint.

So it's always possible that TPTB will decide not to release the other seasons.
Tho, L&O producers have since released a set of "producer's picks," video
games and a coffee table book, none or which particularly impressed the masses
since they weren't their picks. I myself have bought everything released,
without complaint, in hopes of getting the other seasons on DVD.

****I'm sure the petitions had a lot to do with this. Let's face it, no
matter how much we love our show, this is not in the ball park with
"Friends". We are darn lucky to finally get this in any format!

****Some people are never happy, and have to complain about something. I
wish they would please consider that the majority of us want more seasons.
They are jeopardizing our chances for the remaining seasons. As I said
earlier, the complaining also detours new fans from purchasing the DVD's and
keeps the sales down!

****Dito! Can someone maybe start a campaign to thank Sony and request
Season 2 and 3? I would be the first to write the letter to thank them and
ask.

***Amanda, I totally agree with you! It's one thing to announce to groups
if you're having technical problems with your set of DVD's, but to nitpick
over minor flaws is ridiculous! Please remember, as I've said before, this
was not a popular TV show or movie. We're darn lucky to get Sony to release
this. I'm so grateful for what we have. Yes, all of us would have liked
more, but be thankful for what you have! I bought two sets and plan to buy
more as gifts.

This fandom is notorious for coming up with great promotion ideas, but I
think the Firefly fans have one up'ed us in ingenuity this time. They are
collecting monies to purchase Firefly DVD sets to send to the troops. The
sets will be sent to various USO facilities for the troops to watch; This
not only supports the troops overseas, but it ups the sales for the DVD and
they are able to promote the potential Firefly movie that is set to come about.

Sony TriStar has made a habit of treating FK fans like dirt, believing that
they could throw us anything. The grumblings are understandable. I think we
need to get past it though and promote this DVD in as many places as
possible and work together to up the sales numbers with a creative idea
like the Firefly fans (yes, I'm a FF fan).

But we're again talking apples and oranges. I don't think you can
compare Law and Order (3 spinoffs, 13 years, and repeats on 24 hours a
day on multiple channels) to FK. It's entirely possible that they've
got a grand marketing scheme going on here---they might have figured
they wouldn't sell so many boxed sets of episodes that are constantly
being shown somewhere on cable, and decided to sell fans stuff they
haven't seen (such as the coffeetable book and game you mentioned).

Whereas FK has no spinoffs, isn't seen all that often now on cable,
and certainly doesn't have anything like coffeetable books in the
offing. The only marketing plan, I think, is to produce the barebones
eps on DVDs. That way Sony will squeeze a few more pennies out of a
product that otherwise probably doesn't bring in much.

Let's just sit tight, let Sony know we appreciate that they gave us
Season 1, and ask nicely for Seasons 2 and 3.

Nancy Kaminski

PS---Kickstart the Knight has an auction planned, the proceeds of
which will be used in part to let Sony know we appreciate the Season 1
DVDs, and to ask them for Seasons 2 and 3.

I completely agree, and my reply wasn't meant to compare the two. My reply
was in direct response to the idea that " Sooy would not have released it as
Part 1 of a TRILOGY if there were not plans to release the other two seasons"
which I don't believe is necessarily true.>
>
My point was that if TPTB can cancel or postpone indefinitely the release of
DVDs for a show as big as L&O, doing the same for the relatively small FK
would be nothing.
This is especially true if the release of Trilogy Part One was a market
test. Yes, they may have had this grand marketing plan in the works, but when
response from the first phase is negative - low sales, negative feedback/comment
about the DVDs themselves with suggestions that they're not worth the cost - it
would be nothing at all for them to cut their losses here and now and scrap
any and all future releases.

It will cost them money to make money. And if there isn't at least a hint
that they will at the very least break even with future DVD releases, they're
probably not going to bother to put them together for release.

The reason I said Sony wouldn't have released part 1 as part 1 of a trilogy
unless there were plans to release it, is they KNOW it'd piss off the fans. But
"plans to release" does not mean 100% certainty they will. I've had some
marketing training and definitely some show business related courses and even
experience.

My point is it is too soon to start "oh, poor us, they won't release part 2."
Does anyone have sales figures based on *Sony's* expectations of what they
thought would sale vs. what did sale? I seriously doubt it. I'm reading posts
about "all the negativity about the DVDs" and saying, especially at this VERY
early point, that Sony is not releasing Season 2 is most definitely negative.
We do NOT know.

I'm quite sure Sony did not expect FK to sell millions of this DVD. Remember
how we were snatching them up at the beginning? Those sales DO count. Plus,
there are people not on this list on in on-line fandom buying them. How do I
know? People who do not know I'm into FK mentioned "this wonderful series" to
me.

The DVDs are relatively inexpensive to make. The thing we need to do is make
sure people know they ARE available and out there. WRite Sony and let them
know how much we appreciate it, and are looking forward to season 2 (ask when
it will be out).

Let's not start saying Season 2 won't be released until we hear OFFICIALLY.
Rumors get started that could come back to haunt us. Be positive and WORK for
Season 2.

I remember all the negativity about "we'll never get FK on video/DVD, why
bother."

Up until now, the discussion was solely about technical possibilities -- not
budgets, not fan base, not profit-margin. It was proposed that FK's film
stock was the reason for the less-than-DVD image quality on its DVD set. As
a camera buff with an informed opinion about film and the DVD production
process, I disagreed.

As for being "ludicrous to criticize," I resent that. My opinion is my own
and I refuse to be berated for having one. I don't have to make a good
impression on Sony. It is they who have to make a good impression on me with
their products if they want my money. If Sony truly is listening, then they
_want_ to know what we think anyway. In any case, telling Sony what they did
*right* with the product, as you infer, will not show them where they can
improve.

A friend and I were discussing FK's DVD image quality today and how I'd like
to see it improved. We discussed how I'd forego extras in favor of image
improvement and especially sound re-mixing for stereo and 5.1 Dolby. He and
I both agreed that a restoration job was unlikely to happen. But, that
doesn't prevent me from being mildly disappointed that the package could
have been better.

So, as Forrest Gump would say: "That's all I have to say about that."

I have to strongly agree with Roman here. I know that these DVDs could have
looked much better given the proper treatment. Sony crammed them onto only 5
DVDs for goodness sake and did nothing to clean the picture. FK should have
been on at least 6 discs to look good and not suffer from over-compression.
A lot of scenes on my own DVD recordings off Sci-fi look better than theirs.
Sad but true. "Constructive criticism" can be very helpful and if Sony is
actually listening perhaps they will do better with the other seasons or
perhaps they don't care either way. I hope they do though. "Forever Knight"
is a classic and deserves to be treated like one.

You Know You've Become Obsessed With Forever Knight When:

You realize that you're probably the only Stargate SG1 fan that
didn't hate the sixth season episode Nightwalkers, which is
followed by the realization that you only liked it because Blu
Mankuma played the Sherriff.

You're reading a book called *How to Make it in Book Publishing*,
and it mentions a recently published how-to book titled *How to
Get a Date with a Vampire and What to Do with him Once You've Got
Him* and you can't help wondering whether Tracy or Natalie needs
it more... Although for all I know Nat wrote the book.

I didn't mean to stir things up.
I'm quite happy with my FK DVD's.
I did buy two sets, but sold one to
another fan.

I was just disappointed in the advertising or the
lack thereof.

I never saw any mention in SciFi's magazine, Starlog,
Entertainment Weekly. I'm not talking big budget full or
half page ads. Just in what's being released. Nor can
I remember any mention in these on the upcoming
release list.

Note: M*A*S*H has/had been advertised.
In magazines, TV guide for one with
those irritating cardboard inserts.
Plus they were released on video tape with advertising.

I just thought with a little more advertising, more sets would
sell. I mentioned the DVD's to someone who is a fan and they
had no idea they had been released.

So please forgive my stirring the pot up.

Mary Lynn

>>Yes, we need to sell as many sets as possible. But we also need to start
kickstarting the Knight for season 2. Has anyone started writing Sony asking
when season 2 is coming out? Have we started that campaign yet?<<

KtK will be starting a campaign for this during February...notices will be
sent out to the lists about it in a week or so.

Subject: Kickstart The Knight FK Fiction Contest

This is posted with Lisa's permission :)
.................................................................
Greetings, Forever Knight fans!

Another holiday is approaching, and in its honor the Crusader crew has
decided to hold another fiction contest. The last one was so much fun, we
couldn't resist. This holiday is, of course, Valentine's Day.

CONTEST RULES
-- Stories must be about Valentine's Day and romance
-- Any and all FK characters may be used
-- Stories can be up to 7500 words long (short story length)
-- Crossovers are allowed, as long as the FK characters are primary
-- Stories must be submitted in TEXT FORMAT to Susan Ellen Field,
SField8067@a......., by February 1, 2004

All submitted stories will be posted on the Crusader website (
www.nancykam.com/crusader). Readers will be able to vote for their favorite
story from February 3 to February 13 (this gives us time to post the stories on
the website), and the winner will be announced by Valentine's Day, February 14.

The winner of the contest will be awarded a big Valentine's heart and a
certificate! Writers, warm up your keyboards, let your romantic side shine
through, and get writing!
