Yes, even to the point of lobbying Congress to get copyright law changed;
And they succeeded.  "Steamboat Willie" was about to enter the public domain
and then copyright law was changed from "Life of the Author plus 50 years"
to "Life of the author plus 70 years."

Copyright law was intended to protect the rights of creators of works and
their immediate heirs.  Now, unfortunately, we have corporations who hold
and renew copyrights regularly with the effect that modern intellectual
property _never_ makes it to the public domain. . . which was never the
intent of the law. :(
