I've never had an employer ask to see my social security number. I, too,
memorized my number long ago. I do have my card (obtained when I was in third
grade, and the signiture on it is laughably, obviously that of a kid). At our
company we ask for two forms of id to complete the I-9 form that is required
by the Department of Immigration. Usually people supply either a birth
certificate or SS card and a Drivers License or State Issued ID. Federal Law
in the US requires this. If the INS comes in and audits your personnel files
and the I-9 and copies of the proper ID's are not included, the company can
be fined $10,000 per violation, and it doesnt matter if the employee in
question is a citizen or not. Its not a requirement to use the SS card, but
its one of the easiest forms of ID that most employees possess.

I don't know what is required in Canada, but if it were me, I would make sure
to get a replacement card.

Yes it is true that you can refuse to give your ss# for any reason other than
taxes.
And it indeed may sound drastic but once you become a victim of identity fraud
to the tune of thousands of dollars you find out just how quickly you will stop
giving that number out.
And i don't have near the money Nick had. out of curiosity does canada have
the same problem with identity fraud that the united states does?

Shivering at the thought of what LC would do to a perpetrator trying to become
him. LOL

In a past discussion of this, someone, I think it was
Denise (Ithildin) pointed out that approx. 100 years
after the original conquering of Gaul that the events
in the "Druids" movie depict there was an uprising in
Gaul. That is more likely to have fallen during
LaCroix' time as a mortal, he could have been the
general quelling that insurrection.

The movie was adapted (I understand done badly) from
the book by Morgan Llywellyn, which I recommend.

I had to get a SIN when I was in grade 13. in order to write my exams.
Nick would have to have one. It is the first question they ask on the income
tax form after your date of birth. and you have to put it on the back of
your cheque when you pay your taxes.

that being so there is no way they would put Nick's SIN # on his id.

and yes there are problems with people stealing identities in Canada.
Because of these problems some one I know who lost her bank card is now
having a trouble getting a new one f. Simply because she can't produce
identification with her picture on it. she doesn't have a driver's license.

Speaking of cards and identification.
Nick would be expected to be able to produce an OHIP card as well
(Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan) Evidently he had one by the third
season episode when he got shot. it is one of the first things they want.

Yeah I know Natalie does his physicals but there is no reason why she
shouldn't get paid for them. and twhat about the flu shot. I believe
it's compulsory for police and paramedics and people like that.

this year they are strongly advising everyone to have one.

Nat, would have to fake the flu shot, since Nick doesn't get sick. But then
again, I guess he could go and get one, providing he doesn't vamp out when
they stick him with the needle. <BG>

So . . . He could just say he got one somewhere else
Or Nat could give him one & just give him a vile of blood or something

Or even if he did get a real anti-flu shot
I'm sure his muntant healing factor would burn it up

The state of Minnesota will issue an ID card to non-drivers (my Aunt
Nellie doesn't drive; this is what she shows when required). It looks
a lot like a driver's license---plastic, with picture, address, vital
stats, mag strip, and a long ID number, but it clearly says that it
isn't a driver's license. It's a different color stripe on it, too, to
distinguish it.

Doesn't Ontario do something similar? Or is the SIN card considerred
that sort of ID?

Perhaps, as you said, because it was decommissioned, but here's my two cents:

find out where Schanke got his.

I had a lovely souvlaki in a shop in the Toronto university
area---tangy sauce, touch of garlic, and very tasty lamb. And it was
cheap! Doesn't get any better than that!

Except for people with certain allergies like chicken and eggs (and
sunlight?) - which is why the Only things Schanke has seen him eat are pasta
and hot dogs (The Fix).

Eggs? I thought that was just mumps.

Which makes me wonder what common "childhood" diseases would Nick
have possibly survived in his childhood. Does anyone know? I'd think
the Plague, but we saw him deal with that after he had been turned
into a vampire. Somehow chickenpox, measles and mumps just don't seem
as if they would be the diseases he would have dealt with.
Were typhoid and tetanus problems?

From what I've read, if a child didn't die by the time he was five, it
was likely that he'd have a very strong immune system and would remain
reasonably healthy if well-nourished. However, common diseases, such
as flu, chicken pox, measles, mumps, whooping cough, and the like
could be and were often fatal.

> Were typhoid and tetanus problems?

Yes, and dysentery, skin diseases, and...you name it, they had it.
Poor sanitation, nutrition, no medicine to speak of, took their toll.

Subject: Re: Identity theft (was: Justifiable SIN)

Yes, we have identity theft problems here in Canada. My husband was
nearly a victim a few years ago, so I listened with great interest to
the suggestions on how to fight it on a recent CBC radio show. Here are
the main points:

First, all somebody needs to have to steal your identity is your name
and birthdate. So don't let anyone see that if you're filling out forms
(e.g. job applications), and make sure you keep ID with this info out of
plain view. Many times, though, identity theft begins with bank
employees.

Second, check your credit history every month through Equifax.com (or
another major credit bureau whose name escapes me) to make sure you're
not on record as receiving loans or credit transactions that you didn't
request. If you request your own personal credit report through the
mail, it's free; on the net, it's roughly $20.

We all know what Lacroix would do if somebody stole his identity--but
how would he find that person? Maybe he would need help from a certain
detective? And what would Nick do if he was a victim?

Your very humble & most obedient servant,
Ligeia

. I imagine that's what the actors had, since they managed to talk without
lisping!

I spoke to Kathryn Long's mother at a convention several years ago while
wearing my fangs. She was surprised, since I'm not a professional, that I
could talk so well with them. She said it took forever for her daughter to
learn to talk around them.

but seriously, vampires go through identities like
mortals do clothes. Aristotle (no doubt) would have
no trouble doing just about anything you wanted from
simply creating a new persona for you to obliterating
the thief's identity. (that could be amusing...)

After all this talk about identities, I wonder. We know that Nick went

that? He was always LaCroix no matter what the year was. Of course I
don't remember anyone else addressing LaCroix in another time other than
Nick or Janette.
