Subject: Souvlaki: The Hamburger of Greece

I knew that souvlaki was a Greek wrap-sandwich but didn't know much beyond
that. So, I did a search on souvlaki and found a very informative web page
on it in English. . . including the difference between souvlaki on a skewer
and on pita. (Schanke ate it on pita.) The only bad thing about the web
page was the title: "Souvlaki: The Hamburger of Greece." (Say it out loud
for a chuckle.)

Also, I found a decent recipe for souvlaki here:

http://www.capaldi.com/souvlaki.htm

and another one here, but it doesn't mention pita

http://www.recipeland.com/s/souvlaki_with_tzaziki.html

and then there's this one:

http://www.hookerycookery.com/greek018.htm

And, just for grins, I'd like to mention that one of my searches turned up
this tag: "Click here to buy Souvlaki on CD!" Apparently there's a _band_
that calls itself Souvlaki. Heh.

Actually, my brother lived in Greece for two years,
and he said that "souvlaki" is really a shish kabob
that can be put on bread. If you want a "hamburger
from greece", try a gyro--hot with chunks of meat and
peppers and good stuff covered with a yummy sauce...
/me starts to drool. Geoffrey made them for us once,
but he said that his suck compared to what you can get
in Athens. <bg> He's offered to give a list of the
best gyro shops in Greece!

Laura (who's never had souvlaki, but now has
inherited her brother's gyro fixtation)

Aren't silver bullets more for werewolves? I always
thought that to kill a werewolf, they had to be "shot
with a silver bullet from the hand of one who loves
them".

I think it depends on where the legend is coming from. Different areas had
different defences against the dark. I know that vampire legends vary greatly
from russia to Japan to eastern europe.

I think it's eastern europe (around Hungary maybe?) that the silver and
werewolf thing is from. Don't quote me on it. Iwill have to ask my Hungarian
friends about that one.
