I belong to several genealogical lists  A while back I found this on the
Devon list.

From time to time on genealogy lists there are various theories put
forth as to the naming of children. Perhaps therefore a comment
I read in a book review of 8 or so years ago by Prof.Nicholas Orme
(University of Exeter) might be of interest.

"Medieval children were not necessarily named after relatives; their names
   were usually given by, and identical with that of, their chief godparent"
