In France, "fils" is pronounced "fees" -- perhaps the Quebecois say it
differently. (My neighbors from Georgia and Maine certainly don't sound the
same!)

Ma fille (my daughter) ends with the sound Megan aptly describes as a "
swallowed l " As does the word " fil " which means "thread."

While we're on the subject of endearments here's a quick rundown on some
things that show up often in fan fic.

The slash below \ indicates the accent over the e and the ^ the accent
over the a in ame.

A man would be addressed as:
mon fils (my son)
mon cher (my dear...) mon cher Nicholas, mon cher fils, mon cher ami, mon
cher fre\re (brother)
Che\ri (My dear--Pet form)
mon petit (little one)
mon ami (my friend)
mon enfant (my child)
mon amour (my love)
mon a^me (my soul a^me is always feminine, but mon is used instead of ma
because of the "a" Nick would speak of his eternal soul as "mon a^me
eternelle." )
mon prote/ge/ (my protege, under my protection)

A woman would be addressed as
ma fille (my daughter)
ma che\re ... ma che\re fille, ma che\re soeur (sister)
Che\rie
ma petite
mon amie (That vowel again--amie is feminine. So, "mon amie" but "ma
petite amie")
mon enfant
mon amour
mon a^me (as above)
ma prote/ge/e

Hmm...as far as I remember, pronunciation in Canada often differs somewhat from
that of France. At least that in and around Paris which is what I learned. And
generally, the "s" is silent at the end of a word. But there are exceptions,
and this is one.

"Mon Fils" from what I recall should be pronounced "mon fees".

Just to be sure, I looked it up.

Subject: Re: Mon Fils - "feese" versus "fee"

Although I took 10 years of French courses during elementary, high school,
and university, it has been over 10 years since I have spoken much French.
That said, I do recall that it is pronounced "feese", rather than "fee".

However, French courses in English-speaking Canada (at least in Ontario,
anyway, by which I mean the province of Ontario, not the city of Ontario,
San Bernardino County, California, USA :-) ) teach "La Langue Francaise
Parisienne", meaning that although we have Quebec right across the Rideau,
we still teach Parisian French. I guess that school boards don't think well
of Quebecois French. :-(

So....it is possible that Quebecois pronounce it "fee", so Megan as a former
Quebec resident is probably as correct in saying that it is pronounced
"fee", as the others have been in saying that it is pronounced "feese".

If it was the following episode, yes, it was. This is from the
us.imbd.com web site under "Notable Guest TV Appearances."

Gee, in October that subject will be more common....

Anyway... I was watching a preview for "Underworld" (about the
eternal battle between vampires and warewolves) and one of the lines
was something to the affect of "you should die" to the female lead
vampire and she says "Not before you do." That is almost the exact
words Lacroix says to Nick in Dark Knight part 2!
Also, one of the character's name is Lucian. Yes it's spelled
differently and he is a warewolf and not a vampire, but hey....

I had a French Canadian as my french teacher for one of the years I
took french. Fils is definitely pronounced fis. Most of the time the
French drop the s at the end of the word but every so often they
pronounce it just to make life difficult.

But watch out for fille. In certain situations it can mean a woman of
loose morals as my dictionary so tactfully puts it and one French teacher
sarcastically pointed out.

Actually, his hair has been that length for some time - it was a little
longer about 2 years ago but the length you saw it in Dead Like Me is how
it looks now. I loved the ep - thought he did beautifully in it.

It should rebroadcast tomorrow nite (Tuesday). If you didn't catch it
you should.

I heard that CD had two shirts to pick from, and she picked the one she liked
better.

I believe one says Facsim is not Racism.

I thought one said Virginia on it. I used it in one of my fics, where I had
Nat going to school in Virginia for forensics as there are no forensic
pathology programs in Canada (or was it Toronto?). I had her rooming with
Scully (from the X-Files).

The one under her heart jacket doesn't fit with either slogan mentioned
already. It does fit nicely with Virginia.

I missed it when she stopped wearing her casual clothes at Nick's. And him
not dressing in the jeans and more casual stuff of first season.

As for which Richard, I think it was a staff member. I think whoever wrote
the ep didn't know the brother's name was Richard.

I don't know either but I'm just wondering something else. I don't recall
anyone' noticing this when the show was in first run. It's possible that the line
was cut in CBS Crimetime. Are we sure she said "Richard?"

Here's what else I recall CD saying in that interview from Knightly News. The
wardrobe woman brought her a couple of shirts which one of the producers had
sent for her to wear. One was the Racism one. The other had a slogan about mean --
not further specified -- which was so ambiguous that CD couldn't figure out
whether it was for or against it. I don't know whether she picked the Racism shirt
or wardrobe did. I do know Ger commented that he hadn't remembered what it said
and had used freeze-frame to figure it out.

As for the university shirt, I remember it as the University of Alberta, which
has a medical school. I didn't have much of a freeze-frame on the old vcr and
haven't replayed the episodes in some time. I'm pretty sure someone would have
disagreed when the show was in first-run if they'd thought the shirt said
something else, especially UVA. I like the idea of her having roomed with Scully.
Maybe it was a slightly alternate universe? :)

Of course, it's not necessary to be an alum to wear a university's shirt. I
know someone who collects them and wears them to work. She's probably got the only
University of South Carolina shirt at the University of Toronto, and I'm sure
she has the only Midlands Technical College (Columbia, S.C.) shirt. Anyone out
there think there are any reasons pro or con Nat's being an Alberta alumna? It
could be her undergrad alma mater if she went to medical school elsewhere.

I see I attributed a slogan about mean to one of the Nat t-shirts. That should
be meat.
