I think someone said nick was born about 1190
that would make him 38 (1228 - 1190)

LC was probally late 40s/ early 50s

I don't know if I'll start anything or not but I'll
post my movie comments.

It was pretty good in its own right, and worth the 90
minutes, but I'm sure glad they made the changes when
it went to FK. I know it's not FK and there was more
time for character development in the series, though.

The only casting I really can say I didn't like was
LC. NB is just *so* much better in the part. He looks
the part more too, I think....he's more physically
imposing and has that distinctive deep, creepy, yet
slightly seductive voice. And he's got the talent to
go with it.

Did CBS cut some scenes in the pilot? It seems logical
that the scenes like Schanke giving blood and
'creaming' the hydrant in the Caddy (which, btw is
much better as a '62 than a '59) should've been in
there but weren't.

The sunbed stuff...that's what was moved to Killer
Instinct (not to mention to the loft), right?

The male cororner was okay, but the lady coroner/love
interest twist was was a really good change in FK.

Someone said they liked the theatre loft better, but I
think I like the warehouse one because it's so much
more dark and forboding...perfect place for Nick.

The only thing I really missed in the movie, besides
the actors we know and love so well, was the
flashbacks...I always liked how they linked the main
plot with something from Nick's background.

I also agree with whoever said it was better having
Elyse become a vamp at the end....and whoever said the
FK camerawork for the 'flying' scenes was better...or
maybe it was just the higher horizon.

But, the film was a worthy first effort and it seems
all they needed to make it even better was a little
bit of time to flesh out the story.

Mel,who saw the movie *after* seeing FK, which was why
I couldn't get used to the different actors in it.

Over the years people seem to have settled on an age of 33 to 35 for
Nick, and mid-40s for Lacroix. Poor Janette has been neglected in the
age discussion, but I'd say early 30s.

I think it just made much more sense to cast someone who was *visibly*
older than Nick as LC. Michael Nader did have a sort of menace in the
role, it's just that having seen NB in the part, you *know* what you're
missing. (And 60+ episodes of character development doesn't hurt,
either.) Given a chance, someone else might have also made the role his
(or her!) own in an equally memorable way.

I suspect that was just a natural consequence of having another crack at
editing and improving the script; what writer can resist the opportunity
to fiddle with their work?

> Someone said they liked the theatre loft better
I like both versions of the loft, but that bank of TVs in NK gave me the
willies; I expected them to fall over at any time. And they gave the
distinct impression of someone *without* a lot of money, but with very
unusual tastes/needs. Effective set design, yes?

> I also agree with whoever said the FK camerawork for the 'flying'

The camera was much more stable in NK--flying shots in FK have a lot
more yaw (side-to-side "wagging") in them.

> But, the film was a worthy first effort
Absolutely! I found it fascinating to compare NK to DK because you can
really see the areas which were tweaked to make it into the series we
all love.

I agree as well, NB made a much more menacing Lacroix than did Michael Nader,
especially since over the series they chose to emphasize the "father" portion
of the "father, brother, lover" aspect of the relationship (although the UF
covers the other aspects pretty thoroughly <g>).

The NK Alyce was much better (she was much less needy, and had a natural charm
and eccentricity suitable to someone who actually liked working in a spooky
museum late at night). I believed her, while I never took "Hold Me" Alyce very
seriously.

And then there's the NK Janette, a total disaster, and about as French and
alluring as my Polish grandmother. I could only wonder who that actress was
related to--no other reason I could think of to cast her in the part. <g>

> The camera was much more stable in NK--flying shots in FK have a lot
> more yaw (side-to-side "wagging") in them.

I believe the flying scenes in FK were accomplished by mounting a camera on a
remote-controlled ultralight and flying it through downtown---lots of
crosscurrents and updrafts there, hence the instability of the shots.

The first thing I thought when I watched NK was that their flying scenes,
particularly in the opening shots, were much better. You got a sense of being
higher, and looking straight down on the buildings below. That seemed much more
in keeping with a vampire's POV. In FK, it seemed that the vamps were always
slightly drunk or simply couldn't fly very straight. I was always afraid they'd
hit some power lines or phone wires. <g>

All in all, NK was a worthy first pass at the story, and yes, it's fun to see
the difference a new cast and new location can make to the same basic story.

I think Michael Nadar did pretty well. Mr. Bennet definitely
hit on something when he decided to speak very softly and
almost "understated". The voice of LaCroix is a powerful
part of the character. The only actor I can think of who could
perhaps step into that roll is Michael Wilcott.

> Did CBS cut some scenes in the pilot?and
> 'creaming' the hydrant in the Caddy (
I'll bet the whole "crash of the Caddy" was altered
for money reasons. If you watch that scene in Nick Knight and
start totaling up destroyed automobiles and stunt-drivers, you add
up to quite a bit. I wouldn't be surprised to see that that scene
was omitted as it really didn't add much to the story to actually see
the crash itself and it cost quite a bit to film.
> The male cororner was okay, but the lady coroner/love
> interest twist was was a really good change in FK.
Yes. An ongoing show needs a deeper female representation around
Nick. Recasting the coroner as a woman was a good long-term choice.
> Someone said they liked the theatre loft better, but I
> think I like the warehouse one because it's so much
> more dark and forboding...perfect place for Nick.
I'm probably the one who said I liked the theater.
I thought the sign on the marque (ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE) as a nice
touch for someone who lives forever. And the bank of televisions all
adjusted to watch the sun-rise was a nice piece of symbolism.
Given what we know about Nicholas's artistic interests - from the FK
series - a theater also seems a better "fit".
Also, what is Nicholas constantly doing? On the stage of a normal
human life pretending that he isn't a vampire..... A theater
seems like a good "fit".
> I also agree with whoever said it was better having
> Elyse become a vamp at the end....
I would like having Alyce as a vampire better if they had ever done
anything further with the character. As it is, she is somewhat of a
"loose end".

Well, if faced with a guy as attractive as Nick in a darkened, deserted museum,
I might *think* "Hold me!" but basic social training restrains me from actually
leaping into the guy's arms. <g>

Perhaps Alyce has been working alone at night waaaaaay too long, or, being a
geek, hasn't absorbed those little interpersonal lessons. Poor girl, she needs
to get out a lot more.

Maybe Lacroix did her a favor by bringing her across. Now she'll be able to
whammy guys into snuggling her whenever she wants it, not to mention the Vamp
Makeover (tm)--the instant irresistability/exotic fashion sense new vamps
inherit along with their pointy teeth. <g.

Coat of Arms: a blue shield with a gold cross.

Under history it said

"ancient" huh?
So maybe LC took this name because he knew the family.

I wonder if it was creative editing due to budget limits or lack of classic
caddy parts. I've noticed that whenever something untoward is going to
happen to an automobile, Nick is driving something other than the Caddy.
So, I would think it was less expensive to imply the hydrant scene rather
than actually perform it.

I think Michel Nader was pretty darn good in his own right; he just held out a
different interpretation of the charecter. While Bennett played LC as smooth,
polished, and menacing, Nader's portrayal was a lot more... the word that comes
to mind is 'vibrant'. Bennett's LaCroix was (in the first two seasons, at
least) a very cold, calculating cruel. Nader was a much more straight-forward
meanie, but just as creative in his own way. I think if they had kept Nader for
the series, we would have come out with a very different picture of LaCroix, but
I can't say as it would have been any less facinating than the one we have.

I'm not against UFer's in general-- I've been to their website and read their
reasoning, and they have some good points, though they do miss a few logical
connections. But if that kind of relationship was ever even considered by the
makers of the show, it was NEVER presented in an obvious fashion.

Of course not. Because at the time, having two people of the same sex show
affection beyond friendship would have been a BIG taboo. Advertisers would have
pulled their sponsorship, many places would not have shown the show in
syndication, and there'd been verbal gay bashing all around. The program really
hasn't been off the air all that long in the grand scheme of things, but "we've
come a long way." Even today, things sometimes hit the fan if you dare to show
anything other than heterosexual love (thank you Will & Grace and Buffy the
Vampire Slayer!).

I'm not saying it is there, I'm saying just because it is NOT there does not
mean it couldn't be so. I'm just saying even if the thought entered TPTB's
minds, they probably would not have done it at that point in history.

I know Nick never said that. I was paraphrasing Divia's comment to LC when she
tried to seduce him. She wanted the whole enchilada, and her comments indicated
she thought that they, as vampires, were beyond mere mortal taboos (in this
case, the incest taboo).

However, the actors themselves have indicated they played some scenes in such a
way as to implicate that Nick and LC had a more intimate relationship, but it
was very subtle and they only went so far. As Libs pointed out, such things
were show-killers at the time they were filming FK.

Believe me, UFfers are not all of the same mind about this. in general, I think
it's safe to say that we think is that the relationship between Nick and LC was
extremely complicated, and that it could very well have included an intimate
one. My own thoughts on the matter is that it did, although in my little FK
universe Nick is unwilling and is coerced by LC, just as he is coerced or
manipulated in so many other ways. Nick's problem then is that he becomes
totally seduced and then hates himself (and LC) in the morning. <g> We're
talking major angst and family issues here! But that's all a matter for the UF
fiction list, isn't it?

True, it wasn't obvious. But we UFfers are more than willing to point out all
the tiny visual klews! <g>

I got the Tracker DVD in the mail Yesetrday. I watched it immediately. They
took several episdoes and combined them. Its really good to see Ger more of a
presence in the movie. The way he shuld ahve been in the series. The ending left
me going ...WHAT!!! I looked down and it was over... I had assumed it would end
where the series did. Does any one know if they will make another one?

all you really have to do is see some of the outtakes from the show to see
where the actors heads were at ... (thinking of an alley, David Constantine,
and GWD on his knees at his waist... hehe) All in fun of course.

There was one scene in the hospital with Zin all dressed in Black and shot
from the floor up. It made me think of LaCroix, in a pure evil mode.
