I think in this instance Nick is acting as any resistance fighter would---you
must kill traitors and collaborators. Although of course his method was
distinctly non-traditional <g>. The woman, if she was collaborating with the
Nazis, threatened the resistance efforts. We could argue that the evidence of
her being a traitor was very slim, and Nick should have questioned her to find
out why she was fooling around with the German officer. But that's our Nick,
always acting on emotion and saving the thinking for later.

Yes, it does. "Outside the Lines" boasts some smashingly positive
Tracy content in the present day, but its flashback is my least-favorite FK
moment.
"Outside the Lines" was originally written as a first-season script,
but was rejected. I think the rejection was wise, and completely in
keeping with the themes and priorities of first season. OtLines violates
first-season's construction of Nick's epiphany and conversion to
humanity/not-killing. By third season, of course, those themes and
priorities had shifted, opening the crack into which a rushed and
script-strapped show, just coming off the trauma of replacing three major
characters/actors, inserted OtLines.
<<times of war, is there suppose to be a different standard
established for traitors vs. the guilty in this instance?>>
Within Nick's code as stated in "Love You to Death," after his
epiphany that "we are the guilty; they are the innocent" and that vengeance
is not his to take? No. There is no leeway for him there. In the
flashback of "Outside the Lines," Nick egregiously violates his moral code
in the worst instance of backsliding in the entire series.
OtLines is not actually the only instance in which Nick kills a human
after coming to his epiphany, but it is the only one that is not accidental
(FM, NiQ) or in immediate defense of self and others (1966), and it is the
only one in which he irrefutably kills as a vampire, which may be quite
important to him. (In DK, depressed about catching a criminal with his
vampiric powers, Nick asks rhetorically, "Who cares how I did it?" and
Natalie answers, "You do!")
In "Cherry Blossoms," it's Janette who says that Nick has not killed
"in a hundred years." To reconcile third season with first, I interpret
that what happened in OtLines was such a shame to Nick that he kept it from
Janette.

Okay, so it wasn't canon, but it does point out the original intent of the
series. :-) Besides, the Romeo-and-Juliet scenario doesn't exclude
NNPackers---just read Mary Combs' Heaven series. Lovely, romantic stories!

Just wanted to thank everyone who wrote and asked me not to leave. I
know it may not have seemed like it, but I did read all your notes, and
more than a few of you had me in tears. In a good way, of course. :-)
I feel like I should explain what happened. For the past couple of years
or so, I've been on weekly doses of methotrexate, a type of
chemotherapy, (And to answer the inevitable next question, I don't have
cancer, I have vasculitis, which is basically the medium to large
arteries just up and die for some reason, effectively killing the area
it's chosen to affect. Nasty stuff.) and so far, it's never hit me the
same way twice in a row. Most of the time I either get extreme
dizzyness, extreme blah (can't explain it better than that) or extreme
hunger. Sometimes all I feel is really tired, and a few times I have to
check for the needle mark to be sure I've taken it. This time, it seems,
it hit me with extreme depression and emotional instability.
And then the Janette/Nat debate really got going.....
{pause} So does this mean that the 'trex briefly turned me into Nick? <G>

But, in fact, I'm pretty sure that neither Janette (who's already kicked Nick
out of bed, so to speak, back in the Renaissance) nor Lacroix (who enjoys the
permanent state of tense, even hostile, engagement between himself and Nick)
would want a "tame" or permanently docile relationship with Nick.
And I wonder whether a permanent, mortal lifetime with Nick is what Nat
actually had in mind, although it could be argued either way. I think much of
the strength of her character comes from the fact that she's not just trying
to cure Nick to snare a husband. If that were her main motivation, she'd be a
far less interesting character, and her worth as a person and a doctor would
be lessened, in my eyes, at least <shrug>.
Although I'll risk annoying Libby <waving> and suggest that it woulda been
interesting to see Nat and Lacroix seek a meaningful dialogue to try and see
if they could resolve their differences <weg>.

I agree that the triangles were destroyed, which was a bad thing, but the
angel/devil on the shoulders thing and the conflict was still very much
there. Look at "Games Vampires Play" and "Night in Question". In NiQ, I
can just about literally see the angel and devil on Nick's shoulders.

I don't see it as a flaw in the show. All of us are inconsistent at
times. To me, FK is about someone discovering his values and learning what
it means to live by them. "Discovering" is the relatively easy
part. Living by them is the harder part. How many of us espouse values
but sometimes have difficulty living up to the very values we espouse?

everyone who participated, helping us to push our feelings about Forever
Knight toward TPTB. I'll get confirmation posts out to each winning

address, and if you're paying by PayPal or check.
Don't forget that we need an additional check/ money order of $3.50 for
the postage. Those should be made out to Susan Field. I'll send you her

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but
if I am treading on old ground, forgive me.
I'm more of a lurker, than a poster.
I'd like to make an observation about
Curiouser and Curiouser and was it a
boy or girl baby.
As you all know, when Nick
comes back to the loft and finds
Janette there, he makes some noise.
She come out of the upstairs room,
comes down the stairs and says to Nick,
(not a direct quote, bad memory or old age)
"Be Quite! I just got him down!"
Or something like that.
So, the baby must have been male.
Any thoughts?
