I was doing a search for Pre-Raphaelite paintings and I
came across a painting by Frederick, Lord Leighton
that seemed to me what Divia would have looked like
if she hadn't been so, well, Divia.

I seem to remember reading that his blond hair was one of the reasons that
he had that very sexy beard stubble during season 1. The producers wanted
him to look a little menacing since the blond hair and blue eyes were so
unusual for a vampire.

Is his hair really darker or does it just look that way in this particular
photo? A trick of the light?

As for whether the character of Nick would have played as well if GWD had
had darker hair... I think a good actor (and GWD certainly qualifies as such)
would be able to convey Nick's character well even without hair. But
since FK delighted in working against stereotypes (Cohen's last name
would be another good example), it was probably best that Nick look
as little like Bela Lugosi as possible.

Believe it or not, we have Natsuko Ohara to thank for the fact that the
Captain's last name was Cohen! She said at a con that when she got the
script, there was a note saying that references to the Captain should have
"Cohen" changed to a Japanse surname. (She didn't give the name.) She asked
to keep it Cohen.

This is yet another reason why I think so much more could have been done
with the character and her background that we got, especially if they'd
taken her input.

As for the blonde hair, the Canadian first year publicity described Nick as
"ruggedly handsome." I suppose they worried that he was too unstereotypical.
My reaction? Come on, guys, no matter how unshaven he is, Gerain Wyn Davies'
Nick is _not_ going to be merely "ruggedly" handsome unless you do some
serious makeup for the effect. He just looks like a handsome guy in serious
need of a new razor. <g>

McLisa, who didn't like the scruffy look on Nick or any other man she's ever
seen
McLisa (Lisa McDavid)
"That will be trouble".
