I have a really stupid question: What the H- E- double hockey sticks *is*
souvlaki??
My boyfriend asked me (he likes Schanke!) and I asked KC... no one seems
to know. Is it something they just made up?

Nope, definitely not made up. It's actually very good! "Souvlaki" is Greek
for "meat-on-a-stick" (or so I'm told). Chunks of chicken, beef, or pork (I
like the chicken variety the best) on a skewer, seasoned with olive oil,
lemon juice, and various herbs and spices. Yum! A friend of mine was staying
with me this summer (her favourite character is Schanke) and one night we
made some souvlaki and watched all her favourite episodes. :)

(All right, we didn't make the souvlaki ourselves--we just nuked it. My mum
made it. It was still good though. ;))

It's a Greek dish. Usually made with lamb, but can be beef...has
veggies and a wonderful sauce all on a piece of thin, round bread
(almost like a pita). It can also be served as a shish-ke-bob nestled
in the bread with sauce. At least that's how the Greeks do it at the
Greek church where I work. If you want a recipe, I can "borrow" a
copy of the cookbook the ladies of the church sells and send you a
recipe or two!

Schanke's favorite food is real.  It is Greek in origin.  It's marinated
lamb, beef or chicken (although originally it was just lamb) that is then
grilled and served in a pita bread with tzatziki (cucumber & yogurt salad).

I read something close: The Curse. All the female vampires got hit with the
"curse" at the same time. I found it utterly hysterical. I'm reading my way
through the FTP site from the bottom up so I can't remember who wrote it.
Sorry. I would bet there remains more room for exploration and stories
though.

WHO'S ON WHICH MOUNTAIN?

The phone rang -- for what seemed like the bazillionth time that morning.
Didn't people sleep anymore? Tracy wondered as she snatched up the receiver.
"Vetter," she stated perhaps a little to tersely.

"Hey," Vachon breathed through the phone and into her ear, immediately
relaxing her.

"Oh ... um, hi," she smiled.  Nick was staring at her now, so she shifted in
her chair to prop an elbow on the desk, hiding her expression from her
partner.  "What's up?"

"Thought you might like to do something tomorrow night---"

"Oh, I can't.  I'm going skiing!" she explained.  She hadn't had three days
off in a row in far too long, so she planned to use her time wisely.

"Where are you going, maybe I can meet up with you there?" Vachon asked.

"Mountain..." but before Tracy could continue, she noticed that Nick had
shifted locations and was staring at her again.

"Oh, downhill.  Excellent.  I could grab my board and meet you there,"
Vachon suggested again.

"Yeah, sure..." Tracy turned away from Nick's prying eyes.

"So, where are you going?"

"Mountain."

"Which mountain."

"No, not Witch Mountain, just Mountain."

"Just Mountain?  Where is Just Mountain?"

"Not Just Mountain; just Mountain."

"I said that."

"No, you didn't."

"Yes, I did.  'Just Mountain.'  I said 'Just Mountain'"

"But it's not called Just Mountain.  It's just called Mountain."

"Cold mountain?  I'm sure Canada has quite a few of those, especially in the
winter -- sort of makes the skiing possible, so I'm told."

"Vachon!"

"Tracy!"

"I don't have time for these games---"

"Fine.  Can you at least tell me the name of the ski resort?"

"Gno."

"No?  Well, I can take a hint.  You obviously don't want me to meet you
there," he finally said before hanging up the phone.

Tracy re-cradled the receiver, then sighed heavily into her hands.

"Was that about work?" Nick asked, still staring at her.  Tracy shook her
head.  "Good," Nick continued, smiling.  "I wouldn't want anything to keep
you from your big ski weekend.  Where did you say you were going?"

Subject: Schanke and Souvlaki

IIRC, the souvlaki thing started with an ad lib by John Kapelos, who of course
is Greek, and was picked up on by the writers.

Since Schanke is, according to his "confession" in For I Have Sinned, half
Italian and half Polish, it would make an interesing bit of fanfic to know how
he got so hooked on a Greek food.

Yes, yes, I know Toronto has a very large range of nationalities and ethnic
foods. I love the city. But I wonder if maybe when Schanke was a boy he had a
Greek best friend or something like that.
