Subject: WTC- I am one of the lucky ones

Hi

Well, I just want to say thank God my husband who was one of the first on
the scene in a rescue capacity was not hurt. He lost a boss and many
coworkers so I can feel the pain.

For one hour when the building collapsed I had not heard from him. I think
that was the longest hour of my life.

My husband works for the Port Authority (police lieutenant) and my wishes and
my prayers go out to the 34 missing PA Cops still in the building.

i just want to thank everyone that has shown their support. I may have
lived in Chicago for 10 years, but I've always been and will remain a New
Yorker at heart. i return there at least twice a year to visit family.
and though that may be in a suburb (some work closer and are safe), the
skyline and city was never far away. now it's been altered forever.
thanks to mcLisa for keeping the discussion in check. it's hard enough to
hear the stories of those more closely involved, political discussions at
this point do nothing for any of us, especially those with loved ones in
the area.
i don't begrudge anyone their strong opinions, but this list has always
been a positive place in times of stress, and i am appreciating that again.
once again you are all proving your strength and kindness. after reading
today's digest i feel like I've gotten a big group hug and i really needed
that.

you are all one of a kind,

Subject: Re: Thank God for Little Miracles (Kind of Long)

This is a reply for the 'Knights of the Cross' list, but I wanted to
share with my forkni-l family, as well.
Indeed, I do thank God for the 'Little Miracles'. All day yesterday and
today, I've received emails from people that knew someone that should
have been at work in one of these places, but wasn't. Or how someone that
worked at the WTC or the Pentagon got out okay.
Brandi said that it was 'God At Work' and I firmly believe that.
My own children watched with me yesterday morning, as both towers
collapsed. My youngest had no real idea of what was going on, but my
middle daughter sat, as shocked and heartbroken as I. My teenager was
already at school and this is her account:
"I got to school and people were saying things like 'Oh my God! Did you
hear that some terrorists flew planes into the World Trade Center and
into the Pentagon?' My response was 'What are they?' When I got to my
first period class, kids were being called to the office by the dozens.
Parents had hurried to the school and were pulling their students out for
the day. I still didn't understand exactly what was going on, until my
English teacher decided to explain what we were seeing on the television.
"She told us what the WTC was and the Pentagon. We watched the horrible
stuff happen all day on the news... every teacher had it on. In my
fourth period class, they showed Times Square; all the people crowded
into it and how there was no traffic. Then they brought the camera up and
showed where the WTC had been. That's when I freaked. I grabbed Marion's
arm and started shaking and crying. 'Ohmygod, ohmygod!' I kept saying it
over and over. When the teacher finally asked what was wrong, I told him,
'We were there three weeks ago! I recognize those buildings, now!'"
She looked somberly at me and said, "Mom, I could have *been* there. I
*was* there... three weeks ago."
The same thoughts had run through my head that day and as I pulled her
close to give her a comforting hug, I whispered, "There, but for the
Grace of God, go I..."
My heartfelt prayers are with everyone that knows someone that should
have been there, but wasn't, or those who are still waiting for news.
God is listening, of that I'm sure.
 Love to all,

KC Smith

Subject: Lights in the Darkness

As you can imagine, today's Washington Post is filled with compelling
coverage of the devastation in New York City and the losses here in the D.C.
area, at the Pentagon and among the families, friends and colleagues of the
passengers on the airplane hijacked from Dulles.

One article, by Jackie Trescott and Sarah Kauffman, is headlined "Cultural
Activities Pause After Tragedy."
The lead is: "America's cultural life came to a standstill yesterday."
But it's the conclusion I want to draw attention to, particularly the
attention of all writers of FK fic and poetry:
"...Washington arts institutions have little historical precedent to guide
them in their decisions of when and how to get back to work. But one
Midwestern cultural organization is in a unique position to offer some
advice.
When the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed in
1995, Ballet Oklahoma was in rehearsals nearby. Those rehearsals continued.
"We had a show scheduled two days later for 12,000 children," said Bryan
Pitts, artistic director. "There was something therapeutic in us going
through our daily routine and rehearsing."
Artists, he continued, have a special responsibility in times of tragedy:
"Yes, things happen and they're horrible, but life goes on, and what we do
in a sense transcends all those evil things that happen. We touch people's
lives in a different way, and we need to carry on with what we do, because
we need to be there for them later."
(End quote from Washington Post)
My own muse has been silent, but if yours has been speaking to you, don't
hesitate to share it with us.
If you have been posting a story and have wondered if it is inappropriate to
continue posting at this time, please do consider carrying on.

For those interested, it's Nichole Knight's vignette of the tragedy, but
with an FK twist! I'd really recommend it, it's wonderful :)

A local station here in Raleigh, NC did a tribute to NY with the following
song as background. It profoundly touched my heart. Things change, but we
CAN make good come out of this -- and in that way, the terrorist will NEVER
win.

In loving memory, and deep appreciate for the courage and perseverance of
the New York citizens, and their brave and dedicated Police, Rescue and
Firefighting forces.

Portia

New York Minute by Don Henley

Harry got up
Dressed all in black
Went down to the station
And he never came back
They found his clothing
Scattered somewhere down the track
And he won't be down on Wall Street
in the morning

He had a home
The love of a girl
But men get lost sometimes
As years unfurl
One day he crossed some line
And he was too much in this world
But I guess it doesn't matter anymore

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get pretty strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute

Lying here in the darkness
I hear the sirens wail
Somebody going to emergency
Somebody's going to jail
If you find somebody to love in this world
You better hang on tooth and nail
The wolf is always at the door

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
Things can get a little strange
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute

And in these days
When darkness falls early
And people rush home
To the ones they love
You better take a fool's advice
And take care of your own
One day they're here;
Next day they're gone

I pulled my coat around my shoulders
And took a walk down through the park
The leaves were falling around me
The groaning city in the gathering dark
On some solitary rock
A desperate lover left his mark,
"Baby, I've changed. Please come back."

What the head makes cloudy
The heart makes very clear
The days were so much brighter
In the time when she was here
But I know there's somebody somewhere
Make these dark clouds disappear
Until that day, I have to believe
I believe, I believe

In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute
You can get out of the rain
In a New York minute
Everything can change
In a New York minute

Sue, I'm so happy to hear your good news. I also have some. I found out today
(was finally able to get a call through to Brooklyn, as well as a couple to
Staten Island) that:
1 - my cousin's husband whose a police officer in Staten Island wasn't sent
into Manhattan until today
2 - friends (a married couple that my hubby and I know for years) who also
live in S.I. have been very lucky. Her mother made it out of one of the Towers
physically okay yesterday. And he is a firefighter in Brooklyn, but wasn't
called into Manhattan until last night.
3 - another friend's husband works at The Empire State Bldg. He said one
of the planes missed the building by about 10 feet or so. They were shaken,
evacuated and he was able to get home to Brooklyn by about 4:30 pm.

My heart and prayers are still with everyone.

That was a touching tribute. Beautiful song. I am thankful that most NY
listmembers have checked in ok, and so sad for those who perished in the
towers and pentagon. A friend of mine had an entire branch of his company in
one of the towers, and hasn't been able to get hold of any of them He
believes he lost many friends. They, like everyone else, are in my prayers.
I am also so proud to see the outpouring of support from the FK lists.
When I woke to the news, I realized that a nightmare had happened for real,
and it created a cold pit in my stomach that I doubt will ever go away. The
cowardly terrorists can try to hurt us, but they can never take away the
American spirit.

Mary Combs was kind enough to let me know that a post I intended for the
list went only to her. I wrote:

Brava, Mary, for bringing our attention to the therapeutic properties of
art!

I have two classes on Mondays and Wednesdays: Three-Dimensional Design and
Wood I. Boy, I sure didn't feel like going to school today, but I did, and
I'm glad. In Three-Dimensional Design, we took a few moments to talk about
the tragedy, and the discussion inevitably involved art. Some people said
they felt so trivial doing art when such things were going on, but most of
us felt that art was our means of expressing, venting, and...well, doing
something positive and beautiful in the face of ugliness.

Nations and customs, languages and rulers, may all crumble to dust, but art
endures.

So, yeah, post 'em if you got 'em, folks--your audience needs you.

Subject: memorial service in Victoria

I just wanted to let our American friends on the list know that on the west
coast of Canada yesterday at 3:00 p.m. our university held a communal
memorial service for the victims of the attacks. We had all spent the day
walking around stunned and disbelieving, and well over 1000 people,
students, staff and faculty, showed up at the service. Amazing for a service
that had only been announced three hours before. All of the chaplains got
up to say a prayer in their own traditions. The Muslim chaplain read from
the Koran, parts like "Allah will not show mercy to those who do not show
mercy", and made it clear that acts like these are not part of the Muslim
faith. I went away feeling a little cheered, reassured at least that it is
a few crazed wackos who did this, not a whole faith or people.

I hope our prayers did some good. I'm still appalled. I still can't
believe it. I hope all of you out there, down there, to the south of this
little satellite state, are doing okay. I can't give blood because I'm
still nursing, but I'll try to find some other way to help out.

Subject: Tragedy

Just checking in. Here in Cleveland, we've been asked to keep the phone
line traffic to a minimum.

I worked late Monday night, and turned on the TV just after the second tower
had been hit. The plane that crashed near Pittsburgh flew over downtown and
caused panic at our airport where we had another plane in quarantine for a
hijacking and a bomb threat at the same time. The airports and downtown
were evacuated. Most of the plants and offices in the ring suburbs were put
under lock-down because the traffic jams from downtown had the freeways
gridlocked.

I work in the lab of a major trauma hospital, and security made sure
everyone had their parking sticker and ID badges in clear view. At least
two of our residents who are with either the reserves or National Guard were
paged and ordered to go home to wait for further orders. We had TV and
radio on all shift to keep up on the latest news. It was very quiet.

When I came home Tuesday night, one of the gas stations I passed had the
audacity to charge $5.48/gal of regular unleaded. I had to look at least
twice because I couldn't believe it! Mayor White threatened to prosecute
and shut down any station owners who continued this gouging practice during
the crisis. Other stations I passed had lines stretched out blocking the
streets. It reminded me of the 1970's again.

Last night we received a CDC bulletin of a possible bio-terrorism threat.
And to use extra caution when processing specimens.

Most of our government buildings and skyscrapers are still closed here, and
my brother's reserve unit is on stand-by. He has friends who work in the
Pentagon and was stationed there himself a few years ago. Schools re-opened
this morning, and they lifted the parking ban for downtown this morning.
There are flags and patriotic banners draped from the freeway overpasses.

My prayers and sympathy go out to everyone who has been touched by this
tragedy. When I drive home at night, I have a new respect for our skyline
and for the normalcy it represents.

I know my response is late, but I've been very busy.

If I was stranded with a FK character for a year, I'd pick Natalie. She's
smart so there would be lots of good conversations, she's got the medical
skills in case of illness or injury, she's got a good sense of humor so
things wouldn't get too morose, and she's clever so there's no telling what
the two of us could accomplish. And neither of us would have to hide from the
sun during the day, which might be quite difficult on a deserted island.

Janette and I would have nothing in common. Lacroix would consider me food
too quickly and I don't want to spend a year either being slowly drained or
worrying about it happening when I slept, not to mention not liking him or
having anything in common. Screed I wouldn't be able to understand.

I'm fine and everyone I know is fine. My sister-in-law was up visiting her

blocks from the WTC and left work at some point to walk over an hour to get
home. And my sis-in-law's father was due for surgery but isn't going to be
getting it anytime soon because of the disaster. My brother was going to go
up to NYC and join his wife, but is now staying home.

My brother's best friend was sitting on the runway at JFK waiting to take
off. Another friend of his didn't go into work because he wasn't feeling
well, and the later learned he'd lost 30 friends and coworkers in the WTC
collapses.

I thought my uncle was at the Pentagon. I later learned that he's retired.
I'm glad as I had been worried. I've only met him a few times so I don't know
him very well, which is why I wasn't sure where he was.

I have some online friends who work near the WTC and live in NYC, DC, PA and
all over the place.

I'm glad to hear that so many of my friends are fine!!
