Oh, definitely! Just as long as you don't dream that LaCroix brings you
over in too fine a detail..... <VEG> Even a Cousin like me would be worried
about that one really and truly actually coming true....!

Wonder if Uncle has developed such dream powers? (Hmm... story idea?!
Sigh! So many story ideas, so little time to develop them.... Wonder how
many of my current idle story ideas could all be worked into one plot to get
them out of my sick little brain at once?)

Subject: My new website

I've decided to announce my new website before I get all the fic uploaded
because that might take forever. I tried to get all the 2000 fic up first so
that people could go there for easy reading for the awards. And for those
that are missing a story or parts of one.

It will have more than Forever Knight fiction on it. I'll keep working on
adding new stuff as often as I can.

The address is ::drumroll:: <www.1avenue.com/fkfanfic> and that is a one not
a little L in the address.

Nancy K, feel free to add it to your link page. When I get around to adding a
links page I'd like to link to yours.

Anyone else who wants to link to mine, just ask, I'll most likely say yes.
I'll probably be doing some asking myself, when I get my links page up.

Since I did the coding by hand, please let me know if you have any problems
and what you think of the pages themselves. It should work in both Netscape
and Internet Explorer. Some of the really early versions won't show the
graphics, but there's text to show you what's what.

I was wondering if there is still a separate mailing list for the
cousins. I remember that before I graduated from college I was on a
cousins list somewhere.

Is there still a war brewing in the near distance?

Any cousinly information would be much appreciated.
Please reply to me off-list.

> Loss of control denotes weakness and is unforgivable.<<

(Sorry for not responding to this earlier, but I was up to my post limit.)
This led me to ponder why control, and the loss of it, is such an issue for
LaCroix. I came up with three possible theories:

1) Going with the 'we hate the weaknesses in others that we most fear in
ourselves' view, it could be that LaCroix disdains loss of control because
he fears that loss of self-control will either cause regrettable damage
(such as actually killing Nicholas) or that it will expose a vulnerability
to others. An old friend of mine used to freak people out because when he
got into a fight (and he got into a lot of 'em) he'd be *smiling*--he said,
"Never get angry when you fight; if you do, you've already lost."

2) He subscribes strongly to the Stoic philosophy, key points of which are
that it is your reaction to events, not the events themselves, that
determine your happiness and that one fares best by reacting the same to
either joy or calamity.

3) He simply believes that the emotionalism and 'scenes' generated by a
loss of control are a waste of time, and inelegant. My mother was something
like this: when angry she would just be completely silent until she'd calmed
down. I, being a talker/arguer/shouter, would get very frustrated. Her
viewpoint was, "What's the point? We'll just wind up saying things that
will hurt each other and we'll be sorry for later."

>>The pain caused in punishment, on the other hand, if it is inflicted for
"good reason" such as to teach a lesson (or to do "the right thing" as in
Divia's case), would be immaterial so it is the intention behind the
beatings that will make the difference between acceptable or desirable and
unacceptable and despicable.<<

That would reinforce Theory #2, the Stoicism. I haven't the tapes, so I
can't sit down and analyze them for LaCroix's motivation behind each
instance of punishment or violence. However, Les GS wrote an insightful
essay that's posted on the UF page and points out that in instances of
physical violence between LaCroix and Nicholas, Nicholas was more often the
instigator. Emotional 'violence' being another story...

I believe that LaCroix loves Janette and Nicholas and that what he does to
Nick is in the interests of either teaching him or steering him away from
what LaCroix views as a self-destructive path (and, as I said before,
LaCroix was right, IMO--Nick did wind up destroying himself).

Well, once one of us hears about, that person *could* ask for permission to

Hi Molly :-)

I think you are spot on with your three part analysis and that all three
parts come together in order to create that need to control. They all
strengthen each other and they are all threatened by emotions and emotional
involvements such as with Nick and his sister.

I think something to be born in mind about LC's motivations is that he was
*a general* in the *roman* army.

Whatever his childhood upbringing and whatever else, he gave the orders to
have people burned, tortured, whole villages destroyed, and so forth. When
he worked his way up the ranks, he fought in the wars and skirmishes and did
this stuff in person and may have been on the receiving end of it, too. It
is my contention that when he sees someone complaining of say, a toothache,
or a beating for that matter, he is going to view the amount of pain
involved *measured against* that level of suffering of which I don't think
we really have much conception if any at all, and judge it to be a minor
irritation at the most.

Well yes. Dont you just hate it when mommy turns out to have been right <g>

But on the other hand and although he might have been right about his
outcomes, his means to achieve them weren't very successful. Still. The
man(ex-man) must have had the patience of a saint to put up with that
whining for 800 years. Either that or Nick was indeed the love of his life.

There is a con practically somewhere (sometimes more than one) every weekend
of the year. Most of them have nothing to do with FK, thus would be off-topic
under the rules McLisa posts.

FK *is* plugged at many of them. I did so this weekend at MidSouthCon in
Memphis just by wearing a KtK t-shirt on Sunday, and jumping in whenever FK
was mentioned (my roommates also did this as I was working for my publisher
over the weekend and had to concentrate on promoting the comic I help write)

Subject: Admin: About the con rule

Don and I are talking about the con rule. Here's why
we have it in the first place.

It was initially put in place after a specific
situation several years ago. Deb Duchene was
scheduled to appear at a New Orleans con.
Simultaneously a man in Toronto was trying to organize
an all-FK con. This failed to materialize but in the
mean time, he seemed to think he could promote his con
by spreading rumors that Deb wasn't going to be at the
one in New Orleans.

Now, it is true that guests sometimes have to cancel
scheduled con appearances. The problem was that this
cancellation wasn't true. One lister who was a friend
of the guy's kept arguing onlist and spreading the
rumor, even after denials from the New Orleans con
comm chairman and from Deb herself via her fanclub
president.

While we're at it, here's why we have the fanclub-only
announcements rule. Someone connected with the show
-- I won't be more specific -- lost a later assignment
because a rumor that a deal had been signed got onto
the net as fact. The producers of the assignment heard
about it and thought the individual had done it to
pressure them. So, they went elsewhere.

The personal life thing is simple courtesy to fellow
human beings.

Perhaps a web page? If no one else does one, I can put one together later

email when available), dates, location, and if there's someone on the list
who's going that would want to co-ordinate FK promotion, their name (with

I'm secretary for a Doctor Who club, and I get newsletters from various

There are a couple at yahoogroups and one on Topica, but none of them are
active right now. The Cousins don't seem to be terribly chatty except in
times of War. I'm a moderator at yahoogroups for fkcousins and fkcousins1,
which came about back when Onelist and Egroups merged. I've also
established fkcousinswar at yahoogroups, which will kick in when War is
imminent. (I believe we've still got a couple of months leeway on that,
don't we?)
