And that is besides the fact that fanfic actually helps PROMOTE the shows.
I started out with FK fanfic, through this list, then discovered sites like
Nancy's and the NNPacker site. So FK got me going on the net! ;-)

I started looking and found fanfic for another show I already watched.

Then a couple years later I stumbled onto fanfic for a show I never thought
I would watch, Loved the fanfic. Started following the show... Got a whole
bunch of other people onto the show, and became raving nuts for the show!

The PTB just dont understand.

Subject: copyright

Funny, my husband & I had just been discussing the pitfalls of copyright law
when this topic came up on the list. He's reading a book called _Digital
Copyright_ by Jessica Litman (Prometheus Books, 2001), which has some rather
scary stuff in it. Traditionally, copyright law in the U.S. has evolved as big
businesses and industries make up copyright laws they would like to have and
get Congress to rubber stamp them. Congress doesn't think too much about the
ramifications of the new laws or fiddle with them much, they just pass them.
As a result, the laws tend to be quite favorable to the big
businesses/industries to the point of being silly. For instance,
although once songs are broadcast publicly on the radio, you wouldn't
think that it would be illegal to play the radio publicly in your
hardware store while customers come in and out. But no, you can be
sued unless you have purchased a special license. Every year, these
cases come before the courts because the store-owners cannot
imagine they have done anything wrong, but, they always lose.

It gets sillier. On p. 22, Litman states that "current law may make
it technically illegal to watch a movie and then imagine what it
would have looked like if the studio had cast some other actor in the
leading role". This is because, and I quote her footnote on p. 32,
"17 U.S.C.SS 106 (2) gives the owner of a copyright the exclusive right
to prepare derivative works, which the statute defines broadly to include any
adaptation in any form, regardless of whether that adaptation is ever
embodied in a permanent copy or communicated to another human being.
There is no requirement that the adaptation be commercial. The
unauthorized creation of an adaption is itself an invasion of the
copyright owner's rights." So much for imagining the FK characters as
substitute cast for any movie we've seen lately. Try it, and they'll
send Lacroix out to whammy you! Oops! Imagining LC whammying anyone or
doing anything is also forbidden!

And be sure to stop your kids from playing Star Wars, Star Trek,
Harry Potter, or whatever it is that is inspiring children's
role-playing games these days!
(Oh, gosh! I thought that one up on my own, but here it is on p. 71!!!
"...your children ought not to act out _Star Wars_".)

Litman says that "individuals are routinely prohibited from doing things that
businesses have statutory exemptions for unless they first secure the
copyright owner's permission." p. 71. Record companies can create musical
arrangements for songs in the course of recording them, but if you try playing
a copyrighted piece by ear on your piano, you have broken the law. [Hmmm.
How many times have I played Nick's theme--badly--on our Baldwin??]

Current copyright law can make it possible to use technology to count computer
uses of the copyrighted work, readings of a book, viewings of a graphic image,
playings of a sound file, and copyings of any of these or times you send them
to a friend, uses of hyperlinks, etc. and charge you for them. Seems to me
that would spell the end of the expression "to surf the web". The "waves" we
catch would be dammed up (Did I say dam?) by financial charges and lawsuits.

Laverbread is made by boiling laver, a kind of seaweed, down to a pulp.
It can be seasoned with salt, pepper and lemon juice, shaped into flat
cakes, coated with oatmeal, and fried as a breakfast food - and it's
meant to be pretty good. Can't say as I've ever tried it, though.

Another British food is Black Pudding (or Blood Pudding), which is a
kind of sausage formed from pigs' blood and pig fat. I've had that, and
it *is* really good. I can just see Nat serving that up in place of her
protein shakes! Hmmm... wonder if they could eat cooked blood?

My Russian great-grandfather used to make blood pudding from pigs' blood,
lard and oatmeal. I'm not wild about it, but it's not bad. Probably Nat
never tried it because she wanted Nick to get away from consuming blood, any
kind of blood, entirely. Darn shame, because I rather think Nick must have
had blood pudding when he was mortal and it might have been easier for him
to get down.

Subject: Last Knight question

I just saw Last Knight again - it was on Showcase today (in Canada) and I
have a question about the very last scene. This is after Nick has all but
drained Natalie, and LaCroix has said he has the choice; he has to bring her
over or not, but make up his mind. Nick kneels over Natalie, and all we can
see is his back, for an appreciable length of time (a few seconds). We can't
see what he's doing, but his face is very close to her head/neck area. Then
the camera moves, and we see him stooping over her face, and kissing her
cheek. Then he gets up and says to LaCroix," I can't condemn her to this
darkness."

So my question. Given that Parriott wanted to kill Natalie off, and in the
original script, I gather, had Nick deliberately drain her a second time to
make sure it was clear that she was dead as a doornail, is that few seconds
when we can't see what Nick is doing, but he could in fact be going back for
a second bite, GWD's answer to Parriott? There's a few seconds when he
COULD be draining her, but GWD made sure that we couldn't tell? If he had
in fact been completely draining her, the line "I can't condemn her" etc.
makes perfect sense.

But if he's not draining her, what is he doing? I mean, what am I to
hypothesize that he's doing? I'd like to believe that Natalie lives, you
see. But how do I get around that few seconds? He's too close to her to be
just looking regretfully into her cold, pale face.

K

p.s. has anyone else noticed that although the paramedic says that Tracy has
a head wound, although there's blood in her hair after she slides down the
wall, there's no sign of an entry wound anywhere on her head? I mean, where
did the bullet GO?

Hello all,
As I stated perviously on the list, my husband worked for Mr. Bronfman at
Seagram's and Sons. Well, we all know Vivendi/Universal purchased the
company along with USA Networks and SFC.

Every Wednesday, Mr. Messier {CEO/Chrm.] has a major 'meeting' with his
people. MY husband has to be in the board room in case of any service
failures. I made him a 'Forever Knight' polo shirt to wear for the meetings.

He had several inquires from the staff at the meeting as to what the shirt
meant.
He is going to wear this shirt for every Wed meeting in hopes of stirring
some interest. Maybe we should send a little reminder to Mr. Jean Marie
Messier about the great show USA Networks has waiting in the wings for
revival?

Just thought the list members would like to know I'm on MR. Messier case now.

This is just so awful. I hate Juno... need new mail server...

*heavy sigh*

Anyone that may have joined the Lisa Ryder Fan Club in January and
February, could you please email me! The form results from that month
have disappeared from my folders. Argh.

I need your name, age, email address, a homepage (if you have one), and
the approximate time you originally joined. Basically the info you
filled out on the form. If it'll be easier, you could also go to the
page.
http://www.geocities.com/lisaryderfanclub
Just go to the section that says fan club and fill out the form again.

*another heavy sigh*

I'm really really sorry about all this mess. I'm working my butt off to
fix it. And keep an eye out. I'll be adding all sorts of nifty-keen pics
to the site, soon. From the NATPE con and Lisa's plays!!!

Didn't Nick eat hamburger once? Um... in the pilot, maybe - I seem to
recall him picking at a pan of *something*. And I wonder where she'd
draw the line - meat has blood in it, after all. So if she wanted to
get him away from blood entirely, he'd have to go vegetarian! "Now,
Nick, put that horrid bottle of blood down. Look, I've got this nice
big plate of broccoli for you...."

And when she slides down the wall, it looks as though the blood is
coming from her back, not her head.

Some of the copyright messages have discussed Napster or other copyright
situations without specifically referring to Forever Knight. This is
Forkni-l. The very first rule in the list I post every Sunday says that we
only discuss Forever Knight.

Please remember, if you want to talk about something that isn't related to
Forever Knight and doesn't refer to Forever Knight, you have to go to
private mail. That means don't use a reply function unless you're sure your

4. Weird Words: Droogish
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Relating to the nature or attitudes of a member of a street gang.

This derives from a member of a large set of slang terms invented
by Anthony Burgess in his book _A Clockwork Orange_ of 1962. A
droog is a young ruffian, or an accomplice or henchman of a gang-
leader. The continuing impact of Burgess's novel (and the notorious
Stanley Kubrick film made from it) is clear from the way that droog
continues to appear in English writing (and has even reached a few
dictionaries) and that droogish has been created as a derived term
that wasn't in the original vocabulary.

Droog, like much of the slang in the book, is Russian in origin, in
this case coming from 'drug', friend. Burgess called his slang
Nadsat, from the ending in Russian of the number words from 11 to
19 (so it's a close equivalent of our 'teen'). Other words from the
set that are sometimes seen are malenky, small or little, and
poogly, scared.
