I need to ask a favor of everyone. Now that Nancy has let us know how to keep
the lines in the stories from being so long you can't comfortably read the
story, please let me know if you know of a story on the ftp site that is like
that. I know of a few, but it will take me forever to look at every story
individually. I will then fix them.

Thanks,

First - hello! (as this is my first post to the list).

I think it would have made very good sense during the medieval period for LC
to deliberately target aristrocrats as 'recruits' as they had many
priviledges, and the commoners had virtually none. Staying up all night,
carrying weapons, pleasing yourself as to where and when you go would all
have been forbidden to your average peasant - who would also be required to
work a certain number of days per week/month in his master's fields, or on
road/bridge/hedgerow maintenance. Bit difficult to do when you're allergic
to sunlight... <VEG>

After all, it was the Normans after 1066 who introduced the 'curfew' (from
the French 'couvre feu' - literally, 'cover fire', meaning they had to
extinguish all sources of heat and light in peasant homes after a certain
time in the evening.) Going out after dark was fine for a knight or
lord/lady of high rank, but a peasant would be almost automatically
suspected of some sort of mischief. The fact that with a vampiric peasant
they'd be right is irrelevant! They simply wouldn't last very long.

Added to which, most cultured Europeans would speak Latin and be able to
read and write, so they could usually communicate when travelling to other
countries and could, if needs be, claim 'benefit of clergy' because they
were literate, to avoid the local lord's henchman - even if that one does
strike me as a two-edged sword for a vampire.... ;-)

As someone who spent several years living in London's East End, and who is
proud to say that my late father was a genuine Cockney, born and bred, I'd
say that 'Long Liz' for Elizabeth Stride is likely to be an example of
Cockney humour, which delights in bad puns and word-play. She was possibly
originally called something like 'Lizzie Long Stride', and the name would
later have been shortened to 'Long Liz'.

No one is upset KC. We're all just discussing our height.
I'd like a few inches more but 5 foot will do me find. It's quality not
quantity that counts.

I know, I know, I got into the heights discussion,
too, but unless we're talking about our heights in
relation to FK, this discussion has gotten offtopic.

I'd suggest another topic, but it's early morning and

Subject: How shorter can be better (was Re: Heights)

Hi Everyone:

Apologies in advance to the listparents if I'm
stepping out of bounds by including my stories in
the discussion, but here goes.....

In my FK stories, Cybelle is only 5'2", Karen is
5'3", Angie 5'3 1/2", and Dave is 5'8". (Divia
is of course--shorter than 5 foot) And, as the
General finds out, each of them is quite capable
of putting a hurt on him. (Just refer to his
encounters with Cybelle and Divia in addition to
the upcoming confrontation between him and Dave.)

By the way, a question about LC and shipboard
passage. If he is 6-3, how did he manage to
stand up straight below decks in a ship of the
Early Modern period? I've walked through ships
of that era (the ships at Old Mystic for example)
and I need to stoop to make my way through
steerage. (I'm about 5-8)

Remember folks: taller isn't always better and
the total package is better than its outer
appearance. :)

Thanks

David

never really cared about that fact)

Yes, he played Governor-General Guy Carleton, who, in 1775-1776, had to
defend Canada against the invading American revolutionaries, led by General
Benedict Arnold. At the end of the American War of Independence, Carleton
was commander-in-chief at New York, and he refused to evacuate his troops
until all the Loyalists had been sent into safety in Canada.

NB did a great job as Gov. Carleton. It was a pretty tough gig for an
actor. First off, many actors have problems with wearing historic costume,
but of course we know that Nigel most definitely is an exception! Secondly,
they filmed the actors in front of a green screen (i.e. no set or
stage--that was filled in later with special effects), talking directly to
the camera and without other actors to work with. On top of that, they used
the actual words of the historic people, which were written in a style
quite different from modern conversational English. Unlike many of the
actors who worked on _Canada: A People's History_, NB came across as being
quite comfortable with his role, despite the professional challenges.

Your humble & obedient servant,
Ligeia

Oooh, good point! And a peasant couldn't simply "disappear" as during the
feudal period serfs belonged to their master (or rather, to the land, which was
in turn owned by the master).

Yes,I remember now . That's what it was called.
I also thought NB came across perfect in that most
difficult role. Another amazing thing about him was
that he wasn't any bit LaCroix. I mean some actors
after playing a role one too many times can't really
feel themselves in any other role and end up playing
the same character in all their roles. Just goes to
show what a skilful actor NB is.
