I live in Washington state myself, about 5 hours away from Seattle. So
far as I know, the quake was about 6.5 or so, and the epicenter was about 15
miles from Tacoma. There have been no reported fatalities, a small smattering
of injuries, nothing too bad. Mostly some brickwork buildings that lost some
of their walls, and one bridge that went down. They closed SeaTac so they
could check the runways, and did the same with a few major highways. The
damage is in the billions, so thats the reason they said we were in a state of
emergency. Several thousands of people are without power. All in all, for
all the short but heavy shaking here, we got pretty lucky.
Even where I am (Richland), they evacuated some buildings due to having
several floors. The top levels shook, and homes without a concrete base
shook. My aunt's home rattled quite a bit (she's in Richland too), but I
didn't even know we'd had an earthquake till a customer told me.

Well I was sitting on the couch when the shock wave
rocked my sisters house today at 11am. The quake
hit Seattle around 10:55am and it took 5 minutes to
reach me on the other end of the state here in the
Tri-cities (Richland, Pasco, & Kennewick). I've heard
everything from 6.2 to 7 on the scale being reported
on the radio. By the looks of superficial building
damage shown on Seattle's KING 5 TV news I'd say it
was closer to 6.0 and so far I haven't heard of any
fatalities.

I'm also in the SCA, and I've seen examples of wool and linen garments made
with medieval equipment. It takes a *long* time, but it is possible to get
"machine-processed" quality material with medieval machinery. A woman I
know can get "machine" thread from wool using a drop spindle, it just takes
a long time to produce it (and took her a lot of practice to get to that
point).

The finer the material (either wool or linen), the more time it took to
create, the more labor intensive, and of course, the more expensive.

The middle ages also had the technology (at least in certian areas) to
produce fine silks, gauze thin fabrics (of linen), and complex tapestries
and brocades (on looms). [Even though Western Europe had problems with
getting silk worms, purchasing silk thread to weave into a project- brocade
for example- was not uncommon.]

Nicholas, being in France, would have better access to some of these
materials and those that produced it.

We actually have a couple of collapses, and 3 people in critical at the
moment. 10 people are missing in Olympia, following an elevator shaft
collapsing in the Old Olympia Hotel Apartments.

Which bring up even more questions (ye gods and little fishes, how I love this

of them be turned vampire by Nick's bloodsweat? Or, since Nick isn't human,
would he have any of these critters? Since dust is something like 80% human

Gee, Molly! You're turning the normally white Light Squirette an
interesting shade of green... (quothed Dark Squirette)

IMHO, Either the microorganisms would be killed off by the vampire as a
threat to its being, or would be seen as symbiotic housekeepers and kept
under close wraps--depending on what exactly the bugs were doing. Otherwise
these 'vampire bugs' would have surely drained the mortal populace dry.

Also, sweat deteriorates fabrics rather quickly. Better your sweat should
stain a relatively-easily replaceable shift of locally-grown fiber than an
ornate garment, or one whose fabric and trim might set one off a
significant proportion of one's annual salary...

I'm in Portland, Oregon as well. We definitely felt the shakes, for about
30 seconds or so. There's very little damage this far from Olympia, though
it was felt. Some of my relatives in the Seattle area called down to let us
know they were okay.

ChuChu, my parrot, thought it was a blast, hanging upside down and swinging
from the top of her cage. Luckily there wasn't a mass stampede of fearful

as well... geology, earthquakes, certain pyroclastic events in the first
century AD....

Everyone's reporting different stuff (magnitude, number injured), but
http://www.king5.com/ is a Seattle station (one we got live feed from here).
There was a death -- an elderly woman who had a heart attack. My thoughts
are with the folks whose homes are damaged and those who are injured because

Um...a very theatrical one? *crooked g* Actually, I don't have a clear
mental image of it at the moment, but I vaguely recall that being one of
the fairly rare occasion when someone's clothes didn't quite look like
they belonged where they were supposed to be.

Wait...blue? Which fback? If you put 'em all together, I swear it
seems like everyone changed clothes 2 or 3 times in one night. *giggle*
And really different clothes. I'm not making a mental connection with
the description of the outfit; if you tell me what was specifically
happening in the fback you're thinking of (the Near Death one, the
discussion of "you will live longer than in your wildest dreams", etc.),
I'll take a look at it and get back to you.

Hi everyone... I'd just like to say I'm back. I've been absent for the
last month due to the unexpected death of my father (age 78). Real life
is slowly reordering itself and adjusting. I'm truly a single person for
the first time in my life, as I had been taking care of one or both
parents for the past 8 years.

For the past 2-3 years I have been lurking and lightly active in the FK
internet fandom. It is probably one of the key factors to my ability to
deal with RL. As much as I miss my parents... God has given me a good
life, many good RL friends and several FKers that I hope to meet one day.

Now for true reality the world of FK. I cannot wait for War 11, my first.
Now I have to decide what faction... decisions decisions????!!!
<HA HA>

PS ... For those of whom I am beta reading, I should be done within the week.

McLisa here, to say that we'll work something out even
if I need to post some of the parts for Beth from my
two addresses. Thanks, Beth, for writing and posting
the episode!

I did a ping on www.fkfanfic.com and it came back with a message saying
bad ip address. That sounds bad as that usually means that the DNS
servers that keep track of the names don't have that name any more. That
usually means it is no longer in service. I am hoping it is just that it
has been down so long that when the DNS (domain name servers) refreshed
their info it wasn't in service and so is no longer in their list. When
it comes back up it may get back on track. At least that is what I am
hoping. Anyone heard from Mel lately?

I just tried and got an error message too.
But I know it was working a couple of days ago.

I'm back. Just to make everyone breathe a little better. I wanted to let
everyone know that I downloaded the entire fkfanfic site on February 3.
So we haven't lost anything.

Another thing I noted when looking at www.networksolutions.com who keeps
track of all the domain names. When I look up fkfanfic.com it says the
record expired August of 2000. If she doesn't watch out her domain name
will disappear if she doesn't renew it. I hope that isn't what happened.

Our idiot savant listserv insists that this has been
posted before when it hasn't. I hope this is enough
difference at the beginning to let it through. If not,
I plan to offer Screed all the list-hamsters he can
drink. :) -- McLisa
