Very likely Nick's marriage was going to be arranged, either by his family
or, if his father died before he got around to it, he himself would arrange
an alliance with the daughter of another suitable family, for financial &
political reasons. But that doesn't tell us anything about how he spent his
teenage years; down in the village seducing all the unmarriageable (because
the wrong class) young peasant women, would be my guess ... back then whom
you were eventually going to marry didn't need to have anything to do with
whom you slept with in the meantime, especially for a relatively well-off
young nobleman, and a good looking one at that! His culture would feel that
he had behaved honourably if he supported his bastards, and arranged to
marry off his mistresses to suitable men of their own class, with a decent
(for a peasant) dowry...

This time we have two prizes that will go to one person. The first fanzine
- "Across the Boundaries" - was donated by Lynn Stapleton and signed by
Nigel Bennett March 7, 1999, in Halifax at the Third Annual Maritime
Science Fiction Festival. The second fanzine was donated by Kathryn Kuehn
on behalf of the FODs - it's "Schanke's Culinary Delights," which includes
arresting recipes from the FODs (including John Kapelos), and enough
culinary quotes from "Forever Knight" to satisfy the hungriest fan's appetite.
Due to the unique nature of these items
EVERYONE
is eligible to enter this raffle.
Please note that ALL raffle items are accompanied by a certificate of
authenticity which tells you where the item came from, who signed it, who
witnessed the signature, and when and where the item was signed. All
signatures are original and genuine.
There is no purchase of a raffle ticket or any monetary donation required.
We do, however, ask that you write ONE letter to one of the many addresses
we have listed below, to support a Forever Knight television movie, release
of more Forever Knight soundtrack cassette tapes and CDs, and licensing and
production of more Forever Knight video tapes, novels and other tie-in books.

I suppose (not being that historically knowledgeable myself) that's
true enough but it appeared to me in the QoH flashbacks that Nick
was rather religious (a devout Medieval Catholic). While being honourable
to his culture's mores might have allowed liasons before and during
marriage to women of lower classes (peasants), STRICT adherance to
biblical principles (both then and now) would not have allowed such
behavior. And he seemed to be very attracted to the Harp player (falling
in love with her) but we do NOT see any indications that he behaved
'improperly' (as defined by strict scriptural adherance) towards her.
So I don't think that we have any basis to assume that as a teenager
he was sleeping around (despite being good-looking and of nobility).
Later after he was falsely accused of murder, shipped off to the
crusades, severly wounded there, and probably both suffering from
"post traumatic stress disorder" and made cynical by the whole mess
his behavior had obviously changed. At that point in time, Jeanette
was able to seduce him, Lacroix arrived on the scene, and Nick made
his "bad beer decision". Those events might well not have happened
if the younger (and more religious) Nick had been the one encountered
by Jeanette and Lacroix.
In a way, I think it's lucky for us that it did NOT happen that way,
the younger version of Nick, if bitten by Lacroix would probably, imo,
have chosen to go into the light instead of becoming a vamp. Of course
it might not have even come to that, because either he would have behaved
'properly' towards the lady, Jeanette, and not fallen into her bed, or
maybe he wouldn't have even met her and Lacroix because he would have
been at home (and married) back in Brabant. And any of those three
options would have left us without the FK series. <g>

We've seen several of the vamp characters speak what to them are foreign
languages (e.g. Chinese), or greatly-evolved languages (e.g. modern...
anything), with seeming fluency. Putting aside such anachronisms as the
vamps speaking modern French in 1228, have we noticed any accents or
archaicisms in their "foreign" speech that would mark them as non-natives?
If so, what have we seen, and where?

Hi Everybody,
I was wandering around the SciFi channel web site tonight and
saw that they have a section on buying advertising time on the
SciFi channel. This got me thinking. We have been placing ads
in various magazines hoping that TPTB will see them. What if
we bought a 15 second spot on the SciFi channel itself? They would
HAVE to notice that. We would also get "creativity points" because
it would be a tactic that no other fan group has ever done before. I realize
that this would be horribly expensive but if each of the fans on this list
alone donated a bit plus all the money that is raised in the KTK auctions
maybe this is doable.

I think this is a good idea, however, we'd have to have a PROFESSIONALLY
produced commercial. Unlike print advertisements, this isn't something that
can easily be done on a home computer. I see commercials that are obvoiusly
less than professional quality and all they do is turn me off the product.
There's a satellite tv commercial running locally to me that I just want to
call them and tell them how bad the commercial is! LOL!<g>
Of course someone might have access to the producers, director, equipment,
etc., and be willing to donate all time.
My point is that it isn't just buying the time, it is paying the thousands if
not tens of thousands it'd take to make a GOOD commercial.

have Windows 98 and tried it with Word, PowerPoint, and my paint program Paint

Not true. Many computers now have the same abilites as PRO equipment. It
would just take longer. I have seen "fan videos" that are as good if not
better then Professionally produced ones. All done on home computers with
the right boards.

reflections. But we see his image in mirrors in all
the subsequent episodes, so I'd say they do.
And if you thinkabout it, it would make total sense.
How could Nick possibly work among mortals if he had
to constantly avoid mirrors that gave his true nature
away?

I haven't except in a few cases where some of my friends have really spiffed
up computers with high, near professional if not professional quality
animation capabilities - but then I also haven't actually looked for any. I
guess that some very poorly done local commercials are just really getting on
my last nerve <shudder><g> I also was thinking more of a live action
commercial, but the more I thought about it after I sent that last message,
the more I think it could be done animation wise. However, it'd be up to KtK
and any fundraising capabilities. I'm not that familiar with tv rates, though
I'd suspect it be hundreds of thousands of dollars (again, I'm guessing, it
could be in the tens of thousands).
Meanwhile, I'd just love to see what LaCroix would say about a certain tv
satellite commercial running locally. It is a father son operation and
obviously shot with a less-than-top-quality home video camera. EEK! Something
tells me he would NOT be amused by it. I wonder if he'd like a snack....

I do have a friend who's done video editing
professionally. She's made a few videos for a Star
Wars list I belong to. She and her husband, being
professionals, would almost certainly have to be paid,
but if they had the time they might be willing to
help, and they do have the necessary equipment. And,
like they say, never hurts to ask.

Without reference to the D-word, there is something related
to FK in this discussion that I often see overlooked, especially
in fanfic.
Nick is a human being from a society in which honor, promises,
family (and "family" <g>), were considered to be of more
importance than individual feelings, individual fulfillment, or
individual "empowerment."
Part of the beauty of the story structure of the series is that there
is that sense of some connection that is more than merely personal,
and certainly more than transitory, between Nick and LC. No, it
isn't a "fair" relationship in today's terms: it's clearly hierarchical.
But LC, Nick, and Janette are three individuals who can change with
the times while retaining a family relationship that is very "out-of-date"
but which does allow for extended "time-outs" for their continued
mental health <eg>.
I am often taken aback by fans who rail at LC's behavior, seeing it
in purely contemporary terms. I ain't saying the old ways were better:
I'm saying that our current Western attitudes are, historically, very
new and very different from the way in which much of the rest of the
world thinks and behaves, and the way in which almost all societies
of the past have addressed the relationship between the individual and
society, and of the individual and his or her family or clan.
And it seems to me that Nick's existence as a vampire, both when
he accepts it and when he tries to escape it, is still framed within
that older worldview, and not in current ideas.

That brings up another point..we have to relize that most of the time, he has
the same mind set as when he was raised when it comes to values and such.
Back then religion was pretty much law. When you did something wrong you
repended and regretted it pretty much all your life for being weak and being
tempted by the devil. When Nick gave away his soul I bet he had some serious
"morning after" regrets. We all know he's still trying to make up for it, so
maybe thats why.

I'm not saying this is at my disposal and I'm not volunteering her, but my
friend is an animator, works at an animation studio and so on... and a lot
of what she does is on a PC. She's turned out some pretty incredible little
fun bits for friends and I that were all done on her home comp or with some
of the equipment at the studio or a college. She's done some pretty fancy
stuff that isn't necessarily live action, but rather through photos of
people or through various manipulations sort of like Exposure clips on SciFi
that turn out pretty darn cool with PC equipment.
What would the copyright laws and stuff be if we were asking for this sort
of stuff, though? Beyond the spendiness how much lawliness would be
involved?

I wouldn't even presume to play a lawyer on TV, but wouldn't it be a
different question if an ad was made using *only* fans?
Ex: footage of fans being themselves at a con, snapping up tangentially
related to FK items like scarves, belts, trousers, beer cans, and props out
of sheer desperation while asking, 'Where are the Forever Knight tapes?'
'When will Forever Knight be on Sci Fi again?' and 'He doesn't look too old
to play his character?' and so on.
Of course just buying the airtime would still be a challenge.

I think this is a fantastic idea. I would be more than willing ot help with
the commercial as well. I have very high quality recordings of FK and can
make fairly professional looking movies. One person who was a graphics
worker thought I did well with my Music Videos. I can also put this on in
VCD format.
For the vocal points, I could flash picture frames with red words on black
or something, some what like the theme.
Any way I'd be willing to help...

than willing to help with the commercial as well. I
have very high quality recordings of FK and can
make fairly professional looking movies. One person
who was a graphics worker thought I did well with my
Music Videos. I can also put this on in VCD format.>
Kristin! Thank you for responding. I was wondering
whether I should tell the folks about you or not but I
figured if you haven't replied to this, perhaps you
don't want to. Anytime they talked about professional
video making on PC, images from your "thehunger" and
"nightcallsmyname" videos came to my mind. If there is
one person who can tackle this, it is you. And I’m
perfectly willing to help with the financial part.

A couple of observations about "Nick's time:"
Nick's time as a mortal was the early 1200s, and it was very different from
the late 1200s, much less the 1300s. He was born at a time when Europe was
on the brink of dramatic development and change. Many ideas that were firmly
entrenched by the late medieval period had only begun to take root.
For example, Nick's marriage, had it ever taken place, would have consisted
of two steps: a legally binding contract between himself and his wife and
their families, followed (possibly after some considerable space of time) by
the official union and consummation. While they may have celebrated one or
both events with a Mass and a priest might have blessed them, it was not yet
the religious act that made the marriage legally valid.
It was in the 12th century that theologians and canonists (church lawyers)
decided marriage should be a sacrament, but it took time for the Church to
gain power over this aspect of civil life, and the absolute necessity of a
religious ceremony was not pronounced as law until the Council of Trent,
centuries after Nick's time as a mortal. (Another interesting feature of the
legal change was that it also changed the nature of a sexual act between a
betrothed couple. Before the Council of Trent, if a betrothed couple had sex
it simply completed their marriage in law.)
There's nothing *historically* off base in assuming that Nick and Gwyneth
did no more than kiss and cuddle. In Nick's time, chastity was an admirable
virtue in unmarried men as well as women. Of course, real life fell short of
the ideal, but the ideal was there. This had practical applications as well
as spiritual ones, in a world where privacy as we know it didn't exist. In
fact, one historian theorizes that the complex courtly love rituals and
games really served to redirect the desires of young men living toward less
dangerous expressions of intimacy.

I think the sentiment is right here - show them we have spending power: but
as jflyer also points out, buying the commercial time ought to make that
point sufficiently. Let's not send in anything that looks like a home movie
(or whining ;-) ! ).
We would want something sufficiently intriguing to get the attention of
people who've never seen FK - make them sit up and say "what the heck was
that?!" - maybe even ask SciFi , "what the heck was that and why aren't we
watching the show now?"
Once the commercial is made, we can recycle - should be a one time expense.
