You mean you don't think our vampires are magical? <innocent stare fades to
eg>

Right off the top of my head (and god knows how it got balanced there) the
Welsh harp from Queen of Harps comes to mind. It was heavily implied that
the instrument was 'calling' to him, both in the past and in the present.

Would you consider Franchesca magical? She came back to live sans original
body. Divia returned after 2000 years living in pretty cramped quarters.
I'd call that dark magic.

The Black Buddha was supposed to be cursed, I believe. (well, not *really*
<g>)
And the Mayan Jade cups.
The book of the Abbarat contained spells?

Hi Everyone:

In terms of the fanfics, if you can break it up
chapter by chapter (or part by part) and put it
on a website that works really well. (That way,
you aren't constrained by the 300 line limit
pertaining to email posts....)

If you want to see an example of this
organization, go to my story site.

Thanks

I know it's a fine line, but I have always thought of the things like the
harp, jade cups, Francesca, etc. as spiritual rather than magical.
Spirituality seems to be part of the multi-layeredness of FK.

Well of course they are, Unless you happen to think there's a purely
scientific explanation for vampirism in the FK universe.

Anyway, what I meant was any fairy-tale-type magic stuff, but other than the
harp from the episode I haven't seen (and if you want to include
religious/ritual objects in the category of magical items), I guess there's
not much provided in canon.

Thanks all!

All,
Thanks for all the enthusiasm. Whoddah thunk. Personally, I find it
annoying to try and read anything on my puter - much woud rather see the
fanfic (hint hint to Boulevard) in a paperback. (hint hint to anyone
publinshing chapbooks or small collections like the UF Pillowbook - count me
in!) I usually have to print it out.
Since I think I might not be the only one in this predicament, I am using up
Forkni-L space - at least for this post.
Steph- for the FTP site, do youse want it in plain text? I'll break up the
attachments into smaller parts per your instructions.
Also, copyrightwise, my friends have said that the flashback story (which is
pretty brutal- the worst thing Nick has ever done ) is worth a book by
itself. To quote, "Get rid of that Forever Knight crap and just do the
flashback as a book." So I am probably going to do that since Fk is a dead
market (no pun intended.) I can still recycle the flashback after posting to
FTP, correctamundo? Just checking.
Anybody have a problem with that?
Now is your chance, Steph, to give us any other caveats, helpful hints,
before posting to the everlovin' FTP.
I will never have my own website so I appreciate the work of those who helm
their own (for all our benefit) and are willing to bury themselves in my

You can send the whole thing at once to me as a text file. As far as I am
concerned I don't care how big it is. For future reference for those who decide
to post their stories on the FTP site. If you are going to do a cut and paste
into an email I would prefer 1 story per email. If you are going to send the
stories as attachments you can send more than one story per email. If you can,
send it as a text file. If you can't I can convert it. The size of the email,
as I said, does not bother me since I have a very large mail box and I have a
very fast connection. So the size of the email will really just depend on how
long you want to wait to have the email uploaded with your connection. Also,
you need to put that you give permission to have the story posted to the FTP site.

Hope this helps.

Natalie certainly seemed to believe that there was a scientific explanation
for vampires. But I do wonder if she had changed her mind by the time LK
happened. After all, she was willing to try Janette's "cure" which seemed
to have no basis in science at all.

This is one of the reasons I find LK so hard to believe. this incredibly
intelligent scientist suddenly turns to a solution of a kind that she had in
essence poo-pooed for 6 years. Why should she suddenly believe that "just
taking a little" would work when she had told him for years that drinking no
blood at all was the only way to cure him. Poor Nick. He'd put up with all
those protein shakes and now Nat is admitting that it was all a crock :-)

The FTP site is the best source of FK fanfic we have now, until RL will allow
Mel to update her site again. And I find it even easier to find and download
stories from the FTP, may be it is a special trait of my connection, I don't
know.

Stephanie, need the authors write in their disclaimers exactly that you give
permission for their stories to be archived to the FTP? I'm asking it because a
few of them allow that their fiction can be archived everywhere, so they don't
mention www.fkfanfic.com and the FTP site one by one, and I was looking for one
of these stories and didn't find it on the FTP (namely "...et Willem ad Pevensae

My understanding was that in Gillian's original story, the harp "calls" to
Nick--not sure if by music or voice--when he's in the auction house at
night, and that's what reduces him to petty theft. :-) You can see Nick
pause and cock his head like he hears it just before he breaks open the
door and makes off with it. Removing that part of the story certainly
placed Nick's theft in a different light.

Gillian's original story didn't have Nick & co. routing the pagans, either,
did it? Wasn't her version more historically accurate?

Do you know how she *did* dispose of the fellow? Presumably, he didn't make
it any farther along in age than any of his ancestors, with the harp still
intact...

When I first took over the FTP site I was pretty strict on saying it needed to
say the FTP site specifically, but lately I have relaxed that requirement. That
means earlier stories that said that they could be archived "everywhere'
"anywhere", etc. but actually didn't state "FTP" aren't on the site. I had been
going by what Lisa was saying about archiving. Lisa??

I think Natalie was a very intelligent scientist.
She was examining an unknown phenomenon (Nick + vampires).
She obviously was studying his physiology and attempting to
determine how to change it. She apparently had the wrong
techniques for some 6 years, but when presented with new
information - Janette, alive and mortal with details as to how she
had done this - Natalie was a good enough researcher to realize
that there was a way she had been discounting. With credible
proof in her hands, she adjusted her thinking to embrace what the
facts were, instead of what she wanted to preceive.
History is filled with "scientists" whose egos are so intertwined
with their job that they can never admit that they were wrong.
Natalie didn't suffer from this failing on this issue.
This is unfortunate for her, if one believes that Last Knight really
occured.
                Tim

P.S. For the record: Last Knight never happened. It was sensory-
hallucination induced by the Alien Greys in sinister conspiracy with
the major television networks. Or that is my story for today.

Subject: Nat and Janette's cure

Nat didn't notice the implications of what had
happened to Janette. Presumably she was too stressed
out to think clearly.

It is still possible that Janette's cure was
scientifically based.

1. Janette said of Robert (is that his name?), that
his blood calmed her heart. That's poetic, but it
sounds as though she meant it didn't bring out the
vampire. There might have been something unusual
about Robert's blood chemistry. It's a pity there was
no way for Nat to get a sample to test.

Oh, dear, now I have a mental image of Nick trying to
whammy R's son and sister for blood samples in case it
was in their blood, too. :)

The factor might have only reacted as it did with
Janette's body chemistry. Theoretically even if Nat
isolated the factor it might not work on Nick. Then
again, since he and Janette are part of the same
vampiric lineage, it might. Either way could be
explained with this scientific cheese.

Janette didn't become mortal until after the shock of
R's death. Maybe whatever his blood had done to affect
her vampire, only brought her back across when
combined with body chemistry changes from strong
emotions. It's hard to imagine Nat inducing that kind
of reaction from Nick in the lab.

Note that Nick's reaction to having apparently killed
Nat was extreme grief. Janette seemed to feel a
combination of rage and grief. So again, the cure
might not work on Nick even if there was a special
factor in R's blood.

How many stories tall is the SkyDome and and what's the distance across it?

I haven't been able to find the information on the Web, and when I think I've
found something, AOL decides to crash on me <grumbling at AOHell>.

Any assistance in figuring this out will be deeply appreciated.... please
respond off-list.

Many thanks! :)
