Listmommy explode at someone? Nahhhh - no way.

When I make my first (and I'm sure NOT my last) list boo boo, McLisa was very
courteous and tactful but got her point across. Nothing at all like some
other lists I am subscribed to -- make a mistake on some of those lists, and
WHAM! The enforcers would be kinder!

Subject: Laugh for the Day!

Last night a local Canadian station showed RoboCop: Resurrection, in which
Ger plays one of the main villains. It was funny to see him dressed mainly
in black, and with short, spiky, bleached white hair (shades of first season
Lacroix <g>!). Then there was one scene that had me rolling on the floor
with laughter - at one point, the character has just slapped his ex-wife
across the face. She starts bleeding, and takes the blood and throws it in
Ger's face. Ger then wipes the blood off his face with his finger, puts some
of it in his mouth, and with a glint in his eye says, "ah ha, it still tastes
so good!"

Not to question NB or LM, but Greg Kramer specifically said (and only a couple
of months ago) that he DOES get residuals from the show. Could something have
changed for 3rd Season, maybe when USA got involved? Or maybe it's different
because GK wasn't a regular player? Hmm. I'll have to ask.

Any idea if the FK cast would get $$ from the sale of tapes, or not for the same
reasons??

OMG! I went to the site out of curiosity, and looked up FK
on their schedule. When I found it I clicked on it, and it
pulled up a brief (pretty good) description and underneath
under "Related Links" it had links to Mr. Happy's site and
Dorothy Elggren's site! How cool is *that*!

I discussed this with the Listmommy off-list, and we're now wondering if
union rules weren't changed between 2nd and 3rd season as there were
discussions of the Canadian actors trying to get this changed.

(I haven't asked GK, so I'll let you ;-) -- See, he likes HER better anyway.

I don't recall seeing anyone mention this on the list, so...
Recently while poking around the books on tape at a book store I
stumbled across a volume entitled "Great American Suspense" Read by
Geraint Wyn Davies.

I says it was originally published by Tangled Web Audio under the
title "Forebodings: American Classics."

IMNSHO, he does a wonderful job reading the stories.

I hadn't thought about there being a difference between being a regular,
which of course NB was, and recurring characters, which is what GK was as
Screed. NB did say the members wanted the union to change the policy and
this was a con before the 3rd season started shooting. Maybe the change was
made between then and the beginning of shooting.

Subject: Nick's Failures As A Sire

Hi all,

<<It seems there were a number of things that LaCroix
held back from teaching Nick, I would think to keep
Nick at a disadvantage>>

I can see that, but then that would mean that in
"Father's Day", when LaCroix voiced his hurt/anger at
what he perceived as Nick's ingratitude, that in fact
he did everything a father should do in caring for his
children, protecting them, etc., he really didn't live
up to his promises. I can see how he wouldn't want to
teach Nick all his tricks, but when you deliberately
keep your children at a disadvantage, you're hurting
them. *Unless*, because when you bring someone across
you become that person's master/teacher, it's possible
that LaCroix felt Nick didn't have what it takes to
make a suitable master/father himself, possibly
because of Nick's problems with guilt, and thought
teaching Nick to bring other's across might cause more
harm than good. Okay, did any of this make sense? <g>

Hi Cindy,

<<I suppose I was thinking more of the somewhat
kinder, gentler Lacroix (yeah, right <g>) that seemed
to appear toward the end of third season.>>

I'm glad you brought that up! It's been bugging me:
just when did LaCroix get so in touch with his
sensitive side? When Divia brought him across, he was
appalled at the thought of making love with his
daughter, so much so that he beheaded her, but that
couldn't have been it because he did lots of nasty
stuff after that, and whatever conscience that was
there then was gone or at least suppressed by the time
he brought Nick across. Fleur obviously sparked
something very human in him, but I don't think that
was it either, which leaves the times LaCroix found
himself confronted by an evil greater than his own,
which would be when he was nearly killed by Jack The
Ripper, and meeting Hitler, both events which left him
uncharacteristically shook up.

Subject: Re: Tracy And Vampires

Hi all,

<<<< Tracy is not stupid because she doesn't know what we know. Tracy is not
stupid for not suspecting Nick -- she has been given every reason to believe
that he is mortal.>>

But there was one moment that should have helped Tracy
piece it together a little later on: remember in BB1,
when Nick and her were driving to the airport, she
recounted to him that she'd heard how Nick once beat a
car to the end of the block and drove the guy into a
wall. After meeting Vachon, learning something of a
vampires abilities, that story should've struck a
bell. While we're on the subject, it's a wonder the
whole department didn't have a clue about Nick: his
being allergic to sunlight was common knowledge, there
were probably lots of other juicy stories of Nick
performing superhuman feats floating around as well,
and probably the biggest clues that Nick was a bit
"unusual", would've been found in Skank's police
reports. Ever notice when Nick says "I'll go around
back", "around back" is usually five floors up? Maybe
that's why Skank was so lazy about typing them up,
Nick whammied him to delay Skank's reporting exactly
what he saw or muddied his mind just enough so that
Skank had difficulty getting his thoughts in order to
set things down exactly as he witnessed them? I'm
guessing here, but you can only watch your partner
hold someone out a window using just one arm so many
times before you start to wonder. Imagine being the
Capt., and Skank hands you his report, "...then
Detective Knight flew through the air..."

You can't really apply our modern, Western standards to this incident. Incest
between father and daughter was considered VERY bad even in his time (as it
is today). So it is possible it was even a demonstration that there is still
something "human" in him - a touch of morals he had as a mortal. It was a
totally different time in Ancient Rome than it is today, so you have to look
up the standards of behavoir, taboos, laws, etc. of LaCroix's mortal time
before passing judgment on his action concerning Divia. I've always thought
she finally pushed his last button and he realized she was a total monster as
a vampire. After all, she'd also just announced she'd killed her own master.
There's no telling what else LaCroix had witnessed her do.

Subject: Admin: AOL problem with html

The problem is AOL 6.0. The html markings are part of the mail program0 and
can't be turned off. Unfortunately, Listserv <tm> can't handle html, so
messages with enriched text/stationery/AOL6.0 show up with the text repeated
twice in the same post. The first time is plain text. The second repeats the
text with all the html tags showing.

How this looks on a particular Forkni-ler's screen depends on the
subscriber's mailer. AOL users and some others only see the text with all
the effect the html is intended to produce. Most of us see the situation I
just described.

I'm told that AOL has indicated that it doesn't care about the problem and
won't change. However, they claim you can avoid html by sending from their
web interface. I have gathered that this is not easy or impossible for some
users. Another way, if you can do it, is to go back to the last 5.whatever
version, in which html could be turned off.

If you're on AOL and are stuck with 6.0 and no way to use the web interface,
ok, I'll cut you some slack. But please put in a note at the top of your
post. It doesn't have to be long. Something like "AOL6.0, it's all I have"
will do. That way we know it's not something you can help.

Thanks,

I agree that there may have been some juicy gossip going around, but since
there was no proof vampires existed, no one took any of it seriously.
Although if you had a scenario in which someone breaks the code, and it
becomes public knowledge, Nick and others with sunlight allergies would
probably be the first "suspects" on everybody's list.

I think that in his own eyes, he did everything he thought a father should do.

The only thing we know from canon that LC kept from Nick was teaching Nick
how to shield his thoughts from him. The speculation that LC kept
knowledge about bringing people across from Nick is just speculation.

I don't think he did keep the knowledge from Nick. In "Fever", he seemed
to want Nick to bring the doctor across. I even got the feeling that they
were looking for someone for Nick to bring across, as if LC was looking for
an opportunity to teach Nick that very thing.

I think LC taught Nick to bring people across but didn't teach him
parenting skills, which is a very different thing. But then, how many
humans deliberately teach their kids parenting? I don't have children
myself, but isn't it mostly a matter of learning by example, plus deciding
that there are some things your parents did that you'd like to do differently?

So, there's Nick, with this over-controlling parent, who tries to force
values and behaviors on Nick that Nick doesn't agree with. Nick decides
not to do that, with the result that he has mostly children who end up
being completely uncontrollable.

Bring 'em back alive!

Subject: Nat's birthday

Here's where June 24th (Cancer on a Gemini cusp, but still Cancer) came
from. In Only the Lonely, a calendar can be seen in the background in shots
of the morgue. Freezeframing and other checking when the episode was new
told us that the month was either JAN or JUN. The rest of the episode,
especially the scenes of Nat and Roger in the park, made it clear that the
time had to be summer. January in Toronto would not be a likely time for
shirtsleeves and ice cream cones. :)

I think the 24 is legible by itself.

The Apr. 14th thing is a continuity glitch. Apparently nobody caught the
fact that Nat's birthday had already been established, not even people whom
we know had had access to the discussions on the list. Remember Myra's
amazing resurrecting mother? Schanke had a long speech in one episode about
dealing with her mother's death. Then, later, they had a line in which
Schanke said Myra was in Florida with her mother! I got a chance at Bridging
the Knight to ask John Kapelos about that. He said he tried to tell them
they'd established that Myra's mother was dead. TPTB insisted that nobody
would notice.

Subject: No fan club for CD

Valerie Meachum Kessler approached Catherine Disher through her agent about
a fan club. CD didn't want one.

In fact, CD was and is leary of fans. She had problems with the kind who
can't tell the character from the actor when she was in War of the Worlds,
including some who got her phone number and called her. She could never be
persuaded to do a con. For this reason her autograph is extremely rare and
the ones I know about are on things that she autographed for charity sales
where other cast members were appearing.
