Yet another topic that's raised some debate in the past!
FK doesn't really tell us, so there's room for several
theories. Your figures of .3 or .5 people per day
could easily be true.
So, how long is the longest time we've seen anyone
abstain without a drink? 12 hours or so? Days?
Divia lasted a while, but those circumstances might be
special....
The other thing is that it would be awfully difficult
if not impossible to get the full volume of blood out
of a person -- especially in the timeframe of mere
seconds that we're shown on the screen again and again.
They get what they can while the heart beats (cf.
Francesca), then they're done. To get enough to keep
the victim still alive, they may need more than one
(cf. Fallen Idol).
So sufficient volume to number of victims may not be a
one-to-one ratio. Just to complicate things. :)

On the other hand, mortality rates were pretty high
in previous centuries (and even now, in some places),
especially among children. A properly disguised kill
might well be taken for accidental or disease-related
death. Which wouldn't bring out the hunters with
torches and stakes -- at least, not right away.
They might soon decide their tuberculosis epidemic was
in fact related to those odd strangers in town, and...
well, then it's time to leave, quickly.

LOL! I love that image. :)
Although when we do get a peek inside Nick's fridge,
we often see several bottles in there. For example,
in Last Act, there are 5 (every time he opens the door,
so he must keep it restocked).
Depending on how well blood keeps - say 2-3 days, like
fresh meat? - he'd be going through more than one
bottle per day at least.
But you're right, it's cow blood, so possibly a
flawed comparison.
Someone else mentioned something about the older the
vampire, the less blood he/she needs.
Is that based on FK? I don't recall seeing that. In
fact, how often do we see LaCroix or Janette *without*
a glass in hand?

But seriously, maybe they actually need more as they age. Just something to
think about....

Oh, great!
Now I've got this image of Nick sitting in the Leaf's Stadium sipping from
those hats that hold two drinks on either side with a tube going down to his
mouth. Then there are the sport bottle fanny packs that also hold two.
Damn.
And *that* makes me think of Dilbert and his technogadget one-up-manship.
So now I've got Nick with that hat, the fanny pack, and a
construction-worker type utility belt for his All-In-One remote, caddy keys,
handcuffs, garlic pillbox, stake (in case the Enforcers or LaCroix show up),
Fang Whitener (in case *Janette* shows up), and toothbrush (because
immortality is no excuse..).
Or forget the Batman utility belt.
Figure that that duster of his was given to him by Doctor Who on his 687th
come-across day. Time & Relative Dimensions In Pockets. TARDIP? Is that a
word? Anyways, that would probably be better, otherwise the combined weight
of all that would likely render him unable to fly.
Which would probably please Natalie.
Until another serial murder tries to take her down. Then she wouldn't be
too happy.
So maybe she'd give him some of those Air Pump athletic shoes so he'd be
able to get airborne again.
I'm rambling, aren't I?

It was in A MORE PERMANENT HELL will LaCroix said the older vampires could
live a long time without feeding.
I've always wondered about the rat population of Toronto after Screed died
... uhr, took that nap<wRPg> He seemed to really suck the lil' squealers dry
constantly which would keep down the population.

There may well be a difference between the amount of blood a vampire has to
have, and the amount a vampire consumes when going by what seems like a good
idea at the time.
Case it point: I just got back from dinner out. I could live on considerably
less than I ate, but I enjoyed the whole meal.
Maybe Nick can live on a bottle or two a day, but LaCroix and Janette, not
being on a diet as it were, like to take more than that at a time.

Everytime I go there, I get overwhelmed at the thought of hunting down

one happen to get stashed in there by happenstance. Say, a cute, blonde
happenstance, maybe).

Is there anything specific you are looking for? Since it is an ftp site I
really don't know how to arrange the files in any other order unless I
duplicated what was there and put a duplicate file in a directory with the date
that the file was uploaded. I don't know of a way to index an ftp site except
through a web page and that in itself defeats the purpose of an ftp site. Some
people have access to ftp but not to the WWW. I am sure there aren't many out
there, but originally that is the reason for an ftp site and not another Web
site.

Yes!
As new stories are added the "modified date" on the author's folder is
updated.
So just click the "modified" button and it will line up the dates from
oldest to most recently modified. If you click the button a second time
it will list the author's folders most recently modified to oldest.

In Fallen Idol and the ep where Nick finally kills Amalia, there's an
implication that he's had "liaisons" with at least two women that lasted
several nights. We don't *know* if he was supplementing his diet, but if he
wasn't it would seem to prove that Nick didn't need a full person each
night.

In Blackwing, Nat mentions that Nick had 3 pints (or was it units?) of
plasma this morning-- for breakfast. If it was pints, then that would be
1.5 quarts, or just under .33 of a human. Interesting how that dovetails
with your other observation about one person being enough for the three of
them... It also would be equivalent to one person every three
days--remember Nick's 3-woman menagerie in Fallen Idol? That would work out
to a 9- or 10-day supply.

them. Sometimes they get away from me and I think I have uploaded them and
haven't. I know Real Life has really hit Mel and have always wondered how she
keeps up her site. The FTP site is peanuts compared to her site. Just send
them to stephke@i....... I would appreciate it.

I just turned on the TV directly on a scene with Nigel and the actor who we
all know as Paul from Black Harbour talking. I think the woman who played
Kit's mother in BH may be in it as well.
I have no idea what the movie is...but it looks fairly recent. I've only
been watching it for five minutes or so...I have no idea whether the guys
will appear again.
Its channel 7(ABC) in Chicago the story appears to be something about child
abuse and a custody battle.

Alex Carter (Paul Isler from BH), and Nigel Bennett co-starred in the 1996
TV movie Her Desperate Choice. I don't think Joan Gregson (Frances Hubbard
in BH) is in it, but she did appear in a 1990 Road to Avonlea episode, as
did about three quarters of all Canadian actors including N.B. :)

A vampire is a predator.
Most predators live in a feast/faminie life-style.
They do not make a kill every time that they attempt an attack.
When something like a big cat makes a kill it will eat a lot while
the food is available and then it may "starve" for days, living off its
previous meal while it tries to make another kill.
FK Vampires seem to be very successful predators (most folks
don't get away), but they also can't be willful killers. Too many
dead bodies get noticed. When actively hunting, it would make
sense that they would only kill occasionally and drink the body as
dry as possible so that they would be able to get well away before
the hunt for the murderer began.
It think this may make it hard to predict a "standard meal". If
vampires are habitually feast/faminie eatters, then any given meal
that we see may be something "more than normal" that was eatten
at the end of several days when they weren't really hungry.
Scattered through the series are hints/clues that the FK vampires
are not actively hunting for their dinner in Toronoto. They seem to
feed from bottles when just eating. I've always assumed that the
vampires had a mechanism for taping into the bloodbanks to obtain
what they need. This is what keeps Toronoto from being littered
with vampire bodies.
Also, it does seem to fit that folks may get bitten and bled a little
and then hypnotized into forgetting the whole thing.

Attractive as a Dr. Who/FK crossover concept is (Tom Baker meets Lacroix? Who
would win? Would Lacroix be undone by the Doctor's sonic screwdriver, or perhaps
a Venusian aikido move? <weg>) I think the real possibility is the black raincoat
Nick got from Duncan McLeod -- you know, the one with the interdimensional pocket
where all immortals stash their swords. This handy pocket even allows them to
board intercontinental planes without setting off metal detectors or being
subjected to embarrassing body searches.

The problem is with Yahoo, not with the lists or with you. Please do not
repost without consulting me.
Yahoo's mailer is misset. It is supposed to return posts which it can't
deliver to Don Fasig. Instead it returns them to the person who sent the
post to the list.
I have now set the address which was bouncing to nomail. This will keep any
more bounces from going back to the person who sent the post to the list.
The listserv at PSU never sends the poster a notice to say it can't deliver
a post. If you receive one, you can be sure the problem is a subscriber's
bouncing address. Please forward the whole post, complete with headers, to
me or to Don. We can then fix the problem.
Thanks, and FWITW, I thought it was me the first time it happened to me,
too, years ago on another list.

FORKNI-L RULES
1. No flames on list. FLAMERS MAY BE SET NOPOST. THE NOPOST
MAY BE PERMANENT.
2. Please don't quote more than four lines of a previous post in replying.
If you have more than one point to answer, then you may quote the
relevant four lines for that point also.
3. Limit sigs to 6 lines. This includes all information, decoration
quotations and blank lines. Your name and address count as part of
the six. If you sign your name on a separate line above the body of text,
your name and the blank line or lines between count as part of the six
line limit. If you have one of those services that insists on putting an
advertising tag on the end of posts, don't worry. We realize you can't
control that and it doesn't count as part of your sig.
4. Please don't send to the whole list when you are only talking to the
person who wrote the post you are answering.
5. Advertising on list is on a case by case basis. Please consult the

6. This list is for the discussion of Forever Knight. Cast, crew, staff and

8. The private lives of the cast are not a discussion topic. Occasionally
one of the fan club presidents will make an announcement, but other
than that, we leave the cast their privacy.

liaison and must be kept brief. Cons are only announced on list if there
is a connection to FK.
10. Only fan club presidents or other designated spokespeople may
make announcements of future projects for FK cast, crew and staff,
before said projects have been released or written about in the media.

I spent the weekend over at my parents' house and you can't imagine how
frustrating it was in an FK way! First, I forget to bring my disk containing
the story I am currently working on. But this was the least of my frustrations!
The parents have recently installed satellite, and my dad is a compulsive
channel flipper (I am, too, but it's not *annoying* when I do it! "g"). Imagine
my sudden shock and glee, followed by profound frustration, when he suddenly
flicks past a channel hosting "Black Harbour" -- something I never knew about
except through some very interesting crossovers! "Turn it back!" I cry, and he
does, with much grumbling. I caught one tiny glimpse of Nick telling some little
girl to go home with granny (or whatever) and that mommy would be okay, before
dad flicked on past. My plantive sighs and subtle digs finally drove him from
the room (he would never watch such a thing). Yea! The turner is mine!...Until
mom comes downstairs with a big bowl of popcorn and commandeers the turner. She
finally decides to settle on "Wagons East!," of all things! Then last night I
settle in to watch "Skulls," trying to catch some of Nigel, when the snow that
has been falling all day somehow disrupts the signal. The screen shows jagged
images and jigsaw scenes, with only occasional clear glipses of what'sis-name --
that Pacey guy. And I don't even watch "Dawson's Creek!"
Oh the many tribulations of an FK fan. Somebody please bring back the
episodes!!! Sci Fi, have mercy on us!!!!

I think that this is one of those cheesy moments (Stilton perhaps?) that we
often have on Forever Knight. There are times when we see more than one
empty bottle lying around Nick's apartment after a night - er, day - of
restlessness. Then there were those eps when he was not drinking at all.
LC sips at his wine glass of nourishment, yet when he bites a human he takes
only a moment and renders the human dead of exsanguination. And Janette
says that she can never bring someone across because she can not stop
herself - presumably from draining them dry.
Supposing all of the above are valid. The older vampires don't need that
much to maintain themselves that is why you see LC, Nick and Janette sipping
from wine glasses. Yet, when they actually take *live* food, the sensation
is so intoxicating that they, um, overindulge and drink the entire 5 or so
quarts. Sort of like a Thanksgiving dinner! (Sorry bad joke.)
Just my 2 cents, YMMV.
