<<Oh, I can top that...A friend in college was born and lived in the England
until he was about 13. Then he moved to "Joisey,." (New Jersey) Den he came
to da U.P. for college, and became a yooper, dontcha know?
Cockney/Joisey/Yooper.
Carla>>>

Accents can be such a hoot! I took Spanish one year in the alternative high
school I attended, but my teacher was Chinese, and she had moved to the
States from Argentina. I'm told that her accent (and therefore my Spanish)
was unintelligible!

Then, in College I took a Linguistics course. The professor asked each of
us to say, "Good Morning, Mr. XXX". Then he told everyone where they were
from. He got more specific than just the state in most cases, telling them
even the city. But when he came to me, he was confused. Then he listed the
elements of my speach, correcting naming all the places I had lived: South
Milwaukee, Wisconsin (terrible accent, pronouncing "th" like "d" or "t"),
Madison, Wisconsin (standard Midwestern, if there is such a thing) The UP (I
was a yooper, too) downeast Maine, (ayuh!), and Boston. I never actually
lived there, but my mom has a pronounced Boston accent, and I must have
picked up some of it.

So, imagine what a Linguist would do with Nick????

<<To me, LaCroix looked like he was in his mid thirties or so.>>

I think he was older. Nick was mid-thirties, and LaCroix seemed the "older
brother, father", not just because he was Nick's vampire master, but because
he was a more mature mortal when he was brought across. I pegged him to be
mid-forties in the series. That sounds so "old", but now that my husband
and I are there, and GER as well... I don't think it is!

Hi, I live in [xxxxxxxxxx]. Our wretched cable company still doesn't have the
Sci-Fi Channel, which most of the country has had since 1993 at least.
They've changed owners twice in the last few years, and they've certainly had
available channel slots -- which they fill with silly no-name stuff we never
heard of or else with duplicates of stuff we don't need more of (extra sports
channels and shopping channels or things like HBO 2). The only good new
channels we've received lately are History and Animal Planet. So I don't get
to see FK reruns, though I do have my tapes (unfortunately not properly
labeled, which in retrospect was rather empty-headed of me).

I subscribe to the list mainly to get news on future novels (if any) or other
developments such as maybe that reunion movie someday. Without the list, I
wouldn't have known about ON HOLY GROUND. BTW, what ever happened to the
Virtual 4th Season? I wonder if my sub lapsed, or has the project faded
away? Are the episodes archived?

When I was an exchange student in Germany (way back in 93-94 for 6 months)
my host sister spoke English with a German accent combined with a Southern
accent because she was an exchange student and lived in Texas for 2 years. I
couldn't tell any difference when she spoke German, though.

And Americans I talked to in Germany said I had a European accent, but
obviously I must have lost it when I came back, because no one has said
anything since.

Local radio show on WGN radio was talking about egroups. The host had just
joined a list, and was not prepared for the inundation of mail. :-)

I called up, and during the discussion, she asked me what groups I belonged to.
Of course, I mentioned FK. As well as my gravehunting list, my twinmoms list,
my Jody_Nye list...

I've now told several hundred thousand [xxxxxxxxxx] listeners just how weird I am.
:-) But I still got FK in there.

Yes, but I think an ep is missing from the V4 archive -- the last one. I think
I remember reading it on a link from Susan Garrett's site? It seems to have
gone pffftt, which is a shame since we are all so dedicated to keeping the
series alive. Maybe those who were rolling it out were overcome by other
committments?

Caligula was emperor from 37 to 41 c.e. No, I do not have Roman imperial
dates memorized. :) I initially thought he was too early for LaCroix aka
Lucius and had to look the exact dates up. Lucius was brought across in 79
during the August erruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of Pompeii. He
was probably in his early 40's at the time. If so, then he was born ca.
34-39 and could well have been traumatized by Caligula's effect on the Roman
upper class when he was a young child. It would explain a lot.

Nigel used not to make a secret of being born in 1949. I remember because I
it's also my birth year.

Assuming Lucius was approximately the same age as the actor who was playing
him, he was 44 or 45. Or am I wrong in thinking A More Permanent Hell was
made in 1994?

Just my two cents.

Just to clarify it...

I did *not* say that Richard Hatch played Starbuck. I just made an unclear
transition in my post. I am *well* aware it was Dirk Benedict. :-) RH is a
brunette with brown eyes... DB is a dark blonde with blue eyes. I had the
TeenBeat posters all over my room, including one gloriously hunky one of him
without a shirt, in frayed and tattered jean shorts that were partially
unzipped. I also had ALL the BG trading cards. :-)

Imagine if we had FK trading cards? Wouldn't *that* have been fun!
"I'll trade you my LaCroix #137 for the Janette #74 and the Urs #12."
"Anyone got the Nick and Nat #1? I've got everything BUT that one!!!"

Oh, and of course... Rick Springfield, our original Nick, played Apollo's
little brother Zak in the original BG movie. Too bad he got toasted. There,
another FK tie-ie!

Hmmm.. any other BG/FK links?

        Mmm.  What about a suit of medievel armor?  Not chain-mail;
the later varients that were developed that used a lot of fancy plate
even down into the joints?
Should be as light-tight as a Cadillac trunk (if not, a little
custom tinkering).
Just slap a piece of light-grade welder's glass into the visor and
voila: instant vampire armor. Also handy since it is gonna take
someone very serious to drive a wooden stake through the breast-
plate of that sort of thing.

Well.....everybody here likes cheese, right? Good, 'cause this is about to
get as pungent as Limburger.....

* IF we equate LaCroix with the Evil Cylons... (Now now now! I like him too!
It's a stretch, okay??)....and the Colonists' fight for survival could
symbolize Nick's struggle to regain what he was, then we could say that the
Cylons chasing the Colonists across the universe compares to LaCroix
following Nick through the centuries in an attempt to annihilate all
independent thinking and the right to exist as the Colonists/Nick saw fit.

* And no matter how many times they thought they had the enemy conquered or
left behind, they kept showing up again and again!

* There's the obvious Quests that play such a major role, and also the
chance of both of them being a futile quest. The possibility of the
Colonists finding Earth and discovering that the people they'd been
searching so diligently for were not what they were hoping to find at all,
much as we've questioned if Nick would truly be happy if he was able to
regain his Mortality......would it actually be the prize he thought he
wanted so badly?

* A human, Baltar, betrayed his own people by turning them over to the
Cylons like Janette "betrayed" Nick by telling LaCroix where he had gone
when he fled to America in "Father's Day"......

* Starbuck, blonde, "lady-killer" =  Nick Knight, blonde, "neck-of-the
week"?

* Father figures LaCroix/Adama both had incredible voices and a very
commanding presence.

* The Council of the Twelve kept a suspicious eye on Adama and his son's
activities and motives much as the Enforcers keep a wary eye on LaCroix and
Nick's situation? (okay so THAT one's as holey as Swiss.....)

Or, in a RL connotation..... The loyal fans of Battlestar Galactica have
been rallying since the 1995 against TPTB, with Richard Hatch leading them,
in an attempt to get said PTB to allow a BSG Revival, complete with original
cast reunion. Richard has been tirelessly plugging away with public
relations at Conventions around the world and has generated enough stir that
Universal Studios and BSG creator, Glen Larson, have actually started
considering the possibilities. Now it looks like it will come down to
whether or not Richard will be able to continue with his line of BSG novels
and maybe on into a movie, or if TPTB decide to go a completely different
direction with it, excluding all original cast and Richard's ideas.

Moral of the story? TPTB *do* sometimes sit up and take notice!!! Okay, so
that may not be an actual parallel, just a fervent hope!
