I get a daily dose of trivia in my email everyday and today this popped
up:

When Gaius Caesar was a boy, Roman soldiers affectionately
nicknamed him "little boots" for the boy-sized military
footwear he sported. Cute little fella.

Unfortunately Gaius grew up and became emperor, incongruously
retaining his boyhood diminutive. "Little boots" in Latin is
"Caligula." As you may know, he was a bloodthirsty, sadistic
fiend.

Of course I immediately thought of LaCroix!!!
Anyone know if this particular emperor was around during the time of our
fave General? If so, do you think LC would have mimicked him or
crucified him?

This sweet little fella was assasinated in 41 AD. If LC was in his mid 40s
in 79 AD, our dear General would have been around 6 to 9 yrs old.
Considering that, I hope our boy never did meet the nasty bugger -- but it

If LC was in his 50s, maybe he would have met Caligula in his early teens?

Though the stories of the Emperor alone could have had quite an impression

Depends on how old you assume LaCroix was when he was brought over.

According to the official timeline (http://www.roman-emporors.org is a
good reference for this), Caligula was emperor for 4 years (37 - 41 AD).
Its pretty reasonable to say that Caligula would have been Emperor of
Rome during parts of LaCroix's childhood. However, Lacroix would
probably be much more familiar with the reigns of Claudius and Nero,
and probably served as a Legate under Nero...

Subject: Re: FanFic Questions-Canada and Vamp "Diets" & "Donors"

First--
I want to thank all those who were so kind as to respond to my questions
about 'Canada and Vamp "Diets" & "Donors"' I asked about a week or so ago--
those who answered both on and off-list! VERY informative! THANKS!!! :) I
hope some of you don't mind if I contact you off-list for more info.

Second--
regarding that post and some of the responses...
I had asked [ques. #7] how the FK vampires could tell if another vampire was
a carouche-- SOMEHOW Nick, and I assume other vamps, knew that Screed was a
carouche. Nick not only had told Nat that a carouche was a "lower form of
vampire" [[[BTW-- I DID try checking at the transcripts at Mel's site, but
could not find 'Blind Faith"-- but I don't think that Nick said that a
Carouche was ONLY an animal, maybe usually is an animal and/or a vampire who
usually 'feeds on vermin']]] and, not to offend anyone, but when Nick
visited Screed in "Blind Faith" he did act like a snob when he spoke with
Screed, really like Nick, because he was NOT a carouche, was therefore
'better' than Screed. In "Fever" we are informed that Screed's 'first meal'
as a newborn vampire was a rat. In MBIAV, we saw that Screed had NO problem
drinking the blood of a human woman, it's just that, I think I'm basing this
on what both Screed and Vachon said in "Fever", that whatever you have for
your 'first feeding' is whatever you, as a vamp :), have a preference for.
Nick's 'first meal' was human blood-- his 'first victim' was the human woman
'provided for his dining pleasure' by LC &/or Janette-- and Nick did not
even drain her, as we see (not sure if it was in 'Dark Knight') Janette & I
think LC drank from her after Nick did. Nick, therefore, is not a carouche,
based on his 'first meal', even though his present diet of cow's blood is
looked down upon by other vamps, such as Janette and LC, who find it
distasteful, and it does not taste very good to Nick, either-- my guess is
that if cow had been his 'first meal', it would not have tasted so awful to
Nick.
We don't know for sure, although it's easy for some to assume, that
Perry's first meal was that human rapist "Doctor of Love", but I personally
think it's reasonable to assume that he may have gotten blood from a
squirrel, or some other animal, in the park before dining on the bad human.
The way I figure it, Perry was apparently acting normal and like his
pleasant, gentle, calm self when he and Jody were on the bus, until the
rapist started bothering Jody. The way Vachon describes how hungry a newborn
vampire is-- starving-- "so hungry you will take anyone" {friend, enemy,
lover}-- had Perry NOT already 'fed' upon the blood of something, he would
have needed to feed from someone on the bus-- maybe even Jody-- but he did
not even attack her even when they were home and prior to his killing the
rapist. I think it's too long a time from when Perry was brought across and
when he drained the 'Doctor of Love' for the 'Doc' to have been the 'first
feeding' Perry would have had to satisfy his newborn vamp hunger. He went
after the rapist and later attacked the cop who spilled coffee on Jody
because he was protecting Jody, but not from hunger. {{{Also, I personally
think it very probable that Nick gave Jody some cow's blood-- he assuming
that the some of the vampire community may consider that since her sire is a
carouche, she would not 'rank' very 'high' in vamp society, so it may be
just as well to give her animal blood first anyway.}}}

Jlkerr1228@a....... wrote:

IIRC, AFTER Nick woke up and this being AFTER he had fed from LC's wrist,
did not Nick say to Janette-- maybe in French-- that he was hungry [or
thirsty], and then his new vamp papa presents the mortal woman to him to
drink her blood?

From what I gather from FK --and I'll admit that we do not always SEE this--
in FK becoming a vampire is basically a 2 part process between the
'vamp-to-be' and 1 or more vampires--
#1-- the vamp-to-be is ALMOST but not completely drained by a vampire--
either all at once with the first bite or over a period of time, but the
final time most of the blood is drunk by a vampire and
#2-- the blood of a vampire is given to and ingested by the almost drained
mortal.
Janette tells Nick in IWR that she always takes too much, so the persons
she has promised vampire immortality to die-- and apparently do NOT become
vampires --"and there's no one to apologize to". Also, Nick's wife Alyssa
died after Nick drained her and before he gave her his blood-- either he
waited too long to give her his blood and maybe even had 'taken too much'--
LC refers to both. Both in 'Crazy Love' the merchant's daughter, and Nat in
LK, I believe LC tells Nick, after he ALMOST drained both women, to either
complete the process-- i.e. give them his blood-- or let them die-- I
presume that they would simply die from losing too much blood and not become
vamps. Even with Alexandra in 'Fatal Mistake' I truly believe that she would
have eventually died and not become a vampire unless LaCroix had given her
his vampire blood. And in 'Bad Blood', Janette tells Nick that Liam 'did
not taste enough vampire blood' to become a vampire.

I also think that 'connections' are established between the vamp-to-be and
BOTH the vamp who almost drains him or her, AND the vamp who 'donates' his
or her blood. In some vamp shows {like 'Dark Shadows'} and movies, when a
vamp even bites a human and takes some, not even all of the human's blood, a
'connection' is definitely established as the vamp can summon that human to
him or her, right? And when an FK vampire drinks someone's blood, IMO, a
bond is forged from the drainee to the 'drainer-vamp', and then when the
vamp-to-be drinks a vampire's blood-- 'donor vamp' who need not be the
'drainer vamp'-- a link is established from him or her to the 'blood donor'.
Vachon even said that when Angel was making him into a vampire, it was as if
she were 'flowing into him'-- but I don't know if it was during the
#1'draining' part or the #2 'drinking his master's vampire blood' part. We
only see her biting him, but that does not mean that she did not also give
him and the Inca her own vamp blood. Some things "happen" in FK that we
don't see!
...So I think that in FK in DK, the blood that LC gives Nick is part of the
process of making Nick into a vamp, and not his 'first meal'.

Also, for your consideration --I think that it is in Spike Shovelton's
WONDERFUL "Burning the Stubble" that Screed brings Tracy across after she is
shot and in the hospital in LK, and he gives her cow blood to satisfy her
'first hunger'. ***In this story, Tracy has an easier time around humans
than non-carouche vampires, because she IS a carouche in this story and her
'first meal' was not human. Makes sense to me! :)
Something I also thought was that MAYBE a vamp CHOOSES to NOT take human
blood for the 'first feeding' either so that the desire for human blood is
not as strong OR maybe the newborn vamp values human life or the 'available'
human or humans so strongly that he or she chooses to not take-- or risk
taking-- a human life. MAYBE Screed, a sailor, chose to drink from the rats
on his ship instead of taking the lives of his shipmates... Maybe in vamp
society, a carouche is a 'lower form of vampire', but as a PERSON such a
carouche may be a very special person, which may be one of many reasons why
Vachon hangs out with his best friend, Screed!

Considering it's almost 2 am here in PA... I hope that all makes sense!

I suddenly realized that it is possible that when Libs speakings
the parts of Screed to herself, she has a cockney accent with a
southern drawl.

On the scifi web site, there's an interview (RealAudio) with Richard Hatch,
talking about the new Battlestar Galactica project.

I found it interesting to hear him refer to "The Powers That Be" when talking
about trying to get the project underway. :-) Couldn't help but get a
FK-inspired flash on that term, as we use it so often.

Sigh... I had *such* a crush on Starbuck... Then, almost 20 years later, it's
Ger-Nick. (as opposed to Rick-Nick) I must have this thing for blond,
blue-eyed guys! (and what did I marry? Brown hair, hazel eyes... go figure.)

I've got to check the archives now... didn't someone do an FK/BG crossover(s)?

But isn't Richard Hatch a brunette? I was in San Francisco years ago on vacation,
and was hiking through Golden Gate Park when I happened across a "Streets of SF"
set. Richard Hatch was the replacement for Michael Douglas in that series, and he
was there shooting a scene. I could swear he had brown hair!

Of course, that was long ago, and I was really looking for my heart-throb ---
Karl Malden.

Oh, I can top that...

A friend in college was born and lived in the England until he was about 13.

Then he moved to "Joisey,." (New Jersey)

Den he came to da U.P. for college, and became a yooper, dontcha know?

Cockney/Joisey/Yooper. I just *loved* to hear him talk.. it didn't matter
about what!

(who, having lived in the U.P. myself for many years, realized that the accents
in "Fargo" weren't that far off, and people REALLY DO talk that way!)

Ooohh... now *there's* an interesting story crossover... FK/Fargo. How would
the sheriff handle the presence of vamps in her town?

The actor who played Starbuck was Dirk Benedict (who is
blond). Richard Hatch played Apollo and does have black hair.

My two cents on this one.

It's quite possible that he touched on all three Emperors. To me, LaCroix
looked like he was in his mid thirties or so. Nero died at about the age of
33, and he was present in Caligula's reign as a child. IF Nero and LaCroix
were approximately the same age, then LaCroix was definitely alive during
Caligula's reign.
However, we do not know when LaCroix started his services under Nero. He
might actually have served it at an early age, during the end of Nero's
reign. If we're going to take LaCroix seriously (to a certain extent) when
he said that he taught Nero to tune, then it's obvious that LaCroix was
present during the fire of AD 64, which was 4 years before the end of Nero.
According to a book called "Chronicle of the Roman Emperors" Nero had
nothing to do with Pompeii. On the show, LaCroix served under Nero, at the
same time approximately, Pompeii and Herculanium were buried by Vesuvius.
But it was Titus who dealt with Pompeii, not Nero.
I think that LaCroix served in his early 20's maybe even younger as a
soldier under Nero, but as a general more or less during Titus' rule. The
reason I say this is because there were hardly any real battles during
Nero's time, and there was the Jewish war during Vespasian/Titus' rule.
