<Amand-r>
That works. Buddhism isn';t reallt a religion. It was made one about
600 CE by a king who nmeeded a national religion. Although it is a
religion now, a great deal of people would argue since there isn't
really a god. Buddha attained enlightenment, but he's not a god. The
Neither statue was in a holy temple. If MNick was visiting all the
bhuddist and shinto temples on oph, say, the Japanese island of
Shikoku, he might have a problem. But neither statue was in a holy
place, and not used as such.

Based on the information we got at LCA 2 last year, the dailies cannot be
used as fund raisers. I believe it violates copyright laws. I bought a
tape and had to sign an agreement that I wouldn't copy it illegally. So,
even if Marg has the tapes she cannot copy them for charity. I believe they
can be sold for "fair market value" though. I don't know if they can be
given away.

FYOI - a religion does NOT require a god or goddess. I took a class in
comparative religion in college. Most religious do have dieties, though. In
fact, I had to do a term paper and talked the professer into letting me prove
"Star Trek" fandom can be a religion under the definition of what a religion
is as set forth in the class. To be truthful, I don't remember the
definitions (though I still have the paper and the notes somewhere), but I
got an A plus on the paper! LOL! <g> I do recall the professor pointing out
that we should be very careful before labeling something a non-religion,
because if someone sees it as his or her "religion," then it IS a religion.

Perhaps the FK vampires themselves are not true what it is about objects that
causes them to react. Now, in truth it is just inconsistancies in the
fictional series, but if the FK universe was real, maybe none of the vampires
really knows why, except that some religious items HURT.

Maybe, though, the "no god in that religion" is a good theoritical point. Or
perhaps it is only religious objects belonging to religions that believes in
some form of spirits or holiness that might ... I don't know how to say this
exactly, but might attach itself or itselves to the object.

When it comes to cheese, I'm in the mood for some sharp cheddar toasted on

<Amand-r>
Very good point. Here they teach a class called The Religions of Star
Trek. It was most informative. And what I was trying to imply is that
the power raising structure of Buddhism is different. Buddhism was
started as a philosophy, and not really ever declared a religion until
later. Even though you can have a religion w/o a God or goddess, I
wasn't specific enough.

<Amand-r>
True. Once again, I am wondering what it feels like to get "beamed
up". Oh crap. But really, you're right. I still think it has to do
with how the item in question has been "charged" with energy. The best
way to stockpile said energy (at least in Christianity and Witchcraft)
is to charge weapons or other items with ritual (consecration). Some
Native American rituals work that way too, which might explain the
ritual daggers. If said item were "charged" then it might be hard to
touch. The Buddhists generally don't consecrate statues (I said
*generally*), so perhaps that would be it.

There are about 12 fonts you can chose from. and the FK logo. whatever

Lessee...

(1) Considering that they spoke modern French even back in 1228 (at least
according to the flashbacks they did)... nope.

(2) Considering that Ger, Nigel, and Deb are all actors, presumably trained
in imitating accents -- at least to a certain degree... probably not.

(3) Considering that the shifts were gradual... Well, most people who move
from one English-speaking area to another pick up the accent of their
adopted area after some time living there, so they probably didn't even
notice their speech patterns and pronunciations were changing.

(4) Anyone who does a lot of traveling within a supposedly monolinguistic
region quickly finds the need to be able to assimilate and parrot back the
accent of the region s/he is visiting as a survival tactic (to wit: Not
three months after enrolling at MIT, I learned to say "pæck the cæh in
Hævid yæd" and ask for "tawnic" and "fræppes" instead of "soda" and "thick
shakes"***). Vamps, being utterly adaptable, are masters at this.

>Or would the fact that they can
>assimilate knowledge through feeding been what enabled them to keep up with
>the changes in language?

(5) In one of his experimental attempts at subduing the entire known world,
Lacroix forced Nick and Janette to implement "the Great Vowel Shift" across
the segment of the population they had chosen to allow to breed in order to
obtain a better quality of... dinner. Those who resisted the shift became
*tonight's* dinner instead of *next decade's* dinner.

Okay...::doing calming exercises:: Buddhism is very much a religion. There
may not be a "god" in it, but that is not a requirement for something to be
considered a faith. Striving to purify one's soul, a belief that all things
are interconnected, governing one's behavior by the certain knowledge that
what one does will come back to one, sounds like a religion to me. If object
of this religion has been consecrated by a cleric of that religion, someone
who has dedicated his or her life to the above precepts, I would think that
object would be just as "holy" as a sacred object of any other religion, and
just as repellent of the FK vamps.

I would think that part of the process of deconsecration is the removal of
*all* saced objects, which I believ statues of saints are considered.
Although we saw some of those nifty floor candalabrum at Vachon's church, I
don't recall every seeing any statuary. So if there isn't anything left
behind that retains a sacred "charge", I don't imagine the place would be
harmful to a vamp. I love Vachon's audacity in choosing it as his home.

Subject: List MIA's

Greetings all,

Looking over the posts regarding "old listees," I couldn't help but wonder
about whatever happened to Rosebud. I think her name was actually Jerri, and
she was president of the Fred Mollin Fan Club. Has she dropped out of the
fandom? I ask because I don't recall seeing any posts from her
in...(thinking)...at least a year, and she used to post fairly regularly.
And speaking of "List MIA's," has anyone ever come across the whereabouts of
Vampwrtr, or the circumstances for his or her departure? I've had computer
troubles in recent times and have been nomail on more than one occasion, so
it's likely that I could have missed any posts in regard to either Rosebud or
Vampwrtr. My apologies in advance, if this is the case.

And one other thing...whatever happened with the FK Fan Fic awards?

Best Wishes,
Stephen Lansing

I was at a car-show on Sunday with my dad.
We were walking down a line of cars and came upon a beautiful
brilliant red 1960 Cadillac convertible. I was admiring the lines of
the car when my dad stepped to the car's rear to see the fins
better. The trunk was open and my dad said with middle awe
"Wow, you could put a couple of people in here."

All I could think of was Mel Moser's Tight Spaces and Nat and
Nick's romantic escapade in the Caddy's trunk one fine day.

Subject: Admin: Religion

As a matter of fact, Buddhism _is_ a religion. It's generally considered one
of the major world religions, and has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court
in rulings as evidence that a religion does not have to have a divinity or
divinities as focus.

I am very sure the poster meant no offense. We have had a number of times
over the years when a misunderstanding about a religion or philosophy has
resulted in a problematic post. Forkni-l has always been a model list in
this respect because we've always been able to deal with our diversity
without flames. The many lists which have spun off on various
religion-related topics are proof of this. All resulted from interest groups
and nobody, to the best of my knowledge, went away from us with hurt
feelings. Take a bow, guys -- this is something to be very proud of!

Anyway, on Forkni-l all views are welcome and treated with respect. We've
never needed a rule on this point, and I hope we never will.
