I would also like if anyone has any speculation about how long LaCroix served in the army, and how long it took him to be General. I need this for a fic. Vesuvius erupted on the 24th of August 79AD. I think that LC was about 45 when he was brought across. This is actually kind of old to still be in service. Most legionaries spent 25 years in the military athen retired with a small pension. One(of higher status) could join the academy at 15 to begin intensive training to become an officer, this is most likely what LC did. By 79AD I would think LC would have been a general for a while. But in LC's case his position of power and noblity could very well have him leading armies until the day he died....<eg> Kylie. knightraven@c....... http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/knightraven FK Merchandise avaliable here! Well, they seem to buy the argument, at least as far as it applies to vampires in general. I just read that the Sci-fi channel is going to be doing a miniseries involving vampires, called "Ultraviolet", beginning on July 31. I don't know if I should feel hopeful that at least they're doing something about vampires, or mad that they're doing this, but wouldn't do the three FK movies that Tri-Star wanted. Subject: Which came first, FK or PN Elrod Considering our recent thread of vampire detectives, I decided to contact PN (Pat) Elrod and see which came first, FK or her series. Here's what she said: "When the first Nick Knight pilot was broadcast with Rick Springfield I gave out a hearty groan, because I knew my books would be accused of ripping off the idea. I just didn't know it would happen 12 years after the event! <G> The truth is my first Vampire Files novel Bloodlist, had been finished by 1986 and sold along with 5 others to Ace Science Fiction on April 25, 1988. Bloodlist was published and selling off the racks in April/March of 1989. The Springfield pilot aired August 20, 1989. As the time it takes for filming an post-production work is great, there was NO way the original pilot could have been developed, shopped around, sold, and produced in a mere 6 months. Hollywood can hussle when it wants to, but not, I think, in this case. My information sources are the contract I have with Ace, which I've just taken from my file cabinet to check, and the dating for the pilot is from The Vampire Gallery, Who's Who in Vampire Video by J.Gordon Melton, an exhaustive researcher. By the way, he asked me this same question about which came first and got the same story. This was a case of great minds--me & James Parriott--thinking (almost) alike. I watched the pilot and decided that there were more differences than similarities between the two concepts. I am still a great fan of the TV series. About 2 years later I was accused by a reviewer of ripping off Lee Killough's vampire cop novels, Bloodhunt (1987) and Bloodlinks (1988)--the publication of both predate the 1989 Springfield pilot and my books. News of Lee's books even existing was a big surprise to me; I'd never heard of them. (blame her apathertic publisher and crappy covers for her small sales. I had to find my copies in a library and a used bookstore) In this case there are numerous similarities between the concepts, and Lee's definitely came first! I wrote to Lee to let her know I'd NO idea she'd had two vampire cop novels out--this was long after my 3rd novel had hit the racks! She and I struck up a correspondence and mutual admiration society and are still good buds. I'm glad to report that her novels have been re-released as a trade paperback by Meisha Merlin Publishing, Inc. with a MUCH better cover and are well worth reading. (My copy's autographed by both the author and artist--hee-hee!) (Libs' note: Pat included a link to www.amazon.com that didn't cut and paste correctly, but Lee's books should be available there) For those interested in seeing Nigel Bennett, John Kapelos, & Jim Byrnes (Joe from Highlander) "guest starring" in one of my books, I invite everyone to pick up a copy of THE DARK SLEEP, which is now in paperback. All the gentlemen in question were aware of being "cast" in the plotline and were pleased with my tip of the hat for their inspiration of 3 characters in the story. (Libs' note: Pat included a link to www.amazon.com that didn't cut and paste correctly, THE DARK SLEEP should be available there) And for other news--Nigel and I have finished the 2nd Richard Dun novel-His Father's Son, and the cover is by good bud Jamie Murray. You can see samples of Jamie's other works at: <A HREF="http://www.xim.com/Jamieart.asp">XIM Art Centre</A> (http://www.xim.com/Jamieart.asp) and <A HREF="http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/suehaley/lair.htm">MYHR'S LAIR</A> (http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/suehaley/lair.htm). He is also offering "Prince of the City" a wonderful portrait of LaCroix and Nigel, which prompted me and Nigel to ask Baen Books to hire Jamie for the job. The cost of a print is very reasonable and for a small addition, Jamie will matte them for you. Jamie is also planning to sell prints of the bookcover, once the publisher is finished with the original. You can contact him via either of those sites for more information. I am in the process of finishing a novel about Quincey P. Morris, the Texan in Dracula, bringing him back as a vampire. In a costume party sequence I have him briefly encountering a "tall, imperious looking blond man dressed as a crusader" --by the name of Lord Richard d'Orleans. I thought it'd make a cool in-joke for my and Nigel's readers! Further information on His Father's Son may be found at Nigel's website. Cheers and Grins-- Pat I just want to add that everyone should check out Jamie's magnificant art! He's not only talented but a heck of a gentleman of the nicest sort! --Libs ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jun 2000 21:02:08 -0700 From: Kyer <kyer@p.......> Subject: Re: Angel vs FK DanaKnight wrote: What fun is being a vampire if you can't fly > or whammy? Every time they showed the bench, with his peaked gray hair, upright bearing, and old-style-sophisticated suits, I had a YKYBWTMFK moment. It got me thinking. Could hockey be a suitable occupation for a vampire? The games are indoors and usually at night (or pre-dawn, if you're a youth coach getting cheap ice time). The players glide swiftly from place to place, so a quick swoop wouldn't be too noticeable. The low body temp could be explained by the freezing arena. So I came up with ... The Top 10 Differences if Vampires Played Hockey 10. Sudden death overtime wouldn't necessarily be the end. 9. Ticket disclaimers would warn of the dangers of flying pucks, sticks, and players. 8. Most popular merchandise? Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils. Least popular? Calgary Flames. 7. Play-by-play announcers would have to find another term for traversing the blue line besides "brought across". 6. Each team would have an Enforcer who really Enforced. 5. Goalies wouldn't be the only ones wearing neck protectors. 4. Hockey players would have more teeth than the average person, not fewer. 3. Cross-checking would be a major penalty 2. Spearing would be a game misconduct penalty. 1. That's not champagne they're drinking out of the Stanley Cup. -- Bob Cradock cradock@s....... Homicide: The best damned show on television.
