Isn't it all the same light? Now I shall return to lurking, and go find a physicist to explain the difference between sunlight and moonlight... It has the Forever Knight theme as well as those for a few other shows such as <nostalgic sigh> Dr. Who and Thunderbirds Are Go! Having great fun listening to the theme songs while imagining what parts the FK vamps are playing. <eg> "Thunderbird 4?! Come in, Thunderbird 4! Are you all right, Nick?!" Isn't it all the same > light? Because the moon is made of cheese. And us Forever Knight fans are great at cheesey rationalization. So if the moon is reflecting sunlight and the vampires are not turning into puffs of flaming, smoking dust at the touch of moonlight, then the moon must be made of cheese. Cheese attracts rodents, including rats. Rats attract carouches. Screed is a carouche. Carouches are vampires found on Forever Knight. Both Screed and rats can be found in the moonlight on Forever Knight. Although Screed does go "slurp" when feeding on a rat on Forever Knight, he does not go "poof" in the moonlight while slurping rats on Forever Knight. Therefore the moon on Forever Knight is made of cheese. See, it all makes perfect sense! If you are a Ratpacker who watches Screed slurp on rats in the moonlight on Forever Knight without going "poof." ("Not Going Poof" refers to both Screed in the moonlight slurping on rats and Ratpackers watching Forever Knight in the moonlight.) --Libs ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2000 23:54:37 -0500 From: "Brenda F. Isn't it all the same >light? The biggest difference is in the amount of light the earth receives from each. The moon is smaller than the sun and only receives a portion of the sun's light. Of that portion it receives, a certain amount is absorbed into the moon (which is why the lunar dayside is so incredibly hot), a certain amount is reflected (a portion of which is visible from the earth), and a (probably very small) amount is refracted, or shifted slightly in color. So the earth receives a lot less "sunlight" from the "moon", and some of it is in a different color range. This makes it a lot less powerful (both physically and metaphysically). The other major difference is that the light from the sun reaches the earth "straight on"; when we see the sun "at an angle" it is because of the curvature of the earth, not because the sun's light has been reflected off anything (exceptions: predawn and twilight, when we see light even though the sun has not yet risen or has already set). When light is reflected, it bounces off at an angle equal to the angle at which it arrived. When sunlight bounces off the moon, it bounces off at odd angles based on the moon's topography; not all of these angles are on a path to be viewable on earth. Therefore, the "harming power" of moonlight is even further reduced. Brenda F. Bell webwarren@e....... /nick TMana IM: n2kye Arctophile, computer addict, TREKker, stealth photographer... Isn't it all the same >light? When sunlight is reflected off of something solid, like the moon, most of it is absorbed into the moon's surface. What we see has the same source, but is far less intense. For instance, Nick couldn't stand the light from the mirror (in Father Figure) because light off a mirror is almost entirely reflected and stays as a single beam, so it is nearly direct sunlight. Yet everytime Nick looked at a person or object in sunlight, what he was actually seeing *was* the sunlight reflected off of them, just not intensely or directly enough to cause problems. I should, of course, point out that this was made up off the top of my head based on the current Optics unit in my physics class. That and all the English classes which taught me how to sound authoratative on absolutely anything. ;-) Amanda Cleveland ------------------------------ End of FORKNI-L Digest - 20 Jan 2000 to 21 Jan 2000 (#2000-21) **************************************************************
