I don't have access to the original posts on this episode, and more
frustrating yet, my Lewis Carroll is packed, so this is all from rather fuzzy

That's not fair. He's been working for CENTURIES to find a cure and has
tried everything from spiritual herbs to quack doctors. I don't think he
can be accused of looking for a quick fix after looking for centuries and I
don't think he can be blamed for getting a little out of hand when he thinks
he has finally found one; he has been working on it for a very, very long time.
I think the fact that he didn't immediately say "Look, I'm mortal...let's
hit the bed" speaks volumes for the way he feels about Nat. It goes deeper
than just the physical, he wanted to share the sun (which means the world to
him) with here more than just sharing his body (even though, if I were
Nat.....I would've thrown that boy on the floor the minute he was out in the
sun and it was obvious it had worked). Probably thought he had plenty of
time to set up and do it right. Try to imagine what you would feel like if
something you've been working on all your life finally happened, imagine the
heady, giddy, hysterical feeling of joy, of wanting to just run out and
enjoy all the things you've been denied for so long. We all know Nick's
obsession with seeing the sunlight....that was so important to him, of being
able to hang with Schanke....if the Fix had of worked, I'm sure he would
have planned candlit dinner, and music and wine and roses....but it didn't,
so he couldn't.
Not his fault....not, not, not, not!!!

Actually this brings up a good point I've been talking about to a few
people. You really can't go by what is/isn't in the actual script for
canon. It's sort of like the argument we had a while back about Miklos
being a vampire because Gillian said he was. Well, *maybe* he was, and
maybe he wasn't. You have to go by what you see. For something like
television, which has so much input from so many people, from scriptwriters
to lighting to directors to actors, you really have to go by the whole
product that you see. So Gillian may have *intended* for Nick and Marian to
have done the wild thing, as evidenced by the script, but that's not what
necessarily comes across on the screen, and it certainly isn't the only
interpretation.
I thought they did, until Diane Eschelbargar pointed out that Nick is only
buttoning up the things we saw Marion button up which is a very interested
point and lends a lot of ambiguity to the scene. Which works in Nick's
favor--this episode earned him the nickname "the cure slut" over on AOL
after it aired.
My two cents, I thought adding that bit of sex between them on the spirit
plane and in the FK real world was tacky and tawdry and rather unnecessary.
Until I read the script I thought USA had added it to spice up the show and
was actually vaguely disappointed to see that it originated from Gillian.
But it is in character for Nick to go off and do something like this, then
call Nat and chortle about it afterwards (he really doesn't deserve her).
Yep, he earned that nickname in that one, IMO.

following passage in the "food and manners" section:

Now I think I know why Janette kept turning her head when Nick tried to kiss
her in the DBtLotM flashbacks! On the other hand, maybe this is how he and
Janette were able to... have... relations that night. He was too souped up
on garlic for her to even *think* about biting him! Oh I feel a fic idea

I can visualize a physical rationale to get around the "bloated" problem:
The vampire's digestive system is so efficient that blood is absorbed the
moment it hits the stomach, assimilated directly into the drinker's
bloodstream, so he or she can consume almost unlimited amounts. That still
doesn't eliminate the "time" problem, unless we do accept a "metaphysical"
(i.e., it's transferred instantly by magic) explanation. I, personally,
would find that unsatisfactory. What differentiates a vampire from a ghost
is that the vampire is a physical being, not a wraith, and subject to some
physical laws -- although they are supernatural, not conventionally natural,
rules. In DRACULA, Lucy could not simply walk through walls to return to her
coffin. She had to make her body mist-like and seep through cracks, however
minute. When Van Helsing sealed up the cracks, she couldn't get in.
It makes me grind my fangs when people equate "fantasy" with "no need for
logic." Setting forth a rigorous set of rules doesn't change fantasy into
SF. What makes SF as opposed to fantasy (here's my pronouncement on that
age-old issue) is that the author claims to be extrapolating from known
scientific facts. Natalie, with her physical attempts at a cure, seems to
think FOREVER KNIGHT is SF (except she isn't consistent, because she also
seems to think blood-drinking in itself, whether or not it does any harm, has
metaphysical overtones -- i.e., is intrinsically evil). I don't think FK is
SF; I think it's fantasy, in that the vampires therein are clearly of the
classic supernatural type. That doesn't mean they aren't subject to physical
laws.
Fantasy needs rules as strict as those of SF, and must be more explicit and
consistent than those used in mainstream fiction (where the shared cultural
assumptions of the reader do all the work for the author). Without clear
rules, fantasy fiction can easily degenerate into "anything can happen," a
thoroughly uninteresting situation -- we can't feel suspense for the hero's
fate if we don't know the conditions to which he is subject, and "anything
could happen" to save him at the last moment. I don't think FK is like this!
To clarify where I come from: I was introduced to vampires at the age of 12
by DRACULA (the novel). I never saw a vampire movie until I was well past
20. As a teen and young adult, I read every vampire story I could find,
which weren't many in the 60s. (Instant self-dating there.) In DRACULA,
Lucy does not die instantly. In fact, the Count's first few visits leave her
just a little under the weather. She finally dies of blood loss (or so Van
Helsing would have us believe -- Saberhagen's Count Dracula thinks the
experimental blood transfusions killed her), but that is after repeated
attacks, and immediately following a night when the Count had plenty of time
to hang around and drain her. So that is how I see that vampirism is
"supposed" to be (I was imprinted early in life, what can I say?).
I think the possibility of "sipping" gives the vampire more of a moral
dilemma in that he has a choice. If he "has" to kill, eventually he will
"snap" and do so. In that case, the only way out of his moral problem is
either to be "cured" or to commit suicide. If he has a choice of whether or
not to kill, those who choose to kill their victims are truly evil, not just
overcome by an irresistible compulsion. To me, the question is, is vampirism
an intrinsically evil condition imposed by the Devil, or is it a change to a
different mode of life, in which the individual retains free will and the
capacity for moral choice? As long as Nick believes the former, his search
for either redemption or "cure" is doomed, because deep in his unconscious
(or maybe not so deep) he believes vampires are irrevocably damned.
Well, I suspect I've said some of this before. Rant mode off.

I'm not in any way authorized to say this, but being on digest, I've
really been noticing the unnecessary use of spoiler space. Jamie very
kindly made a ruling that the spoiler-protected episodes could be
discussed on list with ten lines of spoiler space, but, guys, *only* the
last eight episodes are protected! Only GVP, HF, AA, FI, JD, Fran, AtA,
and LK are protected. In other words, spoiler space is completely
unnecessary when discussing Blackwing, or NiQ, or anything that aired
before GVP.

Nick's behavior in "Blackwing" was the first nail in the coffin of my
all-encompassing N&Nerism. I now maintain that Nick was falling in love
with her throughout third season, but that it was a process, not an end,
and that though the foundation was laid in the earlier seasons, he was
never able to accept it before MBIAV.

I don't know if that's unfair. I've always been left with the impression
that Nick wants to *be cured* rather than actually work for it. He hasn't
exactly been diligent where Nat's concerned, and judging form his past
exploits Nick has always struck me as being like the hypochondriac who
catches every major diesease there is and seeks every fad cure available on
the market (which is something I think he's doing with Nat). Think about
it: jade cups, abarats, shock treatments where he just has to lie there
chained to a table getting zapped, injections, spirit walks. Nothing that
takes real effort or dedication, and in the face of *that* type of cure
because Natalie hasn't really ever offered him anything else except the
litovuterine which she cautioned him about, he balks and hedges and
backslides like crazy.
In many ways I think Nick would rather have his quest than a solution. Also,
the fact that he works much harder at atonement and redemption, and that
he's willing to give up mortality for what he thinks will be redemption
("Near Death") is very telling as to what Nick really wants.
I actually started writing a story where Nick and Nat find the abarat, and
when its deciphered Nat tells him he has to drink a nasty tasting potion.
Nick is overjoyed until she drops the other shoe and tells him he has to
drink it every day for five years.
I think part of this stems from the fact that there's a part of Nick that
doesn't believe there is a cure and we're seeing Nick-economics at work.
It's easy to get invested and caught up in something that might possibly be
a quick fix--cheap outlay for possibly major returns. It's much harder to
give it the time (though ironically he's got it) and dedication only to
possibly get nothing back for the investment. I understand his logic and
I'm sympathetic to it up to a point, since I think he knows that anything
worth doing is going to be difficult. Where I get frustrated with him (and
the people around him) is in the question of what he wants, and I think he
needs to be honest with himself and the people around him. And they, in
turn, need to be honest with him about it.

I can't believe I'm actually entering this discussion but just seeing Ger
topless would be enough for me :)
I don't like movies with full nudity. I just don't find it appealing to see
naked bodies larger than life up on the screen. Nor do I see the point in
it. I also don't like graphic sexual descriptions in stories. I prefer
tastefully done scenes that are sensual. Night in Question was full of heat
yet everyone had their clothes on.
I'm NOT saying they can't be nude, just don't show it all. Ghost Mom had a
good love scene (which should've been longer!).

LOL! Maybe that's why he won't get close to Nat. He forgot how and doesn't
want to embarass himself.
I still think that they did it only on the spirit plane. Nick was only
rebuttoning the buttons Marion unbuttoned when she was taking the killer out
of him.
Nick does have a tendency to say the wrong thing to the wrong person,
especially women. He does hurt Natalie's feelings without knowing it, but
she should stand up to him more. I love watching Nat kick his butt when he
deserves it. She does let him get away with far too much.
I like the idea that Nick called Nat to share his feeling good with her, but
she detected that he was feeling a little too good. Like he was in the Fix
(which someone pointed out). SHe gets annoyed when he goes for the quick
cures rather than her scientific one, because she knows the others never work
and only leave a depressed Nick to deal with. I like the idea that he
might've wanted to do a little undercover work with her.

Thank you Tippi for taking the lead w/the Showstuff lady! She sounds
like a fan! Thanks everyone who has sent in their survey(s), who have
copied it & handed out to friends, etc.! Here's the latest on the
Surveys Front:
"FK VIEWER'S POLL" & "FK MERCHANIDISE SURVEY" have about *100* responses
*EACH,* so far. If you want to be included in the "Early Returns Analysis"
(July 1), send yours in by *June 26*! I will repost the email versions
for you to use, TODAY! Pls email me privately if you want the pretty hard
copy version (in MS/Word). SNAIL MAIL responses WELCOMED! Thanks to all
the lurkers who responded! Keep both survey responses coming!
SURVEY COMMITTMENTS & STRATEGY:

1) I will compile whatever I have as of June 26 into an "Early Returns
Analysis" for publication on SOS-FK and anywhere anyone is interested
in posting it. (Pls let me know if you want the analysis.)
2) I have committed to continue collecting survey responses through the end
of 1996. MY goal is:
1000+ responses for each survey in 1996!
to coincide with the start of season one on SciFi. So SEND YOURS IN!
This will accommodate the slower gathering time for snailmail responses
& allow folks who are willing to hand out surveys to get them out to the
non-Internet FK Fen for inclusion.
3) Frederic Ferland (MrHappy) has very nicely agreed to post the hard-copy
(pretty) version of the surveys on his webpage:

(you know), home of the FK scrapbook! Print your hard copy from there
to hand out with flyers, etc.! (Fred, pls correct me if I'm wrong.
I can't get out through Netscape these days to confirm...)
4) To everyone from whom I get questions on how they can help, I point them
to the SOS-FK webpage. I urge them to report to the SOS-FK page keepers
any accomplishments or completed "Save FK" events for inclusion on that
page. Whether it's a charity drive in another country; birth of another
fan club, etc., we MUST keep that page updated with reports of the
energy and the continuing wave of FAN resilience & determination.

GERMANY:
Been in touch w/4 ladies from Germany (Thx! Anja, Katrin, Uwe,
& Sabine!) German fans have seen the 1st two seasons but can't get the 3rd.
There is only one station which broadcast (covering the whole country) & it
stopped. German fans (who are MOSTLY off-line, BTW) have written lots of
letters to the local stations to get 3rd season & to Sony. All these ladies
wrote to me asking whay they could do to help. Other than the surveys &
letters to TPTB for new FK, I suggested they write to Sony & PTB to see if
they can get interest *from the source* to find a new station to air 3rd
season. There is no FK German fan club, so I referred them to the US &
Canadian fan clubs to ask about either entry into their clubs, as the
German branch, or tips on starting their own, etc. THEY WANT THEIR FK!!!
(and they are fighting for what is already in "the can"!)
I will be in touch with Daniella Kappes the keeper of the German FK webpage.
Have not be able get out on through Internet (PC probs), but she's at
http://members.aol.com/DanaKappes/main.html. The other four know Dana &
will work with her to keep the German page updated.
I forwarded Julie/KnightGal's (dad's) very nice German translation of one
of the surveys to Katrin (right? I have all my survey coorespondence at
home so I couldn't double check), who has offered to be an FK angel.
She is:
--translating the other survey into German
--making copies & handing them out to all the other off-line fans as handouts
--willing to be the local snailmail recipient of German & English language
surveys, so respondents don't have to pay for int'l mail.
--willing to translate back & email me responses (w/hard copies coming to
me by surface mail, later).
LET'S HAVE A BIG HAND FOR Katrin & all the German fans!!
URUGUAY:
Romina Campos has been my contact in this South American country. She
reports the local distributor aired English version FK for all of 1st
season and only *two* eps of 2nd! And, then cancelled! The good news is
that Uruguay is giving rise to several new cable companies this Summer &
The Sony Channel is one of the sources for programming! Romina also has
offered to hand out copies of the surveys & to spread the word about
writing to all of the new cable companies (& to Sony Channel) to ask for
FK. THEY NEED THEIR FK 2nd & 3rd SEASONS, TOO!
Romina's sister & some friends want to enjoy the English FK with Spanish
language transcripts. Romina was able to get the 1st season transcripts
off a webpage & is translating them for her friends. Do we have 2nd/3rd
season transcripts? Will/can someone create them? Thanks Romina!

I guess the point is that we are NOT alone. There are lots more fans out
there than we (or TPTB) ever guessed and there are folks in non-English
countries who are also writing to the same people we are, fighting for even
the prililage of distribution of the already produced & released eps!
WHAT ELSE WE CAN DO, INDIVIDUALLY: A FEW REMINDERS:

1) Note the advertisers for FK eps on any channel. Purchase their product,
(if you want, if you can) & send in the receipts w/a "thanks for
supporting FK" note. Nice Karen Tobin (keeper of the advertisers list
& stations address lists (found on SOS-FK)) wrote to me to say she still
welcomes any news of current advertisers cause she can get the sponsor
addresses & post them on the webpage, for all to use in writing!
2) Send in your surveys to lplummer@i.......
3) Purchase fan & produced FK merchandise (CERK tshirts & sweatshirts,
LK blooper scripts, pre-recorded Canadian, Ghost Mom videos from Canada
(ask Allison Percy about this) FK bumper stickers from Pegasus,
Fred Mollin's FK soundtrack CD & cassette tape from Crescendo or local
music stores, published fanzines, etc.)
4) Print off & hand out the FK surveys & flyers to non-Internet fans.
5) Donate to FK designated charities via blooper script, Bike Tour, etc.
6) Send in both Surveys! (If you've only sent one, send the other!)
7) Follow Bjo's advice, via Lisa W.: "Send out the campaign info EVERYWHERE.
...it should go into the envelopes where you mail checks to pay bills,
into anything you send (from) home. Never know where fans lurk! (Bjo)
discovered dozens of Trek fans this way, in mail order houses, the gas
company, the phone company and even at the bank! EVERYWHERE!
8) Oh, and did I forget?... SEND IN THE SURVEYS NOW! (Thx!!!!)
