But, as I always say, where's the fun in that? :-) Clearly, "Hunters" demonstrated that FK vampires can and do ride horses. That would be logical anyway, because throughout most of history, having horses freak out every time you come near would have been dangerously conspicuous. Therefore, despite what Nick and "Dr. Frakenstein" thought, the horses were spooked by something other than Nick's presence. The question is, what was it? Insect bite? Bad perfume? Opera critics? :-) But while everyone is dredging their memories for "Hunters," would someone please address LaCroix's willingness to abandon Janette? I don't know what to make of it. He's always preferred Nick, but such disregard for anything that belongs to him seems out of character. Could he have really felt it was a choice between their lives and Janette's? I thought Nat's reaction was just that of the exasperated scientist faced with ridiculously non-scientific evidence. On watching it again, after I got more of a feel for how Nat really feels about Nick, I thought she was remarkably good-natured about the whole thing. Personally, I'd have done something unspeakable to the little cheater if he managed to do with another mortal what he insisted he couldn't do with me--and then came to me all happy to discuss the sordid details! I think maybe his behavior reminded Nat a little too much of how he acted in The Fix--punch-drunk and lacking his usual discretion--and she was trying to get him to behave sensibly. Hmmm?) Anyway, I was under the assumption that although staking kills a vampire, they resurrect as soon as the stake is removed. Isn't that old vamp lore? Isn't that what we saw in NinQ? LC was fine once the stake was removed by Nick, yes? Then how come at the end of AtA, Nick kills Divia with a stake, but when LC goes to burn her body and scatter the ashes to the wind, the stake has been removed from her body, but she's still dead? Shouldn't she have revived when the stake was removed by LC prior to burning her? It has been bothering me - the reason why she stayed dead with no stake, no beheading (again) etc. Also, why would LC have enough bandages handy to wrap Divia as a mummy prior to burning? For what reason would LC even have bandages on him or in the Raven? I know, as Janette told Schanke, the Raven caters to the occasional fetishes...but mummy bandages? Mental image: LC searching through a closet, pushing an old bust of himself out of the way, tossing Roman coins, and every calendar he had from 1718 to 1995 over his shoulder until he straightens up and holds a box marked "mummy bandages" in front of him. He remarks, "A-ha! Knew they were in there." To which Nick answers, "You're a packrat, LaCroix. Don't you ever throw anything away?" "Waste not, want not, Nicolas. There are several TOPICS on FKFIC-L, the default ones are "ALL, -ADULT", this means you automatically get all the available topics EXCEPT the "ADULT" topic. I was rejoicing to have flashed on the rational reason why I have always disliked the device of "vampires who can't feed without killing" (sounds like a good talk show topic). Whether the human body contains on average 6 quarts of blood or 6 pints, it's still too much to "drain" -- as in, "The body in the alley was completely drained of blood" -- in a single brief feeding session. Do we see any indication in FK that vampires need the equivalent of three-fourths of a gallon at each feeding? Nick seems to get along OK on a wine-bottle size serving of cow blood, which logically would be less nourishing than human blood and require him to drink more, not less. If a vampire drank 6 quarts at once -- if he were physically capable of doing this at all -- he would look like a bloated tick. If it's 6 pints, it's more within the realm of possibility but still impractical. Which brings us to the time factor: Most scenes of fatal vampire attacks on FK seem to occur in the space of a couple of minutes. The vampire may not "drain" the victim, but he takes "too much," and she dies more or less instantly. "Too much," meaning enough to kill, would be at least a quart -- probably more, to kill instantly. The pint or so taken by the blood bank doesn't even leave most people feeling woozy. And the extraction of that pint takes about 10 minutes! The only way for the victim to lose enough blood in a brief time to die instantly would be for a major artery to be severed. That would cause the blood to spurt out too violently for the vampire to swallow most of it -- so there would be a pool of wasted blood at the scene of death, as well as messily splashed all over the vampire. So the oft-repeated FK scene of "grab victim -- vamp out -- chomp -- drop corpse," all apparently consummated in a couple of minutes (well, sometimes we could assume that the camera is cutting from the beginning to the end of a 20-minute encounter, but in many episodes the vampire is clearly snatching a very brief opportunity), is completely impractical.
