my brother-the-absolute-realist demands to know where
Vachon gets his food.

and, while he's forcing me to read these fantasy things,
i managed to find a very *interesting* vampire story in
_Realms of Valor_ edited by james lowder: it's called "one
last drink" by christie golden.
the main vamp is a blonde [nevermind that he's an elf]
and he's is basically very ashamed of what he is; kills off his
master and his master's icky ilk. asks his friend to then finish the
job for him [stake him] but she helps instead to heal him and
the vamp sets off to find a "cure" for his vampirism.

anything similar to FK? ;P

"depends" [a great all-around response, hm?]
who would he have to kill? anyone off the streets?
i don't remember if Nick ever talked about his
take on rationalization_but if he didn't, it's possible
that if he had to kill, say, some necromanic cold-blooded
serial killer he may very well do that.
anyone else, methinks, would be a big no-no _

i think it depends, in some episodes i really think he loves being a
vampire and in others, well... you know, and then if they were going to
make an episode they would prbably make him kill someone dear to him -
someone like nat, tracy, janette, lacoix (him and laciox really do like
each other it's just the differnses, ya know the mortal thing) and then
how he's in love with nat. and they can never be together the way
things are now. but *I* would have to say no because he's worked his
whole life to repay for killing.

they just have to many differnes, ya know the mortal thing)
so i'm really not sure but, over all (considering the whole show is
about him ww

Janette's pronunciation of Nick's name is the original French
pronunciation, that she would have known him by from the beginning.
(Seems like we heard it in the BMV flashback too, didn't we? From Fleur
or his mother?) It is spelled "Nicolas." In the French language, the "S"
at the end of the word is not pronounced. Several fanfic writers tend to
spell it "Nicolah" or "Nicola" in order to make it clear that Janette is
using the French pronunciation.

On the list, Janette's last name is generally taken as duCharme (our
hearing of how Nick introduced her in the BMV flashback). I don't know
if we ever had confirmation from any PTB on that. In the publicity for
the FK soundtrack CD, she is referred to as Janette duChamp. duChamp is
a more common surname, I believe. Does anyone have the final word on this?

I believe that the convention of spelling Janette's pronunciation of
Nick's name "Nicola" is widespread. This is not because we don't know
the proper French spelling, but because it is much more evocative in an
otherwise English text.

duChamp was the surname of the guys from the foundation that handled

I'm told that in the scripts, when Janette calls Nick "Nee-co-ah" it is
spelled "Nicolas" and Deb gave it the French pronounciation.

The name of our daddy vampire, btw, is always "Lacroix" in the scripts
I've seen and not LaCroix (well, actually it's usually LACROIX because
they indicate speaker in all-caps, but on occasion he's addressed by name
<g>).

However, list and fan-fic convention are just as valid for OUR purposes,
IMHO. I think we should go right ahead and spell them "Nicolah" and
"LaCroix"; I don't think anyone should jump anybody else for these being
"wrong."

Just my tuppence's worth.

I don't know. He was French, not Russian. And she was French herself, so
to get the sound "ah" at the end of his name, it would have to be spelled
"as" at the end. It would have to be spelled "ai" at the end to get the
"ai" sound. The reason it says "Nikolai" on the alias list on the Known
Vamps page is because that is what he was known as to the Russian nobility
in the third season ep,*Strings*.

From the look of things (Blackwing, for instance, where he's carrying in a
crate of winebottles), I suspect that Vachon gets his supplies through the
Raven. As to how *they* get their supplies, well, I suspect that is a
*very* dark secret, not to be known by mere mortals like us.

However, in purely "realistic" terms, some well-placed people could
certainly manage to "redirect" rejected blood donations, etc.,which would
otherwise be destroyed. Vampire recycling!

Nikolai is the *Russian* form of the name Nicholas, pronounced "Nee-
KOH-leye," with the last syllable rhyming with the English word "eye."
(The first syllable can be slurred to sound roughly like the English
short i.)

Janette says "Nicolas" in French, using the modern French pronunciation
"Nee-co-lah." (Medieval French sounded the s.) As Susan Garrett pointed
out earlier, there is also a much less common French and Italian form
Nicola (same pronunciation as Janette's) which is a possibility.

Subject: WAR: clarification of rules, please

Could someone in the know about this kindly answer some things I'm
confused about.

I know that in order to use a main FK character in a WAR post, you have
to have permission from the Leader of his/her faction.

And I know that you cannot use a non-participating Listmember in the
WAR w/o his/her permission.

However --

If a Listmember writes themselves into the WAR, are they then fair game
to be used by other faction members (or by their own faction, for that
matter) w/o their express permission, or must one obtain permission to
re-use them? If I recall correctly, the answer is that once you write
yourself into the WAR, you are fair game to be used by anyone. Is that
still correct? And is that correct even if you appear in the WAR in
someone else's post, rather than your own, provided you gave your
permission to be used in that other post?

Also, even if a listmember is considered "fair game" for anyone to use
once they've appeared in the WAR, is it necessary/advisable for parties
wishing to use that listmember to check with him/her to make sure of
timing so they don't end up in two different places at the same time???
Or does one just post, and clean up the timing problems after the fact?

I recall being very confused about this last WAR, and would appreciate
some clarification of the Rules. Thanks. And since I'm on digest, a
private cc in addition to a list response would be appreciated.

According to Gillian Horvath, the episode's author, the QoH flashbacks take
place in 1220.

Aaaaargh!!!! ACK! ACK! Wicked girl! My brain, my brain! I can't stop
seeing it now... Nick chasing after scantily clad English women in comedy
skits!

Cripes, now every time I see Nick (especially that spaghetti-eating scene in
The Fix for some reason) I'm gonna think "Oh look, a young vampiric Benny
Hill".

Thank wickedness I'm a Cousin. This would simply be too devastating were I
a Knightie. ;)

It's not Nikolai, trust me. Nikolai is Russian all the way. I don't doubt
this is the spelling you saw, but I think it's either a typo or
misunderstanding or perhaps in referrence to the ep with the 1916 Russian
flashbacks.

Maybe I should go take a peeksie for myself before I say for sure. ;)

Good afternoon, or evening or whatever,

I've heard from most of the faction leaders so far, but I still have no clue
who is leading the :

NatPackers
Ravenettes
FoDs
Die Hards

I have heard from the:

Vaqueros
Mercenaries
Knighties
Woofpackers
Nick and Natpackers
Immortal Beloveds
Cousins

Please contact me if you're leading any of the factions not listed here so
the leader loop can get up and running.

As to the possibility of FK in cartoon format:

A lot of the listers are complaining that it would be inferior "like
the Star Trek cartoon series". I happen to remember when the Trekkers hailed
the ST cartoons as the greatest animation series ever produced.

Granted, the ST cartoon did not have the burning social commentary that
the original series got away with, but it did have special effects that the
original couldn't afford (it's been said many times that animation is like
having an unlimited special effects budget).
My favorite Star Trek character of all time is still Lt. M'Ress from the
animated series (or, as I liked to call her, "Lt. Kitty").

I only hope that 25-30 years from now, we have 4 FK-related shows in
syndication, and an animated FK series to look down on.

According to J.P. just after we started talking about what the HECK they
were saying when Janette was introduced (does anyone have that script?),
Janette's last name is duCharme.

Now, in the spirit of no-prizing, maybe I suggest that duChamp is not so
much an error as an alias. Don't forget "Nicholas de Chavalier" and some of
the other names taken and discarded with identities.
