Well, actually, it was strongly implied that Nick stopped feeding on
innocents after Alexandra the Vampire Dingbat, whom he thought he'd
killed in the flashback to Fatal Mistake. He was shown watching her
wake with a very guilty conscience in spite of LaCroix's attempt to
talk him out of it.

Of course, then they had to try had to make killing the hunter in
Hunted in the second season feeding on the guilty. I mean, come on,
even if he's a poacher, that's a pretty minor crime and there's no
way Nick could have considered hunting animals for food a crime in
the first half of the 19th c. That's a late 20th century development.

Considering the responses to LK ie. how could Nick do such a cowardly
thing, what a wuss, etc. It causes me to wonder if it might have been the
intention of the creative forces to show suicide is a lousy choice to
make. Could be they wanted the audience to feel just how painful suicide
really is to those left behind.
Perhaps that is why the show opened and closed with LaCroix's powerful
speech on the value of life.
Personally, if even just one person is saved from suicide, I think it was
worth it.
I must agree with LaCroix when given the choice. "I choose to live,

Jane, I live in Wisconsin. 18c *is* balmy!! <VBG> P.S. -- we aren't there
yet, consistantly, even now!

On a totally wild tangent, let's look at another aspect of this birthday
thing: is Natalie more likely to be an Aries (April 14) or a Gemini (June
14). Now we all know she's Gemini *material* (i.e.,the Canadian award <G>),
but how about astrologically.

Aries: Fire sign. Hot emotions. Impulsive. Jumps to conclusions, jumps
into situations without fully analyzing them. Fast to anger, fast cool down.

Gemini: Air sign. Communicator, intellectual. Cooler, more hidden
emotions. Tends to be able to keep a lot of mental balls in the air, and
bounce back and forth between them.

These are just thumbnail sketches, but based on what I know about astrology,
I think there was a glitch in LK. Nat's *much* more likely to be a Gemini
than an Aries. Even her profession fits better.

We now return you to the rest of the weirdness....

I always figured that he couldn't keep it in a rack because: 1) someone
might notice and drink some by accident thinking it was wine, 2) it would
serve as a reminder of his misery, and 3) he can't find a suitable place
for it in the loft. If he had a pantry, a rack *would* work nicely.

I agree that masochism must be a factor in drinking blood cold--it's got to
taste awful that way. I always thought that blood thickened when it got
cold; if that's so, it must be like drinking red sludge.

Margie said:

I just re-watched "Nick Knight," the first pilot starring Rick Springfield
and Michael Nader. I noticed that this line (delivered to the male
coroner, Dr. Jack) was "He's like a brother." No mention of fatherhood.
Throughout the film, LC is referred to either as Nick's master or as his
brother. The father/son aspect was probably added later, during the
re-tooling for "Dark Knight," because Lacroix's line calling Nick "my
brother, my child" isn't in "Nick Knight" either.

This might have had to do with the fact that Michael Nader didn't look
that much older than Rick Springfield. Even though a vampire can bring
someone across who *looks* the same age or even older than he is (hey,
LC brought across that old Constantine mob don in "Father's Day"), I'd
imagine that it's hard from an artistic perspective to establish a
father/son relationship when two characters *look* the same age.

But then again, there's absolutely no way Nigel Bennett is anywhere near
old enough to be Ger's father, either. <g> So what do I know.

FYI, for the excessively curious:

     Michael Nader's birth date: 18 February 1945
     Rick Springfield's birth date: 23 August 1949
     Nigel Bennett's birth date: 19 November 1949
Geraint Wyn Davies' birth date: 20 April 1957

The above are from the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) & aren't confirmed.
I checked Ger's birthdate (which wasn't clear in the IMDb) against the fan
club info and 20 April 1957 is what the fan club book says.

Subject: Re: How Long Is the Longest Friendship?

Bravo to Deborah Bender!! She has eloquently stated a number of telling
points regarding the N/LC relationship. To which I'm going to add a drachma
or two worth --

First of all, if a type of relationship bothers you, then don't go around
chewing the darn thing to shreds. Someone else might want it. Go find an
aspect you like and pet it all you want. "And it harm none, do what you
will," is not just a witchy rule -- it's really a pretty sound philosophy
for anyone. Let's *discuss* certainly, but not to the point of anger -- a
total waste of energy that could be better expended writing another
passionate letter to TPTB. <G>

Neither Nick nor LaCroix are the products of 20th century Western Civ, as
Deborah *beautifully* and in excellent detail points out. And although it
may startle a lot of people, the values of 20th century West. Civ. are
neither as universal nor as *normal* as they might like to believe. Far
from it. In some ways, this is the most neurotic about body image,
sexuality, and related things that mankind has *ever* been: Vogue defended
their anorextic models by saying they are no *more* unhealthily thin than
any other magazines models (not true, BTW. As a former insider on the
modeling industry, I can tell you that you have to be thinner to get into
Vogue than anywhere else. Not that I was ever a magazine model. Or thin.)
Americans fight about homosexuals in the military as if there had never been
any there before, and about prayer in schools like the kids who really
*need* to pray are going to wait for anybody's permission! Sheesh!

There is a method to all this. As Deborah pointed out:
> We should also bear in mind that although homosexual activity has been
>around since time immemorial, the social category of a homosexual __person__
>did not exist until it was created by Victorian scientists. People could and
>did engage in homoerotic behavior and even homosexual intercourse without
>thinking of themselves as "homosexual".

There are periods in time when close physical relationships between men or
women were quite normal. Women throughout most of history have gotten their
primary emotional and sensual support from each other -- they were property
and bargaining chips to most of male society. And as for men -- in the
sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, as well as in military
situations throughout time, m/m relationships were seen as normal, even
strengthening. And this was even more prevelant in the Roman period of
LaCroix's mortal years.

Did they or didn't they? I dunno. Maybe I'll get a mind-flash on it
someday and toss out some fanfic with my exploration of the question.
Otherwise, not my problem, monkey-boy. Write me a story. I'll read it. I
might even tell you what I think (actually, I do that rather a lot...<EG>).
But I've got better things to do that argue about the biggest null concept
ever invented by the arrogant human mind: *morality* as a universal.
Because it simply isn't. I can illustrate some perfectly operational
cultures whose practices would appall you -- but they work. And I can also
illustrate some cultures who find *us* appalling (besides the Religious
Right<G>) -- for practices you find perfectly normal and acceptable, even
*moral*.

Onward and upward, folks.

What was that??? And 24th? Gee, that makes her a Cancer, not a Gemini, and
even more likely: homebody, somewhat reclusive, moody, emotional but not
always showing it, intellectual and philosophical...

Maybe there's something to the Nat/LaCroix faction after all....<EG>

Do we have any idea whether Nick really is a January 1 baby? This would, of
course, NOT have been New Years Day in his time period. But it could be
interesting.

By the way, I would vote that LaCroix is probably a Scorpio, or *maybe* a
Virgo. Janette's very likely Scorpio, too, possibly Capricorn. Vachon's an
Aries/Taurus mix -- cusp or Taurus with an Aries moon, maybe. Or a Leo moon,
but his ducking and tumbling are *very* Aries. Urs is either Pisces or Libra.

Anybody else??

This brings up something I've been noticing. I hear lots of references

not as his father. I don't know what this means. Any thoughts on it, or
are there episodes where he does refer to LaCroix that way?

Subject: homoerotic intent in DFF episode

A late first season episode which seemed to me to be highly
charged with erotic energy was Dying for Fame. This is the episode
with the singer Rebecca, and Fred Mollin's great Dark Side of the
Glass song. In lieu of flashbacks, this episode had what appeared
to be waking dreams or visionary fantasies, all from Nick's POV,
reflecting how he views his existence as a vampire. In one of these
fantasies, Nick is a jailed prisoner, and LaCroix, dressed in a cop's
uniform, strolls in front of the bars and taunts him.
At one point, LC reaches through the bars and Nick, instead of
shrinking away, leans toward LC and allows him to cup Nick's chin in
his hand. There is a shot of Nick, looking very young, looking up at LC
 with a piteous expression.
It probably doesn't come through in my description, but this scene
seemed to me to have a strong homoerotic current. It also reminded
me of S/M play. Last year, the director of this episode (and several
others) showed up in the AOL FK forum and invited us to comment on
his work. (Easy for me; DFF is one of my favorite episodes.) I emailed
him and described what I had picked up in this scene, and asked him
whether any of it had been intentional on his part or the part of the
 actors.
He emailed back that the homoerotic quality __was__ intentional,
and that nobody had been thinking about S/M at all. I didn't post this
exchange at the time because it was in private email, but now that
the series has come to an end I don't see any harm in it. I am satisfied
that the homoerotic aspect of Nick and LaCroix's relationship was
intended by the creators of the series, and not just something we
 are reading in.

This brings up something I've been noticing. I hear lots of references
from LaCroix about Nick being his son, but I don't remember hearing Nick
refer to LaCroix as his father. Even in Dark Knight, Nick says LaCroix
is "like" a father or a brother, while LaCroix directly refers to Nick
as "my child". Nick refers to LaCroix as his friend some of the time, but
not as his father. I don't know what this means. Any thoughts on it, or

I think Nick certainly reacts to LaCroix as a father much of the time. One
of my favorite scenes for that is in Sons of Belial when Nick goes to ask
LaCroix for help. Yet he doesn't verbally refer to LaCroix as his father.

Nitpicky Cousin mode:

Doesn't he say in the BMV flashback "I do not regret what I am"? So for a
little while, at least, he seems to be okay with it.

Timewise, what's the next flashback we see after those in BMV? In BMV, it's
not long after he's brought across. Do the flashbacks in SoB take place
during the Inquisition (some History minor *I* am!)? I don't know if he
regrets it by then, but he and LC don't seem *too* adversarial in those
flashbacks. When's the first time we see Nick verbalize a regret for what
he is?

It's sort of like trying to put together a puzzle when some pieces are
missing! ;)

By the way, someone posted a timeline for the flashbacks a while ago. Does
anyone know where I can find it, and if such a timeline exists for previous
seasons?

Bwahaha! Mental image alert! Mental image alert! FK retooled as a mummy
show. (Not to be confused with a muumuu show, which is entirely different,
and much *much* scarier.) Nick, having finally become mortal, is abducted
by LC and wrapped in bandages...

"He was mummified in 1996 and preyed on medical supply stores for gauze
bandages.... Now he wants to repay humanity for his sins, to stop being an
endless forever mummy..."

Instead of living in the Apartment Bldg of the Damned he will live in the
Apartment Bldg of *Ramses* the Damned (apologies to Anne Rice). Instead of
being a cop, he'll be a paramedic (the bandages are handy)...

I'll stop now.

Actually, in the 19th cen., poaching was an offence punishable by
imprisonment, hanging, or transportation. NOT minor. Very serious. I have
not seen the episode in question, but the crime itself would have been
considered significant, especially by someone who identified more with the
aristocracy than the peasantry.
