Hey, wait! I just got here a few short months ago, and now
by virtue of identifying with Amy's new faction, I'm being told
that I may end up DEAD in the next war?!

I guess, though, if my fate is sealed, I should just accept

Subject: A New War

It's happened. The new vampire Fox show is out and FK fans are
screaming *Bloody* murder. Well I have a proposed solution. We declare
war. The FK list hasn't had a war in a long time, and with the Save FK
campaign going on there was no time. But since the steam has died down and
FKer's have more time on their hands this just might provide some FK
motivation and optimism. Not that we shouldn't keep badgering the TV
bureaucracy, but this just might provide a pleasant diversion. Of course, I
have a confession to make. I like Kindred: the Embraced, but I like Forever
Knight better. K:tE is soapier, but I still like FK better. K:tE vampires
are slightly more realistic and with the popularity of Vampire: the
Masquerade it already has a built in following, but I still like FK better.
So a war is about to ensue. Not between FK factions or Kindred clans but
between each other. We write ourselves up to Toronto and work ourselves
down to San Francisco. We find K:tE fans interested in war to write on
their side to keep things interesting and have a good long fight. In fact
this might even incite some interest in our little show. Not that the
factions can't bicker with each other, but a new war against new enemies
just might be *fun*. So as the underground N&Npacker, Knightie, and
half-brewed pot says Adieu I leave you with this last phrase. 1,2,3,4 I
declare a....Kindred War.

I too agree with Nick's kissing talents. While I love Uncle and
his dark ways, when Nick kisses (Janette especially) I am a knightie
through and through. If I remember correctly, the first kiss that
made me shiver was first season Cherry Blossoms when Janette rescues
 Nick.

When Nick takes a woman in his arms and then explores her with his
vampiric lips a particular sceen from the the movie Interview with a
Vampire comes to mind. That is in the French theatre of the Vampires
where an audience member shouts to Armand, "take me!"

Great game!

Chinese (Manderin?) in Cherry Blossom and Avenging Angel
French, in episodes to numerous to mention
Spanish, in Sons of Belial

That's all I can get off the top of my head. I'm trying to remember if
Nick actually spoke German in 1966.

he said "Oh yeah!! That show thats on real late! Now, which one is
LaCroix?" Naturally I took the opportunity to fill him in on who he is, what
he does, and why he should declare his loyalty to him. He was very
receptive, and I got a free bottle of cat pee remover to boot!! So do I get
Cousin points or what?? Don't the Jehovah's Witness people get heaven points

I haven't gotten a response in a while, so I think I'll move the deadline

I think in theory this would be a wonderful way to promote the show, but
I fear in practice it would be a Very Bad Idea. One of the reasons that
our wars come off so well is because we already know and love each other,
so any attacks we make against each other aren't taken personally 99.99%
of the time. But we don't know the K:tE people.

Also, we don't know each other's characters well enough to write about
them. We'd be hopelessly lost, just trying to fit the two worlds
together at all. But most importantly, we have rival shows going on
here. There are lots of mutually exclusive canon going on, and a lot of
people aren't going to feel like compromising their own show for the sake
of the other. Never mind the fact that a lot of us are still fairly (by
that I mean *really* REALLY) bitter about all this, and to link up with a
bunch of K:tE fans is just asking for trouble.

In my own, admittedly highly cynical opinion, instead of releasing some
of that pent-up frustration about K:tE, it would escalate it into some
real lightning storms, and the whole thing would devolve into a flame war
very, very quickly.

In this mailing list, we have managed to be nice, polite and respectful to
each other. Remember that not all fandoms have that gift.

Actually, Nat met Nick while working at the morgue on her 28th
birthday, exactly two years before the present-day storyline of
Only the Lonely.

There are also differences in the American and Canadian versions
of the first season episodes (Canadian episodes run longer). Plus
there can be differences in interpretation based on an individual's
viewing. What follows is my interpretation of the facts presented
in both versions of OtL.

Nat is definitely interested in having a relationship with Nick in
the present day, but he doesn't seem as interested. So she starts
dating a man who proves to be a serial killer who later tries to
kill her in an effort to forget how she feels about Nick. This
activity makes Nick jealous, but he decides that it's not his
business to get in the way of her happiness (figuring I guess that
she'd be better off with a mortal relationship). My view of Nat
in this episode is that she was attracted to Nick from the first
time she laid eyes on him (others think differently). I think it
is supported by the following: Nick and Nat are talking on the
street in a flashback. Nick says something in response to her
offer to help him that they've been discussing, "What can you
possibly expect in return?" Nat: "Solving a puzzle is its own
reward." We return to the present where Nat says aloud to herself,
"Liar!" Anyway, when Nat is almost killed and Nick saves her,
he asks her in the tag, "Do you have any idea how worried I was
about you?" She says, "Yeah, I think I do." They look at each other
and Nick leans forward to kiss her, but she turns her head away
and they hug instead, Nick planting a kiss on her head.

I'll have to rewatch the episode to see, but I don't remember the
American version indicating that Nick tried to hypnotize Nat and
failed into forgetting she had seen him as a vampire in the morgue
that first time. I think that may only be in the Canadian version.

At any rate, no romance immediately blossomed after OtL. The next
"romantic" step takes place in second season's Be My Valentine.
It's near Valentine's Day and a serial killer is killing women and
leaving valentines on the scene. Nick decides that he wants to
try having a relationship with Nat. He goes to her apartment and
asks her, "What are we going to do about this, huh? About how we
feel?" They kiss very sweetly and romantically. LC, however, sees
them and decides to cash in an agreement he made with Nick when
LC had been in love (in the flashback) with Nick's mortal sister,
Fleur. Nick stopped LC from bringing her over, even though Fleur
wanted to be with LC. So LC made him promise that if Nick ever fell
in love with a mortal, LC would have the right to deprive him of her.
LC lures Nat to a restaurant, finds out she loves Nick. Nick shows
up to rescue her and when LC mentions their agreement, says he doesn't
love Nat. LC wants him to prove it by bringing her over. Nick goes
through the motions of preparing to do just that, LC tells him not
to, and apparently decides Nick must *not* love Nat. Nat, btw, is
in a hypnotized state, eyes closed, as Nick and LC confront each
other. My feeling about BMV is that both Nick and Nat were carried
away by the idea of romance. We aren't even shown them telling each
other they love each other. Anyway, Nick backs off again from a
relationship with Nat, I think out of fear of what LC might do to
her.

Of course, in this season's Night in Question, Nick, shot in the
head, has a temporary memory loss and doesn't remember being a
vampire. He shows definite romantic interest in Nat in that ep before
he knows he is a vampire.

But all three seasons have had Nick showing a romantic interest in
other women besides Nat.

living in LA does have a couple advantages). The place is located
upstairs in a hotel on the Sunset Strip--the people were really very
nice, and they have a very eclectic collection of CDs--everything from
"Lost in Space"to "My Favorite Martian", and seem to have a lot of Star
Trek memorabilia also. You can fax them for their free catalog of CDs
if you are interested.

Regarding Shana's posting, I, for one would not want to get wrapped up

it that way. I think if people are interested in stirring up trouble
they should take it somewhere else.

Amen. As someone who almost unubscribed when every post on this list was

To whomever made the original post(I've lost it), your loyalty to FK is

Ok; it's only in the Canadian version. Happy? :) It's one of my

imply that things which are only in the Canadian versions are somehow less

versions as pared down CAN eps, instead of the CAN eps as US eps with
extra stuff...?

To the best of my knowledge, the closest Nick has ever come to admitting
his love in our hearing was in MBIAV, when he says, "I don't think you'll
ever really understand how much I care." Far from a ringing declaration,
you must admit. However, in BMV, LC asks Nat how she felt when Nick
declared his love for her, and she didn't say he didn't... Of course, she
was drugged and/or whammied at the time. I can't recall Nick ever telling
anyone that he loved her... or him... in first or second seasons, anyway.

:) I am willing to accept this. :) Thank you, Kat. Looking down my nose
at Nick's reading habits was hardly a Knightieish thing to be doing. :)

Actually, the first rule of Continuity Obsession is that there
are No Errors in continuity. :) Whatever happened, happened, and the
explanation is just waiting out there somewhere until we find it. It
makes no difference whatsoever if the author had no clue whatsoever.
Nick, you know, is a Continuity Obsessive himself. It's there in
every rationalization. He believes that he stopped killing after the
murder of the ballerina in LYTD. Therefore, he has rationalized every
death since such that it doesn't "count," and thus he can therefore make
that claim to Janette in LYTD, even though he certainly knew then about all
the deaths we've tallied since then... :)

The first time I made an impassioned statement about how great BMV is,
someone told me privately that it was a very... stressful time for the
cast and crew. I got the impression that it left a bad taste in a lot of
mouths. I'm sorry about that, and I admit BMV has its flaws, but parts
of it still impress me immensely. NB's performance there inspired my
whole Light Cousin thing, just for starters. And the very idea of Fleur
is worth ever so much, in understanding Nick as well as LC.

I'm digging myself out of my ton-of-unread-mail pile to add my
voice to Catherine's and Karen's and Deb Martin's...

Those of us who are veterans tend to forget how, well, violent
and nasty the name "War" sounds to outsiders and newbies. For
those who haven't been in one, the best way to figure out what
we really mean by a "War" here is to read one (or _parts_ of
one) of the past wars (available on the fic ftp and web sites,
I believe).

The wars are about playing pranks on friends and favorite characters.
My favorite war-related quote of all time is from Susan G: "FK,
the only fandom in which attack is a sign of affection." ;-)

Thus, I for one am not interested in a FK/KTE war. I don't know these
people or these characters. (And they don't know me.) I don't want to
have an extended slumber-party with them. And that's essentially what
an FK War is... with heavy emphasis on the sleeping-person's-hand-in-
the-glass-of-warm-water and wet-bras-in-the-freezer-overnight <vbg>.

*That* said, the FKFIC-L is the *FK* fiction list... and, while cross-
overs are o.k... I think this would really be pushing it.

And, most importantly: *NO ONE MAY DECLARE WAR WITHOUT JAYE-our-
glorious-and-most-revered<g>-LISTOWNER's EXPRESS PERMISSION*!

Wars happen when she says so. No voting, no arguing.
(Although suggestions, submissive pleading, and outright bribes
 are permitted ;-)

It's a good thing you don't live in my neighborhood while I'm watching FK -
you'd hear that and a lot more....

To reassure Idalia, myself, and anyone else out there, even though I've
never been in a war and I lost all my FAQs in the Great Filter Implosion
of 1996, I'm pretty sure the rule "Nothing Permanent" is followed in the
FK list wars, and as nothing is more permanent than death (now that we all
stay mortal, anyway) we aren't actually in danger of much worse than being
pressed into service as waitresses on Amateur Night at the Raven... <g>

Well, death does seem to be a factor in my factional inclinations, doesn't
it? I'm a Fleur-Booster, and she's as dead as dead comes. Not to mention
the Nevermore mess... Maybe I'm a jinx. Maybe you should all be warned.
Maybe all the other factions should be glad that my primary affiliation is
Knightie, and I'll just inflict my bad luck on them... :)
