Yup. At least, *my* syndie station will be showing "Jane Doe" tonight at the
ungodly hour of 1 am. :)

Ummm... lessee.... I probably ought to put some substantive commentary here,
so... About Vachon. Didn't someone date the year he was brought over pretty
precisely? From a script or some such? And can someone tell me, please (yes, for
the same fanfic) how long Pizarro's campaign lasted?

I'm on digest again; please forgive me if this has been addressed, but in
the most recent digest there was yet another blatant reference to "The
Human Factor." Please, everyone, ALL episodes after DoN are spoiler
protected, and thus may only be discussed on the spoiler list. I know
it's been a long, long time since HF aired, but those are the rules. And
they are good rules.

Sorry for bitching... :)

I just hopped over to the People page to check and see if there was
anything on the poll recently and, lo and behold, there was a list of
the most beautiful people that were voted for online. Ger was #7 .
There was a number afterwards.I think it was the number of votes. It
was 21496. Do you think anyone voted more than once? :) Thought I
would share this with everyone.

:) I know Sandra and I are not going to agree, but there's no better way
to hone our respective arguments! :)

> >LC: "We will be together for all eternity...my precious flower."
> But yet in Partners of the Month when Janette leaves Nick, LC views
> that as something that normally happens in vampire relationships.
Well, perhaps in "normal vampire relationships," but certainly not
in LC's relationships... <g> Fleur would have been his daughter, and I
think that at that time in his life, LC did indeed believe what he was
saying. In fact, perhaps the loss of Fleur contributed to the cynicism he
displayed in PotM.

> LC had indeed brought Fleur over, I think he would soon have come
> to dislike the hold she would have over him (if he truly loved her,
> that is). LC always likes to be in control of his existence...
That's a good point. Very possibly, LC would have gone through a
phase of resentment, after the "honeymoon," but because I think the love
was real, I do think he would have grown and changed to accommodate it. It
has been remarked -- hasn't it? -- that Nick is almost the same age now as
LC was when he loved Fleur.

> >And she demonstrated an intellectual curiosity...which we have been
> >forced to contrive for Nick
> What about Queen of Harps?
I'm not saying Nick has *no* intellectual curiosity; I'm saying
that Fleur had *more.* This is important, I believe. I *want* Nick to be
a scholar, but he simply is not. It isn't in his temperment. It is in
LC's; it was in Fleur's; and I think LC was attracted to that in Fleur.

> recall any instances of telepathic connections between vampires and
> mortals on the show...
Neither do I, unless you wish to consider hypnotism an
unsophisticated form of low-level telepathy.

> Perhaps LC realized the same thing about Fleur--that it was on some
> level a romantic fantasy that would shatter if he brought her across.
If he realized that, I think the realization must have been
subconscious, and that it has been suppressed ever since. Whether LC was
truly in love or not, I maintain that HE thinks he WAS.

> But I also think that part of what attracted LC to Fleur was that
> she was a female version of Nick...
But by BMV, Nick had been a vampire for -- at MOST -- a few
months. I don't think that LC's relationship with Nick had progressed to
the point where a resemblance to him would be an attraction. On the other
hand, I have hypothesized before that, over time, one of the things that
LC might have found attractive in Nick is his resemblance to Fleur.

> Maybe when it came down to it, LC felt that he would
> only come to treat her as another "possession".
Yes. This is one of the reasons I feel he let her go. The cycle
of possession and loss LC discusses with Nick in CL is something he would
have known all too well by that point in his existence, although the way
he expressed it was no doubt informed by the memory of Fleur, a memory
which, as Sandra says, could never be subject to that cycle -- it is
totally his, for all time.

> The fantasy became *all*.
Both Nick and LC seem to have idealized, even canonized, Fleur.
If flashbacks are not to be trusted, then this is certainly one that
should be analyzed more closely.

> My view of LC is that he chooses not to allow anyone to get close to
> him. To open oneself is to give avenues to be hurt.
Which is why his feelings for Fleur disconcerted him so
absolutely.
"This bond I seem to have with you," Fleur said to LC.
"As if we've been together forever," he responded.
Judging from his outburst to Nick, this "bond" was involuntary, but it was
most definitely not insincere. Just look at the expression NB gave LC as
he kissed Fleur's forehead and said, "It's a great irony, is it not, that
such a cold, still heart can feel such pain?"
If you wish to take this tack (I don't <g>), LC's sacrifice for
Fleur may instead be a selfish, self-protecting act; he couldn't bear the
thought of living eternally with such a bond. (Nick's actions and
motivations are another topic entirely.)

My apologies to anyone else who has already addressed this;
digest, you know. :)

Thanks for the info -- I was beginning to wonder. Sometimes it seems like
they fly really fast, so I was thinking that perhaps they flew in a sort of
ethereal spirit form. But, if you say you actually saw him fly in human form
during the first season, I believe you.

See what I get for having missed the first season?!?!?

I could also cry, because I didn't tape any of season 2, though I watched
several of the eps. I did not tape them because silly me thought that the
show was so cool that it'd never get cancelled, and they'd probably be

But I loved the episode -- had some great (and chilling) moments.

Anyone else got an opinion?

Subject: WWW stuff

This is probably the worst message I've ever had to post to a group. Or
three groups, as is the case...

The FKFIC-L web site is shutting down. I'm sorry. I just don't have the
time or, honestly, the desire, any longer. From what I understand, the
FTP site (which I don't know the address of, sorry) is kept very
up-to-date, so you can find stories there. Also, I have a CD-ROM writer
and, because I can't bear to delete it all, I'll be putting everything I
currently have onto CD. (If you want a copy, it's $25 a pop - email me
for details.) This includes the HTML pages, so if you want an instant
fkfic-l site, you can make one.

I will maintain a JADFE archive, since that's my group and I feel
responsible for it. Any author who's posted to JADFE and wants their
stuff on the web site should contact me. (I'm NOT going through my
hundreds of unarchived stories to figure out which ones were from JADFE.
Sorry.) JADFE will remain active, but mostly because James Walkswithwind
is sweet enough to keep up with the subscription requests. (So thank
her, not me.)

Once again, I'm sorry for doing this to you all. I know how I'd feel if
some of the fandom sites I frequented shut down. But also understand
that I have a Real Life, and have been disenchanted with FK since the
third season began. (In fact, I stopped watching it two eps into 3rd
season.)

I hope you all don't hate me too much. And thanks for having given me
the pleasure of reading all the lovely fiction written during my eighteen
months of FK net-fandom. Keep the faith, eh?

Gods, I feel like I've been kicked in the stomach.

Sorry, Darkangel. But this site was where I *found* FK fandom, first
learned who all of you were, decided I wanted to join...

I'm really sorry you feel you can't continue the web site any longer. The
FTP site is great, but the organization that went into the web site was
phenomenal

People, I'm posting this thru FORKNI-L for a reason. I don't have the
skills necessary to maintain a web site. Someone out there (besides
Darkangel) probably does. Please, get in touch with her. See if something
can be worked out. I am willing to do whatever yeoman's labor I can to
help; but I'm an office worker and a writer, not a net-tech or a programmer.

The amount of fiction being posted out here shows that, even if Darkangel
has burned out (for which I *do* grieve in all honesty -- I saw a lot of
imagination and high good humor in those stories!), surely there is enough
interest to keep -- or recreate -- an FK web site!

On another note, is there someplace besides the web site that JADFE was
being archived/posted (besides the JADFE list, of course, which I'm on)?

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm e-mailing Darkangel right now
about the CD.

Keep the Faith, Steff? Don't worry.

From: Props Guy <PropsGuy@a.......>
Subject: Re: why french fries and not tea? (long)

Did anyone think about the relative time differences in those episodes (tea
vs. fries)? In Dark Knight, he hasn't been working with Nat that long. When
we first see him in his loft and he pours blood into the Mayan goblet, he's
pretty obsessed. In later episodes, he'll pour it into a wine glass like a
gentleman and sip it at the table. Maybe, by the time he gets to the fries,
he's further into the "curative" process then he is when he tries the tea.
But the problem with all of this, I think, is Nat's approach. She treats
Vampirism as if it's an eating disorder, like if Nick would just change his
diet...
Face it, the guy is dead, long dead. His organs don't work. He blacks out
in NiQ because, even though he's been eating, his body can't process food and
he's starving to death. I think that Vampires' systems are more generalized
than ours, and therefore, more specific. Huh? I'll explain.
We've got all these internal organs and each one has a very specific function
which all contribute to keeping us alive. In order for each of these organs
to do their thing, we take in different substances and we expell different
substances. We've got blood, sweat and tears, digestive juices, saliva,
semen, ovum, urine, feces, oxygen, carbon dioxcide, etc. We can't substitute
one function or substance for another- we need them all. We don't get to say
"Well, I did my breathing today, so I can skip dinner. I went to the
bathroom, so I can 86 the heartbeats." We need all those things- nothing
replaces another, as much as alcoholics skip food in preference for drink, it
doesn't really work. We must eat, breathe, drink- each function has it's
specific requirements for intake and out go, there's some specific fluid or
solid associated with each. Ultimately, everything we eat and drink gets
broken down into nutrients and waste, gets mixed with air and used in the
building of blood.
Vampires are dead. Nothing works. Maybe its fun to discuss Janette having a
period for 50 yrs, but the truth is, she has nothing. They can't process
food, eliminate wastes, reproduce themselves (they can, but only indirectly
by causing another's death). Nick's body doesn't know what to make of those
fries. His stomach can't break them down into nutrients. He can't take an
iron supplement to build his blood- because IT ISN'T HIS blood. He's taken
it in whole form from another person (or cow). He sweats blood, he cries
blood, maybe he even urinates blood. When he uses it up, he has to get more.
He doesn't have alot of different, specific fluids and functions in his
body. He has one general, all purpose fluid and only one specific need-
blood.
Nat can try from here to eternity to get him aclimated to food, to tea, to
protein drinks. I don't believe for a moment that he (or any of them, Human
Factor be damned) can ever regain mortality. That's like saying that I'll
become a cat if I eat enough Fancy Feast! Maybe I'll get sick to my stomach,
maybe I'll get used to it, but I ain't ever gonna be no cat!
Nick's not a stubborn or difficult patient. When Nat says "It's the blood
that keeps you from coming over." she's dreaming. If that were true, then
why did she give him a Schanke transfusion at the end of Dark Knight? Why
didn't she give him a sandwich instead? She says "you would have STARVED to
death" not "you would have become anemic." Mortals don't get blood
transfusions because they're hungry. She gets mad at him because he keeps
drinking blood, but that's all he can drink. She has many choices- she can
give up soda in favor of juice, she can quit coffee and switch to herbal tea.
He's got to have blood. It's the only thing his body can process. She
thinks that when he becomes mortal, they'll get married and have a few kids,
that internal organs dead for 800 yrs will suddenly start to work as if
they've never had an interruption. She's wrong.

I have always found LaCroix to be a fascinating character, and I love
to listen to his radio monologues. As I read Lisa's comment about him
being heavy-handed with Nick, it reminded me once again of the scene
in "Father's Day, near the end of the episode, when LC and Nick are at
the police station. LC picks up Schanke's essay on "What is a
Father?", which Schanke is writing for his daughter's school
assignment. LC reads off Schanke's list of things that a good father
gives to his child, and then Nick says "He left out Freedom", to which
LC replies "So would I."
It occurs to me sometimes when I see LC and Nick together that the two
of them could have a comrade-like relationship if LC could let go of
Nick and learn to put some value on the qualities that make Nick an
individual. LaCroix has spent centuries chasing Nick, trying to force
him to stay with the fold, which just makes Nick run away that much
faster. A good parent wants his or her children to be happy and to
have a sense of self-value, but LC typically seems to be more focused
on his own personal wants and needs. LaCroix might actually have had
Nick as a willing companion through time if he had been able to
lighten up and let Nick develop like any child develops as it moves
toward independence from its parent. A parent can only mold and shape
a child for a certain length of time, and then it's time to let go.
As intelligent and insightful as he is about other things, it amazes
me that LaCroix doesn't catch on to this more consistently.

Well, this would require quite a change of heart and thinking on
LaCroix's part. If we'd gotten a 4th season, who knows? LaCroix
might have evolved somewhat, and become more of a partner and less of
a marauder where Nick was concerned. He did seem to be moving more
quietly this way during the 3rd season.

Just had to toss my hat into the ring tonight, I guess. I think I
have more Nick&NatPacker tendencies myself, so I hope the Cousins
won't clobber me.

The first new episode will air in about 15 minutes on FOX here in
Denver, and I'm staying up to watch instead of taping it. Been
waiting all week for this!

Subject: Re: What still works? (Was: Why French fries...)

This is a reply to Prop Guy's very comprehensive post of 04/28:

I, too have always had a problem with how Nat perceives vampirism. I agree
that it is not comparable to an eating disorder or to alcoholism. I agree
that, all show aside, Nick probably can't process any other food besides blood.

If, as Natalie theorizes, vampirism is a "blood-borne mutation", then *part*
of that mutation has got to be the change in organs to accept and process
blood. Changing those back (setting aside the question of whether or not
it's possible), is not simply a question of changing what goes in. Nat
seems to know (The Fix, for example) that something more than just getting
Nick off blood is needed.

Personally, I think Nat is shooting herself in the foot by ignoring the
"magical" aspect of vampirism. DEFN: ANY SUFFICIENTLY ADVANCED SCIENCE
WILL BE INDISTINGUISABLE FROM MAGIC (Arthur C. Clarke). Our present science
-- and certainly what's available to Nat in a coroner's office and forensics
lab -- is not yet advanced enough to figure out how a virus can change a
human being the way vampirism does. No aging, rapid healing, increased
strength, psionics (flight, hypnotism, some telepathy), sun-sensitivity --
there's a lot more to being a vampire than simply drinking blood!

I do have to disagree though, about the "dead" part. Everything in the FK
universe has shown us that vampires are *not dead*. Death, as a matter of
fact, is the critical point of the "bringing over" process -- the intended
vampire-to-be must *not* die during it. Vampires are alive -- not in the
same way mortals are alive, but alive nonetheless. They breathe, their
hearts beat, they need food and sleep -- sounds alive to me.

One of my problems (and a question) is about the fact that vampires in the
FK universe seem to cry, sweat and "etc" blood. Quite frankly, unless you
are drinking nothing but packed red cells, you are taking in a fair amount
of plain water, folks. I would think that, if the vampire body is using the
blood as it's main "power source", then, like mortals, there's going to be
some waste water. I think that vampires don't perspire much (they don't
need the temperature regulation like we do), but tears and "etc." really
should be water, not blood based. This is not only a lot easier on the
sheets <G>, but is logical in the fact that this would be the easiest way to
get rid of the small amount of waste products vampires actually produce (I
suspect that this would be mostly through the pores, by the way. Vampires
are a very efficient biological engine; no need to waste energy on that
elaborate excretory system for what little is produced).

Finally, Prop Guy says about Nat:
>She thinks that when he becomes mortal, they'll get married and have
>a few kids, that internal organs dead for 800 yrs will suddenly start
>to work as if they've never had an interruption. She's wrong.
No, she simply contradicts herself! If this isn't a belief in *magic*, I
don't know what is!!<G>

Is there a different URL? I just checked the poll address and it wasn't
posted. I saw a list of the top 50 for the magazine, but that wasn't it
either.

I wouldn't dream of it! :-)

Subject: Help with fiction/CD comment

Forgive me for an off-subject post, however I need some help with some
fiction I'm working on. I'm in the process of putting together a synopsis
and 1st chapter to submit for this year's Craft of Writing Conference in
Dallas. The book will involve the main character's interaction with a
vampire and a group of people "using" this vampire to extend their lives. A
bit of a different approach which I'm not going to detail here. This is not
an FK story, but my thanks for some of the wonderful, thoughtful discussions
regarding the potential cause of vampirism and its effects which I have read
on the list, because some of my story idea generated from that! In any case,
my main character is suffering from a brain tumor, and I was hoping that some
of our medically oriented list folks could e-mail me off-list with info
regarding symptoms for this kind of malady. I'll tell you a bit more at that
point, and see if you can offer advice as to how my character will react at
certain stages as time passes. The story won't center on the illness, but
the illness is an important aspect of the character's responses -- or will be
when I know how to write about it more realistically.

Thanks so much for your help!

Sherri

Subject: forgot the CD comment!

Just wanted to add that I think the idea of a piano CD by GWD would be great.
Perhaps someone going to the fan gathering in June should take a list of
names from the FK lists of people who would like to see Ger do this. He
seems to enjoy doing the audio-books (which are wonderful), and perhaps with
encouragement we could get him to at least think about a music CD.

I've ordered Fred Mollin's CD and am eager to hear it after reading the
glowing accounts on the list!

You might try The Vampire Files by P.N. Elrod (series of 6, I think)
She also has another series that starts with a book called "RED
           DEATH".

"BLOODWAR"- Book #1 in Masquerade of the Red Death Trilogy by
             Robert Weinberg (another series)

           "KINDRED" - by John Gideon

Happy reading!
