But might it have been? Given that we have no evidence it *was*,
*might* it have been? Pondering the wording of the dialogue in AMPH's
flashbacks, where LC speaks to Selene about "your daughter," I have the
impression that not only was Divia illegitimate, her relationship to LC was
not public knowledge, and thus it's unlikely her name reflected LC's... On
the other hand, that was LC's home, with his bust on display; Selene refers
to "*my* guests," and LC seems ready to greet Divia publically and
affectionately... And we know how LC likes to claim that which is his!

I'll grant that Vachon has a need for community (which I think is a
carryover from his status as Janette's replacement) but I'm not sure the
feelings can really be classified as "paternal." From HoD, particularly the
way Nick felt it necessary to point out that Vachon would be responsible for
Urs if she was behind the murder, I got the impression that Vachon has been a
very... loose... master. That has advantages, of course (ask Nick and
Janette), but it also has disadvantages (ask those Nick's brought across).

Isn't it weird that Cousin Tippi and Lady Amy are the ones discussing this?
:) Have the Vaqueras already settled the issue on Apache's loop? :)

Um... Amy... <g>

According to someone who owns a copy of the script, that wasn't a private house.
It was a Roman brothel, and Selene was the Madame. Lucius *may* very well
have been her patron, however. It was the custom for Romans who freed slaves
(and Selene could very well have been a war-captive; it would have been quite
in keeping with custom for him to take a captured woman of good family as his
slave-mistress, then free her later) to set them up in business or otherwise
provide for them. In fact, it was considered incredibly gauche *not* to do
so....

And if he was her Patron, that would explain the bust. It was, in effect, a
public warning that she was Under His Protection, and you messed with her or her
girls at your peril. <g>

Just MHO on the subject, of course... :)

re People who can't tell the character from the actor.

Some years ago, I was backstage at a con, waiting for a costume contest to
start. The Guest was there, too (he was the judge). Some people went to talk
to him, since he was right there. One of the contestants was in the guise of
the mother of the illegitimate son of a character this actor had played
*once,* many years earlier, as a guest performer on another show (she had a
doll version of this "son" with her). (Note: the "mother" and "son" were
inventions of the contestant). She started talking to the actor, *in
character,* berating him for leaving her alone with the kid. The poor man
looked very bewildered.

Scary stuff.

This is a fair assessment. We know, from the Canadian version of "Dark
Knight," that Nick's angst began almost immediately after he came across --
"I want to go back." And we know, from innumerable flashbacks, that even at
his most vampiric, Nick would feel guilty as soon as the blood lust subsided.

Of course, for around six-hundred years, he rarely hesitated to give in to
that blood lust. It may have been, in part, because he didn't have the
strength or experience to control it, which would be an additional angst
factor, but we have also seen him reveling in his powers and, at least once,
his needs.

But I would like to suggest an additional significance of the opening
voiceover, if we take the words to be LaCroix's... "Now he wants to be mortal
again," LC says, with a hint of the long-suffering exasperation Janette
expressed when she called Nick "an eternal *boy*" in "The Fix". LC sees Nick
as, well, wishy-washy.

Nick, of course, sees everything as *forever*. He expected Janette to be
with him forever (PotM), and then he expected them to be apart forever. That
always seems to be his attitude in his relationships, and because his
impatience has often made him frustrated and restless -- changing his mind to
a new thing that he sincerely believes will be forever -- he has, instead of
demonstrating the power and virtue of his quest, continued to give LC all the
reason he needs to believe that this is just some kind of adolescent phase.

Ummmm.... I've been being serious here -- I'm almost always serious -- but,
uh, has *ALL* the silliness moved over to SKL? Where I'm not, of course...
We can still have *some* silliness here, can't we? Please? :)

Nope! I for, one, am just sitting back and basking in the (moonlight!) glow.
My legs were getting tired from leaping to Vachon's defense elsewhere, you
see...

Vachon does have some sort of protective instinct, but I'd say it's a pretty
small one. While he hasn't abandoned a childe made my mistake (unlike OTHER
vamps I could mention... ;-) ), Javier seems more like Janette (a group
groupie??). He clearly likes hanging around with other vampires, and is
capable (ala Screed) of forming long-lasting friendships with them. Yep, he
*was* the leader of that little threesome, but look at the alternatives...
neither Urs nor Screed is/was exactly a ball of fire in the responsibility,
leadership, or energy department. Basically, they didn't *want* they job...

OTOH, if it's not out of a sense of parental responsibility, I've no clue as
to why he'd let Urs stay with him for so long. Poor little victim Urs! She's
strong, pretty, healthy, and for all purposes immortal. That's not enough,
tho, and so she's apparently spent the last hundred years or so bitching
about what a miserable life Vachon gave her.
Babe! Get over it! If (un)life's too much, take a walk in the sun... Or else
join Nick in the Mortal Wannabe Club. Membership keeps expanding... See your

Hi all,

I spoke to my shirt vendor to ask about the Forever Knightie sweatshirts
(they were being printed today, ship out today or Monday - thanks for your
patience) and he mentioned that they're doing a show in June called Promax.
It's a trade show for all the marketing people in the broadcast industry,
network affiliates and syndicated stations. He ordered an extra shirt and
is going to display it in his booth to give FK a little promo. He'll also
display a few bags. Yes, this is an example of the work they do and it's to
get these broadcasters to use their services, but FK is going to be one of
the featured items.

Pretty cool, huh? I didn't even ask him to do this, he just did it on his
own. Hmmm, he's also familiar with Due South (as opposed to FK, which he
didn't know). Wonder if he'll help with the effort to renew that!

The Chat Powers-That-Be at Prodigy put an official transcript of Ger's

downloaded it and it doesn't *say* anything about being copyrighted, so
I'll continue my offer to e-mail it to anyone who contacts me *off-list*
and puts the word CHAT in capital letters in the subject line.

Note: If I've already sent you an incomplete log, I'll mail you this
new version automatically -- you don't have to ask again! :^)

And for a while, anyway, the log will be available through my web page
at:

  http://assets.wharton.upenn.edu/~percy91/obsess.html

I will assume this is OK with Prodigy since they didn't put a copyright
notice on the chat log. If Prodigy tells me to cease and desist, however,
the link will disappear.

I'm sending a copy to Mr. Happy, a.k.a. Frederic, so that he can update
his web page with the official chat log as well. His page is at:

  http://mtl.net/solidarite/mrhappy

I think his copy will be updated soon!

Don't forget, the webless or web-challenged can get a copy by e-mailing
me *off-list* and putting the word CHAT in capital letters in the subject
line. And if you got the incomplete log from me, you'll automatically
get the official transcript! No need to ask again!

Your wonderful. Tulsa is about 93 miles from OKC. I went to the bomb site the

I don't think it's been established that Vachon is Screed's master. Maybe
Screed's master just disappeared also. Urs was abandoned by her father.
Tracy, whose parents are alive, appears to have pretty severe problems with her

behold, I found a group in Dallas who are in the same boat we are, and are
doing the same thing. I sent a message to one of the page owners, and he's
agreed to join forces. The web page is at http://www.tk.org/scifi2tci/, so
if you have access, check it out. Mail the owners (I'll get their addresses

Thanks to Alora, I now know why the list has been so serious, so stuffy,
so silent these past several days. I know where the laughter's gone. And I
hadn't realized how much I'd missed it, because I am so inherently serious
and stuffy myself (though silence is beyond my abilities, I'm afraid...).
After making three silly blunders on list in the past two days, I was
going to experiment with that "alternative lifestyle" known as Lurking in
an attempt to regain credibility... Until I realized that not one of my
blunders had been lovingly mocked... No one is playing. At *all.*

Unfunny as I am, here is my best attempt at a game. :)

Subject: more wardrobe

Before anyone gets flipped out over the Caftan issue, let me clarify: I
think GWD is one of the most handsome men in the world, but all bodies have
their flaws and a good costumer knows how to package things for the best.
I've heard that GWD himself has said a few humble things about his body-
lack of muscle tone, etc. But that's not the point.
When I first stumbled across the show (STF) what stopped me from flipping
channels further was how absolutely gorgeous I thought this man was and in a
completely non-boring, non-American way.
You ever watch an Italian movie and the hero has a big nose or he's not all
pumped up or he's over 40 but still, he's just stunning? And you know that
in Hollywood, he'd be relegated to character parts. Well, the first time you
see FK, you know that it's not filmed here in the USA. The faces are just
too interesting, nobody looks like a model, Natalie's a bit overweight, Nick
is not a pretty boy but a darn handsome man. The people are allowed to be
real, allowed to be characters.
I've been taking a Vampire film class for fun and the other night we got
around to discussing FK. Someone in the class (a woman!) said that FK never
grabbed her because she didn't find the lead Vampire sexy or attractive.
Hello????? She did think that the Vampires on Kindred were sexy enough,
however.
Now I haven't seen Kindred so I'm talking through my ear, but I can guess
that the actors are standard soap opera issue- pretty and fey, kind of
interchangable, the sort of uncomplicated (read: boring) beauty that is
derigeur in this country. So, please, please don't anybody think that I am
less than bewitched by GWD.

Subject: Oh Captain, My Captain

I loved Amanda Cohen and I miss her terribly. She was tough, strong, she
tolerated no nonsense and I think she had a neat sarcasm about her. She knew
that Nick is a loose cannon and she gave him some leeway, but she also knew
when to reel him in. And, she had a personal life. On television, they
rarely let a strong, professional woman have a personal life.
I got used to Stonetree, but in the beginning I kept thinking "What planet is
this guy on?" I think it had more to do with his vocal quality than with the
writing.
But I can't deal with Reese, especially in the early 3rd season episodes.
He's like a walking stereotype. Always at the water fountain, always
spouting on about serial killers or something. Always worried about keeping
Tracey safe so that he won't lose his job. "How come I'm the Captain and I
always get the dirtiest jobs?" Hey Reese, its BECAUSE you're the Captain!
Remember him gloating over the box of chocolates (bomb) in Black Budda,
telling a pretty disgusted Nick how it was necessary to suck up?
And how many times has he said to Nick, "Put out an APB" and Nick says "I
already have." He's really saying "I beat you to it, I think faster than
you, I'm better than you." Watching Black Budda, you can almost see that
Nick has no respect for this guy. Its gotten better, but even in NIQ when
Reese says to Nick "Did you ever think that guys like him (the criminal) are
the reason for guys like us?" And I'm thinking, "Oh no, not another stupid
soliloquy on how he doesn't understand the psycho-killer mind." Look at
Nick's reaction- he's like "Huh? What are you talking about?"
Contrast the clean, sharp, dignified authority of an Amanda Cohen with the
vision of this big, sweaty guy setting off a bomb because he couldn't wait to
wolf down the chocolates. Its a wonder Nick hasn't quit!

Yes, it's true. The silliness has migrated to a private e-mail loop. As
have so many things, great and small.

The Saturday Knight Live loop was intended to supplement FORKNI-L, to give
any listmembers who wanted to join an additional playground to frolic in.
But I've found that there are those on the SKL loop who are there because
they do not feel welcome on forkni-l. Have not felt welcome here for some
time.

This does not make me happy.

Yet there were those who were unhappy with the state of the list even
before That Night, who felt there was too much trivial traffic and not
enough 'meat'. Some of whom left because *they* didn't feel welcome in the
conversations that were occuring on the lists.

Which group is right? Which group is wrong? If either? I don't know.

I've felt from the beginning that being an assistant listowner means much
more than nagging people about sig lengths or four-line quotes: it means
caring about the lists, and about the subscribers, every one of them. When
people are signing off the lists because they feel unwanted or because
they're just not enjoying themselves, it matters to me. When people are
unhappy, it matters to me. I wouldn't be doing this job if I didn't care,
deeply and sincerely, about the lists and their members and the futures of
all parties concerned.

The FORKNI list is growing, changing and evolving with each new list
member. It has to grow, it has to change; the alternative is stagnation
and death. To say that "the list is not what it used to be" and demand
that it return to the good ol' days is to close the door on the future, and
this must not happen.

On the other hand, if the list is to avoid utter chaos as it evolves,
certain standards must be adhered to. Quote and sig length rules. Staying
on-topic. Keeping private comments in private e-mail, keeping one's posts
to a reasonable length and number. Showing respect for others' opinions,
and for the traditions of the lists. These are reasonable things to
expect.

But there should be a certain amount of silliness. Of mirth. Of sly
mischief and jollity. Of off-topic mayhem. Otherwise, what is the point?

When there is a private e-mail loop for every subject, when each little
splinter group has its own venue for conversation... that conversation is
lost to the rest of the FORKNI group. And that's sad.

On the other hand, when every conversation takes place on forkni, there are
those who are too swamped in mail to bother with any of it, and must
abandon the discussions altogether. And that's sad, too.

What's the solution? I honestly don't know. I wish I did.

All I know for certain is that a lot of people are unhappy, and that makes
*me* unhappy, and there is no reason on earth why I should be unhappy when
I am ostensibly leaving in less than three days for Toronto...

I always thought we were family, here. I would hate to be wrong about
that.

Amen to that! I work for the Red Cross, and it's really amazing to see
people just come out of the woodwork when tragedy strikes. I'm in
California, and we had school kids all over donating their pennies, dimes,
and quarters (as well as their teddybears) to help other kids they'd never met.

To make this list related: for the next War, I've got the Red Cross

looks like a healthy woman who does not buy into body-size crap designed
to keep women from using their energies on truely important issues. Now,
onto your other points--yes, FK's actors are unique--they can actually
act. I believe that actors can be considered serious about the craft of
acting--i.e. actors, not stars--if they work or have worked in live
theatre. The skills are unmistakeable. Forgive me, I am not addressing
the main thrust of your comments--GWD is a good-looking guy.

Subject: Oklahoma City-We Remember

One year ago, on April 19,1995 was the
first day of the rest of our lives. For some
of those close to us, it was the last. As we
struggle to make sense of what this event
means to our lives, it is as important now
as it was then, to come together and offer
our support and love to those in need. On
this day we mourn the loss of innocence
that was brutally taken away. In retaliation,
remember. Remember the children, the
parents, the brothers and sisters, the
daughters and sons. Tell those you care
about you love them. Say a prayer for
those alone. No matter how you choose
to show it,
                Always Remember.

The bombing in Oklahomam City has
changed many lives. I just wanted to
say thank you to everyone on this list
for providing a place to go to get away
for awhile. There has been lately minor
disagreements that have in a small way,
threatened the fun of the list. Sometime
today, take a moment to be thankful
for what we do have-friends who
can make us smile and respect
our opinions, even if they don't
always agree. We've joked often
about the lists taking over our lives. I
am just thankful I have the security
and the opportunity to be able to participate
in something like FORKNI-L. Thank you.
