I don't think so, coz I remember it too. Maybe you went on a "potty break"
at that time? Or, it's possible it was cut for commercial time??

Actually, no I don't think so. I think Janette "drained him" but not in the
way you mention. And afterwards LaCroix comes into the room and Nick sits up
and - the rest is history. But she didn't bite him. And thus, another
continuity problem is born....

I think this would have to go back to continuity, because its not that easy
to get hired by a PD either and a lot of that work is done behind the
scenes. No offense, but weeding out people who you give a gun too is right
up there with people you hand a "knife" to. <G>

Yes, Janette's line about not being able to stop in time *was* in the Canadian
version. Yet another example of missing out on some *really* good stuff (like
Nick's comments on armour and 'potty breaks' in Dark Knight <g>) if you only
have the American broadcasts of first season.

Hi Dotti! You're magical! Because, the first scene where Nick goes to
the Raven to talk to Janette is in the Canadian cuts, not the American
ones; the second scene, where he goes to find Richard and Janette says
"you of all people know how carefully this power must be controlled" is
the only Janette scene in the American version of that episode.

That first scene is pretty long, actually, and Janette is pretty annoyed
at Nick for interrupting her because she's in the middle of a conquest of
a very nice looking person and because Nick is once again not paying
attention to the reality of the responsibility of being someone's
"master."

Cynthia, who still thinks it's something in the water.

Okay, this is about the bathing in medieval times thread... I remember
learning that the church discouraged bathing, to the point that people
were given a garment at birth that they were never to take off, and that
once they were grown was impossible to take off (can't remember what it
was called) just to discourage bathing. As I understood it, the church
considered bathing a sign of vanity and arrogance. Or maybe that was
from an even earlier time period...I'm not sure.

Hi all,
Last night was the first ever get-together of the Arizona Crusaders for
the Knight <g>! Kathy, Bridget, Marg R. and I, along with a neophyte fan, got
together for dinner at a local restaurant. Almost the first thing that
happened was the waitress slipped and dumped a couple of glasses of iced tea
down Kathy's back.... ::shiver:: The weather wasn't too cold by East Coast
standards, but by AZ standards, it was windy and *Very* cool, and we were
sitting on the patio. We ended up getting our drinks for free because of
that!
After dinner, we stopped at the grocery store, picked up some soda and
some wine and then headed over to Bridget's house to watch videos! Bridget's
husband decided to leave... my husband said "smart man" when I told him that
later. ;) We had a couple of bottles of Ribena available, so we toasted our
favorite Vamps with some. Sad to say (maybe), we all liked it! We did end
up diluting it the rest of the night, as it's a bit much for major
consumption. We had fun and hope to do it again soon, at least for "Last
Knight" if not sooner! What follows is a quote list, with episodes we're
watching in { }.
                          Enjoy!

around the Houston area. I'm so jealous of those actually in Toronto. I

I got hooked on FK during the 3rd season and have been trying to catch up. I
had seen a few 2nd season episodes before I really got into it. I am
interested in acquiring episodes "new" to me. If you are willing to help me
please, please, please, please, (enough groveling yet?) please let me know.

As a (cough, cough) relative newbie to the list I am still searching for a
faction. Those wanting to woo me to the faction of their choice please do so
and help me with this dilemma. So far I am leaning towards being a Forever
Knightie but the purple thong thread has me thinking too! Oh! A FAQ would be
appreciated too.

Also, the wishing crane project, is it over yet? I have some done and was
wondering if its too late.

Okay, okay, I'm going back to lurking now.

Subject: Re: What the heck is "Hand"?

I've been wondering about this too, because the people referring to
"hand" seem to be talking about at least two different creatures. If I
recall correctly, the original reference was to the flying glove in the
Beatles' animated film *Yellow Submarine*--the idea being that LC would
"borrow" the glove as a weapon of vengeance and destruction from the
Chief Blue Meanie. (I thought this was an especially vivid image--in the
film, the Flying Glove gets into a battle with the John Lennon character,
who defeats the Glove by singing "All You Need Is Love". . . but then we
all know that didn't *really* work, right?) But then somehow the hand from
*The Addams Family* came into the picture, and this hand, to me, isn't
nearly as scary or ominous as the Flying Blue Glove that terrorizes
Pepperland. So . . . which hand is it?

By the way, Robert Smith, singer/songwriter of The Cure, and a member of
Siouxsie and the Banshees formed a band called The Glove and made an album
titled *Blue Sunshine*. The album has a picture of the Glove flying in a
spiral with a trail of casualties streaming out behind it . . . (like
Sharon Tate, John Lennon, John Belushi, Bruce Lee . . .). Anyway, ENOUGH!

Regarding bathing: Diane E. said basically that Medieval people DID
bathe.

I say: Well, then they musta given up during the plagues because there
are numerous accounts of people in the 1600's refusing to bathe because
they believed it would be harmful. Consequently, a lot more people died
of the plague! Plus, when Queen Liz the first died, she had ober 1 INCH
of makeup encrusted on her face. Barber-surgeons and religious leaders
advised against bathing.

ObFK: All this talk of body odor has made me wonder, in my usually
demented way, whether or not our FK vamps must use deodorant? A

shower? Why don't *I* remember any dewey wet Vachon scenes?!

Therefore, I have added Hand to my arsenal, along with my trusty

However, despite this fact, I am still not sure myself what "Hand" is.

Subject: Why doesn't Nick go to med school?

As far as we know, he was convinced until he met Natalie that his
condition wasn't physical. The failure of the quack in The Fix flashbacks
probably turned his mind away from any idea of a medical cure.

Besides, remember the lines in OtL? (This is from memory and I may be
quoting something CBS cut, but the gist is accurate.)

Nick: Evil is a metaphysical condition.

Nat: No, no -- you're not evil. Besides, your condition *is* a physical
one.

Then remember later in the first season, I think in I Will Repay, when

Subject: intro and thanks

Hi all. I am a new third season fan. I have been getting the list for a month
or so now and thought it was time to delurk and say hi.
I want to say a thank you to all who have put so much time and effort into the
homepages, timelines, episode guide ,wavs etc. It has made it so much easier to
come up to speed on where the series has been. I have also been incredibly
impressed by the classy way that the SOS FK campaign and this list is run.
Kudos to everyone involved.
Now for a bit of begging. Although I'm one of the lucky few that actually
gets the SFC (ducking). I don't think I can wait til Sept to see those 1st and
2nd season eps I keep hearing so much about. I would be grateful if anyone would
lend me some tapes.

Subject: AZ Party - addition

Hey all! As Beth said it was a great party! We started off that we
were supposed to just meet for dinner. However, we ended up having a
full-blown party. It was funny when we were in the store looking for
something to go with the Ribena. The neophyte fan and I decided we wanted
something other than soda. We met the rest back near the check out
stands. I covered the label to the bottle, held it up, and told them that
we decided on cow's blood! We all had a good laugh. It was a bottle of
Merlot - I remembered someone on the list saying that it was really good.

Funny things with the Ribena - did you all know that they package Ribena
in a bottle like its wine with a foil wrapper? On top of this, the clerk
in the store where I bought it put it into a brown paper bag as if it was
wine too! I loved the facial expressions when the Ribena was being poured!
Like, "are we going to actually drink this thick stuff? We looked into our
glasses and looked at each other. I smelled it first (smells like grape
juice). Believe or not - You all gotta try Ribena! It's good! Tastes
good mixed with Merlot too!

Thanks Bridget for the great Tape Fest at your place!!!!!!!
Thanks all for coming to the party!!! You are all great!

If you've never been to an FK party - you gotta have one! It's great fun!

Hey AZ Crusaders! Are we still getting together on April 26th? Let me
know! I'm all for it!

Subject: FK Vampires Immoral/Evil/Neither?

From: Pam Maine <mstangel@u.......>

>>LC=immoral/_evil_ (does rotten things just
'cause they're fun), Janette=amoral (does whatever's best for Janette),
Nick=moral (sometimes does rotten things, but angsts about them
afterwards).<<

I think what we have to consider, as Janette stated in "Partners of the
Month", that "when we leave the day behind we take on a new set of rules."
Meaning that mortal standards of morality no longer apply to vampires, at
least in their eyes. So LaCroix and Janette are not amoral or even evil (if
LaCroix was that bad, I think the Enforcers would have taken care of him long
ago.) They are living by *their* new set of standards, i.e. to keep the Code
and beyond that, do as you please. Nick, because he's locked into a mortal's
code of morality, is the one who is "amoral" when he strays from that
morality. He may have submitted to living as Janette and LaCroix do at one
time, but now at least he has reverted to the old medieval Church's views on
morality and redemption. Or has he? Nick, because of his obvious
inconsistencies, may be the most immoral of the three vampires. His angsting
doesn't seem to keep him from (omitting spoiler here), for one thing. And
this is a Knightie (albeit a Dark Knightie) saying this.

I think we all know how imperfect Nick is - it's part of his charm, I guess.

I guess the eternal question is (for eternal champions??):
Is a person immoral when they act counter to a society's morals or their own
system of morality? If the latter, what I've said above applies. If the
former, then I guess what Pam and others say about LaCroix and Janette
applies. Just a matter of perspective, is all.

  > What is Nick's blood type?
It's whatever Schanke's was... or with vampires it doesn't matter who
you get a conventional transfusion from. I think Schanke's was AB- or
AB+, I'm not sure which. AB something, I'm reasonably sure.<<

Schanke is/was (depending on which season you're in - this writer will say
*is*) A-negative. And of course, as others have stated, a vampire will not
have their own personal blood type anymore - would they have any of their
original blood left? I don't think so. Unless something in them converts
the blood they ingest...

>>Now, damn near all these docs had to be at least 40, so
they may have been all set in their ways, too, I dunno. Anyway<<

Ahem. If this 43-year old was set in her ways, I doubt I'd be on this list!
I firmly believe that age has NOTHING to do with being set in one's ways.
In fact, as a former teacher, I can tell you that it's amazing how many
7-year olds (just an example, any age will do) are set in their ways already.
Open-mindedness has little to do with age, I assure you. :D

scene with Nick and Natalie at the Raven "I'll show her what backsliding

eps are besides that one! (And would someone PLEASE tell me how to become a
Dark Knighie, sheesh was that EP good!!)<<

Glad to oblige!

I'm a Dark Knightie because I like Nick dark, sexy and dangerous and because
I also believe he wouldn't last a day as a mortal. The ease in which and
the frequency of which he uses his powers tells me he really likes being a
vampire - he just doesn't want his soul to be damned. He thinks they're the
same thing, unfortunately. The second season episode, "Near Death", while
not a Dark Knightie episode per se, I believe supports this reasoning that
Nick is more interested in redemption than mortality.

Other great Dark Knightie episodes: (sorry - not in order of season)
"Dark Knight" - lots of it here
"Dance By the Light of the Moon" (He is one dangerous and sexy boy!)
"Feeding the Beast" - big time Dark Nick ep!
"Last Act" - featuring vampire sex and that great Schanke line: "Think of the
paperwork if you drop him!"
"Crazy Love" - more on the edge stuff and vampire sex
"Sons of Belial" - goes without saying!
"Outside the Lines" - okay, sounds crazy, I know, but there is a lot of Nick
body language that spells that delicious Nick danger and power
"Fever" - Nick nearly losing it in the morgue
"Killer Instinct" - Nick, caged!
"The Hunters"/"Hunted" - I always mix these two up - the episode where Nick
has to save Schanke from a hunter who learns that Nick's a vampire - when
Nick tries to hypnotise the hunter - whooo, boy!
"The Games Vampires Play" - my most favorite Dark Knightie episode of all!
And of course the flashbacks in "Fallen Idol"

I'm sure there's more - anyone else with a favorite Dark Knightie ep or
scene, please add to this!

Subject: Church and bathing

I'm sorry, but the idea that the church discouraged bathing is one of
those things everyone thinks they know, but which isn't true. It's based
on early church opposition to mixed bathing in late Roman baths, and
to the fact that medieval municipal baths had a reputation for being
part brothel and part convenient places for assignations.

Private bathing was never discouraged. There are medieval manuals for
attendants of nobles and kings, which include instructions for assisting
at the lord's bath.

Most monastic orders discouraged full scale baths for their members
as unnecessary luxury, but that doesn't mean they never washed. They
just didn't get into a tub. Ablutions were a regular part of the
monastic day.

Nor was there anything that I've ever encountered in the western church
about anything given at baptism that couldn't be taken off. In Russian
orthodoxy there is or was a baptismal cross, which was given at baptism
and which was never supposed to come off. In fact, there's a Russian
idiom for "you ought to be ashamed of yourself" which literally means
"you have no cross on." Could that be the origin of the one garment
idea?

As for body hair, Ovid has a line in his advice to a courtesan (who would
be a free woman) about keeping the "rank goat" out of one's armpits.

Oh, and medieval women of Fleur's status normally wore scents and used
scented things.

The part about blackened teeth is debatable, because Fleur is in the
time before the invention of modern refined sugars. In her day, sweetening
was with honey, and not usual. Medieval people did brush teeth with twigs.
(the Elizabethans, on the cusp of medieval/Renaissance, used hazel
twigs by preference.) Loss of teeth was usually due to inadequate calcium,
and wear from the meal-grinding methods in use at the time.

Subject: Queen Elizabeth's makeup

This happens to be the area of history I have my M.A. in, so I do know
what I'm talking about. Elizabeth I did not have make-up encrusted on
her face at her death on March 24, 1603. That white paste that is often
cited as Elizabethan makeup and which the producers of Elizabeth R used,
is actually the Elizabethan equivalent of a facial mask such as you can
buy today in a drugstore.

The recipe makes this clear.

There's also negative evidence that Elizabeth didn't normally wear this
stuff. The Venetian ambassador, new to his post near the end of Elizabeth's
reign, wrote a confidential description of the Queen to his government at
home. He said she had "hair of a color God never made." He also mentioned
her low-cut gown showing too much withered cleavage, and the fact that she
had lost enough teeth that he had trouble understanding her speech. A man
as candid as this would surely have mentioned an inch of white paste.

The teeth would be the result of too many sweets, probably, plus her age,
nearly 70. This was after the invention of modern sugar.
