Having watched the first two seasons (through the generosity of LL -
thanks so much!) and of course the third, I have always felt that LC used
every means, including sexuality, to demonstrate his power and dominance
over those around him. In one of the second season episodes, name
escapes me at the moment, apparently shortly after Nick was brought
across, Janette rises from feeding on a prostrate figure, Nick is closer
to the camera with blood dripping from his mouth. LC moves beside Nick,
Nick asks something to the effect of "What am I?", LC replies "My
protege", Nick says "Your slave" and LC reaches over to wipe the blood
from Nick's mouth and lick it from his finger. My impression was that LC
was non-verbally confirming the power he has over Nick.

Just my impression... back to lurking.

> be a work of art. And like much literature, it doesn't have to be realistic.

"AAAACK!" screams Amy in horror, coming to her computer straight from
a discussion of mimetic literary theory. :)
Picking up and reweaving dropped plot threads is my favorite thing
to do, and I am NEVER content to ignore or accept an error I can explain
away ("I'm a Knightie; I can rationalize anything"). Do I have a working
explanation for the notorious "Battle of Hastings" comment in "FitP"? Yes.
Do we need one? Maybe not, but *I* do.
Perhaps what I love most about FK is the creative intellectual
involvement it demands. HL's continuity is almost perfect; it doesn't
*need* me the way FK does. :) (cf. Janette: "I like it when you need me.")
On seeing someone say that the Baroness had been brought across by
Janette, I posted a hasty plea to any other "continuity police" out there.
Perhaps it was too hasty; let me make it clear that I adore problems
like this, because I adore solving them. Unfortunately, I have not seen
the episode in question, and thus had to ask someone else to do this one.
Diane E, I think it was, posted a wonderful explanation reconciling
the Baronness with Janette's "IWR" admission that she'd never been able
to "stop herself in time." Diane postulated that Janette had begun to
work <g> on the Baronness, but that LC had pulled her off and finished
the job himself, reprimanding her for her lack of control. I like this
explanation, and I'm adopting it, especially as it jibes with my current
pet theory, that LC never taught his children how to bring others across
properly. :)
There are many ways in which literature (including FK) does not have
to be realistic. Most have to do with form and genre. A mistake,
however, is always a mistake. In order to admire a work, I demand
internal consistency within the bounds of the established framework. And
I'm happy to provide it when the episodes don't. :)

Concerning FK writers, what you have to remember is that continuity was
never a prioirty with FK scripts and was discouraged so that the episodes
could be filmed and aired in any order. Yes, as fans we LIKE to have
continuity and don't see a lot of sense in working without it, but
television PTB aren't that keen on the idea. When you have a series in
which the production people are bonzo-gaga about continuity, consider
yourself blessed and mention how much you appreciate it frequently and with
chocolate.

That being said, you have to realize how a series like FK is made--in a
hurry. Scripts are assigned concurrently, so that often a writer is working
on a script at the same time as other writers are working on scripts before
and after their script. Writers seldom see the work of other writers until
after their script is turned in or, perhaps even until the episode airs,
assuming a writer has even watched more than one episode before they write a
script or will bother watching their episode or other episodes after they've
finished the job. If there's an obvious continuity problem like someone
blowing up the Caddie (I know, wishful thinking), they can catch it, but the
people on set are too busy finding their marks and making those pages into
film to catch little things. Not to mention those little boo-boos that
sneak in when on-set script changes are made, which can be the rewriting of
anything from one word in a line to an entire scene.

Script editors are usually assigned the job of keeping script and series
continuity if there isn't someone assigned for that particular purpose (and
on a show trying to keep budget costs down, one less body can mean more cash
for other things), but the script editor has a lot of other things to do.
Sadly, continuity slides.

We've seen occasional continuity in FK and, oddly enough, there was finally
an attempt this season to throw in those bits and pieces of shared past that
please us fans. The 1066 thing, by the way, WAS an error, and Jim Parriott
personally apologized for it in a post on AOL before the episode even aired.

We should be thankful for the writers who attempt to put continuity into
their work despite TPTB (thank you, Gillian, for mentioning that Natalie had
a cat when even Ger had forgotten about it) and can continue to amuse
ourselves by coming up with 'rational' explanations to explain these little
(and not-so-little) errors.

In that vein, below is a reposting of a top ten list regarding 1066 from
"Forward Into the Past."

Top 10 Reasons Nick Thought He Was At the Battle of Hastings in 1066:

10. He's a blonde.

 9. Someone told him he was there and he believed them.

 8. He's real sensitive about the age thing, has been lying about 1228, and
LaCroix goes along with it to keep him happy.

 7. He's <really> blonde.

 6. He was misinformed.

 5. He got Bill the Bastard (William the Conquerer <was>) confused with
Buffalo Bill (who came from sound parentage).

 4. Have you noticed just <how> blonde he is? We're talking
pigmentationally challenged, here.

 3. He confused 1066 and 1966 (there was this acid thing when he met Leary
at a speech in Hastings, Vermont . . . .).

 2. He's a brick with fangs (HAH! Bet you expected another blonde joke!)

 1. He's a blonde brick with fangs.

My apologies and sincere condolences to all natural and unnatural blondes
who might have taken offense at these remarks.

I was about to post a message like this before Lisa got to it. Seriously,
please just take it to private. This isn't my favorite subject for public
mail, and I only mentioned it as part of the "are vampyres real or not?"
debate. Before I posted it, only a few people knew about my vampyrity,
condition, delusion, whatever *you* call it. I'd really rather not tell
1000+ people every single detail of my medical life, psychological state,
home life, background, interests, sunburns, and beliefs. If anyone wishes
to discuss it further, I am PLEASED to do so in private. I'm glad others
show some interest in it. However, I will not be the subject of ridicule or
questions I consider too prying, nor will I agree to drink anyone's blood
(I'm not going to take a risk on AIDS or anything else), "bring anyone
across" (I'm not even sure it's possible), or anything I consider degrading.
Questions, and reasonable ones, only, please. Thank you.

Thanks again to lisa.

he can still return whenever he wants to... as soon as he's ready to accept
forgiveness. He's already repented.

Hey ya'll! Just decided to do another one of my rambles... Lets see...
Oh, Yah! I've been wondering, couldn't Nick go to medical school to
update himself on today's medical practices and then work on finding a
cure for himself? I'm getting kinda tired of watching him rely on
others to find his cure for him. He's a vampire, for gosh sakes! (Gosh,
who says Gosh anymore? Well, I guess I do, especially around the kids at
work.) Were was I? <April reads text above> Oh yah.. He's been searching
for his cure for centuries, but do we ever see him create theories
himself? No, we don't. We always see him rely on mortals to help him...
Well, that's all I'm going to say about that (for now). [Quiz time! What
movie did I paraphrase that line from?]

Oh, BTW... If anyone out there is archiving FK fan fiction, I hearby give
them permission to put mine in it. But could you e-mail me that you did?
I love seeing my name in 'lights' as it were. (Don't worry, it's just a
phase, I'll grow out of it... But then again, I'm a 20 year old kid...)

Does anyone know which list thought up the concept of the faction wars?
I'm in the middle of the 2nd FKFIC war, and that little question just
popped in my brain. And oh, did it hurt! :) (Cool! my first emotioncon

Subject: LaCroix's Family

*BAM!*
Yes, I have been struck by the wand of the posting fairy today.

I've often thought of why LaCroix would have kept Janette and Nick on
relatively tight leashes while his other 'converts' have been abandoned,
ignored, or left to their own devices. I think it's because he knows that
eternity is a long time and was looking for companions for the journey.

LaCroix has never been a real 'party' type, like Vachon, who has developed a
coterie of friends and offspring (his 'crew'), but would choose his
companions with care. Janette, of course, is the 'honey' (Yes, I know, she
is NOT) perfectly splendid bait, a predator in silk and satin, someone to
dote on, who'll remain beautiful and playful and <interesting>. As LaCroix
was meant to be the brains of the group and Janette the beauty, he needed
brawn--someone to watch his back in a fight, to hold up beams of buildings
as they collapsed around them, you know the drill. Who better than a
crusading knight who'd lost faith and was searching for a new center to his
universe?

Of course, Lacroix wouldn't settle for any dumb lummox. He looked for
someone with whom he could match wits, who would amuse as well as protect,
who'd be a lover and companion for Janette as well as an escort, and who, in
his own way, would be the perfect bait and predator simultaneously. What
LaCroix didn't count on was that Nick hadn't <quite> lost his faith and
still had a conscience. Rather than LaCroix filling the faithless void, he
just opened the breach a bit wider, giving Nick more room in which to store
his guilt and his indecision about who and what he was and wanted to be.

I think LaCroix gave Janette a short list and then let her choose from that.
As to why I think that happened, well, one of my conjectures is in "Kind
Soul," but that's an awfully large thing to read for one tiny reason. And,
if I ever get around to paying serious attention to it, look for a story
called, "Three of a Kind," sometime in future.

One of the stringest imperatives for we mortals is to procreate, so that we
leave something of ourselves behind when the darkness finally gets us. For
vampires, they can choose their friends AND their family. Being tied
together by blood takes on a whole new meaning and so definitions change.
It always made me wonder that they never followed up on what would be to me
a very logical thread--sibling rivalry. Janette seems happy enough to be
second best in LaCroix's eyes, but there must have been times when it became
just a <tad> annoying.

Folks seem to be looking for a Greek or Greek-like name for this
faction. How about Phoenix and Achilles? They had, how shall I put
this, a problematic relationship.

Thank you, Susan, for perpetuating a useful falsehood about Perkulators.
But I have to point out that while Natpackers may what to pring order out
of chaos, they are not very good at it... and in fact, of the Natpackers
*I* know, they generally *perfer* chaos.

Say it all together now:

Perkulators are harmless.
They are merely perky little pests, easily ignored.
Pay no attention to them.
Perkulators are harmless.

Thank you, and see you next war.

I agree totally. Schanke was a much better character as a whole than
Tracy, and I believe that Jon had a lot to do with that, and that he was
very comfortable in the role. He also had the ability (and the writers) to
make Schanke comicial with out making him a bafoon.

Tracy is an intirely different character. But more importantly she was
brought in at a bad time and given equally bad treatment by the writers.
She's probably the character who is most universally hated, with some
cause. But she is also the only character on the show the I feel has been
miss used the most consistantly. And that's saying a lot considering how
poorly the characters have been used in some episodes.

I like that. And the rebus puzzle. But to me it will always be
*fork-nye-el* which, said fast, is fork-nile, possibly alluding to an
Egyptian incarnation of one of our favorite uncles *or* for(k)-nye-el (a
kind of dedication to a shortened form of Nigel) *or* fork (picture fork)
nile (picture nile - what's a nile, you ask? I dunno. Make it up). Of
course, there's always the extended version - Fork-nite-le, which has to do
with a fork and a nightie that come from Eastern Europe or Russia, or a
Yiddishe nightie.

Nuff said. Good night (-L)

Well he has been a doctor before (during the Civil War and the name of the
ep escapes me at the moment - you know - the one with the photographer and
the enforcers...) but as for going to medical school these days...well, I
can't see him sticking with it.

and then promptly hit the road when it doesn't work out. To credit him, he's
given Nat a whole lot longer than anyone else we've seen him deal with.
*But* to be fair (I *must stop that whole to be fair thing. Very un-cousinly
.Shame on me), there's many years we haven't seen so *perhaps* he has tried
a longer term solution before and we just ahven't seen it. Bloody unlikely

across your interviewer...

It was completely unintentional. Much as I love the show, as
dedicated to the SOS-FK as I am, I do _not_ walk into job
interviews with the intention of proselytizing <vbg>.

The interview was winding down. She asked what kinds of books I
read, what movies I liked, what TV shows I watched.... I
started listing a few, and (note the YKYB...) FK was first of
about four. Job interviewers ask for such stuff to stall for
time, to try to make you somehow memorable or somesuch. They
never react unless you name something they watch too.

No. She stopped me at once and said, "What was that first one?"
I told her. "What's it about?" I gave her the 25-words-or-less
version-- [yeek! NATPE deja vu! ;-]. "When's it on?" I told
her.

She says she's gonna tape it. She "can't stand anyone knowing
about a tv show she doesn't" <g>.

She also plans to catch Due South (#2 - "Oh that's the one with
the mountie, right?") tonight.

I gave her the Merc page as one of my web-design references.

It's a first season episode; as far as I know we can discuss it here.
