Hey guys, I'm back! Midterms got over but my mailbox was overflowing from personal mail so I've only just now gone back on mail. I MISSED YOU GUYS!! I'll be quiet now. My VCR managed to go all wonky and only taped the last half our of the ep which aired on March 9 (Nova Scotia airdate). Would someone be able to help me out? Why? Because I have all these GREAT story ideas, but no time (and admittedly little skill) to write them. While several of my ideas involve crossovers (I have one generic xover generator concept that can applied to any fandom), some are simply based on my personal knowledge of Toronto and its environs. Although I'm sure that some of my ideas have already been used in fanfic, I haven't seen any of them posted on the list or in the archives YET (feel free to point me to the ones I missed). In fact, it has been a long time since I have seen any new STORY challenges issued, let alone answered. In order to reduce the chaos potential of this idea, I would like to propose some suggestions. (These are strictly voluntary, of course, but I think you'll find your work will go more smoothly if you follow them.) 1. The subject line of all challenge stories should begin with the word "CHALLENGE: " (all caps followed by a colon and one space). The remainder of the subject can be EITHER the challenge name OR the story title OR (if there is room) both of them in that order. 2. If the answer to a challenge is a multipart story, please number the parts in the subject, and write "To be continued ..." on the last line (or "Please continue ..." if you want someone else to finish the story). I recommend that you post only one part per day so that the parts won't be received out of order. 3. Read my "FKFIC-L Formatting suggestions" post based on the FK FAQ file (I'll e-mail it to you privately if you missed it). I am perfectly willing to beta read any challenge answers to correct formatting problems before you post them to the list, but I'd prefer to get them as file attachments rather than included message text (making them easier to correct and return to you). 4. If your post is a direct sequel from another author's post, please identify the original post by author and subject at the top of the message text. Also list any episode or fanfic references you think may be needed to understand your story. Here are a few of my challenge ideas. They are divided into xover and non-xover categories, although you can add xover elements to non-xover stories at your discretion. (These also qualify as my-favorite-episodes- that-were-never-made.) "Medieval Knight" - (non-xover) A murder by sword has occurred in the dressing room at the "Medieval Times" dinner and tournament facility in Toronto. Det. Nick Knight has been called in to investigate. The story must contain at least one sword fight between Nick and the villain. (Undercover work optional.) (NOTE: There are several "Medieval Times" restaurants scattered around the U.S. besides the one in Toronto [e-mail me for the information phone numbers] which provide a three course banquet (fixed menu) at a re-creation of an 11th century tournament, including feats of horsemanship, jousting, sword fighting and other games at a simulated medieval castle. The audience gets to cheer their own knight [and his allies] and boo his enemies, and a lady from the audience is chosen by the champion to be his "Queen of Love and Beauty".) Possible motive: "He knew too much" - the victim discovered some criminal activity at the show (smuggling valuable artifacts in [or as] props or cheap reproductions for the gift shop, "horse crimes" involving the rare and valuable Andalusian stallions used in the show [think thoroughbreds], etc.), and was silenced. Possible motive: "Crime of passion" - the motive was personal, and the weapon was one of opportunity. A fertile ground for red herrings. For plots, think murder mysteries at a theater or a circus - "Medieval Times" combines elements of both. Possible motive: "There can be only one" - unavoidable HL xover. Can be combined with either of the above motives. Possible Scenes: Nick (as Nat's guest) moves the food from his plate to Nat's during the "Druid's Blessing" when the lights are dimmed (a teaser to the body's discovery), Nick plays with sword at gift shop (with flashbacks), Nick (undercover) chooses Nat as his "Queen of Love and Beauty", Nick recognizes something from his past (sword, armor, family crest, etc.) among the souvenirs or props, Nat secretly orders the "de Brabant" coat-of-arms and family history from "Historical Research Center" booth for Nick's birthday. "Spellbound Knight" - (non-xover) There is a fairly large Wiccan community in the Toronto area that (in Nick's world) would certainly be aware of the vampires in their midst. Now, members of a local coven are being murdered in bizarre ways that point to a supernatural explanation. Why did they ask that Nick be assigned this case? How does Tracy (a lapsed Catholic) deal with an pagan religion? Where did Nat meet the coven members before? And what are the new ingredients in her "protein shakes"? "Everybody's a Critic" - (non-xover) Write a book review for "Out of the Coffin: One Vampire's Journey into the Light" by (?). "He Walked Around the Caddy" - (non-xover) Nick suddenly finds himself in parallel world where he and his friends have never existed - except as television characters in a recently cancelled series. How does he get home (or even survive)? [NOTE: the title is borrowed from H. Beam Piper's "He Walked Around the Horses", a parallel world story based on a true incident, the disappearance of British diplomat Benjamin Bathurst outside a Prussian inn. Since this happened on November 25, 1809, Nick might very well have memories of the event.] Feel free to rescue Nick yourself. "(S)He Walked Around the (?)" - (non-xover) A fan or cast member of FK suddenly finds him/herself in a parallel world where the show is real. How does (s)he get home (or even survive in a world with vampires)? [NOTE: there are no fan factions in this world, and the characters would be shocked to discover people who know their secrets, or strangers who look like them. See the NOTE in the previous challenge for further information.] Feel free to include yourself, but please play the situation seriously (if you can't do something here, you couldn't do it there). "The Exchange Program" - (non-xover) Nick and Ger switch places. See last two challenges for ideas. [NOTE: this would work as well for any other cast/character combination.] I'm sure this has been done before, but I've never seen it myself, and the idea is too general to copyright. "Nat's Deja Vu" - (non-xover) Another of Nat's "patients" wakes up, and this time she's ready. But how do you handle an abandoned (and thirsty) fledgling? Obvious fanfic, but I've never seen it done. "A Matter of Trust" - (non-xover) Nat reads a book about coroner seduced by a vampire as part of a plot to take control of a small city. In it, a convenient psychopath is hypnotized to kill a couple of cops (friends of the coroner) on the verge of discovering their secret as part of an atrocity killing many innocent bystanders. Now Nat has to decide if life has imitated art (or vice versa). "Keystone/Threshold - The Unlimited Xover (T.U.X.)" "No one knows who built these gateways between worlds, the half teardrop shaped crystaline *keystones* that open them, or the stone passages that connect the gates. All that is known is that once you pass the threshold, you cannot use the same gate to return. Do not fear - the keystone on the other side will lead you to the nearest usable gate. Be careful not to lose it, for it is your only ticket home." I thought up this idea years ago, long before "Sliders", as a way to get characters from one story universe to another. I couldn't never decide which stories to mix and match. E-mail for more details about this concept. "Saturday Morning Knight" - (xover) After staying up late (until noon) watching Saturday morning cartoons with Nat, Nick dreams about cases involving the characters he saw. Possible dreams: "ReVamp" - Using GVP VR gear (yes, I know it was destroyed, but this is a DREAM), Nick is ported out of the Vamp game and into the world of Mainframe, where he helps Bob defeat Megabyte. "Marvel Vampire Universe" - Dr. Doom and the Mandarin join forces with LaCroix to take over the world, forcing Nick to seek out Reed Richards and Tony Stark. Vachon joins a furry biker gang to fight a really cheesy villain. "Mighty Morphing Power Vampires" - Tired of the opposition in Angel Grove, Lord Zed turns his attentions towards Toronto, but meets with some unexpected resistance. Zordon creates new Zords for the local heros. "VampiRe Troopers" - Using GVP VR gear (see "ReVamp") and a spare virtualizer, Nick joins the VR Troopers to fight Grimlord. "Night Flyers" - A strange boat with four passengers (three statues and a New York cop) drifts into Toronto harbour. When night falls, the statues vanish. Suddenly Nick is no longer alone in the night sky. (I know there was an HL/Gargoyles xover, but I can't remember if FK showed up in it.) "Nicky and the Brain" - Nat gets a new lab mouse from Acme Labs who promises Nick a cure for his curse in exchange for his aid in world domination. Meanwhile, Tracy helps her new pet try to find his lost friend. "Nat's New Look" - Our favorite coroner finds a mysterious wooden mask in the personal effects of one of her "clients," and feels compelled to put it on. When she does ... "Tracy's New Look" - Nick's perky partner finds a mysterious wooden mask at a crime scene, and feels compelled to put it on. When she does ... "Sidney's New Look" - (ARRGH, Somebody Stop Me ....) "The Adventures of Natalie Lambert" - At a crime scene in an abandoned warehouse, our favorite coroner is accidently doused in a mysterious chemical that give her strange powers... "The Adventures of Tracy Vetter" - At a crime scene in an abandoned warehouse, Nick's perky partner is accidently doused in a mysterious chemical that give her strange powers... "The Adventures of Sidney Lambert" - While hunting a mouse in an abandoned wareho<KLONNNG!!!> OWW! Thanks for stopping me. <THUD> "Warrior Coroner" - (xover) When Nat grasps the handle of an ancient Greek sword used as a murder weapon, she changes places in time with her remote ancestor, Xena. How does a Warrior Princess deal with modern Toronto? How does a rational scientist deal with a world where the ancient gods are real? And (of course) how do they get back home? (Inspired by a Spiderman/Red Sonya xover comic I read many years ago.) Must include following scene: (Tracy leaves) Xena: (staring after her) Is she always like that? Nick: (shrugs) You get used to it. Xena: (bemused) I know what you mean. "Perky is Forever" - (xover) When Tracy touches an ancient Greek amulet found at a crime scene, she changes places with her remote ancestor, Gabrielle. (Possible sequel to "Warrior Coroner") I think that's enough for now. Good writing. Dalton S. Ahhhhh Redemtion is pretty much a self serving interest. All basic personality traits aside,( I do think he's kinda sweet) the guy wants redemtion. >To cite examples: he helped Lily's family to escape East Berlin >in 1966 (Can anyone see LC wanting to do that if she found that >book for him?) OUCH! Are you *trying* to push some Cousinly buttons? <g> LC may not have been interested in obtaining *that* book, although he may have if he thought Nickie was getting close to something dangerous, he'd want it first, of course, BUT, if Dear Lily procured something of equal value for LC *and* he felt like it, sure, he'd let them out the back door. LC isn't without loyalty. He did repay the Godfather in "Father's Day". Nick is on this totally unaceptable quest, and he hasn't killed him, or let anyone else kill him. Obviously, from "The Fix", LC is concerned about "Those who sustain our secret" coming down on Nick. >Nick would have been molded by a master in selfishness anyway >after he was brought over. :) That's the whole thing about Nick, he's not that pliable. LC has been trying to mold him into a proper vampire for eight centuries, and right away, his first week of feeding (I think in "C&C) He doesn't throw in. He started the Angst right there. And in "Blood Money" he defies his teachings and that was ages ago. He is resiliant, resistant to change, after eight centuries he's still seeking a way into the heaven he died believing in. That's why he's so much fun for LC to taunt. I mean, really, Nick is wearing LC down! LC has *given up* trying to knock sense into him, and is more of a voyeur, just watching Nick torture himself, teasing him from his little booth. Nat tries to get him to follow her regimines, protien shakes, vitamins, sun ****ing bed, EATING, nibbling, not drinking any blood. But does he do it? No, no, no, no, no, no, he can't even remember to take his vitamins. And the minute her back is turned, he's at the bottle. (Total Spoiler discussion this topic RE "Games Vampires Play") He wants Instant Humanity, he wants "The Fix". He doesn't want to change, he wants a cure. >Except, of course, as.Nick normally feels attracted to a woman--one >of his weak points, after all, is a natural liking for women. When did that become a weak point? >I agree with you Laurie. Nat is a mortal; LC is a vampire. > I don't see how anyone could think Nat would have a *ghost* >of a chance against LC.She's alive only because LC feels no need or >desire to get rid of her. Laurie also writes> I see no support for their position apart from >wishful thinking. Susan Writes> Nat would have to accept being a vampire, since >it's sure LC would not want to be mortal. > LC has the potential to *totally* destoy Nat psychologically since he >isn't the type to want an "equal" relationship with anyone. I am not a Valetine, far from it actually. However, LC can have all the babes (Excuse my english) in Ravenland that he feels compelled to discretely engage. However, I believe the man (Vampire) is starving for some intelligent company. Especially without Janette. I think he actually *enjoyed* the conversation with Schanke in "Close Call", aside from being pissed at Janette and Nick for leaving so many loose ends. Who is he going to chat with? Miklos, who hangs upside down in a closet? Vachon? Urs, who could only depress him? His callers? Boring Boring Boring Someone wrote a very refreshing piece of Fan Fic, (I suppose I'll hunt for it when I'm through ranting.) where LC meets a charming mortal who is capable of entertaining him on his level, and he LOVES her company. [okay, it's "Child of Truth" by Merry Troupe] Nat is not afraid of LC and he knows it. I think LC could conceivably become involved with Nat. on a level where they talk, play chess, he teaches her to be more computer literate, they discuss Mass Murders, and have whatever physical relationship FK vampires who *reek* of self control can have. I see LC having no problem being with a mortal for certain pleasures, without loosing control. That way, she will shrivel and die before he grows tired of her.,.... unless of course, at the first sign of a wrinkle she *orders* him to bring her across. As far as LC destroying Nat, in whatever form, his whole reason for being in Toronto is Nick, if he kills Nat, he looses any hope of reclaiming Nick.. They all know that. All these pages of talk of Nick and Nat in a Mortal relationship is more along the line of Wishful thinking. First off, if LC doesn't bring him back across and destroy the cure, he'll *kill* him in a final act of parental disgust. But if LC is somehow out of the picture, won't the Enforcers ice Nick? And Nat to boot. It's a giant vampire No No, becoming mortal is. He is really wasting his time. Seeking to be a more humanitarian vampire is one thing, seeking to be mortal, is seeking to be destroyed. But it does make for some great storytelling, this quest of Nick's. . >All the above are just my opinions, of course. Ditto. Catherine's a fun chick (as are the rest of the Denver Contingent, of course) and a good time was had by all. No quote list, nothing that memorable came out of it. I think you'll find that your volunteered instructions for formatting and titling fiction on FKFIC-L have already been anticipated by those of us who have been on the lists for some time. While I understand the temptation to throw out random ideas in hopes that someone else will write a story you won't give your own time to, I'm afraid it's fairly futile. We have many excellent authors on the list, all of whom have more ideas than they can handle themselves. This is largely why it is considered proper for the initiator of a challenge to "throw out" the first entry: Otherwise we'd be awash in passing ideas no one had time to give attention to. I realize that, as a newcomer, you probably haven't had a chance to pick up on things like this. (Perhaps a slightly-longer lurking period is in order?) I got an okay from my mom tonight to have my FK/Vampyre party. Once again, it's the Tulsa, OK area, I won't know exact date until I get the run week of Last Knight. I've already gotten one message of interest, so it's a definite as of now. Anyone who can make it is welcome. Plan for weirdness, Ribena, strange movies, and George the Plastic Bat (who will be making a rare appearance outside my room). There may also be some fan friends off mine who aren't on the list for various reasons. I'm going to try to put together a sub-theme of the Vampyre's Funeral, which, considering, is just preparation for the next shot around. If anyone has any ideas, or is interested in attending, e-mail me at phoenix@i........ Will hopefully have occasional updates on progress put up. Ta-ta for now! It scares you when you're watching (spoiler-protected ep. title here) and the time of (SPOILER)'s death is 12:36 am. You look at your clock and it's 12:36 am. (Insert Twilight Zone theme here) 2. You can actually quote along with the Nightcrawler. In an episode you've never seen before. Hmmmmm... maybe there's something to codeine after all (still on the stuff! Don't worry, I'll be off in a few days) And now, the drink. As there have been no other suggestions as to the Official Cousin's Ingredient, I'll assume Pernod/Absinthe. SEX WITH UNCLE ON THE BEACH (variant of the original Sex on the Beach, as printed in _The Complete Bartender_ by Robyn M. Feller, Berkeley Books, 1990) 1 oz. vodka 1/2 oz. Midori melon liqueur 1/2 oz. Chambord (or other raspberry liqeur. For an FK feel, you may want to replace some or all with Ribena) 1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice 1 1/2 oz. cranberry juice cocktail dash Pernod or Absinthe (not replacing anything) Fill mixing glass with ice. Add vodka, Midori, Chambord, pineapple juice, & cranberry juice. Shake. Pour into Highball glass. Add dash of Pernod/Absinthe. My siblings have had something at least similar to the original, and pronounced it good (they're older than I am). If anyone tries this, please tell me how it turns out.
