I have just learned how to do a really really really neat thing.

If and ONLY if you have Netscape 2.0, go and check out this URL:

http://members.aol.com/CuznJamiMR/SFKanimate.html

I have no idea yet how I am going to use this (because it is a specifically
Netscape thing) but I am terribly terribly excited about it, and feel the
need to brag...

If, after having seen the above page, you still do not believe that I am
The Webgoddess, check out THIS url:

http://members.aol.com/SpyderWebz/index.htm

And then you may genuflect. <g>

PS: Don't bother with either of these if you don't have Netscape 2.0 --
earlier versions of Netscape, other types of browsers, AOL, Compuserve etc.
will not view these pages properly (or at all, in fact, as I haven't set
them up with alt formats). Unless you're running Netscape through AOL.
There's supposed to be a way to do that, though I've never been able to get
it to work.

PPS: Both of these pages will keep reloading themselves indefinitely until
you click on a link or hit "stop". Just so's you know.

PPPS: I might be persuaded to let y'all in on the secret. For suitable
payment. I AM a Merc, y'know. :-)

o.k. I wrote up a "Wow! Thanks for showing FK on SciFi-- when are
there going to be new eps and merchandise and stuff?" letter and
emailed it to SciFi.

To my surprise, I got back (right away) a nice, helpful, non-form
letter response.

Of course, they're not yet saying what we _want_ them to say <g>, but
they seem inclined to listen and it's always good to make an impact!

(I sent out variants on this same letter to KK, the new guy at SciFi,
and TriStar by regular mail this afternoon)

Sorry, but I'm afraid it is very unlikely that USA will be offering
Forever Knight again. They had been carrying it, but it was dropped by
USA and picked up by Sci-Fi because it was not earning high enough
ratings to maintain itself on USA. I hope you'll be able to get Sci-Fi
soon. We do plan on running the show from the beginning once the 3rd
season ends, so even if you won't have Sci-Fi in time for FK's premiere,
we will probably still be showing FK by the time you do.

I personally don't have any leads regarding FK merchandise. It couldn't
hurt to call 1-800-TREKKER, our on-line catalog associates, to let them
know you're interested in FK-wear. They may already have some that's
simply not listed in our catalog, or they may be able to get some if
enough people express an interest. I would be surprised if there was an
outlet for FK video tapes - most series never get distributed on home
video and FK is unlikely to be an exception to that rule. You'd have
more luck looking for dubs amongst other FK fans.

I hope you'll be able to see us soon. Thanks for the feedback.

This isn't that strange - one of the manifestations of the vampire legend
is that the vampire sleeps in the form of a bat. In fact (ObFK!) when
Schanke went snooping around at the Raven, didn't we see Miklos sleeping
upside down in a closet?

Can I put in a plug for keeping your line length down to 72 characters or
less? I know that many people are using nifty proportional fonts
nowadays, but those of us who are still reading mail using a dial up
connection get very weird line wrapping with longer lines.

Check out the scene where Brad Pitt is sitting on the beach with the natives.
Look behind him and you'll see Nigel in the background. I think he's
supposed to be the boat Capt. Also they show him carrying some tusks through
the weeds. And then later when Brad is having a nightmare and freaking out,
Nigel's one of the guys thats holding him down. You can only really see the
top of his head, but I would recognize the top of his head anywhere. Anyone
ever seen "Gulag"? I recognized him from *behind* in that one...pretty scary
huh?

Subject: Er... Hi

I've just arrived on your mailing list. (I'm sure the phrase "new blood" is
an extremely old joke by now.) I've also only recently discovered FK, have
seen about 2/3 of the episodes, and would like to get acquainted with some
kind souls who might be willing to help get my feet wet, so to speak.

My name is Jean Graham (which is probably in the header somewhere, but oh
well). I'm a writer who's published both fan & pro horror/sf/fantasy
fiction. (Fannish work mainly in BLAKE'S 7, U.N.C.L.E. and DARK SHADOWS
zines, pro stuff in various places, including in the upcoming DAW paperback
anthology, THE TIME OF THE VAMPIRES, coming to a bookstore near you this
May.) (OK, OK, end of shameless plug.) I'm the same age as the Ultimate
Answer to Life the Universe and Everything (yeah, really, that ancient), have
been married 19 years, and live in San Diego CA with 1 husband, 5000 books,
600 video tapes ("Hi, my name is Jean and I'm a biblio/videoholic"), un-
enumerated dust bunnies, and 7 1/2 "wake-up-and-feed-us-or-we'll-all-sit-on-
your-head-at-once" feline entities.

I recently stumbled into your FK fanfic archives and have been enjoying what
I've read so far very much. (Soon as AOL recycles and I have more connect
time, I'll download some more.) This is fun.

Any answers to the questions below would be much appreciated. Private e-mail
(to JeanB7@a.......) is fine if you don't care to clutter the list with too
much "been there, done that" stuff that everyone's already seen. I'm
interested in knowing:

1) What aspects of this series first attracted you to it and kept you
watching?
2) What other vampire fiction/media do you like and why?
3) There are FK fanzines, yes? Please send recommendations -- and addresses?
4) Are there tapes anywhere of the uncut Canadian versions of FK's 1st
season? I have lots and lots of strange and interesting stuff on tape to
trade for copies, if anybody's willing. (Just tell me what you're looking
for, or I can send you my nice fat video list.)

Would love to hear from some of you.

Thanks!

Our condo association is in the process of taking bids on companies who will
provide our cable service. Not only am I on the cable committee, but I'm on
the Board of Directors as well.

I am happy to say that the rest of the cable committee is in agreement with
me about which company to choose, and that is the one that has the SciFi
Channel as a BASIC channel. Now, that's not anyone's criteria but mine, and
I never said a word, but I'm grinning like a fool.

This company sounds better anyway and their specialty is serving high rise
buildings, so this is really the logical choice. Really it is. Hey, they
use fiber optics and will provide access to the Internet soon. Honest, that
was why I liked them. STOP LAUGHING AT ME.

So I will finally be able to catch the shows I've always wanted to see, but
for some reason wasn't interested in them at the time they aired (does that
make sense?). Well, I've wanted to see them since I became obs..I mean
interested in FK.

I tell you, I almost wanted to insist that the company swap USA out of the
basic lineup and put it in expanded, just to screw up USA's numbers, but I
don't think the rest of the committee members, or residents, would have
liked that. A building with 230 units is a nice chunk of change for those
folks.

Subject: Re: Nick&Nat, Nat&LC

Well, I decided to get in on this discussion. :)

Laurie Fenster writes:
>Imo, one of the major reasons that Nat likes to be around Nick is
>because he's *safe*. Unattainable.

Yep, I agree, although there have been some instances this season
where Nat has seen that Nick might not be so "safe". I think she'd
be afraid of a *real* relationship between them.

>Meanwhile, Nick thinks he is attracted to Nat
>because he is attracted to her mortality.

Imo, it's more than that. Nick has pinned so much of his hopes of
being mortal on Nat that he's "idealized" her to a big degree (sort
of like he idealized the ballerina in Love You to Death). It's part
of what has allowed Nat to consider him "safe".

>If he ever did become mortal
>though, I think any illusion of a romantic relationship between the
>pair would fall away so fast as to make one's head spin.

I don't think it would end so fast since both of them are capable of
self-deception.

Jamie Randell writes:
>Of course, that relationship's more than a
>little strained at this point -- considering the fact that Nick's been a
>total bitch to Nat this season, this is a given

But what about Nat being a bitch? People can say that she has a right
to gripe because Nick says he wants to be mortal all they want, but
that doesn't change the fact that Nat has been quite a bit more
unpleasant to Nick this season. Perhaps some of Nick's treatment of
Nat is a reaction to her attitude toward him. Iow, a vicious circle.
And maybe part of the reason that Nick has been getting more drawn
back into the vampire world. Most people do better with support than
with criticism.

Laurie writes:
>Nick is far too narcissistic (i.e., self-absorbed and not
>in a good way) to leave room for anyone else.

While I won't argue that Nick is self-centered, that doesn't mean that
he is totally incapable of having relationships. He spent 97 years
with Janette and we've seen other instances where he's committed to
someone. Nick also cares about humanity in the broad sense or he
would never have decided it was wrong to feed on or kill humans. He's
helped a lot of people even before his current incarnation as a
Toronto cop when it didn't really benefit his own interests to do so.
To cite examples: he helped Lily's family to escape East Berlin in 1966
(can anyone see LC wanting to do that if she found that book for him?)
and helped his woman friend to "disappear" in Forward Into the Past.
The fact that Nick hasn't given in totally to his *desires* for Nat
shows that he is capable of considering the welfare of other people.

Jamie writes:
>But Nat has done more to break through that solid wall of
>self-absorption than anyone else.

See the above paragraph for examples of how Nick is not so totally
self-absorbed. Nat has certainly been intent on pointing out the
errors of Nick's ways (particularly this season). I wonder, though,
if self-centeredness is something of a trait of vampires in general.
I mean, have we seen very many unselfish vampires? If you consider
yourself above humans, doesn't that naturally lead to a certain degree
of selfishness? Nick would have been molded by a master in selfishness
anyway after he was brought over. :)

>She's forced him to see other points of
>view despite himself; and...I think that's one of the
>things Nick treasures about her.

Part of Nat's worth to Nick, I always have thought, is her ability to
point out the "human" side of whatever he's involved with. And she
used to try to make him see how some of what he expressed was the
"human" viewpoint, which I think acted to help him feel that he was
not so divorced from humanity. This season she has seemed to me to
be heavier on criticism of his actions, which I think has to make him
feel more alienated from humanity.

Laurie writes re: the above quote:
>I think it's one of the things that annoys him about her. He
>feels the need to put up with it, but he resents it.

I agree that he's been getting annoyed, but because she's been more
critical than "enlightening". He looks to me like he's getting very
tired of her harping at him.

>they've established a certain trust -- to the
>degree that either of them ever trusts anyone. Which is nothing short of
>miraculous.

And that "to the degree that either of them ever trusts anyone" is
one of the stumbling blocks to any *long term* romantic relationship
between them if Nick becomes mortal (or stays a vampire). Trust has
to be a major element in a relationship and neither of them are people
who feel that they can totally trust someone else.

>There was a DEFINITE instant
>mutual attraction btwn. Nick & Nat -- which is, I think, the ONLY reason
>Nick bothered sticking around afterwards.

Well, that's your opinion. We know that in the Canadian version of
Only the Lonely Nick tried to hypnotize Nat into forgetting him, which
kind of argues against the above quote. I also think it's possible
that Nick was interested in why she wasn't running and screaming from
him when he woke up vamped out in the morgue. I do think Nat felt an
instant attraction to Nick, but I'm not sure he felt that sort of
attraction to her (except, of course, as Nick normally feels attracted
to a woman--one of his weak points, after all, is a natural liking for
women).

>Except that Nat is a little more self-aware than LaCroix, so in
>the final outcome, she'd probably win.

Laurie additionally comments:
>I don't know where the Natpack
>gets this idea that Natalie Lambert is superwoman, that she could take
>LaCroix in a fight, etc. etc., but I don't buy any of that...

I agree with you, Laurie. Nat is a mortal; LC is a vampire. Nick
couldn't kill LC by staking him and burning him. I don't see how
anyone could think Nat would have a *ghost* of a chance against LC.
She's alive only because LC feels no need or desire to get rid of her.

Laurie also writes:
>I see no support for their position apart from wishful thinking.

Again, I agree.

Jamie writes:
>Esp. in third season, it's as if they represent the duality of
>Nick's existence: the vampire half and the human half --

That's been a feature of the show since first season, but then it
was Janette and Nat.

>each with its
>separate hopes and fears, more alike than either wants to admit.

And that's another thing that could drive Nick and Nat apart eventually.
Nat has a "controlling" nature just like LC. Nick can, I think,
benefit from having someone stronger and steadier than him to counteract
and put some brakes on his overemotional nature, but there's a
difference between that and *control*. And I think that at some level,
Nick thinks Nat is too controlling (his comments in the morgue when
she won't let him have the drug in The Fix). He's had enough of that
from LC and if he felt too much "control" from Nat, he'd be out the
door before long.

>I think that part of Nick's attraction to Nat is her humanity, the
>same way part of Nat's attraction to Nick is his alienness.

I can agree with this.

>her need to
>help him, and his need for acceptance.

Again, agreed, except that I don't think Nat fulfills his need for
acceptance because she's only able to accept the human side of him.
He likes the fact that she supports his aims to be mortal and live
as a human, but there has to be a part of him that wishes that she
could accept *all* of him.

>OTHER problems -- the fact that Nick is in no
>way prepared for humanity -- the fact that Nat would surely outgrow him
>swiftly

Yes, it would be a big adjustment for Nick to be mortal again. I
happen to think he would eventually adjust. But rather than Nat
outgrowing Nick, I think it would be more a case of she'd lose more
interest when she wasn't *needed* by him anymore.

I think there are bigger problems of a more psychological nature that
would make their relationship become unhealthy in the long term. Nat
comes from an "abusive" background, as does Nick through his experience
in being the "child" of LC. Nat, on some level, may feel a need to
be in an "abusive" relationship and we've seen that Nick is more than
capable of fulfilling that need for her. If she reacts by trying to
"control" the abuse, Nick could leave her for someone else. But there
is also a possibility that Nat would accept abuse for a while (the
happy honeymoon stage) and fall into a trap of continuing to accept
abuse. Nick, because of what happened with LC, might not even
recognize that he's abusing Nat. Of course it's possible that both
of them could overcome their past conditioning, but I think their
experiences with being abused in the past would have to have some
effect on their relationship if Nick became mortal and was actually
able to have a real relationship with Nat.

I also think Nat (and perhaps Nick to a degree) *think* they would
like a relationship with each other. I'm with Laurie when she says
that Nat's afraid of a "real" relationship with a man. Nick, too,
might experience some fear if he was mortal again (although Nick,
being Nick, would tend to toss his doubts aside more and be more
willing to jump right in). Nick's fears might be that Nat not like
him as much if he was mortal and if she showed any hesitancy on this
matter, he could convince himself that maybe they didn't really
belong together. This is the same man, after all, who, despite being
jealous of Roger in Only the Lonely, was able to put aside his personal
feelings and encourage Nat to pursue that mortal relationship if it was
what she wanted.

Laurie writes:
>I do think Nat is attracted to Nick, though I'm
>not sure how much of that is physical attraction.

Well, without mentioning spoilers for third season episodes, I would
say that Nat this season has been even more physically attracted to
Nick. Certain comments of hers regarding "sex" have shown a very
visible level of frustation at not getting any with Nick. :)

>I just don't think the reverse holds.

I don't agree. I think Nick desires Nat; he just buries that desire
a lot. Nick is not the sort to not desire someone he is romantically
attracted to. And we've seen evidence in Only the Lonely, Be My
Valentine, and other third season episodes that Nick has a romantic
interest in Nat.

>He puts up
>with her *nagging* now, because he needs her. Once he was mortal, and
>felt capable of fending for himself, he wouldn't.

I think Nat's nagging would be capable of driving Nick away if she
kept up with it too much after he became mortal. If she let up on
nagging, though, I think there are still other things that could
drive them apart eventually.

>Where conflict tears people apart, imo, is where there
>are difficulties in self-esteem issues, so a person under fire takes
>the argument as a personal attack.

And this is one of the areas that has a lot of potential to drive
Nick and Nat apart. Due to his experiences with LC, Nick does most
definitely have problems with his self-esteem. And, although Nat
may talk a good show of otherwise, I think she has self-esteem
problems as well. She tries to deny that she does by acting tough.
Nick, on the other hand, thinks all his problems stem from being a
vampire. If he became mortal again, he'd find that that doesn't
cure all his problems (and certainly not the psychological ones).
The crucial thing would be for both of them to recognize that they
have these psychological problems and work to try to correct them.
Otherwise, they could argue in such hurtful ways that it would drive
them apart.

There's also a possibility that the relationship become an unpleasant
co-dependent one.

Plus, although this might be more minor in nature, how much of what
Nick feels for Nat would stem from gratitude (if she cured him)?
Or patient/doctor infatuation?

>Since I see
>both Nat and LC as fairly confident in themselves, I don't see conflict
>as tearing them apart.

I think Nat's confidence is dependent on circumstances. She's
confident in her professional skills, but I think her confidence is
more shaky in personal matters (it's more of a "front"). This being
the case, I think LC would automatically have the upper hand on Nat
in a personal relationship. And considering his tendency to control
people (and abuse them if necessary or desired), I think a relationship
between Nat and LC would be even *more* unhealthy for Nat than Nat and
Nick together if Nat doesn't come to terms with her own abusive
background and shakiness in personal relationships. LC has the
potential to *totally* destroy Nat psychologically since he isn't
the type to want an "equal" relationship with anyone.

Well, although this is already very long, I just wanted to add that
I do think Nick and Nat have feelings for each other. But I see their
relationship as being the type that would be very intense for a while,
but "burn out" eventually (due to some of the things mentioned above as
problem areas). They would have to really be willing to put work into
their relationship if they wanted it to last. But I personally don't
think they would be a couple "forever".

As for LC and Nat, I just don't see that happening at all myself, even
though I can see areas of compatibility between them (their intelligence,
loyalty, need to control). Nat would have to accept being a vampire,
since it's sure LC would not want to be mortal. A More Permanent Hell
aside (looking at your own untimely death was a big impetus for Nat
there), I don't think Nat really would want to be a vampire (she sure
doesn't accept it much in Nick). If she was brought across, she'd deal
with it. But I don't think she'd like it.

All the above are just my opinions, of course.

Subject: Faction for the Decisionally Challenged/ Cousin Paranoia

While attempting to fall asleep the other night, I was thinking about
factions and how I was having such a hard time picking just one (no wonder I
could not sleep!) All of a sudden, I had an idea (a very rare occurance) how
about a faction for fans of Jacquiline/Elenn/Monica of HoD fame : JEM's! That
way each of our personalities could have their own faction. No stress, no
worry, no angst!

This has been a joke, if it had been an actual faction suggestion you would
have been advised to run SCREAMING from the room!!!

Cousin Paranoia: Lately, I have been thinking much more about Cousinhood, in
fact, thinking about it alot. That maybe I really should be a Cousin, how it
spoke to my true nature(you get the idea)... Then, today I realized why. The
people I have been communicating with from the list and most on IRC are all
Cousins! What a devious and clever plan! I almost did not realize what was
happening, how I was being so subtley led. I must say I am impressed, I
really admire such a subtle and sneaky plot to subvert my mind. You (and you
know who you are!!!) are a credit to your faction. You know I'm so impressed
that I think maybe I should be a Cousin...?? hmmmmmm

Yes, yes I'm going now....

I was watching Airwolf tonight, and the magician looked really familiar.
He was a young guy, not unattractive, with short red hair, big ears,
a goofy smile, and a fake French accent. It took me a long time to figure
it out (I _hate_ it when that happens), but it finally came to me: Screed!
Sure enough, the end credits listed Gregory Kramer. (BTW, yesterday's
episode featured a _really_ young Jason Priestly.)

Good Evening, My fellow Listbuddies!

I have returned to the realm of mailing list insanity! That's right...I'm back
and I'm here to stay!

Let me tell ya' that I've missed all of you! With a little help from my
friends (you know who you are), I was kept up to date on all the happenings!

The First ever Virginia FK Party was a success! A fantastic time was had by
all! We were graced with the presence of our illustrious Webgoddess/ Mercenary/
Honorary Natpacker/C.O.U.S.I.N/Assistant Listowner (whew!) Jamie, with whom I
give all the virtual chocolate she wants for getting me back on the lists,
Zillah, our wonderful host, Chatelyne (wave), Apache's sis, Adrian-who came in
Apache's place (Moo! you like the cow?), Linda the luker & NatPacker, Jean
Kennedy, Lisa Knust, & Raindance.

We embibed in Ribena-I have it on video, (blackmail is a wonderful thing..Is
that a cousinly trait?) and sat around til about 4am watching FK videos &
contributing a vast amount of quotes for the list (Jadfe or not Jadfe? That is
the question, isn't it Jamie?)

Despite people e-mailing me & calling, I have to get readjusted to the lists, so
please be patient...It won't take me long to get used to this again..

Happy Cousin Becky

Speak NOT of misalignments of the planets; my Saturn return happens in
another week. Fyi, the Saturn return is the Big Bad Nasty of astrology.
And a twelfth-house-Saturn-return-in-Aries-with-Chiron-involved is, like,
"shoot me now"...

But we have been remarkably PG-rated lately, haven't we? Well, the VA
party quote list will change that.

And speaking of...

Yo!

It wasn't Pipeline, it was the forward-to-aol that I forgot I did; and it's
fixed; and I did get the mail although my mailboxes crashed (again) and I
lost it all; and I only just posted the quote list and haven't seen it
bounce back yet; and I cc'd you on it anyway, so it's THERE. (I *am* the
semicolon master of the universe. I am.)

And no, I only had to censor two words in the quote list; and most of the
Jadfe-oriented material was in the context, not the actual quote, so I was
able to post it as-is.

:-) Off to code more animated gifs. Btw, does anyone have a good .gif of
the USA network logo? I had an, um, interesting idea of an animation I
might do...
