The website is correct. However, when you click on the "question" link, OR the

I guess that means they're updating it as I type?

Subject: Why I Like Janette

Chanda, I've been hunting for the post I wrote responding to the same
question about a year and half ago (though it came from someone who
*wanted* to like Janette and was having trouble doing so), but like most
of what I post I let it go off into the ether and evaporate. I shall
attempt to recreate (and adapt for the passage of a year and a half):

I have been fascinated by Janette from the very first episode of FK, from
the moment she punctuated that very cool and cagey discussion with a look
of longing that obviously followed Nick all the way out of the room...but
not until his back was turned. And while over the past nearly four years
(can you believe it, guys?) I have been frequently heard to complain that
she was desperately underutilized, I have to admit that part of what *so*
hooked me on her was the fact that we *did* know so little about her for
so long.

Of course, that fascination hinged entirely on the fact that Deb--despite
her own huge underestimation of her power as an actor--made her so
very engagingly, intriguingly *real* that of *course* we could only
assume there was always more to know about her.

And then, every once in a while, we did. We learned the painful secret
of her mortal origins, in so potent an example of TV storytelling that I
spent at least half the episode curled up in the corner of the couch,
clutching my grandmother's quilt for dear life and sobbing my fool head
off and wishing I could *kill* something in approximately equal
measures. We watched her gradually come to some understanding of this
mad quest of Nick's, make the long journey from "Ah, but you're not
people...you're never going to learn that, are you?" to "If that is what
will make you happy..." and beyond. And lest it all become too pat, the
occasional "I've been down this road with him before; it's a dead end"
thrown in as a reminder that what he thinks will make him happy
represents a sacrifice for her. And of course, if anyone rates
sacrifices in this consummate survivor's reckoning--however large a flaw
it might be in her logic!--it's Nick.

I love her because she has the power to wipe the floor with any man--a
revenge fantasy we all need once in a while--but more because she has the
courage to show compassion in a vampire culture that prizes
ruthlessness. She survived a thousand years within the boundaries
LaCroix placed on her life (and whatever improvement it might have been
over where she came from, and whatever he might insist to the contrary,
those boundaries can be very confining indeed), yet some how did it in a
way that allowed her to remain in some ways more her own person that Nick
might ever understand how to be. (Without getting into particulars that
belong on the spoiler list, I think that's true now more than ever.)
That one took me a long time to
recognize; I used to mourn for the spirit of the woman who might have
been, and only very gradually did I recognize that she was not only in
there, but emerging bit by bit into the open. And that, with LaCroix's
return, took the greatest courage of all.

I enjoy seeing a woman on television ripping doors off their hinges, or
intimidating large men with an implicit threat and a well-placed vise
grip, as much as the next pirate queen manque. :-) But it's the quiet
subtle things, the little contradictions, that really endear any
character to me and give me the sense that there's a whole person there
that I'd love to get to know. Janette is as rich in those elusive
elements as any "lead" character in any storytelling form, thanks to
flashes of insight on the parts of some writers, and of course far more
to the vibrant life Deb brings to everything I have ever seen her do.

Of course, all this is window dressing. The truth is, as with anyone
else, real or imaginary, I can't give you a rational reason. I love her
because she's Janette, and that's it.

Later!

Subject: Sony survey

I was just out to the Sony FK page and sure enough, there's a survey about
the last episode. The URL is:

http://www.spe.sony.com/Pictures/tv/forever/forever.html

They basically want to know if you think Nick should achieve mortality in
the *season* finale or not and to tell them why. They're also giving away
mugs.

I filled out the survey and took the opportunity to remind them that we'd
*love* merchandise and that we'd *buy* mugs if they sold them.

Everyon should go and fill that surve out--make sure they get tons and tons
of responses.

Not if you exempt Nat letting everybody and her daughter attempt a heart

I could make comments about her being a "competent" coroner, but since Lubbock
has had a 10-year-old scandal involving a county examiner who's JUST NOW

It also makes it a moot point because shooting finished on the season

It's an attempt to gather addresses and other data - just another
marketing tool. All they ask is if you want Nick to regain his mortality,
yes or no.

Actually, all of these threads DO relate directly to FK: Nick's problems
with the sun, Nick's view on whether or not he has a soul, the question of
whether or not FK vampires have retractable fangs... those *are* on-topic
threads. When the discussion veers away from FK vampires specifically to
vampires in general, that's off-topic; and that's when the assistant
listowner crawls out of her hole and posts. <g>

>Does anyone agree with me? I am new to this list and I thought the
>topic was relevant to FK. Next time I will know better.... I've never
>been much of a lurker... maybe it's time to start.

Please, don't take my post in that light. It's always good to have new
voices on the list! and my post was not intended to discourage you or anyone
else from posting.

But on a list with over a thousand members, it's necessary to adhere to some
rules, otherwise the whole thing becomes a tangled mess. The "stay on topic"
rule has been around for a long time; longer than either Beth or I have been
on list. (I only got here last August.) And while it can be tricky to
determine just where that line between on-topic and off-topic lies (like with
that thread that kept veering back and forth between FK and Kindred) it's
imperative that the attempt be made.

Beth, I appreciate your good intentions and the work you put into your
article; please don't think otherwise. But the fact is that this list exists
specifically to discuss FK vampires, as opposed to vampires in general;
that's just how it is. And although it was your post that spurred me to
post, my words were not directed solely to you; considering the size and
activity of this list, it's often necessary to post 'reminders' to keep the
discussion on track. Especially since there are new listmembers signing onto
the lists every day...

But everyone makes mistakes (I personally am the Queen of Sending Personal
Posts to the List!) and that's no reason to stop posting!

In conclusion: Sorry, Beth, but rules are rules & I don't make 'em, I just
enforce 'em; but please don't be upset about it, either. Warm fuzzies...?

She was the victim there (although she may have been a bit stupid about

Well, it's true that she's covered up the real cause of death for
some vampire victims.

After reading a couple more posts about this, it sounds like the main
thrust is to get an opinion about whether Nick should regain his
mortality or not.

So...it's possible that they filmed to endings and they're looking
for a consensus about which one to use.

It's still a mistake, imo. They should look at what they've done
with the show and decide what to do for themselves.

I think Katja got it! Congrats Katja. But, anyway, I'm a sucker for those

I'm pretty sure they know that FK has a very large online following so that
can't be the reason. And we all know that the last ep. is in the can.

Still, I think we should all go and fill one out and be heard. Whenever
we're asked to show up as a fandom, I think we should - in hoards of

It's not just your system or server. Surfing onto Sony's site with Teri's TENET
account (in which the board/server is just text-Lynx based, no nice gfx!), my
answers were rejected every time I entered the SUBMIT button and I got bounced
back to the TENET web server area. Apparently, Sony's doohickey doesn't like
Lynx or something.

Sorry, but my opinion is stuck! Which is/was not that Nat's a villain for
anything, just plain stupid about a lot of common-sense things. However, I
admit this may be due to the USA-ization of this season's eps. My wife Teri
who's "only" a school teacher has had the same procedure done to her knee with
just a local anesthetic due to arthritis and suffering from a couple of bad
car wrecks years ago. Likewise, **NO** competent physician worth his/her
salt would give a drug or blood derivative to someone without *testing* the
thing first. Doing so would be stupid AND highly unethical (and also grounds
for legal action should the kid's boxing friend decide to sue the crap out of
the police department). Heck, even this year's worst STAR TREK: VOYAGER eps
have had the holodoc do testing for his procedures before inflicting them on
his patients.

Which is also unethical, but so did Dr. Julia Hoffman do the same for Barnabas
Collins, et al., in DARK SHADOWS, right?

Which, again, wasn't what I was implying. Just that half the season she needed
a brain tissue implant, let alone a good tort book, rather than any type of
stuff from Nick! ;D

Welll...not necessarily. I'm up two knee surgeries now, and was put
completely out for both of them. My doctor's reasoning is A> it keeps the
knee much more immobile, and B> you never know how much damage you're
actually going to run into. He found much more damage than he anticipated in
the second, and the operation ran 3 times longer than it should have.
Extremely uncomfortable if I'd been under a local.

Pardon the rant....I just don't get why this keeps coming up. <gryn>

Considering the Enforcer situation, this could be viewed as self
preservation.

Definately not. Misguided sometimes...<especially if she DID duck that

Thanks all for your prayers.

Now then back to FK -

You Know You Been Watching Too Much Forever Knight When . . .
I was watching (I think this is where I saw it - brain still recovering
from comps) Worlds Funniest Videos and they are doing a play on words -
Someone holds a light inside a suit of armor and says "Knight light"

I was ROTFL thinking of a glowing Nick Knight walking around, especially
in a suit of armor.

Has anyone considered the possibility that they filmed more than one ending?

Oops, I just saw Sandra thought of that too. We've go to stop all this
conjecturing. But even if they did shoot more than one, why should they care
what *we* think? Unless its to keep an opening to change their minds about a
fourth season, or at least a shortened one.

I normally eschew these things - but I admit it, I want a mug. Maybe I'll

I use lynx and didn't have a problem - it wasn't the most lynx-friendly

I, Werewolf. On CBS. This is the network that lied to us about saving
FK and moving it into prime time if they got enough letters in 1993.

FK came in with about three times as many letters as any other CTAP
and they still axed it.

Does anyone else ever wonder if JP, Jon Slan and Barney Cohen broke
a mirror or something just before they started filming FK? :)

Some people seem to be upset that the show is going to the Sci Fi channel. I
think it is great. Don't get me wrong I would LOVE to have a season 4 with
all new shows, but if it isn't going to happen isn't it good that the show
will get this kind of exposure. I bet Susan is right when she suggested they
might do a new movie. After all they would have an audience built in
already. If we are going to help Forever Knight live we should be spreading
the word about the show and having people who have access to the Sci Fi
channel watch it. Then we should write to the Sci Fi channel and encourage
them to do a new movie. Who knows mabie this will be the channel which will
finally show Forever Knight the respect it deserves. :)

Lana regarding the Sony request for our opinion about how we think Last
Knight should end:
:It also makes it a moot point because shooting finished on the season
:finale, WAY BACK in February. So unless that survey's been lurking around
:since then, I fail to see the point for this "survey".

Often shows are filmed in several ways so that they can decide at a later
point exactly how it will end. This is also sometimes done to prevent leaks
of information prior to its actual debut. So, it is possible that they are
now trying to make a final decision about how the show ends.

Would someone like to explain how they can be taking a survey now?

Shooting finished and the sets were struck last month. There's no
way to reshoot.

Unless, of course, they shot two endings ....?)

First Ger is quoted as saying "hiatus" in an interview and now Sony's
saying season instead of just finale.

Is anyone else getting dizzy from all the jerking around?

Besides, whether or not I want Nick to become mortal depends on whether
or not this really is the last episode the series will ever have.
