Sitting here reading my e-mail and realizing that I have lost today's
posted stories--could someone send them to me--a song just grabbed me by
the lapels and gave me a shake. M. Etheridge's "I Want to Come Over" is
the story of Nick and Nat all the way. Give it a listen when you can.
Barbara

P.S. One of the stories I lost strated out with Tracy discovering Nick
and Nat in a juicy kiss.

Certainly. Plus, if we're to go USA w/ Uncle, I'd love to see one

Remember write these people, like most of you I don't get the Sci-fi Channel
and doubt very seriously that it will be added to my cable system (darn D.C.

In addition I have also posted a note publicly on the USA BB on Prodigy but
still haven't heard anything!

Here's hoping that maybe if they get sick and tired of all of us which they
probably already are, maybe they'll run FK (all 3 seasons) on USA.

I know it's wishful thinking but hey, I can dream can't I?

Come to think of it, I have a BRICK that my university thought would

Just a warning....
I know from experience that most companies will NOT touch a copyrighted image.
Any one/place that does duplicate copyrighted material without written proof
that its use has been permitted by the copyright holder can be held liable for
infringement themselves.

Even graphics/photos off the web and many from fan clubs are copyrighted.
EVERYTHING FK is copyrighted. Examples of exceptions are pictures taken at
conventions of actors - not characters, i.e. - a picture of Ger is OK but
Ger as Nick is not - though NOT ok are the pictures specifically done by his
fan club.

Artwork of any kind that mimics a copyrighted image can not be done (i.e.- a
friend of mine did artwork for a fan zine of Riddler from Batman Forever. It was
her original work but not her original character-no go!)

In order to get copyrighted material copied you must have a letter granting
permission from the holder of the copyright. (It must be on letterhead stationery
for most places to accept it.) This is almost impossible to get for TV or
movies. (In fact, I've never heard of it being done.)

Almost everything "fannish" is a copyright infringement. Any use of the FK logo,
characters, story line is an infringement on the copyright. Few "owners" exercise
their rights when it comes to fans because we're too small to worry about -
what's a $15 fan item compared to the amount they expend on a show? And, fans
generate a lot of free publicity. But a few have been issued "cease & desist"
orders from unhappy owners - Battlestar Galactica fans and Star Wars fans were
told 'hands off'. I've seen the court order one fanzine writer/editor got.

I've dealt with this several times. I make personalized mousepads myself. I
can't get FK pictures done at any of the copy centers near me - even when
they're for charity (charity auctions for the Geraint Wyn Davis Fan club).
Family type photos, snap shots, etc. are no problem. Cartoons, professional
photographer's shots, etc. are no go. I finally resorted to buying a printer
that can handle B&W transfer paper and at some point I'll be able to do color
(whenever I figure out the memory!!!!!!!).

I agree with Jami that we have to jumpstart our efforts again, and I think
this is a good approach Sharon. Now that USA has signed the marriage
contract for FK, they're going to have to accept the stepchildren that come
with the deal -- let them see that we aren't quiet little children who will
be spoon-fed whatever they're willing to give. *Politely* keep pushing and
pushing and *pushing* about the new eps and airing on the USA channel.
Everyone.

We've got e-mail address and snail-mail addresses, so everyone use them. I'm
fortunate because I get the Sci-Fic Channel, but I have to admit that except
for Quantum Leap, its rather boring to have *nothing* but old shows and
reruns on that station. We should encourage KK and RP with the concept of
*new blood* to give that channel some pulse -- ie. new eps of FK! And a
movie!

As someone else noted, never even a form letter from them! Or from TriStar.
A rather impolite group of people, if you ask me. As Jami noted, perhaps we
can turn the tables and become important enough as "fans" of the Sci-Fic
channel to finally be listened to, to finally, maybe, get a response. For
those who don't get the Sci-Fic Channel, keep up the concerted effort to get
your cable companies to carry it. Which is probably what KK was hoping for
all along....

Subject: Vachon's background

Actually, Vachon was *not* in the Spanish military. This is because
what invaded the Incan Empire (which is mostly in modern Peru rather
than Mexico) was *not* the Spanish Army. Cortez, like the other
Conquistador leaders, had gotten together a pack of mercenaries.

Spanish state backing was limited to charters granting various
rights to successful conquistadors in the spoils and/or colonial
government of newly taken lands. This was a standard pattern in
the early days for all the future colonial powers. The English
did the same.

In the case of the English, there was no standing English army
as we understand the term. I don't know whether this is true
of Spain or not. If it is, it means troops were raised for the
specific occasion that looked like it was going to require
fighting and disbanded once the situation was over. Does anyone
out there know for sure about Spain?bol

Before I forget, I don't mean to imply that Diane Echelbarger didn't
know that about Peru vs Mexico (hi, Diane! <g>). It's just that I've
seen more than one post which confused the Incas with the Aztecs, who
of course were in Mexico.

Younger son of a hidalgo family is probably about right for Vachon's
background. This was probably a family without much money or particular
influence since he was free to hire on with Cortez instead of being
in some sort of government/royal service.

Subject: Read Before Hostory Note

Greetings to all!

I have finally written the article I promised I would, a brief history
of vampires. It's amazing the things I discovered in the little bit of
research I did. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop.

The note, entitled "History of the Vampire" is long, and contains fact
based on the books that I read. I was disappointed that I didn't find
alot of information about modern day vampires, especially about how they
are made. It seems that in the old days, vampires were not made by
being biten on the neck, or sucking another vampire's blood.

And it also seems that every movie and novel out these days, handles
this differently.

I was, however, able to find most of the background leading up to the
other modern day vampire traits and abilities.

Enjoy reading it, and remember, this is an abbreviated article, since I
didn't want to post a novel to the list. There is alot more info
swimming around in my head, not to mention all of the books I haven't
read yet (but hope to some day when I have time to sit in the library
for a while).

Please feel free to rip, shred, destroy, and what ever other form of
affectionate critisism you want to share. I by no means claim to be an
authority on the subject, I just thought it would be interesting to do
some research into the history of the vampire, especially after the few
threads that have been on the list lately.

Subject: History of the Vampire

The History of the Vampire
An article by Beth Washington

The modern day vampire, with it's romantic seductiveness and
awesome power, is very different from it's ancestors, originating in the
early 16th century. The tales of blood sucking monsters, or living
dead, are dated back even further than the 16th century, and all over
the world, from England, to Japan, to Africa. Despite the classic image
that Bram Stoker paints with Dracula, which has become the modern
standard for vampires, not all of the vampires from history past rose
from the dead to feed on live victims, or transform themselves into
bats.
In the earliest of times, people believed that the soul lived long
past when the body dies, and that it sometimes had enough power to
re-animate the body. In other cases, it was believed that once the soul
had left the body, and before burial, the body was vulnerable to
wandering evil spirits, which would use the body to fulfill a blood lust
that could not be satisfied while the spirit was incorporeal. In either
case, precautions were made to protect the dead, and to stop the
possibility of the dead rising from the grave.
In the case where the body was re-animated by a wandering spirit,
it was believed that the body was vulnerable due to the way it died,
either the person had given himself over to evil during his life time
and was a convicted criminal, or the person committed suicide, which is
a mortal sin. In this case, the vampire is soulless, thus it has no
shadows or reflections in the mirror, for only a living creature with a
soul can have those things.
The fear of crucifixes, and in the old times, the fear of silver,
which was used to make religious objects, stemmed from the sins
committed by the person before becoming a vampire. Suicide was the
ultimate sin against Heaven, for which there was no forgiveness. The
presence of religious symbols repels the vampire, reminding him of his
lost soul and the crimes committed against heaven.
In all cases, the blood lust, the ever desire to drink blood, comes
from the very old belief that blood was the elixir of life, and could
cure various ailments. Among these ailments was a type of anemia called
Porphyria, for which drinking blood was considered a way of driving the
disease out. A couple of the symptoms of this disease where an extreme
sensitivity to sunlight, and a retraction of the gums that exposes the
teeth -- both being classic vampire traits. Porphyria was also rare,
and it was an inherited disease, which lead to the belief of vampires
running in families.
People believed that vampires, though having hideous breath, were
repelled by strong odors, thus garlic was used, as well as other strong
smelling herbs.
The earliest vampire like creatures we can find in history were the
*edimmu* from the ancient Babylonians. These were troubled souls that
could not rest, who wandered the earth searching for victims whose veins
could be sucked. These restless souls were a result of the person,
during life, angering Lilith, the first wife of Adam who was banished
from Eden. She became a demon and swept down to drink the blood of
helpless infants and children.
The Chinese believed in the *qiang shi*, which inhabited a corpse
and prevented it from decaying by ingesting blood of other corpses and
living people. This creature was believed to need only a skeleton, even
as little as just a skull in order to be a vampire. Cats were believed
to carry these spirits, and care was taken to keep cats away from the
dead, to avoid a transference of the *qiang shi* from the cat to the
body. The Chinese also believed that if the sun or moon was allowed to
shine on the corpse, the spirit would gain in strength.
The ancient Greeks talked of the *empusa*, a demonic spirit, and
the *lamia*, a beautiful young woman who seduced young men, both looking
for the fresh blood of children.
In the 19th century, the Greeks belief in vampires was so strong,
now called *vrykolkas*, that bodies were dug up as many as 3 years after
burial to check the condition of the body of a suspected vampire. Near
the island of Santorini, where bodies where buried in volcanic ash, the
ash preserved the bodies quite well, so when they were dug up, the lack
of decay confirmed the suspicion of vampirism. It was still believed
that these vampires carried some evil spirit, and not the soul of the
deceased, so there was no hesitation in beheading the corpse and setting
it afire.
However, most *vrykolkas* came for reasons other than seeking out
the living and sucking blood. It was often believed that it was because
the soul could not rest, and was either coming back to make things
right, or to seek revenge against a wrong done against them or their
families. In one case it was reported that a woman cursed the grave of
her dead son because he did no fulfill his promise to find her daughter
and return her. The dead son rose from the grave, found the daughter,
and fulfilled his promise. The mother then removed the curse, and the
son fell into a pile of dust.
The ability to fly comes from the belief that vampires had the
ability to shape change into an owl, not a bat, which was Stoker's
invention for Dracula. It was also believed that another favorite form
was becoming a cat. The Chinese believed that concubine vampires that
hung around the palace, would shrink out of their Kimonos into cat form
and slip away, to avoid being caught. One could recognize such a
creature for what it was because the cat had 2 tails.
Due to the superstitious nature of people, and their devotion to
religion, the belief in vampires grew, spread, and evolved. There were
people who thought themselves vampires, and then there were others
accused of being vampires because of some oddity. The methods for
executing a vampire were many and varied. The most popular was to cut
off the head, place it between the legs of the body, then burn it to
ashes and spread the ashes. A stake through the heart could "kill" a
vampire, but only if it wasn't removed. It was even rumored that a
vampire can return from being burned if the ashes are not dispersed.
As far as the sun killing vampires, it was never part of the
vampire history. Due to the disease, Porphyria, the extreme sensitivity
to sunlight started this belief, but has been exaggerated in modern day
vampires. This belief also stems from the fact that demons and evil
spirits can only function during the darkness of night.
Even according Bram Stoker, Dracula can function during the day, he
just simply isn't as powerful and prefers cloudy days. Anne Rice
describes some of her oldest vampires as having hardened skin, and are
all but immune to the sun. All seem to agree that the only way to
destroy a vampire fully is to decapitate it and burn it to ashes.
Many of the vampire and vampire like creatures of folklore were
thought to have the ability to impregnate women. The dreaded incubus
and succubus, were male and female spirits who visited people in the
night and engaged in vigorous, debilitating sex. The belief in these
spirits was closely related to the belief in vampirism. The Greek
*lamias* also sexually seduced their victims.
Can vampires have children? There are even records supporting the
belief that they can. In the Balkan Mountains, vampire hunters were
often hired to rid the area of vampires. Some of these hunters were
thought to be *dhampirs*, which were sons sired by vampires. They were
said to be gifted with peculiar powers that allowed them to have power
over full vampires. In the Anime "Vampire Hunter D", the main character
D is a *dampiel*, a half breed, who can function during the day and
choose to live as a human, but can also grow fangs, suck blood, and
sport a variety of other vampire abilities His mother was a human, and
his father was a noble (a vampire).
Hypnotism. This belief comes from the early beliefs that demons
could put their victims in a trance, rendering them helpless, though the
need for this was little, since the demon also enhanced the strength of
the body it inhabited. Often people accused of being vampires would
plea that they were in a trance when they committed the act of murder,
and did not remember doing anything.
Now there are Vampire Research Centers in New York and various
other places around the world, and their are even people who still
believe in vampires, in one form or another. It is the persistence in
the age-old fascination with the idea of vampires. The modern day
vampire has been changed from the gruesome, demon possessed creature, to
a romantic, seductive figure, enchanting women and stealing their life
blood with a "kiss".

Subject: FK on SFC (kinda long)

On thing I did hear in the aftermath of the SOSFK movement, and I can't
remember where--someone may have talked to the Chicago affiliate?

Anyway, apparently stations tend to discount letters about a show when they
come in big batches, correctly assuming that someone is telling people to
write.

What we need to do when FK starts up in April is make sure USA, SFC and
TriStar get a *steady* stream of mail about the show.

For example, I drop a postcard to both my local affiliates every time I see
a new episode of FK on their station. Since we've long maintained that
we're not getting measured by the ratings system, I like to think of this
as a way to indicate to them that I am watching and that I am a steady
viewer. I'm not worrying too much about whether or not they'll recognize
my name or not--I figure it's got to be worth something to someone if I
bother to drop them a note every single week there's a new episode.

It only takes a moment to scribble out a postcard. You can buy postcards
with postage already on them from most stamp machines or your post office,
and it's a quick and easy way to let them know you're out here.

Anyway, I'd like to suggest that people start doing that as well, both for
the rest of 3rd season in syndication and when it moves to SFC. It's
probably what we should have been doing last fall when FK moved to USA but
most of us thought we'd be OK for at least a 4th season.

This also means spreading the word about the show and getting any new
people to start writing as well. We also might be able to get SFC to do a
piece on FK fandom and the charity on one of their shows, like "Sci-Fi
Buzz" or something so that people know we're out here.

Gee. I might be just being silly, but I always thought that song was
about lesbians who wanted to come out.

Strange, but that doesn't strike me as having a THING to do with Nick and

I'm looking for the name of a FKFIC story that was posted back I think
maybe in January. It had Tracy bring everyone - mortals and vampires

much interested in reading it, but I no longer have it on my disks, and

Hello my name is Nick.
He had to be the hero.
All of us are... computer people.
Is this one of the few that doesn't have prostitutes...
they're usually about lunatics and prostitutes.
Danger - vampire in flashback mode.
He's glowing!
Vampires never wear turtlenecks.
Does Natalie ever hit anybody? I think Natalie and Janette
should get together and beat the @#$@# out of Nick.
It's kind of like the smoke that he didn't inhale... he drank but
  he didn't swallow.
He's going to become a blood-aholic.
The smoking coat!
Haven't you ever heard of smoking jackets.
Life can go on for eternity but you can't have any sex in it.
Boy that would put a crimp on eternity.
Nick is a wuss. Natalie can beat up both of them.
He's glowing again. He's radioactive.
There's chocolate?
I think Schanke is galactically stupid on the level of Lois Lane.
Schanke is so romantic... a caring and nurturing guy.
Is this a flashback? I thought vampires were the only ones to
have them. She's been around Nick so long that...
Oh sure, be all nice and romantic with every one else but
Natalie... that's why he needs a beating.
Necrophilia... she's not gone that far yet. you have to think
about it though.. Nick is practically dead.
He's such a messy dude. it's the teeth.
Where'd the chocolate go?
You eat in the computer lab? We have a big enforcer in ours.
Just smack him real hard! (smack) Yeah!!!!
It's not chocolate is it?
She should hit him again... she never gets to hit anybody.
It's one of those minor things like forgetting to put down your
toilet seat. You say that's minor?
Even though he is psychopath he is a good kisser.
How come he's always flying in circles? He's directionally
  challenged.
He's scuffing her shoes.. that's what we call insensitive.
Women don't ever tell us anything they just signal. We should
be able to just say the same.

She's not really a vampire. She's been faking it for 800 years.
The cameraman must have really needed to go to the bathroom.
Anyone else get dizzy during that scene?
Ger needs to get David Duchovny's haircut. That'd be cool.
I really, really like it when people smack Nick.
Ooooooh, she's even using Nick's last name!
Let's see how good a cop she really is. Can she figure out who
  it is?
She can be taught!
Why is she cowering? Janette doesn't cower!
I gotta learn how to do that hypno-thing.
Lying in the sun? I don't think so. Lying in the Florida moon
  maybe.
Nick, if you could only hear the music, you'd know they were
evil.
Yes, great sex is the key to mortality.
Yeah, Nat's probably thinking, All this time I've been using
science, and all I had to do was sleep with him?
First 200 years were bliss, and then....And then she met Nick.
Meanwhile, Tracy's still trying to think.
A thought crossed her head! Yeah, but then it hurt, so she
ignored it.
I love that look on his face...Reese interrupted the perfect

Subject: LIST RULES: Stay On Topic

A brief restatement of list policy, from your friendly neighborhood listowner
(working off a secondary account):

FORKNI-L and its companion lists are dedicated to the discussion of Forever
Knight ONLY. Discussion of other vampire shows, or of vampires in general,
do not belong on this list.

There are other mailing lists devoted specifically to vampires and vampire
lore. Postings relating to vampires in general should be directed to one of
these outlets.

But if it ain't about FK specifically, it shouldn't be here. That's how it
goes.

Jamie reminded us, and specifically me;

I beg to differ where it came to my post. There were several
discussions going on about vampires in general, problems with the sun,
soulless vs. having one, fangs, being brought across, the ability to
fly, etc. People were citing examples that would explain where these
things came from.

My note was in response to all of those threads, all of which were not
directly about Forever Knight. My article was written to give the fans
of Forever Knight some insight into the rich history that ultimately
lead to modern day vampires, and our favorites, Nick, LaCroix, Jeanette,
and Vachon.

>There are other mailing lists devoted specifically to vampires and

But vampire lore is the basis for Forever Knight. Couldn't Nick's cure
be buried deep in the history of vampires, somewhere, just waiting to be
found.

>But if it ain't about FK specifically, it shouldn't be here. That's
>how it goes.

Does anyone agree with me? I am new to this list and I thought the
topic was relevant to FK. Next time I will know better.... I've never
been much of a lurker... maybe it's time to start.

Subject: The night shift in Toronto

Wow, just how far north do you think Toronto is?!? Toronto is actually
further south than many parts of the U.S. It is a bit further south than
Portland, Oregon, or Minneapolis, Minnesota, and is a *lot* further south
than Anchorage, Alaska. Yes, the nights in summer are short in Toronto,
but not *that* short.

It is true that Nick might have trouble squeezing in a full 8-hour
working day in, say, late June when the days are longest. (Does anyone
know how long the longest day is in Toronto?) He may make up for it in
the winter, or he may claim that he's going over evidence at home. Or
maybe that's when he takes his annual vacation. ;^)

Hmm... it is interesting to imagine the life of a vampire in Anchorage,
Alaska. Able to be outdoors almost all the time in winter, but having to
hide indoors virtually all the time in the summer. I suspect your average
vampire wouldn't stay there the whole year 'round -- they'd summer in
Tierra del Fuego or someplace like that!

Now that I think about it, it's pretty obvious that Nick was lying (in
"Amateur Night") when he told the Chicago police that he had been a police
officer in Edinburgh, Scotland -- that city is not much further south than
Anchorage, Alaska. The summer days in Scotland are extremely long, and
I'm sure he would have a much harder time trying to lead a normal life
there than he does in Toronto. Unless he arranged to be there only in the
winter, when the sun only seems to be up for a few hours each day. I seem
to remember sunsets in Scotland in late December being at 3:30 or so.

Hmm.. just looking at the map, and I realized that Toronto is further
south than London or Paris.
