This post is about Latin grammar and English word formation.
 *
 *
 *
( For the two of you left, I will continue . . .)

Latin nouns take slightly different forms depending on their function
in the sentence. (English pronouns do the same: she, her, hers; I, me, mine.)
English words derived from Latin nouns may follow either the nominative
(subject) form of the word or the genitive (possessive) form. There is no
rule determining which and English being the wonderfully irregular language
she is, you can have several words from the same Latin root, some of which
derive from the nominative and some from the genitive form.
We have an example of that here. The Latin word for blood is sanguis
(nom.), sanguinis (gen.). The English words sanguine, sanguinary,
exsanguination are all from the genitive form. But for some reason, whoever
coined the word for bloodeaters used the nominative root. No way in the world
to predict it.

ObFK: We saw in first season that Janette both smokes and drinks. I wonder if
Nick ever experimented with marijuana, hashish, or opium in the Sixties
(1860's or 1960's, take your pick).

The Sanctuary bar isn't it. I think that's a still functioning Vampire Sex
theme club. The club they actually filmed the Raven scenes in was called
Stilife. It's located at...shoot, I don't have the info handy here...hang
on...

     217 Richmond Street West

That's it...however, the door's not actually *on* Richmond, it's on a side
street...I don't know the name of the side street for sure but I think it's
something like Duncan. Either that or my memory is really gone...which it
may be.

A note: this is where they filmed the Raven scenes first season, after that
they filmed (interiors, at least...) in the studio.

How about Nick, still living on into the future, where a murder case
brings him to Bablyon 5, where he not only runs into Geribaldi, Marcus
and some pesky telepaths, but comes face to face with Koch...

Can you imagine. Nick would be just another "alien" on the station. He
could fall in "love" with Ivaniva, and enlist the doctors help in
searching for a "cure".

Unless they're hollow through the back. This is going to get into conic
sections, so hang with me.

Take the rough cone shape (ie, fang). Now, instead of cutting the hole as a
tiny circle, cut it at a parabola, up the back (this is actually similar to
hypodermic needles, since they're cut at an angle). Now, instead of a hole
the size of a pin, you've got one the size of a drinking straw. It could
work, as long as the enamel is thick and somehow coats both the inside and
outside of the hole.
However, since the blood would probably go into the sinus cavities,
vamps would probably develop one hell of a headache!

Someone where I work brought in the most unusual catalog today, and since
some on the list had talked about wanting FK items, ie. calendars, etc., I
thought this might be of interest.

The company is called Exposures, and they make just about everything
plausible out of photographs. The item I thought all you computer users
might want to know about are the mouse pads which can be made with your
favorite photo. "Send us your original photo or artwork, up to 8 x 10" (no
slides, negatives, or copyrighted photos -- *guess you'd have to make sure
about that last one*). Allow one week extra. Made of heavy-duty rubber." I
thought perhaps pictures taken off the web or received from fan clubs might
be usable. It would be nice if people could get mouse pads with their
favorite FK character. Anyway, for anyone who wants to check it out, the
address is:

Subject: Light Cousinhood

I've been toying with the concept of "Light Cousinhood" all week, and I
thought I'd post my ponderings. Feel free, full Cousins, to rip it
apart... after you've recovered from the laughing fit it will surely
cause. :) It all started when I saw "Be My Valentine" for the first time
this weekend... and then "A More Permanent Hell" (Thanks, Lisa!). They
were just so good! Largely because of LC (Or NB, as the case may be..).
Not only did they contain good plots and marvelous acting, they showed
that LC is capable of <getting ready to duck and run> angst!
        <hiding behind a pillow> Really!
His feelings for Fleur... his willingness to give her up... the scene
under the tree across from Nat's window... the perfect tag of "AMPH"...
the discourse in Nick's apartment on the way vampires are parasites on
human society...!
I cannot condone the way LC has chosen to conduct his existence.
He is evil... but no one is simply "good" or "evil"... even LC. The idea
may seem ludicrous on the face of it, but as the desire for happy endings
is the power of tragedy... The Dark Knighties seem to want Nick to return
to Uncle's view of vampirism; I think I'll root for LC converting to
Nick's point of view...!
Never happen? I know. Ah, well. :) At least the rest of you will
have me handy the next time the next time Uncle's in the mood for a hopeless
innocent... :)

I have a theory as to why Nick picked cow. Lets turn our minds to the
first season--Dark Knight pts. 1/2. Nick and LC have a fight in a
slaughter house. I believe that Nick buys cow's blood from the slaughter
house, using the "thicken my paints" reason. He prossiblely provides the
wine bottles reasoning that this is an easy way to transport the product.

I can try that out. I'm quite certain that's not what we did. Our tv has
always been hooked up to cable. One thing though, my dad has this extra
box that he uses which allows him to hook up another vcr if needed.
Everything is hooked up to that box. It might of had something to do with
that.

Anyway, I'm willing to experiment this weekend. My closed caption decoder is
from 1988 and maybe that had something to do with it too. I'll let you all know
if I succeed.

the asphalt at People's Park when the University paved it, volunteered at
Berkeley Neighborhood Legal Services, chanted "Ho-Ho-Ho Chih Minh, NLF is
going to win" [and incidentally, we were right], and got a degree in
Classical Greek in the interstices. Missed Woodstock, darn it.

I can see Nick dancing naked in the moonlight. Especially if
someone suggested it would free his mind/soul, which was a phrase
frequently spoken in them days. Nick would mainline Laetrile, if
someone, particularly someone young and fetching like Marian Blackwing,
suggested that it would help.

Yes, there is a way if I can get my dad to figure out what we did before.
Somehow we got the vcr to tape a show and change it from closed
captioning to open captioning. I'll let you know once we figure it out again.
It was how we hooked it up that made a difference. This was a few years ago.

I don't think that'll work. From what I've seen, making the captions
visible is a function of the TV set, not the VCR. So to tape with the
captions visible, you'd need an output jack from the TV set, and I'm
pretty sure that TV sets just don't have that kind of output jack.

(The clock and other noise that get on to copies are outputs from the
source VCR, not the TV.)

I want to publicly thank our dear Laura for the generosity in sharing her FK
goodies -- I suspect it took a lot of work to make them. And what a
brilliant and fun way to provide the WAVs: in themes! I'm sure that method
of presentation will greatly help newbies and other non-FK experts to sort
out the many offerings.

For Knighties and Ger fans who don't already know, Laura also manages the
Lucard homepage (from "Dracula, The Series" in which Ger had a recurring
role as Klaus). It's at http://www.dpcc.com/dpcc/assoc/lpetix/lucard. Hmmm,
perhaps when y'all make requests for FK WAVs (per Laura's post), you could
convince our most generous former Cousin to provide some Ger WAVs from that
show, as well? ;-)

Speaking of offerings, I recommend to anyone who missed it, Laura's
brilliant FK fan-fic piece from last year, "Blood Is Thicker Than Water."
Not only is it very well written and creative, she also keeps Janette, Nick,
and LaCroix true to their characters as she unfolds the story of Muriel,
child of the Roaring '20s and ... (you have to read it to find out). ;-)
BTW, Miklos is in there, too!

I think Nick might have more enjoyed the music of rock bands like
The Doors and Steppenwolf. If the "dream" in Dying for Fame was
anything to go by to indicate his interest, he was more into leather
than beads and bell bottoms (and what an outfit! drool! :9 ).

Nick would be into the "meaningful lyrics" music, I think.

Oops, I might have meant the one that bit Perry. I'm getting my vampire dogs
mixed up. Didn't we see one or the other of them, at least for a second?
Kind of a feral looking guy? Am I imagining it? Anyways, here's something
else that makes me think a Carouche is a vampire that's made without
receiving any vampiric blood: If that Carouche that had put the bite on
Perry had given him his blood, wouldn't Perry feel some kind of bond to him?

This just gets curiouser and curiouser. ;)

Vampire Sex Bar...really. It's called Sanctuary (it used to be called the
Vampire Sex Bar [or Club] but after a little 'incident' they thought it
prudent to change the name to Sanctuary...don't ask me, I'm just relaying
what I was told...)

As for t-shirts, from what I have heard about it I doubt it, but we can
check it out.

This might be something, if it hasn't been thought of before. The
west side of this state is sci-fi TV heaven, because they get all six
networks and UPN, WB, and Fox fill up all their spare hours with syndicated
stuff and old series. Of course, FK is probably already on UPN in most
of the places it's received, and they're in the same situation as all the
rest of the syndies, but if UPN *itself* was aware of the audience FK
carries, even in reruns...? Oh, I forgot USA's rights to the reruns.
Darn. Does that mean there really is *no* alternative to USA until their
contract runs out? I've gotta go buy more stamps... :)

Well, um, since it looks like I inadvertantly got myself drafted to be in
charge of oraginizing the outing to Santuary next month when we go up for
the play, I *should* have the address to post...and I will. Gimme a few

Of course, as has since been said, Nick's POV defines his
existence for him, whether we agree with it or not (I happen to, mostly,
but that's just me). It occurs to me, though, that Nick's personal
"great chain of being," extrapolated from his behavior, probably pictures
animals as soulless, humans as having souls, and vampires... as the
defining problem of his personal philosophy. On the one hand, he sees
vampire behavior as utterly immoral and soulless. On the other hand, he
is incapable of accepting the idea that he no longer has a soul, and
certainly would tell himself that the very existence of his wish for
redemption is proof that he can be redeemed. His inability to accept
either alternative produces his angst, which he thinks he can resolve by
regaining his mortality, because then there would be no question of his
status.
Just my pile of pennies... :)

Though I may have joined the group after this was discussed, and please
feel free to tell me so, but...

My husband bout the Sci-Fi Universe Magazine, the March 1996 issue, and
discovered that there is some Forever Knight articles in it with some
*great* pictures.

The issue centers on Babylon 5, and hace Bruce Boxleiter on the cover in
his Babylon 5 uniform. On page 32, we see a full page picture of Nick
vamping out, and 3 articles along with several more photos follow on the
next 5 pages. Good reading!

There were hints of a feature length movie, of course utilizing the cast
we all know and love, as well as some comments for Nigel, and some from
Ger, and some insight into their psychie. (sp)

Enjoy!

Allow me to direct you to the FKFIC-L archives... there's this one author I
know of, her stuff is total crap, but she's played with the
vampires-of-the-future theme. The story title that comes to mind is "In
the Age of Transparent Aluminum..."

Actually, I can't direct you to the archives. I don't know the URLs by
heart. But the story's either on the web page or on the psuvm ftp site.
Or both.

I haven't yet seen Karen's web page, but I can attest that it is superior
to the SFK page in one respect: the stations list is UP TO DATE.

Mine isn't. Unfortunately, I made it so fancy that it's a real pain in the
anatomy to update.

Next update, I'll likely link to your page, Karen, and I don't CARE how it
looks as long as the info is correct! (Which I know it is...) And don't
forget, prior to starting the SFKWP, I didn't know anything about HTML...

It's people like Karen (and Lisa and Lana and

afloat throughout the coming months/years. Thanks!

I think that Nick sees himself as being damned as long as he remains
a vampire. Remember in Near Death how upset he was at the condition
of his soul as he was shown it? Now whether that was a "objective"
or "subjective" experience, the upshot seemed to be that nothing Nick
had done to try to become better (not killing humans, trying instead
to do some good) had made much difference to the state of his soul.
The guide tried to tell him that "grace" was the key (which I took to
be God's forgiveness), but Nick didn't want to hear that. I think on
some level Nick thinks that nothing he does will really make a
difference *except* becoming mortal again, at which point I think he
thinks he will then be more "worthy" of God's notice. He may even
consider that becoming mortal again would be a sign that God had looked
favorably on him and his quest.
