I wish to nominate Tracy. Who knows, maybe what this country needs is a

Subject: Being brought over

We have been shown more than one way for people to be brought over
on FK. One is by the vampire draining someone almost to death, then
having that person drink the vampire's blood. However, a variation
of this was in first season's Fatal Mistake. Nick "partied" with a
barmaid in the flashback, bit her, and thought he'd killed her. LC
came along, found she wasn't quite dead (but she was definitely very
unconscious), drained some of his blood into a cup and *at the first
taste* of it on her lips, her eyes flew open. In second season's
Bad Blood, we see evidence that LC can bring someone across by
accident. LC attacked someone who proved to be Jack the Ripper, but
found his blood made him ill (so ill he needed Janette's help to get
fresh blood). He also sensed that Jack was evil and wanted Nick to
go and make sure the man was dead. Nick goes to look at Jack, but
doesn't do anything. After he leaves, Jack wakes up a vampire. In
the same episode, Jack in the present day "kills" a black woman
rookie cop, who is shown to have also been brought over at the end
of the ep (this without any evidence that Jack had her drink his
blood). In two episodes (first season's If Looks Could Kill and
this season's Fallen Idol) we have seen people experience either non-
aging or some other "healing" from *small* quantities of vampire
blood being injected into them. *Drinking* vampire blood without
benefit of being attacked might not bring someone over, but I think
that there might be a possibility that a sufficient amount *injected*
could work since such small amounts have "healing" effects (people
got the benefits without becoming vampires themselves). LC also
seemed to bring over Alyce Hunter in Dark Knight 2 without having
her drink his blood, as Nick did Serena in second season's Baby,
Baby. I don't think Perry had Jody drink his blood in Blind Faith
either. :)

Hmmm, I feel like I've forgotten something, but I can't think what.
Oh, well. I don't remember it being established anywhere that
someone drinking a pint of vampire blood wouldn't become a vampire.
Since we've seen cases where someone drained a lot and then drinking
vampire blood can come across, perhaps there could be a point where
someone could ingest enough vampire blood to come over (although
why one would do so...bleh!) without having been attacked first.

Although I would love to see a person with Natalie's high integrity

it would be just those two qualities which would cause her to have

We may have been reading Screed all wrong. If the dingo thing is

Maybe he was deported there from England as a criminal. That

Well, it was not given a date of creation, but it was given a painter,
Leonardo da Vinci. So (running to my copy of Vasari...) Leonardo lived
1452-1519. Say, probably around the early 1500's.

And since the topic was brought up, I want to say that Leonardo was a
*lousy* choice for painting Janette! Leonardo was notorious for not
finishing paintings, and there were many, *many* other painters in Italy at
the time who were far more likely to have done a portrait. Besides which,
the painting doesn't look like a Leonardo painting. I would say it looks
like Giorgione or Titian, with the soft lighting. But since Leonardo is
famous, they dropped his name in without regard to style or likeliehood.

(Whew! I got that off my chest! Now I can go back to my paper on the
differeing styles in painting between Florence and Venice in the 16th
century!) ;)

From: Allison Percy <percy91@w.......>
Subject: Vamps & sun; Fangs; Dogs

(1) Why do vampires burst into flames in the sunlight?

Those of you who remember my position on the "why do vampires sweat and
cry blood" issue will find the following very familiar.

My opinion: vampires burn in the sun because it is a Compelling Dramatic
Device, or CDD (tm). Gotta give them some weaknesses, after all, and
spontaneous combustion in the sunlight is a whopper of a weakness!

It follows as well that the CDD explains why vampires cringe from crosses
and other religious objects. ;^)

CDD works for me!

This should in no way be perceived as trying to put a damper on the
scientific vs. religious explanations everyone's having so much fun with.
The cool thing about FK's failure to provide a clear explanation for
everything -- well, practically *anything* -- is that it's left to the
fans to think and debate about!

(2) Vampire fangs and bloodsucking

While we may not know exactly how vampires suck blood from their victims,
you can see from watching it done on various episodes that it involves a
lot of effort. GWD & NB (probably the other actors, too -- I just can't
recall right now) often put a lot of intensity into the portrayal of
vampire feeding. They don't just latch onto the neck -- they shake their
heads around and snarl. Makes it look like a lot of fun!

(3) Jody, Perry, and the issue of control

As to whether Jody will be able to control the carouche Perry (since Nick
couldn't control Raleigh) -- remember that it's Perry who brought Jody
across. Perry is the vampire daddy. The real question is, can Perry
control Jody? ;^)

LaCroix has spent centuries "hounding" Nick across the face of the earth --
Perry gives this concept a whole new spin!

How do you say "Give in to what you are!" in doggie-speech? And how old
would a vampire dog be who was brought across, say, at the same time as
LaCroix? Nearly 2000, or nearly 2000 x 7 = 14,000 in doggie years?!?

As a parent, I am against the V-chip. Its created for people who can't be
bothered to interact with their children enough to know what their doing.
I'm sorry, but I don't need the government to tell me what I should or
shouldn't let my child watch and I don't use the TV as a "babysitter",so I'm
well aware of what is being seen in my house. And to keep this on topic..how
many parents here allow their children to watch FK? I do. I wonder how many
developed their love of vampires et al through "Dark Shadows" (which I
started watching when I was around 12) and carried that over to FK?

OK, I had to jump in here. This is turning out to be a great discussion. ;-)

Wade wrote:

An allergy to faith? I have to believe that this reaction to religious
symbols is purely psychological. Case in point -- _For I Have Sinned._ At
first, Nick is flinching away from a small silver cross pendant. A couple
of scenes (and about 24 hours or so) later, he is hearing Schanke's
confession in the confessional of a Catholic church during the day. I do
not believe that he somehow either rid himself of a physical 'faith
allergy,' or managed to bring enough goodness into his 'evil' soul in this
short amount of time.

>>So, the sizzle when coming in
>>contact with religious symbols is a product of the vampire's inherit
>>'soulessness' or 'evilness' coming in contact with something that had
>>been imbued with the belief and souls of hundreds of peoples. =)

If I believed that Vampires lacked a soul, or were inherently evil, there
would be absolutely no reason for me to watch FK. In the first place, if
Nick is lacking a soul, then his quest for redemption (I believe that he
really wants redemption, *not* mortality) would be utterly pointless. I do
want to see Nick redeemed, but as a *Vampire.* I believe this will happen
if he accepts himself and all of his actions. However, if he does not have
a soul, we've all pretty much wasted three years with FK haven't we?
(Because Nick will never be mortal and LC, Janette, Vachon, etc are really
evil. OK, maybe the Fods and Perkulators haven't been wasting time. ;-);-))
Or is there anyone out there (and I'm asking, not flaming) who believes that
FK Vampires are truly evil and should be destroyed? Because if they are
truly evil, with no hope of redemption, then what is left but to destroy
them, or let them destroy us? That is IMO, bad horror movie stuff and
decidedly *not* _Forever Knight._

Keep in mind that mortality, IMO, has absolutely nothing to do with
redemption. As a matter of fact, I've always considered the lines "Now he
wants to be mortal again/To repay society for his sins" to be a
non-sequitur. Nick can want both, of course, but one does not necessarily
follow, or have anything to do with, the other. (IMO)

Thanks for the discussion,

Yeah, can't'cha just see it coming? <g>

Tonight's rerun of Trophy Girl got me thinking on this, too: the remarks
about preparing one's meal (is that sorta like marinating a rump roast? or
that thing they say, about immersing lobsters in a vat of wine before
boiling them?) -- I personally ingest massive amounts of caffeine and
nicotene, and I've often wondered how this would affect the physiology of
any vampire who decided to take me to dinner. The same with the various
prescription drugs I've taken... Anne Rice-ian vampires were affected by
things found in their victims' bloodstreams; I've never been shy about
swiping stuff from her canon to apply to FK when it looks like it might be
fun to do so (apparently, neither have the FK people) and I've often
thought how helpful it might be for Nick, how constructive, if he found
some nice mortal to sip from who just happened to be taking a high dosage
of antidepressants... <g>

But beyond the simple question of food is the issue of blood chemistry and
vampiric tastebuds: might not certain blood diseases be particularly
distasteful (or palatable) to vampires? Since their perception of food
differs from ours, it makes sense that they would 'taste' things in the
blood that a non-sanguiniverous species wouldn't be equipped to detect.

However: in keeping on the original light-hearted thread (there's another
one dissecting vampire biology already, right?) I would have to estimate
that I would taste like coffee, cranberry juice or cigarettes... or some
weird hybrid mix of the three. Which might be even more effective than
garlic in inducing vampires to run for their lives... <g>

It's really nice that so many of you seem to want to know more about what
I said at the awards in my acceptance speech. This is the speech as far as I can
remember:

"I'd like to thank all the people who have made this moment possible for
me, especially all the cast and crew of Forever Knight who have worked so hard
on all seventy episodes that we have made.
I'd like to thank everyone at Tristar and Paragon, especially Jim
Parriott who has been so committed to the project throughout.
I' d like to thank all of our fans both in Canada and the USA who have
given us such wonderful support and tried so hard to keep the series alive.
I'd also like to thank my agent, Larry Goldhar who took me on sight
unseen ten years ago, and has been a tower of strength for me through
everything.
I'd like to thank my wonderful children Michael and Sam for putting up
with a dad who wears make up.
And finally, I'd like to thank one very special person who has brought
grace and compassion and caring into my life, and has shown me that there is
more to life than just passing time; Louise, I love you.
      Thankyou."

It was a very moving moment for me.

Excellent! I have given this topic a great deal of thought. Nat always
wants Nick to sample and do things as a human. To track how Nick is
doing Nat is always taking blood samples. In my fetnw Nat asks Nick for
a sample, we are not talking about blood, discovers he can father
children and decides to be, how would Nat put it, be the vetor for this
test of humanity. Nick has already made it clear he wants children--ff
episode.

It occurred to me. <g> But I thought it was a cool thread, regardless of
the practical liabilities. And wanted to see how long it took for someone
ELSE to bring it up.

Hey, we're contemplating vampire viruses and telepathically-manifesting
fangs and how people might taste to sanguiniverous sorts; and we're gonna
be balked by a little thing like citizenship?

Also: LaCroix and Janette are not Canadian. LaCroix and Janette predate
Canada.

But back to the thread. I was wondering: what political parties would the
various nominees be affiliated with? Or would new political divisions have
to be invented to cover the situation? Since the-organism-that-is-Jamie
has antibodies that violently reject politics in all their forms, I'll have
to rely on y'all for that opinion.

However, why do I have the feeling that against all obvious logic, LaCroix
would somehow prove to be very popular with the religious right?

Subject: Re: Nat's Parents

Actually, we haven't a single concrete clue whether they're still alive,
other than the fact that we never seem to hear about them. Even in "I
Will Repay", the only mention is a jab by Richard in the teaser,
"Natalie, you sound like Mom." Nat later describes Richard's funeral as
"very small, just family", but does not elaborate on whether than
includes their parents.

There are all sorts of theories floating around out there, all of which
are at least 98% instinct-based. So if you're asking for fanfic
purposes, do whatever you want to most effectively tell your story. It
won't conflict with canon. :-)

(In case you care, my instinct has always been that neither parent is
living, but since I can't really tell you why I won't take up bandwidth
trying...)

--Tigger, whose insomnia this lovely Monday morning (and I use the term
*very* loosely) probably stems from having enough girls at last night's
auditions (all of whom want to be Abigail, natch) to cast
historically-accurate afflicted circles for Salem, Topsfield, *and*
Andover; but having to PRAY that enough men show up tonight to fill out
the cast...and they can't be gender-switched like a good chunk of
Shakespeare 'cause they're Puritans and they're married...Arthur Miller
may be lucky he's already dead...  %-}

Ummm, interesting thoughts on Nat's parents. I keep hearing in the show that
Nick has no family. Yet, in FALLEN HERO, we discover that he has at least 1
nephew. I wonder what happened to him, and how/why exactly did the deBrabant
family line, excuse the expression, die out?

I would love to see a fan story explaining this...
