I hate to be redundant, but I still don't know if there will be an
episode run at one Friday morning, since someone said USA had moved it to
Tuesdays at ten. I only care, I suppose, because it was supposed to be
one of the ones I missed from the beginning of the season...

Subject: 1st Season / Schanke.

I wonder how many people who prefer the second season to the first saw the
truncated "Crimetime after Primetime" version rather than the fuller
Canadian edition?

The Canadian version was shown in Australia, but I have seen the shorter
American version. The latter leaves out a lot of the minor dialogue which
doesn't move the plot along but does help flesh out the characters. (Even
Alyce 'hold me' Hunter comes out a rounder character in the Canadian
version; the American version cuts out a couple of scenes between her and
Nick. There is one piece of dialogue in particular where Nick explains that
a fifteenth century suit of armour has been constructed wrongly, and how
anyone trapped inside it would be... er... unable to relieve himself. "Once
caught, never forgotten" he says, which settles a long standing argument
about vampire bodily functions. :-))

Of course, the American version of the first season *does* omit some rather
deadly scenes where Nick sits in his loft 'angsting' as he plunks on his
piano, stares at a candle flame, tosses a pack of tarot cards on the floor,
etc., etc., while angsty music swells up on the sound track.

Now for Schanke's role in "Forever Knight" - FoDly emotions apart, I always
considered that he acted as a balance for LaCroix in Nick's life. If you
think of Nick as an outrigger canoe, or even a boat which needs balancing,
you can see this more clearly. On the one side he has Janette, the woman in
his past, and LaCroix, the 'bad' father figure. On the other side he has
Natalie, the woman in his present, and Schanke the 'good' father figure,
representative of the mortality he aspires to. On a more mundane level,
Schanke is probably one of the few real mortal friends he has had since
being brought across in 1228.

And of course, Schanke offered a welcome touch of humour to a show which is
all too apt to get bogged down in gloom and doom and melodrama.

Amy R. mentioned wondering when N/N stopped being more than just friends. Well,
Nick and Nat really admitted they felt more for one another than just friendship
in the episode "Be My Valentine" in the second season. After they admitted they
cared for each other, LaCroix, ofcourse interfered threatening to kill Nat for
revenge over the loss of his only mortal love, Fleur, Nick's sister. Then Nick
has to pretend he doesn't love her to save her life, and then whammies Natalie
to forget they ever admitted to each other how they felt. There's a lot of
questions as to whether or not Natalie really whammied or whether she's playing
along for the ride - which could explain why she's been sort of - distant - this
season.

Even though this is a case of a Swabb...err Cousin, responding to a Raisine...

This isn't FKSpolir, so I won't spoil the episode, except to say this - the
question _was_ left somewhat ambiguous at the time of the "event".
Nevertheless, subsequent events seemed to point towards the correctness of
what you have suggested was the case, although I wouldn't go so far as to

Here's my quick personal rundown on the different seasons:

Season One: Let's do crazy things to this vampire! e.g. put him in a
church -- it seemed as though they tried to come up with every weird
situation that was bad for vampires, e.g. testifying during the daylight

Season Two: We've run out of ideas ... guess it's character development
time. Results: BMV, Permanent Hell, The Fix.

Season Three: Let's do crazy things to ALL vampires! e.g. the plague --
having run out of neat character development ideas without resorting to
groundshaking revelations, things happen to vampires in general. Then that
runs dry, and they do resort to revelations.

All my humble opinion, of course.

I agree with you. I saw "Nick Knight" on Lifetime at the start of the

wonderful devices. Frankly, Rick Springfield cannot act, and only he
thinks he can sing. The role on Nick Knight was a joke in his hands,
however, place the same role in the hands of someone who can act with
depth and skill (GWD) and an interesting dymanic character appears.

so darn hot. :) Anyway, let me know if you're interested. I need help in

BTW, I got my newsletter from Ger's fanclub and someone in Phoenix named
Jessica wants to form a FK Fan club here. She's also interested in
Highlander (can't remember what else <g>). Anyway, I have here address at
home and, after I hear from her, I can let you all know her address. She
didn't include a phone number on the flyer, so I had to send her via

then that really means FK is popular!

Also, one last thing, I'll be in Tucson on March 29 and April 26 for my

You mean something like a "Clan" of Cousins? To help with this, I looked up
the word 'group' in MS Word Thesaurus:
Assembly, band, flock, herd, throng, swarm, horde, host, coterie,
brotherhood, cadre. Have a go at it everyone!

I heard of a Brotherhood of Knights or something like that on Avonlea

How about a coterie of Cousins?

Ooh, good idea. But I can't picture her waiting for a vampire, a cop or
any other man coming to her rescue.

No kidding. These two women should form some kind of romance - not
club. (Brunettes Who Choose Men They Can't Have, But Have An

I've seen him and I agree wholeheartedly with this choice. :-)

How about Ambassador Kosh for LaCroix? He's dangerous and
mysterious and always seems to know what's going on, although
he doesn't say much. He doesn't have LaCroix's radio voice (then
who does?), but I do find myself listening intently when he speaks
(mostly trying to figure out the meaning behind his words).

I have to agree with Jaime that Nick Knight was horrible. I found myself
throwing things at the TV the first time it aired. Rick Springfield was too
busy playing "hip" and I doubt a 750 year old vampire would act like a rock
star. Lacroix had NO sex appeal.

I gotta tell you, it took a while for the idea of a vampire cop to grow on
me. I had a hard time getting around how Nick could function with the kind a
schedule a cop has to keep, even one on the night shift. That was before we
saw scenes of him coping with the daylight. If you're going to buy into a
show about vampires, there has to be a certain amount of willing suspension
of disbelief, but I felt like I was being lobotomized by the pilot. For some
reason, I began to accept the conceit in the series -- perhaps it's because
the casting was so much better. Give me Ger and Nigel any day.

Whilst I am *still* waiting for my printouts <g>:

I agree as well. Fortunately, I was brought across during the summer
reruns and saw Blood Money first - Bravo Ger! Great directing! Nick Knight
is alright as a 'vampire' movie but, I agree that it doesn't lead well
into FK. I finally saw Dark Knight parts 1 and 2 recently and IMHO, FK
is *much* better than the movie. Rick Springfield was also lacking alot
of facial/body expression which Ger gives to Nick. Ger is much more expressive
and uses his whole body in it too. I am sorry to say but the actor that
performed LC in the movie doesn't hold a candle to Nigel either. That actor
didn't mesmerize me like Nigel does with LC. Nick Knight just wasn't as
convincing. I couldn't sympathsize with Nick in the movie. Rick also didn't
show Nick reacting enough to dealing with the daylight like Ger does with
Nick. Just not convincing enough. FK is more pleasing to the eye as well
- the setting, etc.

However, I don't mind watching Nick Knight again just for fun. Still,
it's not bad for a vampire movie.

Not me - I liked the idea right away. Kinda made sense because there is a
night shift. I thought - why not? I don't think Nick would have a problem
functioning with that kinda schedule - I'm sure at first he might, but then
don't we all have to adjust to new jobs? He's been around for almost 800 years
so I think he'd handle it.

Subject: 3 topics this time!

(1) Forever Knight Charity Bike Tour

Others out there with copies of the latest GWD Fan Club newsletter will
see (among other, much more exciting things) an announcement on page 2 for
the Forever Knight Charity Bike Tour! Yes, that's right, it hasn't gone
away... it's just getting semi-organized! So if you like biking and FK
(well, I suppose the latter is a given, since we're on FORKNI-L here),
drop me a line and join the fun! It's all for a good cause.

The most popular idea so far is to have the ride right before the upcoming
Forever Knight mini-convention to be held at Toronto Trek in early August.
The ride would be somewhere in southern Ontario -- perhaps ending in
Toronto with a tour of some FK filming locations (depending on how
feasible this is, given the traffic conditions in Toronto). Personally
I'm voting to start in Niagara Falls and head down toward
Niagara-on-the-Lake, because there's a Big Whopping Downhill (well, by the
standards of this relatively flat region) early in the route at the
Niagara Escarpment. :^) Then there are some nice rural roads in the
Niagara Peninsula. Day 2 could end with a final approach toward Toronto
to see the skyline at sunset. How... appropriate!

(2) Return of GOiD

Second, I just wanted to say "welcome back" to Will Steeves, a.k.a.
GOiD@i......., who has been noticeably absent from this list for quite some
time. He gets the prize, I think, for being the Ultimate Completist
because rather than going NOMAIL, he seems to have saved all of his
FORKNI-L digests for the last few months and is *reading them in order*!
Since the last message he responded to was from January 17, I suppose
he'll read this in May or June sometime. <g> Will -- we'll see you in
Toronto at The Shrewthering, right????

(3) ObFK

I re-watched "Feeding the Beast" today. Now I know where that whole
"beast within" idea came from in the first place. I can also see why the
Dark Knighties love this episode so much. But do you really want Nick to
"give in" to his vampire side? When he does, he gives up on himself, with
devastating consequences. He sees himself as "an irredeemable,
uncontrollable beast," with no hope of becoming anything different.

I thought coterie was a friendlier term ("A close circle of friends
who share a common interest or background" - Webster), but Webster
adds: "a small, intimate, somewhat select group of people associated
for social or other reasons" -- coterie of Cousins could certainly
work.

But what about first season's "Only the Lonely"? In that, Nat is trying
to forget Nick by dating someone else (who turns out to be a serial
killer) and Nick is jealous. At the end of the ep, Nick tries to kiss
her but Nat won't let him. I guess she suddenly wondered if it was
really a good idea to get involved with a vampire.

>Then Nick...whammies Natalie to forget they ever admitted to each other
>how they felt.

Not everyone agrees with that (I don't) and I don't think it's that
apparent that that's what happened in the episode. Nat was under LC's
hypnotic control during LC's and Nick's "discussion" about Fleur.
In the tag, all she says is that she doesn't remember what happened
at the restaurant (which she attributes to too much work and too much
wine). She does *not* say that she forgot what happened with them
in her apartment (which was at least one night before the restaurant
scene with LC).

>There's a lot of questions as to whether or not Natalie really
>whammied

Yes, there are. Some people speculated that she only feel under LC's
hypnotic spell because of him drugging the champagne (but I would
remind folks that he drank the *same* champagne), which I suppose
could be possible. But LC is almost 2000 years old so I can see a
possibility that he has more ability to hynotize people than other
younger vampires.

It's also possible that Nat became more distant with Nick after BMV
because *he* had drawn away from any more romantic contact with her
(out of fear of what LC might do) and her attitude has nothing to do
with any hypnotism at all. Also, we are never shown Nick saying that
he actually loves Nat (all she admits to LC is that he said "beautiful
things"). If he didn't actually come out and say "I love you", Nat
could wonder if he had had second thoughts about kissing her and
saying "beautiful things"--that he was (or they were) swept away by
"Valentine's Day".

All at once, in a big blot <GGG>. "OtL" was *the* episode.
IMO, which is open to question since I'm definitely not an N&N-er and don't
look for tender touches or loving, caring glances from N&N, so don't know if
any of them occurred in first season prior to "Only the Lonely".

As far as *I* am concerned, I don't think we saw Nick "igniting" to Nat until
this episode, when in true male fashion, Nick up and decides he might like
Nat, mainly because he sees another man does and he has to watch it happen.
:)

Again, just MO.
