I've been reading the FK Cast as "Winnie-the-Pooh" characters thread, and it occurred to me that people have chosen the wrong children's book. "Winnie the Pooh" is much too cosy: what Forever Knight is "Alice In Wonderland"! I'd cast the characters in the following roles: Natalie - Alice. Nick - White Rabbit, who not only lead Alice down the rabbit hole, but worries all the time. Schanke - King of Hearts. An amiable fellow who likes tarts - *jam* ones, that is. :-) LaCroix - The Cheshire Cat. Janette - Alice's cat Dinah. The one who looks so sweet as she catches birds and mice. Stonetree - The caterpillar on the mushroom, for his enigmatic sayings. Cohen - The Queen of Hearts. "Off with his head!" What does everyone think? I'm going to agree about the change in chemistry from first season, but I think that it's (partially) made up for by the fact that everyone seems a LOT more comfortable in their roles than they were in season 1. (Expect for John Kapelos, of course. <sulk>) I miss Schanke! I think that season 1 isn't so much better than season 3 as it is different. I miss the humor element that was there then and certainly isn't now, but I don't think they could have pulled off some of the better stories from this season back then, if only because people are more comfortable with what they're doing. I love drama, and I'm enjoying all the great angst we're getting this season. Not to say there aren't clunkers this year, but there were clunkers back then too. Since it seems there's always a fair amount of confusion about this, let me try to explain the "no-mail" thing: If you find that you have been set to nomail for no apparent reason, it's not because we don't like you; it is because your mail has been *bouncing*. Which means that if one of the listowners/list maintainers (probably Don) hadn't set you to nomail... you wouldn't have been getting list mail anyway. Being unsubbed from the list is basically the same thing, only more serious, because it means your provider essentially has no idea who you are. So basically, the FIRST thing you need to do, if you discover you've been set to nomail against your will, is to touch base with your internet provider and find out if there's trouble with your e-mail. Maybe your mailbox got too full; maybe there was a temporary problem that lasted just long enough for the PSUVM listserv to be having trouble with your account. Maybe (as is sometimes the case) your provider doesn't even know there's a problem. (Pipeline always insists that there's no trouble, even when there is.) Most of the time, it's just a transient thing; but in the meantime, every message the list sends to you is going to generate a bounce message, and um, those are NOT good things. So: if you wake up one day to find a suspicious lack of e-mail in your box, the FIRST thing to do is send this command to <listserv@p.......> -- "QUERY <listname>" (Omit quotes, omit brackets, insert listname.) The listserv will send you back a neat little notice telling you if you're subscribed and if you've been set to nomail. If the listserv says you're not subscribed, the proper command is "SUBSCRIBE <listname> Firstname Lastname" (as above, omit quotes, omit brackets, insert listname.) If the listserv says you're set to nomail, the command you want is "SET <listname> MAIL" -- which will return your subscription to the way it was (in other words, if you were on digest, you'll still be on digest.) Or if you simply cannot remember any of the commands, you can send the one-word command "HELP" to the listserv address, and you'll get back a handy little list of commands. Or if you can't even manage that, you can scream for help to *me* (immajer@p.......; write it down on a label and stick it to the monitor<g>) and I'll help out as fast as possible. (Which does not imply warp-speed responses, but I do what I can.) Hope that this helps, and alleviates panic among those who suddenly find themselves "listless" :-) -- KEEP THE FAITH! -- Jamie M.R. <immajer@p.......> SFK WebGoddess -- Asst. Please use 3" (7.5cm) paper. It's important that all the cranes be the same size, for aesthetic reasons, if nothing else. If you're *east* of the Mississippi-- or outside the US-- e-mail me (gryphon@e.......). Tell me where you're from and I'll send you the appropriate address to mail your cranes to. Viper is Eastern Coordinator, but his internet provider keeps giving him grief over the volume of mail he's getting from the list. If you're *west* of the Mississipi, e-mail Bonnie at bonnie@o....... and she'll give you *her* mailing address. She's Western Coordinator. Keep in mind that 10 cranes, tucked into a business envelope (with a note on why you love FK and want to see it continue), will weigh more than one ounce. So, you'll need to put more than one stamp on it. Bonnie and Viper will then assemble the mobiles and ship them off to the appropriate Sony executives. This goes back to my initial problem with Tracy replacing Schanke. Schanke served as a dramatic foil for the vampire community. The community knew so much (from living so long) and were so morose because of it, while Schanke was blissfully ignorant of many things and was happier for it. (Remember how freaked he was when he almost figured out Nick was a vampire?) Tracy *knows* about vampires and it has completely restructured her life. Prior to this revelation, she was always "daddy's little girl" (or so we are led to believe) but Vachon has opened her mind to possibilities outside what her father had always wanted for her. (Spoilers for Strings if I go any farther with this line of reasoning) Look at what Vachon said to Nick in HoD: "She's still trying to cope with the new wrinkle in her reality." Tracy will never serve as a counterpoint to the vampires. If anything, she becomes an analogy for Nat, drawn to darkness but fighting for the light. But A More Permanent Hell, Stranger than Fiction, Close Call ("What has chanegd in you to make this so suddenly apparent" oooh - love that LC/Schanke scene!), even Queen of Harps, Near Death, Baby, Baby and Killler Instinct were great, because they showed us so much of Nick and his struggle. I also enjoy the first season episodes - most of them. And, on the rewatching of them, I'm enjoying season three. It doesn't reach as high as the first two seasons, but I can certainly live with the Trace and Vachon (Vachon is OK by me-just get him by me, already!) and Reese is (I agree with whomever) the best captain, IMO. Top Ten - I never did post them last week 1. Be My Valentine (What feeble excuse do you have for breaking our agreement) 2. Curiouser and Curiouser 3. The Fix 4. Stranger Than Fiction 5. Only the Lonely 6. Night in Question 7. Fever 8. I Will Repay 9. Father Figure 10. Human Factor (ok, I'm ready to take the flak. I liked it) 11. Queen of Harps I watched For I have Sinned again last night...All that talk about the cross made me want to see it again. And also saw the last half of Dark Night. Yup, can't argue, first season was good. I like them all. And I can't belive that we've got a few more to go and that'll be it. For a while, anyway. WAHHHHH. Gotta sleep now. Susan's, maybe?) that the fan's perception of the show (and often choice/s of affiliation/s) are significantly influenced by the season they saw first.>> Marina Bailey says that was her theory. I thought it was MY theory. I posted a long discussion of it a couple of weeks ago. Other people have mentioned the idea in passing. Any archivist here want to settle which one of us gets the prize? There was a certain amount of gratuitous sex first season, to the point where I coined the phrase "bimbo of the week" and other listmembers started making jokes about Dead Models In Lingerie (TM). Quite a few of the plots revolved around the murder of some glamour girl. There was also a plot with a leather-corsetted dominatrix, in the Canadian version of Cherry Blossoms the acupuncturist's rooms are back of a whorehouse, a police officer's wife gets involved with some kinky adulterous sex, etc. The first half dozen episodes or so were produced with some scenes being shot twice, with the actresses being barebreasted in one version, for the German market. However, Telemunchen got talked out of that pretty quickly. I have watched all of first season several times and I think the bimbo factor was reduced in the later episodes. This is a subjective impression. The very last broadcast episode of first season had what I consider the classic first season FK plot premise: someone is kidnapping and murdering models. However, the level of intelligence and sophistication with which this was handled redeemed it from being totally exploitative. Early on, Schanke is raving to Nick about one of the victims, who was a memorable centerfold; Nick never heard of her and Schanke's attitude is lightly satirized. When another model is kidnapped, at first she is helpless and frightened. Rather than simply be a passive rescue object, she gathers her wits and uses feminine wiles, ingenuity and surprise to escape. So Love You To Death turns out to have a credible feminist element (as well as terrific cinematography and music). I agree with all of Tami's comments on the strengths and weaknesses of season one vs. season two. There were some very hot moments between Nick and Janette, all done with suggestion and immense style, unlike the crass standing-up-in-the-park sex scene in season two. I can watch those clips over and over. It is a terrible shame that the difficulties of financing the show have kept interrupting the production process, because both season two and season three got much better in the later episodes, when the cast and writers had gotten used to working together (no doubt we will see a falling off in the last six eps, after the boom was lowered). If only some good angel had provided the wherewithal for these artists to get on with their jobs, they could have gone straight through for four seasons without major cast changes and produced a body of work for the ages. What we have left is very, very uneven. Deborah Bender DBendr@a....... The reason I ask is because about half the people have been getting my posted stories either without quotes or with weird symbols. I cut and paste from Word into AOL, but it's the same with Amipro. No way am I gonna write the whole story in AOL! So I'm wondering if ascii files can be sent... I've spent the past 2 hours experimenting and the results are the same -- no quotes! Argh! I actually taped NICK KNIGHT and kept it, the first time it was aired. Oh, no big deal? It was one of the very first shows I taped and kept. I watched it over and over, and wished they'd make a series about it. When they did, I was suspicious at first. Who was this Geraint Wyn Davies guy? Why was the coroner a woman? Schanke was very reassuring---it made me feel that I DID have the right show. But the scenes with Allyce "Hold Me" Hunter almost made me sorry it'd been picked up for CTAPT. And I kept praying they wouldn't make Nick and Nat more than friends, since they seemed so _normal_ just as compadres. I was sick of the MOONLIGHTING thing. And then they aired LAST ACT, and I became an addict. So, I was introduced to Lacroix via Nick's nightmarish flashbacks, and didn't stop whole-heartedly hating him until after BMV. I met our Janette in the first ep, and was later relieved she wasn't the cold ice-bitch they'd made her in the TV movie. Natalie had time to grow on me for a long time as Nick's friend... and then Denver CBS-TV stopped showing FK after 11 episodes. A nice friend got me copies of the rest of season 1, so I thought of Nat as Nick's friend for a -very- long time. Hard switch there, after OtL. Then I came in a couple eps into Season 2, not having been warned that it was starting again...and had to play catch up. Why wasn't Lacroix dead, damnit??? :) Where the heck did Stonetree go? I missed him. All of this may explain my Merc-ness. I've had such a sporadic viewing history, and the characters have changed so much from time to time, that I simply like all of them, root for them, and can't pick a side. Unless, of course, I've got a very good reason to.... :) Christina, Mercenary, O- FoFoD, Natpacker/Ravenette/Knightie/Perky vqrw76a@p....... /Vaquera sympathies... and a sneaking wish to have a long conversation with Uncle, should someone put him in a nice cage ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Mar 1996 20:34:14 -0900 From: Muldy Sculler <ffbmh@a.......> Subject: Re: Holiday Postcards (fwd) Oh please!
