Sorry to do this, but I cannot find the instructions on how to get added to the DEBSPLAY list to get information about the Shrewthering. Would some kind soul send me that info? Thanks - you guys are the greatest! ObFK Comment: I just saw the repeat of "Hearts of Darkness" (I missed the first minute including the "Let's get naked!" line) and it made me think about everyone's opinion of USA's effect on season 3. However, I just saw one of the first season's episodes, and noticed that the opening theme shows a (supposedly) naked woman (she's topless, and just as she turns to face the camera, Nick lifts his badge and blocks the view). Personally, I hate when they throw in stuff like that just to attract attention. It takes time away from the story and rarely every advances the plot. IMHO. This made me wonder: Was USA the first to try to throw a little flesh (ala Silk Stalkings) in the show, or did CBS try to spice up their "Crimetime After Primetime", too? Now, don't take this as a flame, but a lot of people seem to be putting the first season up on a pedestal. I'm trying to understand if it really deserves to be held in such higher regard than season three, or if people are idealizing it here (I've only seen one season one episode, and it is very good, but it doesn't blow season three out of the water like I expected after reading this list). Any comments? Stephania Nick&Nat-Packer, who is starting to wonder if the ObFK comment is going to get me into a LOT of trouble. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Mar 1996 20:35:35 +0000 From: Karen Tobin <ktobin@t.......> Subject: Re: Syndies for Eternal Champion ;) On 5 Mar 96 at 18:55, Tippi Blevins wrote: ..., but I need names of Syndies who > carry FK and, if possible, the names of the programming directors. However, as a member of the press who was at the Television Critics Tour when USA announced its participation, I know there was a concerted effort to get coverage.I was the only one jumping for joy. I subsequently had some conversations with the Columbia TriStar publicist and she said she was having a great deal of trouble getting the mainstream press interested in the show. We discussed some possible pitches -- including GWD's musical talent being pitched to the music trades. I tried to do something with my contacts at the Washington Post, but the show didn't air in the vicinity, so it was nixed. The difference (for me, anyway) has more to do with the quality of the story surrounding such scenes. The scene you mention about the "topless" girl in the credits is an excellent example of the difference. She was a stripper who was using her talents to "charm" men to get them to commit crimes so that she would get a vicarious thrill out of making them do them. Eventually she needed to experience more direct thrills by killing one guy. But her "sex" or "exposure" type scenes were to personally involve Nick in relating her with the type of seductress Janette was in helping to lead him to getting involved with LC (in the flashback, we see Janette seducing a mortal Nick). Therefore, it becomes a question of whether Nick will let himself be "seduced" by "evil" again. The story is presented in such a way that it seems that he *is* being taken in by the stripper's "wiles"--you wonder whether he's going to forget that he's a cop and she's a murder suspect. In the end of course he does his job and gets her confession on a "wire". But she doesn't apparently think she's going to like jail because she winds up throwing herself from a roof and finding the ultimate "thrill" in dying. Contrast this with Hearts of Darkness. While the "sex" in this I think is essential to the story of Ellen/Monica/Jaclyn, we as viewers can't get quite as emotionally involved with her story as it is so "separate" from any of the "main" characters. That doesn't mean it isn't an entertaining and thought-provoking story, but there *is* a certain amount of natural distance in not having a "personal crisis" link to a main character (like Nick). First season involved Nick in a direct way with many episode events. Plus I think some more important "issues" were discussed in the first season episodes. In the very early episodes, you weren't always so sure that Nick was going to stay or be a "good" guy, for instance (the episode with the stripper, Dance By the Light of the Moon, falls into this category). I *do* consider first season to be the best season (this doesn't mean I haven't enjoyed the subsequent seasons though). Of course, other people have different opinions, I suppose. :) But this is an interesting topic to bring up and I hope some other people will comment on it. --Sandra Gray, forever Knightie --tmp_harkins@d....... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Mar 1996 00:07:46 -0500 From: Lisa Wolters <MVRJasper@a.......> Subject: FK on SciFi only? Wail!!!!!!!! I've been playing catch-up with my digests....please say it ain't so that FK will air exclusively on the Sci Fi Channel! I can't get the Sci Fi Channel, and neither can most of the San Francisco Bay Area. As Fred says, this will just keep the show swept nicely under the rug, where USA wants it. It's obvious that all USA cares about is stripping the show to preserve its bottom line--not the fans, not anything else. I know TV's a business to these people, but I think it's time we taught them the meaning of the words "the customer is always right." >:-) Sigh... I'll sharpen my honey-dripping pen again... To All Canadians: I am intending to write a "Forever Knight"/"Nightbreed" crossover, and I need some geographical help. Supposedly, the cemetery of Midian (home of the Nightbreed) is near a town called Dwyer. Near the town of Dwyer is another town, Shere Neck. Do either of these towns exist? If so, how far are they from Toronto? I apologize for the waste of bandwidth, and herewith return you to your normal list madness. As you haven't seen the full first season, I don't think it's possible for you to make any kind of true assessment as to why we hold it in such high regard, anymore than anyone just seeing one episode of the 3rd season say like "Hearts of Darkness" should think the entire 3rd season is lousy. Actually, it is a matter of taste and what you believe the characters of FK should be. We (for the most part) fell in love with the decidedly different themes, story lines and the angst-ridden vampire trying to find salvation. The relationship between Nick & Nat as it was in the first season, and Nick & Schanke is sorely missed. You don't mention what episode from the first season you saw, they weren't all stellar any more than all the third season were lousy so it would definitely depend on which one you saw so, it's kind of hard to totally discuss it without knowing. I came in during second season, and I still think that was the best. There've been some interesting debates about how the different seasons have affected different fans, especially as we've seen such significant changes in characters & themes from one to the next. In particular, I like the theory (whose theory? Susan's, maybe?) that the fan's perception of the show (and often choice/s of affiliation/s) are significantly influenced by the season they saw first. I know that for me, my vision of FK = second season FK, and if I had to be stranded on the proverbial desert island w/only one season's worth of tapes, that's the one I'd pick. Except for the drummers. I do like the bit with the drummers. -- KEEP THE FAITH! -- Jamie M.R. <immajer@p.......> SFK WebGoddess -- Asst.
